There is an option, however, to fast track the course and complete it in two trimesters (8 months). Instruction for all units is classroom based. Generally, four hours of class contact per week are allocated to each unit. Assessment for all units is ongoing and continuous consisting of tests, assignments and case study analysis. Most units have a final two-hour. Eight units must be completed and passed to be awarded the Diploma. 2 Transfer to Deakin University The following transfer criteria apply: You must complete and pass eight Deakin College Diploma of Commerce units*. You must achieve the required Weighted Average Mark (WAM) for your Deakin College diploma taking into account all units attempted at Deakin College (required WAMs are included under the Deakin University degrees below). * Transfer to some degrees requires specific Deakin College units to be completed in order to receive the appropriate credits (see Deakin University degrees below). MAA103 Accounting for Decision Making This unit takes a user perspective rather than the more traditional preparer focus on some first units in accounting. This unit covers the following topics: the accounting environment; business planning and cost concepts for management decisions; Accounting for short-term management planning; Classification and analysis of business transactions; Accounting reports: their nature and uses; Decision making by external users of financial statements and business sustainability. Assessment: 30% assignment, 10% class presentation, 60% final MAE101 Economic Principles This unit addresses the theory of price, the role of price, how different markets set their prices and how and why governments change prices. Assessment: 20% test, 20% assignment, 60% final MAE102 The Global Economy The Global Economy is concerned with the way in which the whole economy and/or large sectors of it work. The major sectors analysed are the household, government, business and international. Issues such as economic growth, unemployment, inflation, balance of payments, exchange rate and fiscal and monetary policies are also addressed. Assessment: 20% assignments, 20% test, 60% final MAF101 Fundamentals of Finance This unit aims to introduce you to finance and provide you with an introductory knowledge of institutions, markets and instruments. The unit will discuss some of the fundamental financial concepts such as the time value of money and the concepts of risk and return. You will learn to apply these fundamental concepts in the areas of investments in equity and debt. These issues will be discussed in the local and international context. Assessment: 20% trimester test, 20% assignment, 60% final MIS101 Business Information Systems This unit introduces students to a variety of Information System concepts and applications that allow businesses to achieve a competitive advantage, to manage information assets and to automate business processes. Also examined are the associated interactions between businesses, technology, people and the environment. This unit lays the foundation for using Information Systems for specific business purposes, the fundamentals of Digital Literacy and will introduce students to a Critical Thinking approach to improve their ability to reason, interpret and reflect. Overall, while the unit is not technical in nature, it does examine how Information Systems support the many interactive functions of businesses, individuals and groups and how the internal functions and Information Systems within an organisation provide support from an operations-level, through to a strategic decision-making level. 7 MIS171 Business Analytics This unit provides the basic descriptive and inferential statistical techniques required by business graduates. Widespread use will be made of computer packages to cover topics such as probability, probability distribution, sampling theory, estimation, hypothesis testing and regression analysis. Assessment: 40% trimester assignments, 60% final MLC101 Business Law The unit provides the underlying concepts and purpose of commercial law. It covers the Australian legal system and the law relating to contract, agency and negligence. Assessment: 20% progressive assessments including class tests, 5% MCQ test, 15% short essay, 60% final MME101 Business Academic Skills This unit aims to strengthen student s language and research skills and to equip them with an understanding of the foundation concepts that underlie the undergraduate degree programs. Students will be trained in the language and communication skills needed for library research, academic reading, academic writing and note taking. MMK277 Marketing Management This unit examines the nature of marketing management from a marketing planning perspective. The focus of discussion is the coordinated activities of the network of producers of goods, services and experiences which seek to satisfy their customers. Emphasis is placed on marketing strategy formulation and the use of strategic marketing mix elements in developing and maintaining a market orientation and assessing organizational performance. Aspects of marketing such as marketing research, customer behavior, product innovation and marketing communication are also examined. Assessment: 60% assessment; 40% final MMM132 Management This unit aims to provide students with a solid understanding of the intellectual foundations of the study of management. The unit also explores the impact of the external environment on management practices, with particular consideration given to globalisation, ethics, social responsibility, and the social and cultural context of management.
