7 THE GOIZUETA EXPERIENCE THE LEGACY OF ROBERTO C. GOIZUETA Goizueta Business School is honored to take its name from Roberto C. Goizueta. Mr. Goizueta, an innovative and influential business leader, served as chairman and chief executive off icer of The Coca-Cola Company from 1981 until his death in Hailed by The Wall Street Journal as one of the most highly regarded CEOs in America, Mr. Goizueta worked hard to demonstrate a level of personal and professional courage throughout his lifetime. This commitment has made him one of the most respected business leaders of the 20th century. Roberto C. Goizueta was born in Havana in He moved to the United States where he taught himself English by going to the movies at night and studying at a Connecticut prep school. In 1953, he graduated from Yale University with a degree in chemical engineering. Back in Cuba, Mr. Goizueta accepted a job with the Havana subsidiary of The Coca-Cola Company. Eventually in 1961, the Goizueta family left Cuba with a suitcase, $40 in cash, and a dream. Mr. Goizueta s vision serves as the inspiration and momentum behind Goizueta Business School s mission: to develop Principled Leaders for Global Enterprise who can create value for their companies and for the world. Not only was he a great leader for the employees and shareholders of The Coca-Cola Company, but he also was very committed to improving business in general. His challenge for us at Goizueta is to not teach business the way it is, but the way it will be. GOIZUETA LEGACY THE GOIZUETA FOUNDATION In 1992, Roberto C. Goizueta established The Goizueta Foundation to provide financial assistance to educational and charitable institutions that empower individuals and families through educational opportunities to improve the quality of their lives. The Foundation s commitment to the continued growth of Goizueta Business School culminated in a $35 million building addition, dedicated in September Today, Mrs. Olga C. de Goizueta carries on her husband s legacy by serving on the Emory Board of Trustees. 16 INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM The ability to operate in a global environment is critical to success, and there is no substitute for real-time international exposure. The International Colloquium, a capstone feature of Goizueta s EMBA, is an international module that exposes you to the complexities, opportunities and challenges of the current business climate. The colloquium is a one-week business immersion module held in international cities selected by the students. Most recently, WEMBA students visited Shanghai and Hong Kong; MEMBA students traveled to Santiago and Buenos Aires. 17 ABOUT EMBA MAKING THE GRADE Cooperative Grading System The following five-tiered grading system is used in all of Goizueta s MBA programs: Distinction (DS) High Performance (HP) Performance Standard (PS) Low Performance (LP) No Credit (NC) There is no established basis for translating descriptive grade terms to conventional letter grades or quality point averages. However, because outside parties may need to do so for comparison purposes, a Goizueta PS grade represents the expected performance standard equivalent of a B. The Team Structure The modern business world consists of diverse talents working together so does Goizueta s Executive MBA. As a student in the EMBA program, you will be nested in a team comprised of five to six students who are carefully chosen for their particular strengths, backgrounds and training. Teams will change at set times during the program and are formed to maximize learning, and guarantee maximum exposure and benefits from the opinions and expertise of one s peers. The team format provides exposure to people with diverse backgrounds and working styles, which allows you to develop a strong network and an essential balance of work, life and study, with a built-in support system. I started the program 48 hours after our second child was born. Everyone was extremely supportive and understanding and worked to make the start of the program as seamless as possible. I had a new extended family looking out for me and my family. And, due to the length of the program, I will be finished before my son is even 18 months old! 21 ABOUT EMBA Academic Spotlight The EMBA leader development program, co-instructed by Professors Rick Gilkey and Peter Topping, guides students through comparative analyses of organizational culture and design, team structure and performance, and the factors supporting or detracting from successful individual leadership. We are focused on creating a classroom environment that provides a context to foster learning leadership through engagement in personal development, explains Professor Gilkey. We, therefore, spend a good deal of time focusing on how students will use what they have learned when they re-enter their jobs and companies. Participants attend eight week-long (Sunday-Saturday) learning modules in Atlanta, along with a one-week International Colloquium. As a finance professor who previously worked as a Wall Street investment banker, Professor J.B. Kurish knows the importance of bringing real-world application into the classroom. Professor Kurish was instrumental in providing opportunities for students to learn directly from Duff & Phelps, a leading provider of financial advisory and investment banking services, about the actual day-to-day valuation work that the company performs. Professor Kurish, along with the Finance Club, arranged for Aaron Gilcreast, Managing Director of the Atlanta office of Duff & Phelps and a Goizueta MBA alumnus, and others from the company to deliver a special seminar on market comparable valuation methods. This was an excellent way to see how some of the theory students were studying in class was used in practice. One of the most beneficial experiences for students was a case based upon a recent real-world acquisition created by Gilcreast and Syed Ally, also a Goizueta MBA alumnus. This case allowed students to have the experience of working through a valuation assignment. Professor Kurish sums up the benefits of bringing real-world application in the classroom, Aaron and I, standing together for two class sessions and one due diligence meeting, created a class capstone experience that certainly illustrated the relevance of the core course material to the real world. 34
