RPDP Secondary Literacy courses are $75 per credit: $45 per credit is paid online to UNLV upon registration; the remaining $30 per credit is paid to the RPDP instructor by check or money order (we cannot accept credit cards or cash) on the first day of class. RPDP & SNWP My Classroom Project--Teacher Action Research--ONLINE: In this 3-credit course, educators will develop and implement a classroom project that informs their teaching, employing the steps of the teacher action research process. Learners will examine their own instructional practices and/or student social or academic behavior to develop and implement a classroom project that will result in increased student achievement. Blended format: first and last meetings are face-to-face, plus weekly online collaboration. Activities will include ways to maximize instruction effectiveness, create word rich environments, and encourage and assess vocabulary development. Participants will have the opportunity to complete specific Internet searches for NVACS/CCSS based resources matching each teacher s grade or subject. This class will provide the information and background teachers need to reach the technology demands of the 21 st century. Using all of the resources from the course, the final project is an

This course is designed to provide educators an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of classroom instruction and strategies to teach conventions of standard English grammar and usage, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and style analysis in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Using a writing workshop format, participants will engage in a variety of activities designed to model the teaching of all aspects of the 6-12 NVACS/CCSS for Language. Strategies for teaching the three text types-- narrative, argumentative, and expository/informational writing will be introduced and modeled. Using the workshop model for instruction, participants will engage in reading and writing activities designed to reinforce content knowledge of strategies for writing and teaching writing with an emphasis on formal argument. Sessions will feature various aspects of literacy as it pertains to writing, and participants will actively write to
3 demonstrate an understanding of the writing process and modeled strategies. Through these tools, participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the Nevada Academic Content Standards and best practices in writing. Participants will work collaboratively to develop lessons which shift writing instruction to better meet the demands of the NVACS/CCSS and better prepare students for the upcoming Smarter Balanced assessments. Based on Fisher and Frey s new book, Rigorous Reading, this class will address how to choose complex texts based on purpose and relevance; close reading and scaffolds for better student access to complex texts; collaborative conversations and using discourse to enhance student meaning making; ways to move students towards independent reading; and assessing student performance based on text dependent questions and effective feedback. All participants will receive a copy of Rigorous Reading by Fisher and Frey. If you have not taken a UNLV course through RPDP since Spring of 2009, you are NOT in the system and must complete a Non-Degree Seeking Application. 3.
