Troubleshooting / FAQ Routers / Firewalls I can't connect to my server from outside of my internal network. The server's IP is , but I can't use that IP from a friend's computer. How do I get to the server? First, make sure to map the FTP server's port through to the local machine. Most routers can do port mapping, so see your instructions for the router on how to do that. The default port is 21 for FTP. Then make sure to map a range of ports through for PASV transfers. I generally recommend ports Next, make sure to let CrushFTP know what ports you have mapped through for PASV transfers. You can set this in CrushFTP's advanced preferences. Set the PASV range to be "2000,2010". Also make sure the IP that CrushFTP is reporting for the server is your real Internet IP and not the internal network's IP. By default, CrushFTP looks up its real Internet IP. The last thing to check is whether your friend's computer is behind a router/firewall as well. If it is, they need to use PASV type transfers. Usually you can find this setting in the FTP client's preferences. Some FTP clients use a global setting from the OS. In MacOS 8/9, its in the Internet control panel under the advanced tab. What is the DMZ setting in my router for? Can I use this instead? The DMZ setting will essentially map all ports through to a machine. If you use this setting, you don't need to worry about any port mapping. You only need to make sure CrushFTP is reporting its real Internet IP. My network doesn't allow a server to be run on port 21, can I change the port in CrushFTP? Yes. Under the "Prefs" tab, change the port number and press apply. Keep in mind running the server on another port other than port 21 may cause issues with some router's and firewalls and connections will just fail. What's the deal with PASV mode? Why doesn't it just "work" automatically? First, a little background about how FTP does transfers. The port 21 is used only for commands, and command responses. No data is sent across this port. When a file listing, file download, or file upload is needed, a new data channel is opened and the data is transferred along this channel. The controlling command channel is used to abort a transfer and such. The data channel is described in the PORT command. It tells the server the client's IP, and port that it is listening on for the FTP server to connect to so data can be sent either way. If the client is behind a firewall, or router, then this generally won't work. That's where PASV comes in. PASV tells the server to open up another port and tells the client the IP and port its listening on. There is also the FTP aware router/firewall option in CrushFTP. This should work automatically with most routers and its enabled by default. If this fails to work, then you need to map ports. PASV also by default picks a port above 1025 and gives that back along with the IP. If the server is behind a router, you'll need to specify the range of ports the server can pick from. I usually suggest mapping ports through to the server and setting CrushFTP's PASV ports to "2000,2010". If your router can do more ports than 10, and allows for true mapping of ranges (most Linksys routers do), then do Maintenance How do I upgrade my copy of CrushFTP to the latest version? How do I upgrade my copy of CrushFTP to the latest version? All the code that CrushFTP uses to run is contained in the one single file "CrushFTP.jar". When upgrading, make a backup of your entire CrushFTP folder. Then copy in the CrushFTP.jar file from the new version to replace the old one. Then you can run CrushFTP again. (If you have CrushFTP installed as a service, you will need to reboot at this point to restart the service.) What are all the files and folders in the CrushFTP folder? -The "CrushFTP.jar" file is the main file that contains all the code for CrushFTP. This is what actually runs and is the server. Some operating systems like MacOS 9 have helper application file to launch the "CrushFTP.jar" file. Most operating systems can open it directly. -The "paths.txt" file indicates to CrushFTP where it all the below files are at. It defaults to "./". -CrushFTP stores all its server preferences in the "prefs.xml" file. This is the file that is not saved until you register your copy of CrushFTP. This effects the "Prefs" tab of CrushFTP along with all settings in the "Advanced Preferences". You can make changes

when the server is running, they just won't be remembered the next time you run CrushFTP. -The "stats" folder contains statistics and reporting information of what your server is doing. -The "mirrors" folder contains the preferences for all mirror items you have created. This is done via the "Mirror Setup" tab. -The "Icon.icns" is used to display an icon in the dock on MacOS X. -The "Search.jar" and "UserManager.jar" files are optional files that are used for some web administration if you use web administration. -All folders that start with "users_..." contain all your users and groups for the server. If you have the server listening on multiple IP addresses or ports, there will be a separate folder for each of these. -The "crush_ftp.log" file is the log of activity from the CrushFTP server. -The "libmacosxforkerio.jnilib" file is used to implement the MacBinary functions of the CrushFTP server. If it is not present, those abilities will not work. -Windows users have a file called "CrushFTP.exe". This file does two things. If run, it issues "java -jar CrushFTP.jar" to run CrushFTP. If you minimize CrushFTP to your "systray" then this file is run with parameters to put the icon in the "systray". If you double click the icon in the "systray" this file deletes the file "CrushFTP.hide" and then removes the icon from the "systray". It does not represent the codebase for CrushFTP. That is the "CrushFTP.jar" file. -If a "CrushFTP.hide" file exists, CrushFTP will run without a window being visible. If you delete this file, the GUI will display itself. It won't jump to being the front application, so keep that in mind if you might have other program windows covering it in the background. I run a server at work on my laptop. It seems ok, but when I get home I can never access it. All the ports are setup right. What's happening? Make sure power saving settings are turned off on the laptop. Otherwise it will probably go to sleep and you won't be able to connect. Regardless, if your running a server on a laptop, plug it in. The default setting for a plugged in machine is not to sleep anyway. I create a lot of temporary account. After a while they add up and I have to go through and clean them out. Is there an easier way? Yes, CrushFTP can handle temporary accounts. When you setup the account, you can set how long the account is good for in days and hours. You can even set it to be deleted after that time. If the user of that account tries to login after the account is expired, the account is automatically deleted. Or if you click on it in the user manager, it will ask you if its OK to delete it now since its expired. Can I set up accounts that will automatically expire if the user becomes inactive? Yes, just turn on the rolling activity checkbox next to the expire account info. If you set it to expire in 10 days, and rolling activity, then the account will stay active as long as the user logs in once every 10 days. If they wait 11 days, their account will be closed. I get a lot of uploads, and the directory starts getting to big after a while. I don't really care about them too much, I usually grab out the impors right away. Can I have the others deleted after a while? Sure can. When setting up the account that is doing the uploads, or any of your accounts, set the flag on the directory in the users virtual file system called "Purge All". Then under the "More Settings" tab, set how long till all uploads get purged. CrushFTP is already keeping a history of uploads that's what the reports are for. It has extra data stored it doesn't display in the reports window however. Anyway, it scans the upload history for files that are marked to be removed after a certain time, and either moves them, or deletes them. Downloads When people download from me they get slooooow speeds! Why? I have cable 3MBit from my ISP! Unless your paying for a professional level of bandwidth from an ISP, uploads and downloads go at two different speeds. Data that is coming from the Internet to you can go up to 3Mbit /sec. That's about 330k/sec. However, your upload is usually around say 256KBits. That means people can download from you at roughly 28k/sec. That bandwidth is shared between all connected users on your server. This also applies to people uploading to you. If they are using a Cable / DSL ISP, then their maximum outgoing speed will probably be about 28k/sec as well. Uploads I run a Mac server and I want the files uploaded to look like they did on the client's Mac. I mean I want the icon and file type/creator set once its uploaded. How do I get that to work?

CrushFTP can do MacBinary downloads, and uploads. If a client is using the right client, uploads will be done in MacBinary mode. Clih as Fetch, and Interarchy will encode the file as its being sent. CrushFTP will then decode the file after the upload is complete if the "Always Decode" checkbox for the user is on, or they turned on MacBinary mode with the MACB command. (Fetch and Interarchy both turn it on when they connect to a server.) So by using the right client, this will happen automatically. If the client is uploading a file from a PC such as a word document, then it won't have a type/creator specified. You can however setup a "file verifier" in the advanced settings to set its type and creator to that of a Mac word document. Just leave the "Starts with:" fields blank. I can upload small files around a megabyte, but not anything bigger. What might be causing this? It just seems to freeze during the upload and I eventually cancel it. One likely cause is a bandwidth restriction. If you have a fast network, and you set a small bandwidth limit, here is what happens. The client starts sending a whole bunch of data really fast to the server. The server's OS buffers as much as it can while its transferring it to CrushFTP. CrushFTP starts receiving and says whoa! It then starts pausing until the average speed slows down to the bandwidth limit. It then lets a little more in, and pauses if the speed is to fast. If the initial burst was way higher than the cap it may have to pause for a long time. This same problem doesn't usually happen with downloads and bandwidth limiters, but it can. If it does, it has to do with how fast it was able to send the data before it could make a calculation. So there is 1 second of unrestricted speed, and the same results as with uploads. Remote Administration How can I remotely control and setup my server? CrushFTP has built in remote administration. You have two options on how to do it. The first is to use another copy of CrushFTP to connect and control. The second is to use Internet Explorer and connect and control. Before you do either of those, you need to give the appropriate access to your account. In the user, click on the "Admin Settings" tab. Then give the user the appropriate admin settings you want them to have. The "Remote Dependant User Admin" is only for strictly user admining, not for server admining. Now your ready to connect with that user. If you're using the web admin, use a URL like: Keep in mind its over a megabyte to download the.jar, so be patient if your on a slow connection. Once it's done, login with the username and password info in the popup window that comes up. See the docs on remote administration for more info. If you're using another copy of CrushFTP, launch it, click on the "Remote Admin" tab, and enter the server info there. Then press the "Connect and Control" button. You'll get the remote server window up. Be patient as it receives all the settings. See the docs on remote administration for more information. What is the "Remote Dependant User Admin" option in the user admin area? This is a remote admin setting that will allow the user to connect and create/modify accounts that they control. Accounts they control are defined by whatever users are under them as in a group. To add a user to another person, drag the user in the user manager, and drop them on another user. They will then be added to that user. When the controlling user does the remote administration with the "Manage Users" button, or uses the web URL: they will get to see only the users that they control. Furthermore, they can only make changes that don't violate security concerns. Like they can't add any directories they want to, to a user. They can only add directories from their own directory system. So you'll want to make sure you only give them access to directories you want them to have access to. Be careful! Any directories that the user has access to, no matter what their privileges are set to, is like have full access to those directories. This is because if they are allowed to create another user, they can create that user and give them full access to any of the directories you gave them access to. IRC How do I setup the IRC Bot to list off stuff my server is doing? Open the advanced preferences, and click on the "IRC" tab. Setup the IRC server, and port. Also make sure to include a "User", "Nickname", and "Real Name". They are all required fields before the Bot can login to most IRC servers. Next setup a channel for the bot to join so it can list of statistics. Then setup the Bot's command list, and your done. Start the IRC bot from under the "Server" menu. Note that the Bot's settings are not all live. Command changes are live, but the channels the Bot is connected to is not. You will need to stop, and start the bot for channel changes and additions to take effect. How do I setup the IRC Bot to listen to user commands?

Open the advanced preferences, and click on the "IRC" tab. Then click on the "Commands" tab. Click the "add" button and type in the command the bot should be watching for. The bot is searching for any line that starts with a command in the list. It responds to both public channel messages, and private messages. The %auth% variable can be put in a command to cause authentication for a user. It will look for a username, followed by a space, then a password, followed by a space, and finally the IP of the server if there happens to be more than one server (multi-homed machines). The %search% variable can be used to cause a search with the supplied filename. Searches can only be done after a user has authenticated themselves. How do I setup what channel I want the bot on? Open the advanced preferences, and click on the "IRC" tab. Then click on the "Channels" tab. Click the add button and add in a channel name. Be sure to include the # sign. Then click on that channel in the list, and setup the settings on the right. They are explained in the server setup section. Note that you can have duplicate entries for channel names in the list. You could have ten channels listed all with the same name, but different timers for different statistics of when they get posted, or all with different usernames that they are watching. Server Setup Its telling me I need to enable port 21 access! What do I do? Just like when you install any other software on OS X, you are prompted for your admin password. The terminal window is asking for your admin password so that the server can run on port 21. When typing your password don't be alarmed that you don't see anything when you are typing. Just type your normal install password and press return. If you choose to install CrushFTP as a service you can later undo this commands changes since CrushFTP will be started by the root process during your machine's bootup. How do I setup a multihomed machine to have several virtual servers? Open the advanced preferences. Click on the "IP Settings" tab. Add each of your virtual servers to the FTP servers' list. Specify for each server the IP of the net card that will be doing the serving. When you have more than one FTP server, when you open the user manager, it will always give you a drop down menu asking which server you want to edit the users for. The main thing is to make sure the IP's you enter are all owned by your machine by some net card. If they aren't, then it will say the port is in use. You can also have a lookup IP server setup, it just needs to be the last item in the list. When the lookup server is started, it listens on all available IPs. So by making it the last item, it will only get the net cards not specified by something else. How can I import users from another server? CrushFTP will automatically import users from "Serve-U", "MacOS X", and "WebStar". Just select import users from the "File" menu of CrushFTP. If you need to import other users, you can manually run CrushFTP from a terminal to generate users by passing a couple basic parameters to it. java -jar CrushFTP.jar -u "username" "password" "/home directory/for the user/" ["permissions"] The permissions option are CrushFTP specific permissions. Generate a user with the usermanager and assign the permissions you want. Then open the "0.XML" file for that user and copy the permissions from there. If no permissions are specified it defaults to download, view, and resume. An example for full permissions would be "rwvdxnkm". The same commands apply to Windows except you use a DOS window. Be sure to use "/" notation to separate directories and not "\". Example:"/C:\/Documents and Settings/some directory/files/". "C:\" is essentially just another folder as far as CrushFTP is concerned. How do I unban a user? Click on the "Prefs" tab on the main window. Select the banned IP in the list and click remove. How do I set my IP? Your IP is by default set for you. CrushFTP will hit a web page and retrieve what your outside IP is. It then displays that as your IP rather than the IP your OS reports. Many users are behind a NAT router, or some other internal network and their machine won't report their real IP. If for some reason you want to specify another IP you can do so, however the default configuration should work 99% of the time. Open the advanced preferences. Click on the "IP Settings" tab. Click on the FTP server you want to edit on the right, and click the edit button. For an IP that is attached to your machine, you can just enter it directly. If however your machine does not directly own the IP, you can't just enter it directly. You can however enter "manual" and then type it above with the "Hard Coded IP" field. Make

sure to also turn off the "Auto IP Discovery" or your IP will be overwritten when the IP is looked up again. Both the "lookup" and "manual" are special words for the IP. Both of them will listen on all connected IP's to your machine, so if you do have multiple net cards you won't want to use either "lookup" or "manual" but will instead want to specify the IP for each card. How do I limit uploaded files to just be web page type documents(.html,.jpg,.gif,.css, etc.)? Open the advanced preferences, and click on the "Verify File Content" tab. Add all the extensions of file types you want to allowƒleave the other fields blank. Then check the box for "File extensions must be in list, or reject upload?". Now only files that have extensions that are in the list can be uploaded. If you would like, you can also check the box "Deny changing of filename extensions?" so they can't be renamed to another extensions as well. How do I edit what the ticker is displaying? Open the advanced preferences, and click on the "Server Variables" tab. Scroll down to the variable %ticker_string%. Edit the value to be what you want.
