You may choose a group or triad of 3 graduate courses (9 credit hours) in 7 different subject areas, or you may create your own by selecting courses from different triads. The program provides opportunities for students who hold a BA or BS degree in Art Education, BFA, BA or a BS in a Visual Arts degree program, Art History and Museum Studies. This degree does not grant certification to teach art in K-12 schools. The program provides opportunities for students who hold a BA or BS degree in Art Education, BFA, BA or a BS in a Visual Arts degree program, Art History and Museum Studies. Museums of the 21st century are evolving. They are increasing in number, expanding in size, and becoming virtually available. Practical approaches are needed for incorporating contemporary art into curricula. This program explores museum education through dynamic discussions about readings on art, visual literacy through interpretation of culturally relevant images, museums, and curricula; engages in gallery activities and group discussions with opportunities for studio projects; and, creates new information and materials for classroom use. 2 8 Art & Art History Phone: Prerequisites: Bachelor s degree in art education or visual arts Biology The non-thesis Master of Science in Biology is offered online with no residency requirement. Lectures are available by Video On Demand. This 36-hour program is designed for high school and middle school teachers, scientists, researchers, or anyone who could benefit from an advanced education in biology. The Department has established itself as a leader nationwide in the successful delivery of its online Biology graduate degree program. Master of Science Contact: Brian Peterson/Robyn Schoenebeck Program: Biology Director: Dr. Janet Steele Biology msbiology@unk.edu Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree with an emphasis in Biology Phone: Business Administration The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) Online Degree Completion Program is ideal for working adults interested in skill and knowledge development as well as degree completion. A degree in business administration provides majors with knowledge of how businesses and organizations operate. Students will study the various functions of business and learn how they cooperate to build successful organizations. The UNK business programs are accredited by AACSB International. UNK graduates often find positions in management and management training programs, human relations, marketing, sales, or information technology. There are 25 credit hours of level courses required for every student. Additionally, students take credit hours in a minor area. Refer to page 14 for a list of UNK online minors. Preference will be given to those who have general studies completed Criminal Justice The online Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice is a degree completion program designed for students who may already have earned an associate s degree or who have completed the majority of their general education courses. This online program combines courses from the Kearney, Omaha, and Lincoln campuses, providing you with the best academic experience possible. Courses reflect current trends in justice, and faculty have both practitioner and research expertise. A highlight of the degree program is the intensive internship that will provide hands-on experience in the field. The internship is completed at a location convenient to the student. Past placements have included the Nebraska State Patrol and National Security Agency. The criminal justice field is experiencing sustained growth. Students have dozens of career paths to choose from, working in law enforcement, corrections, the courts, victims of crime, and with juvenile and special offender populations. This degree is designed for K-12 teachers in all areas and grade levels who are interested in becoming better classroom teachers. The Curriculum & Instruction advances the professional growth of educators, whether the goal is to expand work within a given discipline, develop a new endorsement area, or address particular instructional concerns. Areas of study are designed for: Elementary Education Instructional Effectiveness Early Childhood Education Reading/Special Education English as a Second Language Secondary Education Program: Curriculum and Instruction Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree with a standard Teaching Certificate

3 9 Curriculum & Instruction: English as a Second Language This Master of Arts in Education in Curriculum & Instruction degree is designed for public school teachers who would like to become certified in K-12 English as a Second Language (ESL). Students will be required to fulfill the 12 credit hours of core degree requirements in the MAE in Curriculum and Instruction as well as the concentration in ESL. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Program: Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in ESL Prerequisities: Bachelor s Degree with a standard Teaching Certificate. Driver Education Endorsement The Driver Education Endorsement is offered in a combined online and on-campus format and may be an addition to your Nebraska Teaching Certificate. This endorsement provides the courses necessary for non-certified teachers to be approved by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Students pursuing this certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. The undergraduate coursework may be completed online while the lab component must be completed at the Nebraska Safety Center Driving Range in Kearney, Nebraska. This lab component may be completed in a minimum of three to five days. Endorsement: Driver Education Endorsement Contact: Sherry Morrow Nebraska Safety Center Credit Hours: 9 credit hours morrows@unk.edu Prerequisites: To obtain a Driver Education Endorsement or equivalency of a Driver Education Endorsement you need to be at least 21 years of age. Phone: Format: Online with a minimum of 3-5 days residency required Early Childhood Unified (ECU) The Early Childhood Unified program is designed for in-service teachers, assistants in preschools, staff in HeadStart programs, and other non-traditional students who are unable to attend regular faceto-face classes at a university. Students pursuing early childhood certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Three options are available with Early Childhood Unified. They are: 1) ECU BA degree - Students with an ECU BA degree will have the opportunity to complete their Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Unified Teaching Endorsement (Birth through 3rd grade) while working in early childhood related places of employment. This early childhood degree prepares graduates to teach children ages 0-5 in special education settings and ages 0-8 in regular education settings. This is a degree completion program, which assumes that students will complete most of their general studies courses at a community college prior to transferring to UNK. 2) ECU Initial Certification -Graduates with an ECU Initial Certification will be prepared to teach children ages 0-5 in special education settings and ages 0-8 in regular education settings. This online early childhood program is offered in lieu of a traditional Bachelor s degree. A degree audit will examine the courses already completed toward the Initial Certification program and will determine how many of the program s 79 hours will be needed for completion. 3) ECU Additional Endorsement - This endorsement prepares graduates to teach children ages 0-5 in special education settings and ages 0-8 in regular education settings. Participants will already have their Bachelor s in teaching, which can be in any subject/discipline. The number of hours a participants needs in order to complete the degree is dependent upon the Teaching Endorsement that is currently held. For example, a participant with an Elementary Education endorsement generally needs to take 21 hours to complete the additional endorsement program. The coursework is offered online, while the Practicum is completed with experienced school administrators serving as mentors. This program meets the requirements for Administrative and Supervisory Certification in Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. 4 10 Education Administration Supervisor of Special Education The Master of Arts in Education Supervisor of Special Education is designed to provide the necessary background to serve as a Supervisor of Special Education. This program meets the requirements for Administrative and Supervisory Certification in Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification. Education Administration Curriculum Supervisor of Academic Area The Master of Arts in Education - Curriculum Supervisor of Academic Area is for the preparation of academic field supervisors. This program fulfills the requirements for the Standard Administrative and Supervisory Certificate with an endorsement in a specific field. It is also offered as a non-certification program. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification. Contact: Holly Peterson Program: Curriculum Supervisor of Academic Area Educational Administration petersonha@unk.edu Phone: Prerequisites: Must hold a currently valid endorsement in the academic area selected for this program, with two years of experience as a teacher in the content area. Education Administration Specialist School Superintendent The Education Specialist is an advanced degree for those who already hold a Master s degree in education. The Specialist degree prepares current administrators for the role of school superintendent. The coursework is offered online while the Field Study and Internship courses are completed with experienced school administrators and Educational Administration faculty serving as mentors. This 33-credit hour program meets the requirements for the Nebraska Professional Administrative and Supervisory Certificate, preparing candidates for superintendent positions in all public and parochial schools in Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. The UNK Educational Administration Department has established itself as a leader in the successful delivery of the Education Specialist Degree. NOTE: In order to be eligible for an endorsement as superintendent in the State of Nebraska, one must have earned a Master s degree as principal, or have completed an endorsement program as principal in an accredited Nebraska college or university. Out-of-state students who apply for the Educational Specialist degree and complete the degree program will need to check with their respective state certification officers. Out-of-state students who apply for the Educational Specialist degree and complete the degree program will not be recommended for endorsement as superintendent unless deemed otherwise by the Nebraska Department of Education. Education Specialist Contact: Holly Peterson Program: School Superintendent Educational Administration petersonha@unk.edu Credit Hours: 33 credit hours - 69 credit hours Phone: (depending on past degrees) Prerequisites: Master s Degree in Educational Administration and at least two years of teaching. If you do not hold a Master s degree in Educational Administration, contact Dr. Richard Meyer at meyerdc@unk.edu or Delivery Format: Online (except Field Study and Internship which may be completed off campus) English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement The online English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement provides teachers with current educational approaches to teaching ESL students. The program focuses on instructional methods, curriculum, and teaching materials that promote the mastery of English in order for students to achieve academically in all content areas. All coursework is presented online. This program is a 21-credit hour graduate supplemental endorsement which can be applied towards a Master of Curriculum and Instruction degree. The ESL Endorsement is approved by the Nebraska State Department of Education. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. To pursue this degree, students must have a Bachelor s degree and a standard teaching certificate. Endorsement: ESL Endorsement Credit Hours: 21 credit hours Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree and a standard teaching certificate

5 11 Gifted Education Endorsement The Gifted Endorsement is designed to prepare educators with the knowledge base and competencies necessary for the appropriate education of gifted and talented learners. These 18 credit hours are necessary for the Nebraska Supplementary Endorsement in Gifted Education. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. The 18 credit hours may be applied to the Master of Arts in Education degree in Special Education - Gifted Education (see page 13). The endorsement includes 18 hours of coursework offered online. Endorsement: Gifted Education Endorsement Credit Hours: 18 credit hours Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree - Teacher Certification History The Master of Arts in History at UNK is designed for a wide variety of persons interested in pursuing graduate education in historical study. The program offers credits for those just beginning a graduate career, teachers and others desiring further professional development, and those seeking greater personal fulfillment. Two options are available: thesis and non-thesis (for those interested in a terminal degree). Coursework for either option is offered both on campus and online. Students may choose to take all their courses online, or on campus, or they may choose to blend these delivery methods together in one program. A focused, yet eclectic professional program, the History master s degree can launch a potential career in a number of promising directions. Master of Arts Contact: Amber Alexander Program: History History alexanderaj@unk.edu Phone: Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree with at least 18 hours of History Instructional Technology The Master of Science in Education - Instructional Technology offers four concentrations for students to choose from -- (1) the Instructional Technology Concentration, (2) the Leadership in Instructional Technology Concentration, (3) the School Librarian Concentration, or (4) the Information Technology Concentration. The Instructional Technology Concentration focuses on the application aspects of computer and other technologies in education and business training. Graduates will be able to manage and use I.T. resources in their classrooms, buildings, districts, or workplaces. The Leadership in Instructional Technology Concentration focuses on developing leadership skills. The School Librarian Concentration focuses on developing school librarians with technological expertise. This concentration may lead to a School Librarian Endorsement, see page 13. The Information Technology Concentration is designed for K-12 teachers who teach IT courses or provide IT support to their school district. All courses are offered online. Master of Science in Education Program: Instructional Technology Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree Mild/Moderate K-6 Endorsement The Mild/Moderate K-6 Endorsement is designed for teachers who do not presently have an endorsement in Special Education in the state of Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Courses are offered online at the graduate level. Endorsement: Mild/Moderate K-6 Endorsement Credit Hours: credit hours (depending on transcript analysis) Prerequisites: Teacher Certification in any discipline (Initial teaching certification may be obtained through this program with the completion of additional courses.) Mild/Moderate 7-12 Endorsement The Mild/Moderate 7-12 Endorsement is designed for teachers who do not presently have an endorsement in Special Education in the state of Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Courses are offered online at the graduate level. Endorsement: Mild/Moderate 7-12 Endorsement Credit Hours: credit hours (depending upon transcript analysis) Prerequisites: Teacher Certification in any discipline (Initial teaching certification may be obtained through this program with the completion of additional courses.) Music Education The Department of Music & Performing Arts offers its graduate music program to serve three main purposes: 1. Provide music courses for those teachers who seek a Master of Arts in Education-Music Education degree; 2. Allow students seeking personal development hours to enroll in online courses if they are not interested in pursuing a full degree program, and 3. Provide for graduate students experiences which will serve their cultural and professional needs. At least one Music course will be available each Fall and Spring semester with three to four music courses offered each Summer. Several non-music degree program courses are available each Fall, Spring and Summer. These courses will all be offered within a 3-year period. 6 12 Phone: Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree in Music Organizational and Relational Communication Comprehensive The B.S. in Organizational and Relational Communication Comprehensive is a degree completion program designed for those students who may already have earned an Associate Degree or have most, if not all, of their general studies completed. UNK s Department of Communication is delivering the comprehensive major online which totals 45 credit hours. This consists of 33 credit hours of required Organizational and Relational Communication courses and 12 credit hours of a support track area that has been approved by their advisor. Bachelor of Science Contact: Dr. Fletcher Ziwoya Program: Organizational and Relational Communication Comprehensive Communications ziwoyaf2@unk.edu Phone: Credit Hours: 45 credit hours (33 credit hours of required Organizational & Relational Communication courses and 12 credit hours of an approved support track) Prerequisites: Associate Degree or the majority of the general studies requirements completed Physical Education The MAE in Physical Education Master Teacher is a 36 credit hour program designed for those teachers who prefer a broader understanding of pedagogical practices and a greater skillfulness in delivery of instruction including the ability to gather and use data to assess student learning and revise or design curriculum. With two tracks available, teachers have the option of choosing either the 1) Pedagogy Emphasis or 2) Special Populations Emphasis. The Pedagogy Emphasis provides graduates with advanced knowledge and competence in the teaching of physical education in elementary to post-secondary school settings. The Special Population Emphasis provides graduates with advanced knowledge and competence in providing physical education to students with disabilities and leads to the endorsement in Adapted Physical Education issued by the Nebraska Department of Education. Contact: Dr. Nita Unruh Program: Physical Education Master Teacher Health, Physical Education & Recreation unruhnc@unk.edu Prerequisite: Bachelor s Degree with a Teaching Certificate Phone: Pre-Speech Language Pathology Coursework The Pre-Speech Language Pathology (Pre-SLP) online courses are designed to allow rural and non-traditional students the opportunity to complete prerequisite undergraduate deficiencies necessary to pursue a graduate degree in Communication Disorders. Specifically, the course sequence is primarily intended for students from another discipline to prepare for entry into a Masters degree program in Speech-Language Pathology or a Doctoral degree program in Audiology. There is no degree associated with the Pre-SLP coursework but rather consists of 11 undergraduate courses or 34 credit hours. To begin, students should have completed all General Studies requirements or hold an undergraduate degree in a major other than communication disorders. For eventual SLP certification, a student must complete a Masters Degree and coursework addressing foundation knowledge outside the discipline of Communication Disorders that is generally obtained during undergraduate education, including coursework in the Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Social/Behavioral Sciences. Program: Pre-Speech Language Pathology Coursework Contact: Dr. Linda Crowe Course Level: Undergraduate Communication Disorders Credit Hours: 34 credit hours crowelk@unk.edu Prerequisites: None Phone: Reading PK-12 The MAE in Reading PK-12 is a 36-credit hour program offered in a convenient online format for educators who are interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and methodology to diagnose and facilitate instructional strategies. This may include classroom teachers, resource teachers, reading specialists or school administrators. All coursework is presented online. This program provides you with the opportunity to network with other colleagues throughout the nation who have similar career goals. This MAE in Reading PK-12 Program prepares educators for professional certification with a Reading PK-12 endorsement in the state of Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. To pursue this degree, students must have a Bachelor s degree and a standard teaching certificate. Program: Reading PK-12 Prerequisites: Bachelor s degree and standard teaching certificate

7 13 School Librarian Endorsement The School Librarian endorsement focuses on developing school librarians with technological expertise. This endorsement may be applied to a Master of Science in Education - Instructional Technology degree, see page 10. Students pursuing this endorsement in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Endorsement: School Librarian Endorsement Credit Hours: 30 credit hours Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree - Teacher Certification Science/Math Education The Master of Science in Education: Science/Math Education is a 36 credit hour program designed for Science and Math teachers in Grades 7 through 12 who are interested in becoming better teachers. Students may choose their 12 credit hour major emphases from either Biology, Chemistry, Math or Physical Science/Physics. All coursework is available online and includes both content and pedagogy. Master of Science in Education Contact: Dr. Christopher Exstrom Program: Science/Math Education Chemistry msedsci@unk.edu Phone: Prerequisities: Bachelor s Degree with a teaching endorsement in Biology, Math, Chemistry, Natural Science, Physics or Physical Science with a standard Teaching Certificate Sociology The Bachelor of Science in Sociology is a 36 credit hour online degree completion program designed for students who have an associates degree or have taken most of their general studies classes. The BS in Sociology degree requires a total of 12 courses or 36 student credit hours of coursework. Five courses are required for every student, and seven courses are part of the general sociology emphasis. In addition a minor of 24 credit hours is required. Spanish Education The MAE in Spanish Education is designed for K-12 Spanish teachers who would like to continue their education through the study of an online graduate degree in Spanish education. The program consists of 18 hours of Spanish coursework and 18 hours of education-related coursework primarily focused on second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy. Students will have the option of either completing a 6-hour thesis or combining Spanish courses with summer study abroad options. This graduate program is unique because it is one of the few online programs in the country that focuses on Spanish education. The online format along with potential study abroad options enables students to conveniently focus on both their Spanish proficiency as well as their knowledge of foreign and second language pedagogy. The MAE in Spanish Education would enable graduates to pursue additional career opportunities teaching Spanish at a community colleges or serve as lecturers and/or adjuncts at colleges and universities. It would also prepare graduates to pursue doctoral programs in education. This degree is not designed for students who are interested in obtaining a doctoral degree in Spanish. 8 14 Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree - Teacher Certification Nebraska teachers should complete Introduction to Exceptionalities or equivalent at either the undergraduate (SPED 234) or graduate (TESE 821P) level, if they have not already met this 3 credit hour special education requirement. Special Education: Mild/Moderate Disabilities The Master of Arts in Education: Special Education - Mild/Moderate Disabilities degree is designed for teachers who currently hold a teaching certificate in any discipline and would like to obtain certification in special education in the state of Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Courses are offered online at the graduate level. Program: Special Education: Mild/Moderate Disabilities Prerequisites: Bachelor s Degree Teacher Certification plus CDIS Normal & Disordered Language Development or equivalent OR Bachelor s Degree and Undergraduate Professional Sequence Classes Transitional Certification Program The Transitional Certification program is designed for those individuals who already have a B.A. or B.S. degree in a specific grade 7-12 subject area. You may be a recent college graduate or a mid-career professional who is eager to become a teacher but have personal or professional commitments which make it difficult to attend on-campus college classes. The three 6-credit hour courses may be completed online while the supervised field experiences and student teaching are completed in your community. This program consists of 18 credit hours of online graduate teacher education coursework and 6 credit hours of student teaching. If an academic review of transcripts indicates a deficiency in a content area, additional coursework may be required. Because this program leads to initial teaching certification in Nebraska only, and requires field experiences arranged with participating school districts in Nebraska, it is only available to residents of Nebraska.
