Esther Attean works for the Muskie School of Public Service and is a co-director for the work of Maine-Wabanaki REACH, a cross cultural collaborative that established and convened the truth commission. Esther is Passamaquoddy from Sipayik, holds an M.S.W. from the University of Maine. She came to the Muskie School in 2003 to work with young people in their transition out of foster care. Muskie School of Public Service University of Southern Maine eattean@usm.maine.edu CHARLOTTE BACON Charlotte Bacon is the executive director of the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), but first joined the TRC as a statement gatherer in November She coordinates events and manages the TRC s daily activities. charlotte@mainewabanakitrc.org CLINT BOOTHBY, ESQ. Clint Boothby is a partner at Boothby Perry, LLC with offices in Turner and Norway. He is a 1980 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono and a 1999 graduate of the University of Maine School of Law. He was a shareholder at Hanley & Associates, P.A. in South Paris until he opened Boothby Law in In 2012 he and Alan J. Perry, Esq. merged their practices. The firm now consists of Clint, Alan, Taylor Kilgore, Esq., Victoria Silver, Esq., and Kendall Ricker, Esq.. Clint practices in the areas of family law including child protective matters; small business and corporate law; real estate, both transactional and litigation; and elder law. He is a member of Androscoggin, Oxford and Maine Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Oxford County Trial Lawyers Association. He is the Vice Chair of the Franklin County Health Network. He is an occasional guest speaker at the law school. He served as facilitator for the RSU #73 regional planning committee, Chair of the MSAD #36 Board of Directors, Chair of the Livermore Board of Appeals and as a member of the Board of Directors of Farm Family Insurance Company. PENTHEA BURNS Penthea Burns works for the Muskie School of Public Service and co-directs the work of Maine-Wabanaki REACH, a cross cultural collaborative that established and convened the

Penthea is a lifelong Mainer and has worked for the Muskie School since She is also the Director of the Maine Youth Leadership Advisory Team (youth leaders in foster care) and is co-founder of Camp to Belong Maine, which reunites siblings who have been separated by foster care and adoption. After graduating from the University of Colorado Law School in 1980, Pat Furman spent nearly seven years in the Office of the Public Defender, representing indigent defendants in every type of criminal case in various jurisdictions in Colorado. After a year in private practice, that included a short stint filling in as a District Court Magistrate, he joined the clinical faculty in In 1994, Professor Furman became the Director of Clinical Programs. His main teaching load was in the Criminal Defense Clinic, teaching Criminal Practice and Evidence Presentation, and supervising the students as they handled misdemeanor and traffic cases in Boulder courts. In 2002, he introduced a new clinical course, Wrongful Convictions, an offspring of the Colorado Innocence Project, to give wrongfully convicted people a chance at freedom through pro bono legal assistance from students working with leading practitioners and was instrumental in basing the Colorado Innocence Project at Colorado Law. Professor Furman took Emeritus status in 2008, but has continued to teach at the law school, focusing on Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Trial Advocacy, and a new course in Post-Conviction Criminal Procedure. His research and writing focus on criminal law and procedure, trial advocacy, and ethics for criminal lawyers. Professor Furman co-wrote Colorado Evidentiary Foundations, a practice-oriented book that addresses evidence issues that arise in both State and Federal Court in Colorado, and updates that work frequently, with the most recent revision occurring in He is the Managing Editor and principal author of Colorado DUI Benchbook, a book addressing the substantive, procedural, and evidentiary issues raised in the adjudication of alcohol related traffic offenses. His articles have appeared frequently in The Colorado Lawyer (the professional journal of the Colorado Bar Association), he regularly teaches CLE programs on these and other topics, and he is also a frequent lecturer on the criminal justice system to a variety of legal, civic, and educational groups. furman@colorado.edu NANCY HATHAWAY, ESQ. Nancy Hathaway is a supervising attorney in the Children and Family Law Division of the Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS). She represents indigent parents and children in 2

3 care and protection and termination of parental rights proceedings in the Boston and Cambridge Juvenile Courts. She also advocates for teenagers who are the subject of Child Requiring Assistance petitions. Before joining CPCS in 2006, Ms. Hathaway was an Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney s Office. She prosecuted criminal cases in the Supreme Judicial Court, Appeals Court, Superior Court, Juvenile Court, and District Courts. For much of her time in the District Attorney s Office, Ms. Hathaway specialized in cases of child abuse and exploitation. Ms. Hathaway is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law ( 94) and Mount Holyoke College ( 90). She has served on the faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy since 2011 and has trained trial lawyers in Colorado, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Utah, and Arkansas. nhathaway@publiccounsel.net THE HONORABLE CHARLES LAVERDIERE Chief Judge LaVerdiere earned a Bachelor s Degree from the University of Maine in 1974, a Masters Degree from the University of Maine in 1976, and a J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law in Chief Judge LaVerdiere practiced law in Wilton, Maine for almost 20 years before being appointed to the Maine District Court in In 2007, he was appointed as Deputy Chief Judge, and in 2010 was appointed as Chief Judge of the District Courts. Chief Judge LaVerdiere served 3 terms in the Maine House of Representatives and was House Chair of the Judiciary Committee. He is an avid pilot and a Registered Maine Guide. JOHN MARTIN, ESQ. After graduating from the University of Maine in Orono, John attended the University of Maine School of Law, where he received a J.D. in John gained a wealth of experience while clerking for Wright & Mills, P.A., of Skowhegan, during his summers in law school. He then worked for Senator S. Peter Mills in his bid for Governor in John went on to work at the Law Offices of Michael A. Wiers in Hartland and Newport, Maine, where he focused on criminal, family and child protective law. John later established his own practice after becoming a part of the Somerset County Private Defender s Project, which focuses primarily on the representation of indigent defendants facing criminal charges. Although the focus of his practice is criminal law, John continues to practice in the areas of family law and child protective law as a parents attorney. John is a member of the Maine Bar Association and past President of the Somerset County Bar Association. He lives in Skowhegan, Maine, with his wife, Kimm, and their twin boys. jwmartinlaw@msn.com 3

4 THE HONORABLE JEFFREY MOSKOWITZ Deputy Chief Judge Moskowitz earned a Bachelor s Degree from St. Lawrence University in 1980 and a J.D. from the Syracuse University College of Law in Deputy Chief Judge Moskowitz worked as a prosecutor in the York County District Attorney s office before being appointed to the Maine District Court in He has served as the Deputy Chief of the Maine District Court since NORA SOSNOFF, A.A.G. Nora Sosnoff is an Assistant Attorney General who serves as the Chief of the Child Protection Division and Legal Ethics Officer in Maine s Office of the Attorney General. She is a member of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court s Advisory Committee on Professional Responsibility and the State s Multi-Disciplinary Task Force on Justice under the Children s Justice Act. She has served as Deputy Bar Counsel to the Board of Overseers of the Bar and was a member of the Court s Task Force that drafted the Maine Rules of Professional Conduct. Nora chairs the Maine Bar Association s Continuing Legal Education Committee. She is actively involved in mentoring student attorneys through internship and externship programs at the Office of the Attorney General. She worked as an assistant in a venture capital firm before attending law school at the University of Maine School of Law. She received her Juris Doctor from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. in After graduating from law school, Loralie worked in private practice representing clients in civil and criminal defense matters. In 2004, she returned to Maine to join the York County District Attorney s Office where she prosecuted juvenile and domestic violence cases before joining the Office of Attorney General in Since that time, Loralie has been representing DHHS, Division of Child Support Enforcement and Recovery (DSER). loralie.spooner@maine.gov MARVIN VENTRELL, ESQ. Marvin Ventrell founded the Juvenile Law Society in 2009 following 15 years as the chief executive officer of the National Association of Counsel for Children. In his 29-year legal career, Mr. Ventrell has been a litigation firm associate and partner, a public defender, an association director, a policy advocate, a teacher, and a trial skills instructor. He is a recipient of the ABA Child Advocacy Award and the Kempe Award, and is a Fellow of the Colorado Bar Foundation. Mr. Ventrell co-directed the national program sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of HHS Children s Bureau that established Child Welfare Law as a formal legal specialty and created the Child Welfare Attorney Certification Program. He Co-edited the national treatise, 4

5 Child Welfare Law and Practice, and compiled the national examination for child welfare law proficiency. He is also the author of numerous articles and book chapters including, The Evolution of the Dependency Component of the Juvenile Court. Mr. Ventrell is responsible for the creation of the National Children s Law Office Project that supports the creation and maintenance of model children s law offices through the project publication, Children s Law Office Guidebook. Together with the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA), Mr. Ventrell established the annual NITA Rocky Mountain Child Advocacy Training Institute, now in its 18 th year.
