Homeschooling an Alternative for the Child with Invisible Special Needs Adrienne Ehlert Bashista adriennebashista.net fafasd.org

About me

What does neurobehavioral special needs mean, anyway? Neuro-behavioral = brain-based disability/need that manifests itself behaviorally. Unwanted behaviors are a result of poor fit between what the child needs and his/her environment. Behaviors that result from brain differences cannot be punished (or rewarded) away. ADHD, Autism, FASD, OCD, Pediatric Bipolar, SPD, Tourette s, PDD, Learning Disabilities, Cognitive Disabilities

Our homeschooling journey it s not over yet! (Will it ever be?)

Why homeschool kids with NB special needs?

My son felt defeated by school because he was constantly faced with failure We also were faced with filing a lawsuit against the school for better services, or spending that money to educate him our way. We chose to spend the money and time on him directly. His behavioral problems are so complex that I honestly don't see how his teachers could provide him with the best education while simultaneously dealing with 20+ other children. No offense to the teachers, it just can't be done. ~Lynn B.

From

My son has ADHD, the schools treated his IEP like it was a bunch of ideas, the schools also failed to intervene on bullying for 2 years. His frustration and behavior intensified and in 4th grade he was depressed, significantly behind academically, had very low self esteem and the school was trying to push him into a self contained classroom for behavior problems. His behavior problems ie fighting were non existent until that school failed to intervene in bullying No 10 year old should be depressed or feel stupid because schools aren't doing their jobs and implementing what is necessary. ~Leah H.

I had two older, typical kids who I homeschooled, so when we brought our little guy home from the hospital we had already decided to homeschool him. At the time we did not know he had FASD. He is very hyper and impulsive and we knew this was the right choice for him. I can work with him and if he needs to stand or take a break we can do it. He also has trouble being in a group of noisy kids and he would have a lot of anger and meltdowns if he had to face it every day. I love being able to teach at their pace and slowing down until they get something so they can build on what they learn. ~Tammi

HOW to homeschool kids with NB special needs:

The answer to the how to do it question is basically the same as for neuro-typical kids. What are your goals? What are your child s goals? What is your child s learning style(s)? Where is your child developmentally? What are his/her interests? Where s your comfort level for living/teaching/working outside of the box? What s your budget (financial and time) & what resources are near? What are your state s legal requirements of homeschoolers?

But add in THIS important question: How badly was your child/family hurt by his/her experiences in the traditional classroom? Don t discount the need to heal. Before you commit to any one way of teaching/learning, consider de-schooling.

Methods of Homeschooling School at Home: Online schools Full year curriculum Online charter schools Unschooling: Follow child s interests No formal academics Most are in between!

Eclectic Structured Unstructured Experiential Mix of classes/ self-study Kinesthetic Auditory Visual Camps Co-ops Internships

Benefits of homeschooling kids with NB special needs: Forget an I.E.P. Homeschool IS the I.E.P.!

We can honor developmental age & learning style

We can adjust expectations to fit the abilities of each learner. We don t have to worry about getting behind or ahead.

We can adapt what we re doing to truly meet each individual child s needs.

Cons of homeschooling kids with NB special needs:

$$$$ Loss of income Cost of classes Cost of outings Cost of materials Cost of childcare

But what about

Socialization?

Teaching the HARD stuff?

Dealing with the REAL world?

Advice from homeschooling parents:

Be patient and don't try to do what the public schools do or expect. Remember the reasons you took your child out of PS and don't be afraid to be different and try new, radical techniques! Have courage! ~Melissa

Don t worry about where your child should be - let them learn at their own pace. Toss out what they won't need. Teach life skills and prepare them for the world out there. Don't just sit at a table - get out there and explore together whenever possible Encourage whatever your child loves. Take field trips. Take the day off when you need to. Short lessons with frequent breaks outside are sometimes needed. Give sensory breaks. Do the harder stuff when your child isn't tired. Use a timer when needed. Give them a visual schedule. Be flexible. Your child has years to learn what is needed to get through life. After taking them out of school, work on their self esteem and go at a slow place to let them adjust. ALWAYS look for new ideas to keep it fun. Stop worrying - you are the expert on your child. ~Barbara

Believe in yourself, you know your child better than anyone! If something isn't working don't be afraid to throw it out and find something new. Keep things simple and fun! ~Tammi V.

My advice would be to not measure your child against someone else's. If something isn't working don't be afraid to find something that will. Find out how your child learns best. Some children do better with hands on material. Don't over stress your self because some days won't go the way you planned! ~T.V.N.

Homeschooling kids with NB special needs in Iowa The parent, guardian, or legal or actual custodian of a child with a disability is not required to seek approval from the area education agency to provide competent private instruction for the child if the parent, guardian, or legal or actual custodian does not consent to initial evaluation or to reevaluation of the child for receipt of special education services or programs. Iowa Admin. Code (299A). Otherwise, parents may homeschool a child who has been identified as having special needs only if they have approval from the special education director of the Area Education Agency. Iowa Code 299A.9. Children may dual enroll in the public school and receive special education services. Iowa Code 299A.8; Iowa Admin. Code
