3 Welcome from Vasant Lad, BAM&S, MASc Welcome to the Ayurvedic Institute. I personally, deeply, appreciate you coming here in order to learn Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a way of life and an art of living in harmony with the environment and the present situation. Life is divine. Our life is a good teacher and our daily life is our good friend. Within this lifetime, we learn a lot about ourselves. That learning is sacred and will open the door to the divine love. So this is a time to remain together, share together, and keep the heart open. Through that openness, awareness will act. Let awareness resolve all the problems of life. I wish you all the best in your journey of learning and look forward to seeing you soon. 4 OL Student Handbook Introduction from the Online Program Coordinator Greetings Welcome to the online learning program at the Ayurvedic Institute. This handbook serves as an introduction to our online program, policies and procedures. It will give you an idea of what we expect during your time online with the Ayurvedic Institute. As you may already know, online and blended learning courses provide amazing flexibility in allowing students to learn Ayurveda from the comfort of their own home. It saves you time, travel costs, and fit nicely into your already busy life. This unique opportunity offers basic Ayurvedic courses to help grow and enhance your Ayurvedic knowledge. All of our courses will provide a thorough understanding of the basic principles and practices of Ayurveda and will include homework, quizzes, final exams and forum assignments. We hope that each student will utilize their online time productively and keep an open mind to this nontraditional way of learning Ayurveda. Online learning, just like a regular classroom, requires students to be 100% attentive to the information at hand. To be successful in this new style of learning, students must be self-motivated, disciplined and ensure that all assignments and course requirements are completed on time. This handbook has been prepared to help you become acquainted with the aims, policies, and academic activities of our online program. 5 Ayurvedic Institute General Policies EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY At, we use the time-honored Vedic approach to education, teaching from an oral tradition based on personal growth through spirituality. The teacher shares knowledge and experiences that help the student learn the theory and practices of Ayurveda. Each student learns Ayurvedic principles and practices that, when integrated into their lifestyle, brings peace and balance to the body, mind and soul. We provide an environment in which our students can find the freedom to learn and make choices that promote self-healing. ONLINE OBJECTIVE Vasant Lad and the Ayurvedic Institute strive to meet the needs of Ayurvedic students from around the world, and online learning is a catalyst in making this possible. Our Online Learning (OL) Program combines our Ayurvedic Studies Program Level 1 (ASP1) with online learning technology to reach students who are not able to participate in our on-campus program. Our Online Program will encompass different styles of online learning technology, while offering continuous student support through instructor involvement and a flexible log-on schedule. GOAL Our goal is to integrate Ayurveda with modern medicine, yoga, Jyotish, other healing disciplines, and the individual Self to bring about total health, awareness, and harmony. It is the dream of Vasant Lad and the goal of the Ayurvedic Institute to offer a complete program of Ayurvedic study. The curriculum is similar to that taught in the traditional Ayurvedic colleges in India. 6 Online Learning Student Conduct Avoid language that may come across as strong or offensive Language can easily be misinterpreted when written. Please review all comments and statements before deciding to post. Humor and sarcasm can easily be misinterpreted, please try to communicate in a straightforward and professional manner at all times. Read first, write later You can find many answers to questions already in the forum, please read all posts and comments before asking or commenting, as your question may have already been answered. An online classroom is still a classroom Although the courses are online, appropriate classroom behavior is still mandatory. Please respect fellow classmates and instructors. The language of the internet Do not write using all capital letters, it is considered shouting. Consider the privacy of others Please ask permission prior to giving out a classmate s address or other information. addresses are not to be used for personal business or marketing. It is important to respect their feelings and opinions though they may differ from your own. Be forgiving If someone states something that you find offensive, mention this to the instructor. Remember that the person contributing to the discussion might be new to this form of communication. What you find offensive may quite possibly have been unintentional and can best be cleared up by the instructor. 6

7 Faculty Expectations Enrolling in our OL classes at is a serious investment of money, time, and effort. To be successful, students need to be aware of the challenges ahead of them and be willing and able to work toward meeting those challenges. Knowing what the faculty expects helps students get the most out of their online learning experience. Students should demonstrate: 1. Desire to learn Display a positive attitude by viewing each course as an opportunity to learn something new. Actively engage in gaining knowledge and skills from each course and assignment. Structure time to make classes and studying a priority. Respect your fellow online classmates views and opinions. Be responsible for your own success. 2. Responsibility for Learning Stay informed about course requirements. Develop effective study strategies. Use time and other resources wisely. Complete and submit ALL assignments on time. Communicate with the instructor when you have questions. Seek help in a timely manner. 3. Honesty/Integrity Do your own work, without compromise. Be honest in all communications, oral and written. Comply with the Student Handbook and conduct. 4. Respect Respect diverse opinions, backgrounds, and life experiences of others. Show respect for instructors knowledge, experience, and education. 5. 8 Online Programs Individual Courses These courses are the foundation for the educational programs offered at the Ayurvedic Institute and provide a thorough understanding of the basic principles and practices of Ayurveda. They include philosophy, theory, assessment, and management. All courses can be taken individually at a per course rate. Students who have successfully passed their courses will receive a printable digital Certificate of Completion. For an official certificate from, there is a $30 fee. This fee includes shipping to destinations within the United States. Students outside the US will be charged for shipping. Pitta dosha (the fire principle), its subtypes, and the effects when increased and decreased. Kapha dosha (the earth principle), its subtypes, and the effects when increased and decreased. Prakruti (constitution). Vikruti (constitutional disorders). The mind; manas prakruti and manas vikruti. The concept of agni (transformation). The six tastes and the process of digestion. Introduction to dhatus (body tissues). Introduction to the concept of srotas (functional systems in the body). Introduction to ojas, tejas, and prana. 8

9 Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) and Medical Terminology These courses provide a basic framework of anatomy and physiology that supports our ASP1 program. It is designed to help you to learn and understand medical terminology by breaking it down into its component parts, and learning the meaning of the parts. Both courses taught concurrently, assist the student in learning how to pronounce, spell, and define medical terms. Please note that this course provides information at an introductory level; the material is presented primarily from a Western point of view and does not necessarily cover an Ayurvedic perspective. All students are required to know A&P and Medical Terminology. Students with prior A&P and Medical Terminology experience may be exempt, but will need to provide the following for approval: Current professional work in a medical discipline actively using knowledge of A & P or A college level course of a minimum of 40 class hours in A & P taken within the last two years. If approved, an exemption will waive your attendance and course requirements. It is recommended that students review the A&P course. Refunds for the course are given after receiving the course transcript and approval from the Online Registrar or Online Program Coordinator. Ayuryoga Ayuryoga applies the principles and understanding of Ayurveda to the practice of yoga. Through individual practice, students gain a personal understanding of the effect yoga has on the gunas, constitutional balance, and how to restore and maintain that balance. Class participation is focused on understanding Ayurvedic applications and is not intended as a personal yoga routine. Students are required to establish personal yoga routines outside of the curriculum. The concepts taught are supportive of all Ayurvedic constitutions. Students are encouraged to practice what they have learned regardless of personal yoga preferences. Foundational Skills In this course, you will learn to recognize the connection between yourself and your environment. You will learn the philosophies of Ayurveda and how to incorporate them into your daily routine. At the end of this course, you will have the ability to create new patterns of thinking and acting by observing, experiencing and understanding our prakruti and vikruti relationship. 9

10 Ayurvedic Nutrition In this course, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the Ayurvedic principles of nutrition. This includes food preparation, the use of spices and seasonings, healthy eating practices and how to incorporate them into your personal and professional life for better health and balance. Sanskrit This introductory level course is not intended to teach Sanskrit as a second language, but include basic Sanskrit grammar. You will learn to read, write, and recite the Sanskrit alphabet and learn a limited number of sutras, and related Ayurvedic vocabulary. This course is taught in a primarily academic style, in which chanting may or may not be offered. 10

12 *The application fee is waived for OL ASP 1, 1 st trimester students who transfer to the ASP 1, 2 nd trimester on campus program. Students wishing to transfer must pay $100 to take the oral exam. Upon passing, students will be eligible to enter the on campus program. Please note that the oral exam fee is non-refundable. **Tuition cost does not include books and shipping. Tuition and Fee Policies Registration and administration fees are non-refundable and it is not part of tuition costs. Tuition payments for all courses must be paid in full before the program start date. Tuition is not adjusted or refunded for classes missed by the student. If a student withdraws from any course, the Ayurvedic Institute retains a portion of the tuition according to the Course Reimbursement Schedule stated below, in addition to the full registration fee. Books are only refundable if they are unused and returned before the first day of class. Please note that only the cost of books will be refunded upon return, and not the shipping fees. If the student is dismissed, the Ayurvedic Institute will retain a portion of the paid tuition to cover any unpaid fees, and refund the balance in accordance with the Course Reimbursement Schedule. There is a late fee of $75 if the registration deadline is missed. *Adjustments, cancellations and transfers. Once tuition is paid, adjustments cannot be made after the 4 th week of class. A $50 fee will be charged if you decide to drop, cancel or transfer between courses once the program starts. 13 General Online Policies Attendance Students are expected to complete all assignments and log into their classes at least once a week (depending on the course they are taking). Failure to do so may result in removal from our program. Online to On-Campus Transfer Upon successful completion of the summer or winter courses, students will obtain a Certificate of Completion, and may be eligible to apply to our on-campus ASP1 Level Program to complete the 2 nd and 3 rd Trimesters. Students wishing to transfer must pay $100 to take the oral exam. Upon passing, students will be eligible to enter the on campus program. Please note that the oral exam fee is nonrefundable. Students will have up to two academic years to apply for the on campus ASP1, 2 nd and 3 rd trimester program. Online students must register for on-campus transfer between mid October and November of the academic year that they plan on attending. An instructional from the Oncampus registrar will be sent with further deadlines and information about transferring. Student Expectations The faculty and staff at are here to support our students and ensure their success. We expect our students to work at their highest potential to succeed. Here are some guidelines to ensure your success: 1. Attendance count as a percentage of your final grade in EACH class 2. Students must log into EACH class and SUBMIT ALL REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS to be considered in attendance for that week s assignment, (weeks are defined as Sundays through Saturdays). If a student misses three consecutive weeks of class without notification to their instructor, they will be considered a NO SHOW and will ultimately, be dropped from the class. The student is not eligible for a refund. No shows will affect your final grade. Please be sure to contribute to each class! 3. To stay on track we strongly encourage our students to complete all required assignments on or before Saturday at midnight United States Mountain Standard Time (US MST, or Daylight Saving Time in the summer) for each class. It is your responsibility to contact your teacher if this cannot be done. Extenuating circumstances may apply. (Students may follow the United States MST on onlinelearning.ayurveda.com). Please review your course syllabus for more grading and assignment policies as it varies from class to class. 4. Course modules will be assigned on a weekly basis according to the Course Schedule and include objectives and expectations for completing homework assignments. You are expected to actively participate and log in at least twice a week. This includes completion of assigned readings, homework assignments, tests or quizzes, and participation in online discussions. A course week runs from Sunday through Saturday, ending on Saturday at 11:59 p.m. United States Mountain Standard Time. All work assigned during the weekly course module(s) must be turned in by this deadline. Late work will not be accepted. We suggest 13

14 that you review all course content in the week's assigned module(s) to get a feel of what is expected during the course week and to help you plan your time wisely. 5. If you have a question about a course, contact your instructor first. He/she is your first point of contact. 6. It is your responsibility to have access to a computer to complete your coursework each week. We advise that you have a back up plan in the event that there is a problem with the main computer you use. 7. All student must have: a. The ability to access information via the internet b. The ability to use online associated tools, including discussion boards, chat rooms, online testing and assignment submission features c. The ability to use word processing software and to save documents in alternate formats d. The ability to send, receive and include attachments using e. The ability to demonstrate netiquette (appropriate online conduct) Instruction Each instructor at brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the courses, which translates into a diversity of teaching styles. In the spirit of academic freedom, the Dean of Education and Online Program Coordinator support the Online Education Team, and instructors in the development and delivery of the course and its content. In all matters pertaining to learning objectives, performance requirements, and student expectations, the course syllabus and this handbook, will be referred to as a contract between the student, the instructor, and. All students are expected to contact their instructors regarding all matters pertaining to the course. If a student suspects that an instructor or any Ayurvedic Institute staff member is discriminating against them, please contact the Online Program Coordinator via onlinelearning@ayurveda.com. Students with disabilities should contact the registrar if any assistance needed. Leave of Absence A leave of absence is granted only to students who wish to temporarily interrupt their online training for personal or medical reasons. A request for a leave must be made in advance via . The student must submit Leave of Absence notification to the Online Registrar or Online Program Coordinator for final approval. 14

15 Plagiarism & Copyright Plagiarism expects all students to practice academic honesty and ethical conduct. The Ayurvedic Institute regards plagiarism, cheating on examinations, falsification of papers, nonsanctioned collaboration, and misuse of library material, computer material, or any other material published or unpublished, as a violation of academic honesty. A first instance of plagiarism will result in a zero for that particular assignment. A second instance of plagiarism whether in that same course or another course will result in failure of the course. A third instance of plagiarism whether in the same course or another course will result in being dropped from our program. What, exactly, is plagiarism?* Many people think of plagiarism as copying another s work or borrowing someone else s original ideas. Terms like copying and borrowing can disguise the seriousness of the offense. Any unreferenced use of the written or spoken material of another, or previously submitted work of the student s own, constitutes plagiarism. Paraphrasing the thoughts or written work of another without reference is also plagiarism. Most cases of plagiarism can be avoided by citing sources. Simply acknowledging that a certain material has been borrowed or used, and providing your audience with the information necessary to find the source is usually enough to prevent plagiarism. *Source: Copyright Material All materials used in all parts of the Ayurvedic Institute Continuing Education Blending Learning Course are property of the Ayurvedic Institute and cannot be copied, duplicated, or shared. Sharing includes but is not limited to: allowing others to access your material, view the video material you have access to or showing the videos in a classroom setting. During the course, students may view, download or obtain copies of client paperwork and recommendation handouts. Electronic versions of consultation documents are provided for student use only and are to be treated as any other copyrighted material. *Copyright is a form of legal protection provided by U.S., law, Title 17 U.S.C. 512(c) (2), that protects an owner s right to control the reproduction, distribution, performance, display and transmission of a copyrighted work. Generally, under the law, one who engages in any of these activities without obtaining the copyright owner s permission may be liable for infringement. Source: Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing is a general term that describes software programs that allow computer users, utilizing the same P2P software, to connect with each other and directly access digital files from one another s hard drives. Many copyrighted works may be stored in digital form, such as software, movies, videos, photographs, etc. Through P2P file sharing, it has become increasingly easy to store and transfer these copyrighted works to others, thus increasing the risk that users of P2P software and file-sharing technology will infringe the copyright protections of content owners. If P2P file-sharing applications are installed on a student s computer, the student may be sharing someone else s copyrighted materials without realizing they are doing so. A student should be careful not to download and share copyrighted works with others. The transfer and distribution of these works without authorization of the copyright holder is illegal and prohibited. 16

17 Quizzes, Exams, and Grading All students must obtain a 70% or higher to pass their course. uses the following grading scheme: Letter Grade Numerical Grade GPA A % 4.0 A B B C C NP- Less than 69 *NP = No Pass All Online students are required to pass every course relative to the above requirements to remain in the program, and qualify for a Certificate of Completion as well as to be eligible for an on-campus transfer. Course instructors will generate warning forms and s to any student(s) who appear to be failing or struggling. Students are required to remedy the situation as recommended by the instructor and/or Online Learning Coordinator. Passing Each Module: Passing each module does not mean that you ve passed the quiz/exam. It simply means you have completed only that module. Completing Each Module: To move forward successfully, every student must complete all modules, including the survey. This will require students to mark every assignment as complete. If the assignment is not marked as complete, the student will not be able to move on to the next module. In order to earn a Certificate of Completion the following are required: a. Successful completion of all course work, assignments, quizzes, exams and online participation b. Full payment of tuition and fees c. Successfully pass orientation including Acknowledgment of Handbook Confirmation Statement d. 70% or higher in all courses *Students can print their online certificate free of charge, or pay $30 plus shipping to have us print and ship it to them. Overall grades can take up to two weeks before they are available. There will be no extension or grace periods at the end of the course. Your overall grade is based on a weighted average not 17

18 an overall average, which means instead of each point contributing equally to the final average, some assignments and points contribute more than others in factoring your final grade. Retakes: If a student fails a midterm or final exam due to an excusable emergency, he or she may be able to re-take the test based on the instructor s discretion. There will be a fee of $50.00 charged to a student for any re-take, which must be paid in full before re-taking the exam. Each student is limited to one (1) re-take of an exam in any one subject during the program. Online Learning Internal/External Message Protocol All correspondence for the duration of the program is conducted through our online program host, SimplyDigi. Once you are able to login to the program you will also have access to our online messaging system. To make sure you receive s from our Ayurvedic Institute Online site please add donotreply@simplydigi.com to your 's safe sender list (aka whitelist). A safe sender list/whitelist is a list of addresses that you want to receive s from. In addition, if you find from donotreply@simplydigi.com in your spam or junk folder, tell your software that it is not spam by hitting the not spam or not junk button. 19 Student Transcripts and Grievances Progress Reports and Transcripts At the end of the program, each student will have access to view his or her transcript. These transcripts are maintained in the student s profile on our online site, as well as in the student s permanent files in our database. Students may request an official copy of their academic records at anytime by contacting the online registrar. An additional fee will apply. Student Grievance(s) Students with grievances pertaining to Ayurvedic Institute Online Education Department, please follow the steps below to address the situation. 1. Address the department or person(s) directly via in a non-confrontational manner. 2. If the situation is not resolved, please the Online Program Coordinator or Dean of Education with your grievances. 3. If a concern is not resolved within the school, it will be taken to the AI Board of Directors for resolution. 4. If still not resolved, the matter will be handled through independent arbitration and the student may contact the New Mexico Higher Education Department at Please understand there will be no adverse action taken against the student for registering the concern. 19

20 Disciplinary Actions Probation: Probation is a disciplinary action that results in the change of a student s status. While on probation, a student may lose some privileges based on the nature of their actions. A student put on probation will receive an Notice of Probationary Status by the Dean of Education when any of the following situations occur: Absenteeism: A student s unexcused absence exceeds 20% of the scheduled sessions per subject. Exam and Coursework: Incomplete exams or coursework by the scheduled deadline dates. Grades: Failing a course. Conduct: Violation of OL course or Institute policies. Depending on the severity of the violation, students will receive a Conduct Warning Notice for the first violation and probation for the second. Any violation could result in dismissal. Tuition: Failure to pay tuition according to AI policy. Removal from Probation: Students will remain on probation until the problem is corrected to the satisfaction of the Online Department and the Instructor. Dismissal: The following are conditions in which a student may be dismissed: Student fails to remedy their probation status within the required time frame Student receives three written Conduct Warnings (NOTE: Depending on the severity of the misconduct, the student may be dismissed immediately.)
