RPDP Secondary Literacy courses are $75 per credit: $45 per credit is paid online to UNLV upon registration; the remaining $30 per credit is paid to the RPDP instructor by check or money order (we cannot accept credit cards or cash) on the first day of class. If participants do NOT want UNLV credit, classes are only $30 per credit, and registration is through one of the RPDP Secondary Literacy Trainers (Saralyn Lasley or Thomasina Rose). RPDP & SNWP My Classroom Project--Teacher Action Research--ONLINE: In this 3-credit course, educators will develop and implement a classroom project that informs their teaching, employing the steps of the teacher action research process. Learners will examine their own instructional practices and/or student social or academic behavior to develop and implement a classroom project that will result in increased student achievement. Blended format: first and last meetings are face-to-face, plus weekly online collaboration. UNLV Course #: RPDP 539C RPDP Effective Strategies to Teach Vocabulary ONLINE: This one-credit course is intended for all secondary teachers (4-12). It will focus on using the findings of vocabulary research to design and implement effective, authentic approaches to vocabulary instruction, usage and assessment. Activities will include ways to maximize instruction effectiveness, create word rich environments, and encourage and assess vocabulary development. Instructor: William Landis Dates: January 26 February 15, 2015 (online course with 1 face-to-face on 1/ total Times: First session will meet at Sig Rogich Middle School at 4:30pm on January 26 Location: Sig Rogich Middle School, 235 Pavilion Center Drive, LV, Computer Lab UNLV Course #: RPDP 531A RPDP Internet Literacy--ONLINE: This one-credit course is intended for all teachers, grades The course includes methods of Internet safety and refining Internet searches for research and exploration. Participants will have the opportunity to complete specific Internet searches for NVACS/CCSS based resources matching each teacher s grade or subject. This class will provide the information and background teachers need to reach the technology demands of the 21 st century. Using all of the resources from the course, the final project is an

2 individualized NVACS/CCSS project designed to be implemented in the classroom. Instructor: Susan J. This course is designed to provide educators an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of classroom instruction and strategies to teach conventions of standard English grammar and usage, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and style analysis in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Using a writing workshop format, participants will engage in a variety of activities designed to model the teaching of all aspects of the 6-12 NVACS/CCSS for Language. Room #200 UNLV Course #: 539b RPDP Reading Comprehension--ONLINE: This one-credit course is intended for all reading and language arts teachers, grades Using current research to focus on instruction that is responsive to student interests and learning needs, this course will provide support for teachers who want to incorporate comprehension instruction into their daily lesson plans. Instructor: Thomasina Rose Dates: February 4 25, 2015 (online course with 1 face-to-face on 2/4--15 total contact hours) Times: First session will at RPDP at 4:30pm on February 4 Location: RPDP 515 W Cheyenne Avenue, North Las Vegas - Classroom # 37 UNLV Course #: RPDP 531b RPDP Understanding the NVACS/CCSS--Writing 6-12: This 3-credit course will focus on developing the ELA 6-12 Strand for writing within the Nevada Academic Content Standards. Strategies for teaching the three text types-- narrative, argumentative, and expository/informational writing will be introduced and modeled. Using the workshop model for instruction, participants will engage in reading and writing activities designed to reinforce content knowledge of strategies for writing and teaching writing with an emphasis on formal argument. Sessions will feature various aspects of literacy as it pertains to writing, and participants will actively write to

3 demonstrate an understanding of the writing process and modeled strategies. Instructor: Regina Johnson Dates: February 19 April 30, 2015 (no class on April 2 due to CCSD Spring Break) (45 total Times: Thursdays from 4:30pm 8:30pm Location: Veterans Tribute CTA, 2531 Vegas Drive: Building E, Room #124 UNLV Course #: 537i Nevada Formative Assessment Writing Tools, Grades 3-8 (UNLV Title: Analytic Trait Scoring) This one-credit class will prepare teachers to use the Nevada Formative Writing Tools effectively in their classrooms. Through these tools, participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the Nevada Academic Content Standards and best practices in writing. Participants will work collaboratively to develop lessons which shift writing instruction to better meet the demands of the NVACS/CCSS and better prepare students for the upcoming Smarter Balanced assessments. This class is suitable for ELA and reading teachers, grades 3-8. The course will enable participants to develop lessons, embed videostreaming, blogging, wikis and the development of a webquest in the classroom. The class is built around the four types of writing and how to teach them in a 21 st century environment. This course is designed to provide ALL 6-12 educators an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of

4 classroom instruction and strategies to teach collaborative discussions, including integrating multiple sources of information into presentations, designing presentations that strategically use digital media, adapting presentations to a variety of contexts and tasks, and evaluating a speaker s point of view. Instructor: Thomasina Rose Dates: March 4 25, 2015 (online course with 1 face-to-face on total contact hours Times: First session will meet on March 4 from 4:30pm-6:30pm at RPDP Location: RPDP, 515 West Cheyenne Avenue, North Las Vegas - Classroom #37 UNLV Course #: RPDP 539a RPDP Secondary Literacy Book Study Rigorous Reading, Grades BLENDED: This one-credit, blended learning course will focus on helping teachers provide purposeful and rigorous reading instruction aligned to the CCR Reading Anchor Standards. Based on Fisher and Frey s new book, Rigorous Reading, this class will address how to choose complex texts based on purpose and relevance; close reading and scaffolds for better student access to complex texts; collaborative conversations and using discourse to enhance student meaning making; ways to move students towards independent reading; and assessing student performance based on text dependent questions and effective feedback. All participants will receive a copy of Rigorous Reading by Fisher and Frey. Instructor: Saralyn Lasley Dates: Course runs April 8 25, Two face-to-face meetings: First face-to-face on Wednesday, 4/8 from 4:30 6:30; second face-to-face on Saturday, 4/25 from 8am 2pm (15 total. It will focus on using the findings of current brain research to design and implement cross-curricular teaching strategies. Activities will include ways to maximize instruction, enhance memory, and increase learning of content. To receive UNLV graduate credit, you must register with UNLV (if you are taking a course to recertify or move up the pay scale, you must apply for the UNLV credit) 2. To register for classes, you must be in the UNLV System. If you have not taken a UNLV course through RPDP since Spring of 2009, you are NOT in the system and must complete a Non-Degree Seeking Application. 3. Click on this link, Non-Degree Seeking Application, or go to RPDP.net How to Register, where you will find instructions on how to complete the application and a link to the Non-Degree Seeking Application. NOTE: On the application, under Enrollment Reasons, select Nevada RPDP. You will skip the portion about where you went to school, and do NOT send transcripts or apply for residency when completing the Non-degree Seeking Application.
