2 Message from the President Greetings from your AFDA President! September already! It s been said that time flies when you are having fun! But time flies when you are busy as well!! In July, your executive Board traveled to beautiful Napa Valley, California for the NFDA Leadership Conference. During one session of this conference, legal counsel for NFDA, Scott Gilligan addressed each individual state and their laws concerning pre-need, cremation and burial and we found out that Alabama gets good scores on our report card. It seems that our efforts in the recent legislation really paid off and put Alabama where we need to be. NFDA is also actively engaged in keeping us up to date with social media and technology in funeral service. It was and always is a very informative Conference. My thanks to Past-President and NFDA Policy Board member Mr. Randy Anderson and Radney Funeral Home in Alexander City for hosting a NFDA Certified Crematory Operators course on August 8 th. This event was well attended and very informative. Busy, busy, busy as usual concerning ongoing issues within AFDA, the Funeral Trust of Alabama is doing very well and Paul Von Schoeler is working hard to get us ready for January 1, 2015 changes. Graham Champion and I are working with the folks at the Department of Insurance to try to come up with some way to help you and your families with the Mutual Savings claim situation. Hopefully Graham will be able to touch the right person in Montgomery and we can get this situation made easy, again! Speaking of Depart of Insurance, Mr. Mac Stagner, who has headed up the pre-need department for DOI, will be retiring in October. Mac has been a friend to funeral service and has been great to work with AFDA in understanding and enforcing the law! Congratulations Mac!! Enjoy your retirement!! Continuing Education is here and AFDA wants to help you and your employees meet the requirement of the law! This is not a difficult thing and is a very reasonable and easily achievable law. Your leadership at AFDA is committed to making every effort for you to get your CEU s through Association meetings. The District meetings coming up in November will get you 2 CEU s just to attend. With the help of Dr. Counce, we are putting together programs for our Mid-Winter meeting in Birmingham that will be very informative and will provide CEU s. We plan to offer but you need to plan to attend. Your attendance makes these efforts worthwhile!! The NFDA International Convention is in Nashville, Tennessee, October 12 th thru the 15 th. Please make your plans to join us there! If you have never attended the NFDA International Convention, this one is in our backyard and I promise it will be an event you simply want regret! Vendors from all over the world will share their goods and displays and of course, plan to attend Alabama night on Monday. I hope to see you in Nashville!! Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to serve you through AFDA!! God Bless!! Philippians 4:13 Geoff Halbrooks Page 2 THE U NDE RT AK IN GS

13 USPS Updates Policy on International Shipping of Cremated Remains The United States Postal Service has made a change regarding international shipments of cremated remains. Effective July, 2014, funeral directors must now send all cremated remains via Priority Mail Express International service and no longer have the option to send cremated remains via International Registered Mail service. Earlier this year, the USPS changed the policy of domestic shipment of cremated remains to this similar policy, and it is now universal whether sending cremated remains domestically or internationally. The specific policy from the USPS is listed below: 139.Cremated Remains, Eligibility Cremated remains (human and animal ashes) are permitted to be mailed internationally under the following conditions: A. The cremated remains are not otherwise prohibited by the destination country (see the Individual Country Listings). B. The package is sent only by Priority Mail Express International service (see the Individual Country Listings for availability).\ Packaging The mailed must package cremated remains (human or animal ashes) in a sealed and siftproff funeral urn. The mailer must place the urn in a strong and durable outer container and must pack the outer container with sufficient cushioning material to prevent shifting during transit. The outer container must be sift-proof to prevent powders from escaping and thereby soiling, damaging or destroying another mail piece or any postal equipment or from causing discomfort to a person Markings The mailer must indicate the identity of the contents on the required applicable customer declaration form.
