She advises health care leaders throughout the world, and her expertise has been recognized by her elected membership to the Institute of Medicine and her appointment to The Commonwealth Fund's Commission on a High Performance Health System, among other distinctions. She is a frequent speaker at major health care conferences on quality improvement and a tireless advocate for change. She previously served for 15 years as IHI s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Before that, she served as CEO of the Massachusetts Respiratory Hospital and as Senior Vice President of The Juran Institute. She began her career in health care as a staff nurse at Quincy Hospital (Quincy, MA), where she rose to become Chief Operating Officer. 2 Donald A. Goldmann, MD Chief Medical and Scientific Officer Don Goldmann, MD, works both internally and externally to deepen IHI s profile, credibility, and influence in health care and health promotion, with a focus on harvesting expertise, knowledge, and innovation from the field while forging relationships that further IHI s strategic aims and reach. He works to strengthen IHI s relationships with key allies and partners, including professional and academic societies and membership organizations, so that IHI can continually monitor the rapidly changing environment and foster relationships that give programs maximum leverage. Dr. Goldmann s career in clinical infectious diseases and epidemiology (with a focus on hospital-acquired infections) spans more than three decades. He remains on the infectious diseases clinical staff at Boston Children s Hospital, and he is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health. He co-directs a Harvard-wide T32 pediatric health services research training program. Dr. Goldmann currently serves on the boards of the National Public Health and Hospital Institute and AcademyHealth. Health care innovation Health services research with a focus on improvement science and implementation research Healthcare-associated infections Derek Feeley, DBA Executive Vice President Derek Feeley has executive-level responsibility for driving IHI s strategy across five core focus areas: Improvement Capability; Person- and Family-Centered Care; Patient Safety; Quality, Cost, and Value; and Triple Aim for Populations. His role is international in scope, guiding work to deliver on IHI s mission to improve health and health care around the world. Prior to joining IHI in 2013, Mr. Feeley was Director General for Health and Social Care and Chief Executive of the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland. In this role he was the principal adviser to Scottish Ministers on health and care issues and he provided direction to the work of NHS Boards in ensuring the delivery of high-quality health care. Mr. Feeley has a varied background in policy analysis gained during his thirty years in public service. From 2002 to 2004, he served as Principal Private Secretary to Scotland's First Minister, which then led to a new role developing a framework for service redesign in the NHS. Mr. Feeley also served as Director of Healthcare Policy and Strategy, with responsibility for advising the Scottish Government on all health care quality and patient safety issues. 3 Pierre M. Barker, MD Senior Vice President Pierre Barker, MD, a pediatrician by training and a South African by birth, is a renowned authority on improving health systems. He is responsible for IHI s expanding portfolio of largescale health systems improvement initiatives in low- and middle-income countries. Before joining IHI on a full-time basis, he served as Senior Advisor to IHI s programs in Africa and India and as Director of IHI s South Africa Projects. He has previously served as Medical Director of the University of North Carolina s Children s Hospital clinics and was responsible for leading health system-wide initiatives on improving access to care and chronic disease management. Dr. Barker also advises the World Health Organization on health systems strengthening and redesign of HIV care and infant feeding guidelines. Improving health systems in low- and middle-income countries Enhancing systems of care in the areas of maternal and child health and HIV/AIDS Redesigning HIV care and infant feeding guidelines Payer-led national initiatives to improve quality of health systems Improving access to care Improving outcomes for patients with chronic diseases Trissa Torres, MD, MSPH, FACPM Senior Vice President Trissa Torres work at IHI spans several strategic areas, including the pursuit of the IHI Triple Aim, the transformation of primary care, the creation of systems to ensure reliable care transitions, and engaging community partners to improve the health of populations and communities. A Preventive Medicine physician by training, Dr. Torres previously served for 18 years as Medical Director of Genesys HealthWorks at Genesys Health System in Michigan. There she led population health initiatives to transform care delivery to improve the health of the community. During her tenure at Genesys, Dr. Torres designed, implemented, evaluated, and evolved a novel care model anchored by Health Navigators, individuals who serve as extensions of primary care practice teams to engage patients in healthy behaviors and their own self-management, leveraging community resources to overcome barriers to better health. She has been actively involved with IHI's Triple Aim since its initial prototyping phase, serving initially as champion for her participating organization and more recently as Triple Aim faculty. 4 Kedar Mate, MD Senior Vice President Kedar Mate oversees the development of innovative system designs to implement high-quality health care both in the United States and in resource-limited settings abroad, also serving as IHI s Regional Senior Vice President for the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions. He works closely with IHI partners and faculty to create innovative new models of care delivery levering the science of improvement. Dr. Mate is an internal medicine physician, an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, and a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School's Division of Global Health Equity. He advises numerous international initiatives aiming to strengthen health systems to improve delivery of HIV, tuberculosis, and maternal and child health services, and is also a member of the editorial board for the Joint Commission Journal for Quality & Patient Safety. Haraden, PhD Vice President Carol Harden is a member of the IHI team responsible for developing innovative designs in patient care. She currently leads IHI's work with Health Improvement Scotland aimed at transforming the safety of every Scottish hospital over five years. She also leads work in Denmark, the South of England, and the USA to improve the safety of health care systems in these countries. Dr. Haraden is the executive lead for the IHI Patient Safety Executive Development Program. She has been a dean in higher education, a clinician, consultant, and researcher. She served on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Engineering Approaches to Improve Health Care, is a judge for several national quality awards, and is an associate editor for the journal, BMJ Quality and Safety. 5 Andrea Kabcenell, RN, MPH Vice President Andrea Kabcenell is on the research and development team and leads major IHI initiatives. Since 1995, she has directed Breakthrough Series Collaboratives and other improvement programs, including Pursuing Perfection, a national demonstration funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation designed to show that near-perfect, leading-edge performance is possible in health care. The current focus of her work is leadership for improvement, building effective networks to foster innovation and regional health improvement, and care for older adults with complex needs and for people of all ages with advanced illness. Prior to joining IHI, Ms. Kabcenell was a senior research associate in Cornell University's Department of Policy, Analysis, and Management focusing on chronic illness care, quality, and diffusion of innovation. She also served for four years as Program Officer at The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Key to this work is developing strategic partnerships that leverage innovation, pilot testing, implementation, and continuous learning across organizations, systems, professional societies, and entire countries. Previously, she served as Executive Director at IHI, designing new programs to impact cost and health care quality. Ms. Luther has over 25 years of experience in clinical and process improvement, focusing on large-scale change projects and program development, system improvement, rapid cycle change, developing and managing a portfolio of projects, and working with all levels of health care staff and leaders. Her clinical experience includes critical care, emergency room, trauma, and psychiatry. Prior to joining IHI, she held leadership positions at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center. She has experience in Lean and is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt. 6 Patricia A. Rutherford, RN, MS Vice President Patricia Rutherford is responsible for developing and testing innovations and new models of care in innovations in patient- and family-centered care; improving access to the right care, in the right place, at the right time; Transforming Care at the Bedside; optimizing care coordination and transitions in care; and clinical office practice redesign (in primary care and specialty practices). She was Project Director for the Transforming Care at the Bedside initiative, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and she served as Co-Investigator for the STate Action on Avoidable Rehospitalizations (STAAR) initiative, funded by the Commonwealth Fund. Her skills include knowledge of process improvement, innovation, and idealized design; coaching clinicians, staff, and senior leaders in organizations on process improvement; and management of all aspects of large-scale performance improvement initiatives. Federico, RPh Executive Director, Strategic Partners Frank Federico works in the areas of patient safety, application of reliability principles in health care, preventing surgical complications, and improving perinatal care. A registered pharmacist, he also serves as faculty for IHI's Patient Safety Executive Development Program. Mr. Federico has worked with IHI since 1996 as a faculty member and co-chair of a number of Patient Safety Collaboratives. Previously he was Program Director of the Office Practice Evaluation Program and a Loss Prevention/Patient Safety Specialist at the Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Affiliated Institutions in Cambridge, MA. His skills include coaching, process improvement, and implementing changes. 7 Carol Beasley, MPPM Vice President, Business Development Carol Beasley has overseen numerous projects and programs during her nine years at IHI, including leading work on end-stage renal disease, heading the IMPACT membership network, working on health information systems in primary care, and helping to launch and develop the IHI Triple Aim initiative, which focuses on improving population health and individuals experience of health care, while stabilizing or reducing per capita cost. As Vice President of Business Development she creates and develops new business opportunities, working collaboratively with IHI program leads, the research and development team, and marketing. Ms. Beasley also works closely with the IHI Executive Team to develop and implement IHI's overall mission, vision, key areas of focus and aims that broadly seek to improve health and health care. She is trained in management, strategy, leadership and organizational change, and holds a Masters in Public and Private Management from Yale University. IHI Triple Aim: better health and better care at lower cost Using health information technology to support care improvement Models for regional improvement Pedro Delgado, MSc Executive Director Pedro Delgado is the regional lead for IHI s portfolio of work in Latin America and Europe. A driving force in IHI s global strategy, he has led large-scale health system improvement efforts and networks globally, including initiatives with governments and health care systems in Latin America, Europe, Singapore, New Zealand, and the United States. He also has led pioneering improvement work linked to population health and education in early years. Mr. Delgado coaches teams and lectures extensively worldwide on patient safety and quality improvement. During his time at IHI, he also facilitated the Quality and Innovation Centers network, which included foundational members such as Kaiser Permanente s Performance Improvement Institute, Qulturum in Jönköping County in Sweden, and the James Anderson Center for Clinical Excellence at Cincinnati Children s Hospital. Before joining IHI, he worked for the UK National Health Service in hospital management and also led pioneering large-scale improvement efforts in Northern Ireland. His background is rich in diversity, including a brief period as a professional football (soccer) player and experience working in the mental health field. He holds summa cum laude degrees in Psychology and in Global Business, and an MSc in Healthcare Management and Leadership. 8 Sue Gullo, RN, BSN, MS Director Sue Gullo brings thirty-three years of health care experience to IHI, focusing for the past nine years on leading and directing organizations across multiple improvement work streams. Ms. Gullo has led the IHI Perinatal Community since 2004, the longest continuous perinatal safety collaborative nationally and internationally. She has been elected to the 2014 AWHONN (Association of Women s Health, Obstetrical and Neonatal Nursing) Board of Directors and is currently a member of multiple national Maternal-Child Health Advisory Committees. Previously, Ms. Gullo was a Director of Women s Services at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH. Her nursing experience also includes oncology and medical-surgical nursing. She feels fortunate to have been at the beginning of the patient safety movement and continues this focus as the core of her work at IHI. Maternal-child health Patient safety Somava S. Stout, MD, MS External Lead for Health Improvement Somava S. Stout, MD, MS, is helping to convene leaders across sectors to come together to improve the health of the population in the community context. She is deeply committed to improving the health and well-being of underserved people and communities. Dr. Stout directs the Innovation Fellows Program at the Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care and is Lead Transformation Adviser at the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA). Previously, she served as Vice President for Patient-Centered Medical Home Development at CHA, where she led a whole system transformation that garnered numerous national awards for achieving breakthrough results in the Triple Aim while improving joy and meaning of work for the workforce through the empowerment of frontline teams, patients, leaders, and communities.
