1 Faculty Biographies Shereen Arent, Managing Director of Legal Advocacy at the American Diabetes Association (ADA), coordinates a nationwide campaign to eliminate discrimination against people with diabetes at the workplace, school, and throughout their lives through the use of education to prevent discrimination, litigation, legislation, and regulatory reform. Prior to coming to ADA in 1999, Shereen established the first Equal Employment Opportunity office for the Architect of the Capitol, an agency of Congress, and was a partner at two public interest law firms, Youngdahl & Youngdahl in Little Rock, Arkansas and Newman & Newell in Washington, D.C. While in private practice, she focused on union-side labor law and employment discrimination litigation, often combining the two to represent unions as plaintiffs in employment discrimination class actions. Shereen also served as law clerk to Hon. Phyllis A. Kravitch, United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. She is a graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School, and was a Wasserstein Public Interest Fellow at Harvard Law School for the academic year. Steve Bieringer serves as Major Projects Manager for Legal Advocacy at the American Diabetes Association. He began this position in January after five years as the Association s State Government Relations Director for twelve Rocky Mountain and Pacific Northwest states. In that capacity, Steve assisted people who face diabetes related discrimination, trained staff and volunteers in discrimination related issues, and led legislative and regulatory efforts to improve the lives of people with diabetes. Prior to his current six years at the American Diabetes Association, Steve built thirty years of legislative, political, and community advocacy experience with the AFL-CIO, including several years as a Regional Director, and as a political and legislative consultant. His professional background is complemented by a working knowledge of thirty-nine years of living with Type 1 diabetes. He sits on the Colorado boards of La Rasa, the American Jewish Committee, and Labor s Community Agency, as well as the Colorado Diabetes Advisory Committee. Steve has a Master s Degree in Urban Studies. Brian L. Dimmick is a staff attorney at the American Diabetes Association. In this position, he focuses on the Association s efforts to provide assistance to private and government attorneys working to protect the rights of people with diabetes and to end discrimination in employment, education, correctional institutions and other areas. Before joining ADA in 2004, he was a Skadden Fellow and attorney with Disability Rights Advocates, a non-profit law firm in Oakland, California dedicated to protecting and advancing the civil rights of people with disabilities through high-impact litigation. Brian is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Stanford Law School. Brian East is a senior attorney in the Legal Services Unit of Advocacy, Inc., the Texas "protection and advocacy system" for persons with disabilities. He provides technical assistance to advocates, and representation to persons with disabilities, in a variety of 1
2 areas, and is a frequent presenter on ADA issues. He is the Disability chapter co-editor for the upcoming 4th edition of Schlei & Lindemann, Employment Discrimination Law (BNA), and is the co-author and editor of the chapter on "Workers with Disabilities" in the Employee & Union Member Guide to Labor Law (West Group 2002). He is a member of the American Diabetes Association s Legal Advocacy Subcommittee. Brian is a graduate of the University of Texas School of Law. He began in private practice in Austin in 1982, and since 1989 has concentrated his practice in employment and civil rights law. Michael A. Greene has been with Rosenthal & Greene, P.C., Portland, Oregon since He is a member of the Oregon, California, and Idaho State Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Circuit Judge Pro Tem, Multnomah County, Oregon (2000-present) and the Oregon State Bar Legal Ethics Committee (member and Chair, ). Actively involved with the American Diabetes Association, Michael has served as the Association s Chair of the Board ( ), Chair of the ADA Research Foundation ( ), and Legal Advocacy Subcommittee (member since 1999; Chair ). Michael s list of commendations includes: Martindale-Hubbell AV rating (since 1985); Best Lawyers in America (since 1995); Dr. Charles H. Best Award for Distinguished Service to the American Diabetes Association (1994); Wendell Mayes, Jr. Award for Outstanding Service in the Cause of Diabetes (2000); and Award of Merit (Multnomah Bar Association, 2005). He is a graduate of Stanford Law School. John Griffin is a trial lawyer from Victoria, Texas. A successful advocate in both trial and appellate courts, John is a member of the National Employment Lawyers Association, Texas Employment Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, The Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and serves as Chair of the American Diabetes Association Legal Advocacy Subcommittee, as well as a member of the Association s Advocacy Committee and National Board of Directors. He is also a member of the College of The State Bar of Texas and the Texas Center for Legal Ethics. In May 2002, he was appointed to the Disability Issues Committee of the State Bar of Texas and will serve in that capacity through May He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas Employment Lawyers Association. A tenacious litigator, John has tried more than 50 cases to a jury and serves on the Pattern Jury Charges: Business, Consumer, Insurance, and Employment Committee in Texas and the Fifth Circuit Labor & Employment Law Pattern Jury Charge Advisory Committee. He lectures on employment law, dramshop litigation, and legal ethics. He is board certified in Civil Trial Law, Personal Injury Trial Law, and Consumer and Commercial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. John is a graduate of Austin College and The University of Missouri Law School. He serves as managing partner of Houston, Marek & Griffin, L.L.P., a law firm with offices in Victoria and Port Lavaca, Texas. Katie Hathaway has spent the past ten years working with the disability community in a legal, advocacy, and support capacity. Beginning her work as a respite provider and one-on-one aide for children with severe physical and mental disabilities, Katie focused on helping 2
3 families integrate their children into a variety of community programs and activities. In this work, Katie also assisted adults with disabilities perform daily activities, including full and part-time employment, and gain social and physical skills through an adapted aquatics program. More recently, she has concentrated on legal and advocacy work by helping to combat discrimination against persons with disabilities with a variety of governmental, civil rights, and advocacy organizations. Before joining the American Diabetes Association as its Legal Advocate, Katie worked for the American Bar Association Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law, the U.S. Department of Justice Disability Rights Section, the Disability Rights Project at the Washington Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights and Urban Affairs and the Epilepsy Foundation. Katie is a 2003 graduate of Catholic University law school. Crystal Jackson is Manager of Legal Advocacy at the American Diabetes Association's National Office in Alexandria, Virginia, and a parent of a child with diabetes. Crystal, a former litigation paralegal, is a long-time ADA volunteer and joined ADA s legal advocacy staff in 1999 after she successfully lobbied the Virginia General Assembly for the passage of school diabetes care legislation that has resulted in improved standards of care for students with diabetes. Advocating on behalf of her daughter, Crystal achieved a model OCR resolution agreement for the care of student's with diabetes in the Loudoun County (VA) School District. Crystal has contributed to many diabetes publications including the National Diabetes Education Program s school guide Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed: A Guide for School Personnel and is a frequent guest speaker at nationwide family diabetes conferences and camps. Crystal is a member the Virginia Diabetes Council. Paul Julien a Judicial Education Officer for the Arizona Supreme Court, trains judges and serves as a Judge Pro Tempore in courts throughout Arizona. Paul practiced law for 17 years, managed Southern Arizona Legal Aid, and consulted with the Legal Services Corporation. Prior to that, Paul taught in the public schools and at Northern Arizona University. Paul served in leadership roles with the state and local bar, local school board, Arizona Board of Regents, and Governor s Commission to Stop Domestic Violence. Paul is a member of the American Diabetes Association Legal Advocacy and served as its chair from In addition, he volunteered with a number of community organizations including the American Diabetes Association, Grand Canyon Association, Boy Scouts of America, and the Republican Party. Honors include the University of Arizona Distinguished Citizen Award, State Bar of Arizona Law-Related Education Award, and Broadway Southwest Father of the Year Award. Daniel B. Kohrman is a Senior Attorney with AARP Foundation Litigation, in Washington, DC, where he handles trial and appellate litigation involving disability and age discrimination in employment. Dan has filed amicus briefs in ADA and ADEA cases in the Second, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Ninth Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court and on state law disability issues in the Minnesota and Mississippi Supreme Courts. Dan has previously worked as: Supervising Attorney for National Litigation at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; a Trial Attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, 3
4 Civil Rights Division; Adjunct Professor of Law at George Washington University Law Center; and Counsel at Hogan & Hartson, LLP. He is currently is the Vice Chair of the American Diabetes Association s Legal Advocacy Subcommittee. Dan served as a law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey from He received a J.D. from Columbia University and an M.P.A. degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, the same year. He earned a B.A. from Yale College. L. Hunter Limbaugh is Southeastern Counsel for the Wine Institute. He received his B.A. and J.D. from Stetson University in 1979 and 1982, respectively. Hunter is a former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and was formerly Chief Legal Counsel to the Governor of South Carolina. He is Chair of the ADA's National Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee and is a member of the National Board of Directors. He served as the Vice Chair of the Association s Legal Advocacy Subcommittee from His daughter, Leah, has type 1 diabetes. Daniel Lorber, MD, FACP, CDE, is a practicing endocrinologist and Medical Director of the Diabetes Care and Information Center in Flushing, NY. He is a graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. After an Internal Medicine residency at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, he finished his subspecialty training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Currently, Daniel is a member of the Legal Advocacy Subcommittee, the Advocacy Committee, and the Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Director of Endocrinology at the New York Hospital of Queens in Flushing, NY. Daniel chaired the joint ADA/NCCHC (National Commission for Correctional Health Care) committee which updated diabetes care standards for prisons and jails. In addition, his experience in fire fighter employment cases led to his appointment as an ADA representative to joint committees with the National Fire Protection Agency and the Public Safety Committee of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine to develop employment guidelines for people with diabetes. Peggy R. Mastroianni is Associate Legal Counsel of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). She is responsible for developing Commission guidance under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Equal Pay Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); for providing legal advice and review for the Commission on a wide range of administrative matters; and for defending the Commission against suits brought in judicial and administrative forums by members of the public. Policy documents developed under Peggy s direction address National Origin Discrimination, Discrimination Based on Genetic Information; and the Application of EEO Laws to the Contingent Workforce. She also directed the development of ADA guidance on Reasonable Accommodation, Disability Related Inquiries and Medical Examinations, Workers Compensation, Psychiatric Conditions, and the meaning of the terms Disability and Qualified. Peggy has been a contributing author to Employment Discrimination Law (BNA 1996) and Sexual Harassment in Employment Law (BNA 1992). She has served on the Board of 4
5 Directors of the Women s Bar Association of the District of Columbia. Peggy graduated from Cornell University, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and the Fordham University Law School. In May, 2003, she was elected a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. Arlene B. Mayerson is the Directing Attorney of the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF), a national law and policy center dedicated to protecting and advancing the civil rights of individuals with disabilities. One of the nation s leading experts in disability rights law, Arlene has been involved in litigation and the development of public policy and legislation. She has written and spoken extensively on disability civil rights issues, and has been a key advisor to both Congress and the disability community on major disability rights legislation for the past two decades. In addition to direct representation, she provides consultation to counsel, and coordination of amicus briefs on key disability rights cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Arlene also has an adjunct faculty appointment at the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall). James A. Rapp is one of the United States' foremost authors in the area of law and education. His works include a seven-volume treatise, Education Law, published by the Lexis/Nexis (Matthew Bender & Co.), as well as numerous publications on subjects ranging from school crime and violence, record sharing, victims' litigation, medical malpractice, and tax law. Jim is a graduate of the University of Illinois and received his law degree from Washington University in St. Louis. A personal interest in education has made Jim a strong advocate of safe schools, effective discipline, agency cooperation, the critical role of parents in their children's education, and the rights of students with disabilities. Bridging the chasm between scholarly theory and real-world application, he is an attorney with a private general practice in the Midwest town of Quincy, Illinois. Jim serves on the American Diabetes Association Legal Advocacy Subcommittee and Safe at School Task Force. With Shereen Arent, Brian Dimmick, and Crystal Jackson of the ADA, Jim prepared Legal Rights of Students with Diabetes. Benita Sakin is the Director of Government Affairs for the NYU Child Study Center at the New York University School of Medicine. Benita has previously been an attorney at the Federal Trade Commission, the Quaker Oats Company, and the American Diabetes Association, where she currently serves as a member of the Legal Advocacy Subcommittee. The Association has awarded her an Outstanding Service Award. Benita is an active volunteer with the All Souls Soup Kitchen in addition to being on the Board of Visitors of Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. She received a B.A. from the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University and a J.D. from the Northwestern Law School, where she was Order of the Coif. In 2000, she received a M.S. from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University. Linda Siminerio, CDE, RN, PhD, has led a career devoted to diabetes research and education for more than 30 years. She is currently the Director of the Diabetes Institute at the University of Pittsburgh and serves on the faculty at the University s School of Medicine and Nursing. 5
6 An active volunteer and leader with the American Diabetes Association (ADA), Linda previously served as the national President of Health Care and Education. She s been on numerous ADA committees, as well as the national board of directors. She is a member of the Association s Legal Advocacy Subcommittee. Internationally, Linda continues to help lead the effort to include diabetes education, nutrition and psychosocial issues in all forms and discussions on diabetes care. Linda is the Senior Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation, and is the only American and the first diabetes educator to serve in that capacity. She has served as an investigator on numerous diabetes research studies, co-authored many diabetes publications, and has served as the editor of the journal Diabetes Spectrum, associate editor of Diabetes Care, and the first non-physician editor of the consumer magazine Diabetes Forecast. In addition, she is the co-author of the ADA books Raising a Child with Diabetes and Diabetes Education Goals. Janel Wright is an Administrative Law Judge with the State of Alaska s Department of Labor. She served as the Legal Director for the Disability Law Center of Alaska, Alaska s Protection and Advocacy agency. Prior to appointment as the Legal Director, she served as a Staff Attorney. The emphasis of her practice was representing children who were denied a Free and Appropriate Public Education and individuals with disabilities whose rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504, and Alaska anti-discrimination statutes had been violated. Previous to working for the Disability Law Center, Janel was a civil rights attorney with the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission. She is a graduate from the Ohio State University College of Law. Janel has had type 1 diabetes for 30 years and is an active volunteer for the American Diabetes Association in Alaska, serves on the National Board, the Advocacy Committee, and the Legal Advocacy Subcommittee. Alan L. Yatvin is a partner in the Philadelphia law firm of Popper & Yatvin, where he has a trial and appellate practice in the areas of criminal defense and police misconduct civil rights. Following his graduation from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City, Alan served as an Assistant Philadelphia Defender and Assistant Federal Defender before entering private practice. Alan has tried cases ranging from death penalty homicides to complex municipal liability police misconduct cases. He has also briefed and/or argued appellate matters before a variety of courts, including the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Alan serves as Chair of the Appointed Counsel Screening Committee for the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania. He is a frequent lecturer on police misconduct litigation. In March of 1999, Alan was named one of Philadelphia s Best Lawyers by Philadelphia Magazine and was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer in 2004 and He is a member of the American Diabetes Association s Legal Advocacy Subcommittee. 6
