1 MGMA Academic Practice Compensation and Production Survey for Faculty and Management: 2014 Report Based on 2013 Data % Key Findings Summary Report
2 MGMA Academic Practice Compensation and Production Survey for Faculty and Management: 2014 Report Based on 2013 Data Each year, MGMA surveys its members and nonmembers to obtain the most recent academic practice compensation and production data. This year s survey remains a significant benchmarking tool for academic practices, representing 616 groups, 20,876 providers, and 1,996 managers. The Data Solutions analysts reached the following results and conclusions by historical and current-year trend analyses. These report highlights provide a description on how compensation may change throughout time, as well as factors that influence current compensation. The median is used in the analysis, and the report reflects data submitted for the 2013 fiscal year. Specialty and Physicians Report Inverse Effect of Billable Clinical Responsibility on Total Compensation While physicians report a 4% decrease in total compensation when billable clinical activity encompasses more than two-thirds of their time (compared to a third or less), physicians report an extreme opposite: 29% higher total compensation when the majority of their time is spent in billable clinical activity ($282,474 vs. $219,500). Physician Assistants Report Opposite Geographic Compensation Trends Compared to Primary and Physicians Primary and physicians report highest total compensation in the eastern geographic section ($185,641 and $285,000) and lowest in the southern geographic section ($170,500 and $251,035). In this same year, Physician Assistants report the opposite trend: lowest median total compensation in the eastern section and second highest compensation in the south. Chief Department Administrators (CDAs) Report Peak Total Compensation in Second Largest Department Size CDAs report a steady increase in total compensation as department size rises. Compensation peaks at departments with 76 to 150 total faculty with a value of $163,858. This amount is 48% higher than CDAs in departments of 10 or fewer faculty, and 21% higher than their counterparts in departments with 151 or more total faculty. Key Findings physicians report a 52% higher median total compensation than their counterparts physician compensation decreases as billable clinical responsibilities increase, while sees an increase for higher levels of billable clinical activity Highest median total compensation reported in the eastern geographic section for both Primary and Specialty Care physicians Department Chairs in report a 70% higher median total compensation ($530,668) compared to Department Chairs ($312,700) Surgical departments report 1.41 more Total FTE support staff per FTE physician than Nonsurgical departments Nurse Practitioners report a 14% increase in compensation since 2012 ($98,546 vs. $86,218) Managers report an overall flat change in total compensation (compared to 2012), with the largest increase for Associate/ Assistant Department Administrators (4%) MGMA.
