Picnic Sports We had a terrific time last Friday at Kallista Primary s annual Picnic Sports where the children enjoyed a round robin of games and challenges on the oval! It was really lovely to see so many parents and grandparents, too. Thanks for your help at the different activities, and for coming along to picnic and enjoy watching the kids have fun! Mrs Morris as always did a great job of organising this marvellous event for uswe really appreciate it! Thanks also to our Year 5 and 6 students for helping set -up, and for being enthusiastic helpers and really good role models to the younger students. I loved the teamwork! So many children smiling and encouraging each other, and lots of laughing - particularly at the flying rubber chooks on the parachute! All round a really great day! Yarralin We are happy to announce that we have not only reconnected with our friends at the Northern Territory school Yarralin through letter writing, but we now have the opportunity to take nine Year 5/6 students, to visit Yarralin from Wednesday 27th July to Sunday 7th August If you are interested in your child coming to Yarralin, you will need to attend our information evening on Thursday 10th March at 5.30pm.

The first day will be held on Wednesday 9 March, 2016 at Olinda Primary School and will include school captains and Year 6 house captains from seven schools in the Dandenong Ranges area. The day will be facilitated by the highly experienced and inspirational trainer and consultant Kate Wilde, from The Workshop. This program will provide an excellent educational experience where our Year Six student leaders learn what it means to be a caring, confident leader and a good citizen. Students will be accompanied by Anne Vear and will present their learning at a later date in the year at a parent evening. An important aspect of the program is the peer educator approach, where fourteen Year 9 and 10 students from Monbulk Secondary College, Sherbrooke Community School, and Upwey High School, will also attend the day and with Kate, will mentor and coach our Dandenong Ranges primary student leaders. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Year Six leaders to meet with other student leaders from both primary and secondary settings, to develop their leadership skills and their neighbourhood links. They will also develop an action research project together back at school under the guidance of Anne. The focus of the project will be citizenship and creating a stronger sense of student agency in our school. I can t wait to see what they will come up with, and how they are going to impact on the culture of our school in a positive way! 3 Please cross outside our school at the school crossing! It is essential that the children learn to use the crossing every time they cross the road. Please respect the crossing and teach your children, by example, to use it. Safety first! Ranges Interschool Dance Contest 2016 We are so excited to have been offered to join the Ranges Interschool Dance Contest! The dance competition will involve Year 5 and 6 students from the Dandenong Ranges schools, and requires the students to choreograph and perform a dance either solo, in a duo, team or troupe! I had at least 16 boys and girls who took forms home yesterday and I can t wait to see these dances develop and then watch them perform at Monbulk Secondary College, on Friday 20 May! Don t forget to get your entry forms to me by Tuesday 15th March, kids!

4 Nuts and Peanuts at Kallista Primary School Around 1 in 20 children in Australia have a food allergy. Peanuts and tree nuts are two of the most common allergies in children. What are tree nuts? The term tree nuts is commonly used to mean nuts other than peanut and includes - cashew, walnut, almond, pecan, pistachio, brazil nut, hazelnut, macadamia and pine nut. Allergies can be life threatening - this is known as anaphylaxis. Young children are not yet able to manage their allergy risk independently First Aid and Anaphylaxis training is critical, however, the best way to keep kids with allergies safe is prevention. Children with allergies need to learn to manage their allergy and avoid known allergens, such as nuts. Families and the school are working together to educate children with allergies so they can keep themselves safe, but remember that for young kids, this is a learning process. Young children Do not have a concept of what life threatening really means Do not have the cognitive ability to consider risk and foresee consequences Are unable to read and interpret ingredient labels and warnings May be very tempted by delicious cakes, biscuits or chocolates that their friends might have The Royal Children s Hospital guidelines do NOT recommend a school wide Nut Ban because it is impossible to enforce and has been shown to lead to a false sense of security and reduced vigilance around the potential presence of nuts. In the Junior Learning Centre, there are a number of children with peanut and tree nut allergies who are still learning how to keep themselves safe, and do not yet have the ability to independently manage their risk of anaphylaxis. While KPS does not have a school wide nut ban, we request that you do not send peanuts or nuts in your child s lunch, if their class is in the Junior Learning Centre. A student in 3/4S has anaphylaxis to peanuts. Please be mindful of your children's lunches and try to make it peanut free if possible. Thank you for your support. Warm Regards Christine

5 SCHOOL COUNCIL Kallista Primary School Council would like to congratulate and welcome, Richard Hecker and Trevor Ploeg as new members of school council. They join re-elected members Ian Bland, Karen Koolstra, Craig Tennant, Helen Whitelaw, Sonja Winkler and Kirsten Belloni and ongoing members Emma Miller, Simone Patterson, Rebecca Bos, Shelly Walker and Christine Finighan. We also thank our exiting members Julie Porter and Kate Hannan for all their contributions throughout the year. It is always great to have some new faces on council and we are looking forward to a busy and exciting new school council year!

6 Here s something special What do you think of this new version of the National Anthem? It has been written by Judy Durham and Deborah Cheetham : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gzrvnrplzg New lyrics to an old tune Australians let us stand as one, upon this sacred land. A new day dawns, we re moving on to trust and understand. Combine our ancient history and cultures everywhere, To bond together for all time, advance Australia fair. With joyful hearts then let us sing, advance Australia fair.... Australians let us all be one, with peace and harmony. Our precious water, soil and sun, grant life for you and me. Our land abounds in nature s gifts to love, respect and share, And honouring the Dreaming, advance Australia fair. With joyful hearts then let us sing, advance Australia fair.... Australians let us strive as one, to work with willing hands. Our Southern Cross will guide us on, as friends with other lands. While we embrace tomorrow s world with courage, truth and care, And all our actions prove the words, advance Australia fair, With joyful hearts then let us sing, advance Australia fair.... And when this special land of ours is in our children s care, From shore to shore forever more, advance Australia fair. With joyful hearts then let us sing, advance.. Australia.. fair.

8 DEVELOPING PARENTING PARTNERSHIPS IN THE EARLY YEARS OF SCHOOL Essential for those wishing to help with reading at school Invaluable for those wishing to help their child at home DO YOU KNOW HOW AND WHEN YOUR CHILD LEARNS BEST? THERE ARE SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN, INCREASE THEIR CONFIDENCE AND MAKE SURE THEY GET THE MOST OUT OF THEIR TIME AT SCHOOL Kallista has a long and successful history of dedicated parents nurturing their children s learning both at home and in the classroom. We are pleased to be able to offer training and education in the area of literacy to all parents interested in understanding more about how their children s learning develops and how the school and home can best work together to support their education. The three session course will explore ways that you can help your child acquire literacy skills in the areas of Oral literacy, Reading and Writing as well as investigate How Children Learn. All participants will receive a certificate at the end of the course which is recognized throughout Victoria. Numbers in each course are limited to allow maximum discussion and tailoring of the course to meet individual needs of parents. It is essential that those parents wishing to hear reading in classrooms attend the Reading session. Afternoon sessions (2-3.30p.m.) Wed 9 th March ( Reading) Wed 16 th March (Writing) Evening Session (7-8.30p.m.) Wed 2 nd March Oral Language (this is a repeat of the session offered last year during prep orientation) Tues 8 th March Tues 15 th March It is preferable that participants choose either the morning or evening course so that the groups can get to know one another but there can be some flexibility if necessary. 9 PICNIC SPORTS What a beautiful day for our Picnic Sports on Friday. The oval looked wonderful with all the bright and exciting activities that Joel our organiser had set up for us. Thankyou to all those parents who helped out on the day. We couldn t have done it without you and your enthusiasm was much appreciated. Sometimes I think the parent helpers have just as much fun as the kids. The activities the children experience are designed to engage them in physical challenges, a positive social experience, success and enjoyment. It s a sports event that invites children to experience a variety of fun activities that encourage skill development, problem solving, fitness, perseverance and co-operation using normal and modified equipment. What a fantastic job our Grade 5 s did with their Prep Buddies making sure that they were all happy and confident. It s good to see all senior students take on leadership roles early in the year and getting to know the younger and new students. No wonder the groups had so much fun with such keen and enthusiastic leaders. Thankyou to Nicky Tipping once again for her photos that show Kallista kids having a great time lots of smiles going on. A photo gallery will soon be on the Sports Noticeboard so check out your children in action. Hilary Morris Physical Education
