3 December 7th, 1941 A Date Which Will Live in Infamy FDR Asks for a Declaration of War. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, stunned virtually everyone in the United States military. Japan s carrier-launched bombers found Pearl Harbor totally unprepared. President Franklin Roosevelt quickly addressed Congress to ask for a declaration of war as illustrated in this audio excerpt. Although he never mentioned Europe or the fact that Germany had not yet declared war on the United States, the Pearl Harbor attack allowed him to begin the larger intervention in the European war he had long wanted. 4 Pearl Harbor The 7 December 1941 Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor was one of the great defining moments in history. A single carefully-planned and wellexecuted stroke removed the United States Navy s battleship force as a possible threat to the Japanese Empire s southward expansion. America, unprepared and now considerably weakened, was abruptly brought into the Second World War as a full combatant. Eighteen months earlier, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had transferred the United States Fleet to Pearl Harbor as a presumed deterrent to Japanese agression. The Japanese military, deeply engaged in the seemingly endless war it had started against China in mid-1937, badly needed oil and other raw materials. Commercial access to these was gradually curtailed as the conquests continued. In July 1941 the Western powers effectively halted trade with Japan. From then on, as the desperate Japanese schemed to seize the oil and mineral-rich East Indies and Southeast Asia, a Pacific war was virtually inevitable. By late November 1941, with peace negotiations clearly approaching an end, informed U.S. officials (and they were well-informed, they believed, through an ability to read Japan s diplomatic codes) fully expected a Japanese attack into the Indies, Malaya and probably the Philippines. Completely unanticipated was the pros- pect that Japan would at- tack east, as well. The U.S. Fleet s Pearl Harbor base was reachable by an air- craft car- rier force, and the Japanese Navy secretly sent one across the Pacific with greater aerial striking power than had ever been seen on the World s oceans. Its planes hit just before 8AM on 7 December. Within a short time five of eight battleships at Pearl Harbor were sunk or sinking, with the rest damaged. Several other ships and most Hawaii-based combat planes were also knocked out and over 2400 Americans were dead. Soon after, Japanese planes eliminated much of the American air force in the Philippines, and a Japanese Army was ashore in Malaya. These great Japanese successes, achieved without prior diplomatic formalities, shocked and enraged the PEARL HARBOR, cont d. on Page 9 ENTERTAINMENT ENTERTAINMENT HonoR THeiR LeGaCy, SaLuTe THeiR SaCRifiCe Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony December 7, a.m. USS Midway Museum A free event honoring the Greatest Generation Remembrances Two-Bell Ceremony Remembrance Wreath Presentation Gun Salute by the California (courtesy of the Maritime Museum of San Diego) Free museum admission following the ceremony. 5 Japanese PRISONER OF WAR Although statistics never tell the whole story, this one goes a long way in describing what life was like for POWs in the Philippines: two out of every three soldiers alive at the time of the surrender did not live to see the end of the war. Although it s impossible to find exact figures, roughly half of the 24,000 Americans and nearly threequarters of the 64,000 Filipino troops died during the Japanese occupation. Most of them died while POWs in one of the many wretched prison camps spread throughout the Philippines and in labor camps in Japan. What was life like at the camp? Richard Gordon: The camp [Camp O Donnell, on Luzon] had two water lines for, in our case, 9300 men. Water ADOPTIONS Attention Super Moms! Help create a family...become a super surrogate! So, many men went without water. Water was brought in from a creek nearby for cooking purposes. But the water itself in the camp, you were desperate for. You couldn t get it. You had some people would crash the line and fill up cans for their friends and...for the patients in the hospital. And so those who just followed the order and lined up for the water, sometimes just didn t get any water, period. For days. Water was a scarce commodity in O Donnell. Why didn t the Japanese treat you better? Gordon: Why didn t they treat us better? I wish I could answer for the Japanese. I think they were totally unprepared for what they had to handle... Their outlook of a prisoner of war was that they held you in nothing but contempt. If you surrendered, you were dishonorable. So if you were dishonorable, why should we worry about you or take care of you? You don t deserve anything better than what we re giving you. And so the Japanese philosophy, we were never prisoners of war initially. We were captives. A big, fine distinction they drew there. 6 CAMPS Cont d. from Page 5 a captive of the Japanese army. They could do with you what they want. They didn t have to abide by any rules because there were no rules. There is a common misconception regarding the experiences of two different groups of American POWs. As described above, those captured with the bulk of the Luzon Force on Bataan already in terrible condition after the long siege were then subjected to the aptly named Death March, which ended at Camp O Donnell. In early June, most of them were then transferred to the camp at Cabanatuan, where they were joined by the men from Corregidor, which had surrendered on May 7. Although hardly in great shape themselves, the men from Corregidor had enjoyed better rations and avoided the Death March, putting them in a better position to withstand the rigors of the camps. The relative HEALTH Prevention is the future! CORONADO PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY Howard R. Dixon, DDS MS, Inc. Diplomate American Board of Pediatric Dentistry 540 Orange Avenue, Coronado, CA Coronado s Premier Pediatric Dental Practice survival rates of the two groups bear this out. Richard Gordon: I was left behind at O Donnell when they moved them, the main body of prisoners from there, on the 6th of June 1942, to another camp called Cabanatuan. And I was left behind on the burial detail. To bury those sick, those expected to die they knew wouldn t live. And in about a month s time, our job was finished up. And then on the 5th of July of 1942, I was taken to Cabanatuan as well. And that s when we would run into Corregidor prisoners for the very first time. This belief that s been sworn by some historians that Corregidor made the [Death] March [is] of course totally inaccurate. That s where I first met with Corregidor people. And they were in pretty good shape. They were not diseased when they were captured, they hadn t suffered the March, they hadn t suffered the starvation that Bataan had. So they were pretty good, health- wise, good condition in that regard. And that s where we met them, as I say. Were the prison guards generally pretty good or were they awful? Gordon: There are many, many stories could be told about the guards in both those camps, of being brutal and mistreating. If a prisoner escaped I can recall the second camp, Cabanatuan, uh, I thought it was a Filipino. It was an American Indian. They beheaded the individual. They put his head on a pole and they walked up and down the main road in the camp so we could all see what happened to an escaped prisoner. If you escaped in Cabanatuan, they took out nine men from your squad and shot all nine of them. And they did that. So as a result, we had people agreeing not to escape because it would mean the lives of other people. We had squads made up of ten people and I ve got well, I remember people signing certificates they would not escape. And if they did, they d be subject to court martial after the war. Because the Japanese would shoot the other nine. So your responsibility as a soldier to escape was cut HEALTH off in a hurry unless you wanted to take the lives of somebody else with you. What was life like in the prisoner of war camp? Alfred X. Burgos: Well, like I said, it was awful because when we were placed there together first with the Americans, there was no food provided for any of us there. 7 Filipino resistance against Japanese Over 30 Years experience During the Japanese occupation in World War II, there was an extensive Philippine resistance movement, which opposed the Japanese with active underground and guerrilla activity that increased over the years. Fighting the guerrillas were a Japanese-formed Bureau of Constabulary (later taking the name of the old Philippine Constabulary during the Second Republic), Kempeitai, and the Makapili. Postwar studies revealed that around 260,000 persons were organized under guerrilla groups and that members of anti-japanese underground organizations were more numerous. Such was their effectiveness that by the end of World War II, Japan controlled only twelve of the forty-eight provinces. Also by the end of the war, some 277 separate guerrilla units made up of some 260,715 individuals fought in the resistance movement. Select units of the resistance would go on to be reorganized and equipped as units of the Philippine Army and Constabulary. 9 PEARL HARBOR Cont d. from Page 4 previously divided American people into a level of purposeful unity hardly seen before or since. For the next five months, until the Battle of the Coral Sea in early May, Japan s far-reaching offensives proceeded untroubled by fruitful opposition. American and Allied morale suffered accordingly. Under normal political circumstances, an accomodation might have been considered. However, the memory of the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor fueled a determination to fight on. Once the Battle of Midway in early June 1942 had eliminated much of Japan s striking power, that same memory stoked a relentless war to reverse her conquests and remove her, and her German and Italian allies, as future threats to World peace. 11 Human trafficking is modern-day slavery We shake our heads in disbelief that human trafficking is happening right here in Southern California. Some blame the victims because they don t want to believe that such a cruel business thrives in our communities. And yes, I mean a business. Human trafficking generates 9.5 billion annually in the U.S. It now surpasses drug dealing. Some gang leaders are switching gears from drug dealer to human trafficker because it is so lucrative. The U.S. Dept. of Justice estimates that up to 300,000 girls from the U.S. are involved in prostitution. San Diego is one of several cities in the U.S. that are major hubs for human trafficking. Other cities that are major hubs include San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Atlanta, Tampa, Nashville, Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago, Toledo and Washington D.C. Girls 12 to 14 years of age are targeted; the ones who have emotional holes in their hearts seeking love and acceptance, and in some cases, a better life. Enticed by a supposed loving man who promises to take care of them, the relationship begins. During the grooming phase the girl receives gifts of nice clothing, meals, etc. Once the girl falls in love with her pimp, the tables turn and the girl quickly learns what she must do and that she cannot leave without serious consequences. The prevalence and anonymity of the Internet has fueled the rapid growth of sex trafficking making the trade of women and children easier than ever before. Girls (and some boys too) who have become victims of these predators are around us but escape our attention. 12 FOCUS ON... Family closeness: family crests A great FOCUS activity to encourage family closeness during this special holiday season! By Tracie Smith As a child, I always loved the holidays because it was a time for family members to participate in time-honored traditions and create new ones too. I love that feeling of gathering together to share stories or participate in a fun family activity. The Family Crest described below is one of my favorite activities to share with the families I work with here at FOCUS. If your family is looking for something fun and creative to help bring you closer together during this holiday season, or any time, then this is the perfect project for you! Centuries ago, family crests or coat of arms were used much like a company logo to identify different royal families in countries all over the world. As time went on, every family, not just royal families, began to use crests to mark their property and distinguish themselves from others. Using unique symbols and colors, crests are still used today by many colleges and universities as well as our armed forces. Creating a family crest at home can be a fun and meaningful way for family members to identify what makes their family unique. Often times, a shield is used as the base layer for the other EDUCATION symbols to be placed on, but you can use any shape (circle, triangle, square, etc.) as a FOCUS: Strengthening the Home Base foundation. Depending on children s ages, this activity can range from very basic to elaborate. However elaborate you choose to make it, this activity promotes teamwork, sharing, and communication, to help draw your family closer together. How to make a family crest: Here are some questions to help you get started thinking about the design of your family crest: What makes your family different from other families? What is your favorite part of being in your family? What makes your family strong? Will the colors you use have meaning? How will you lay out the symbols? What shape will you use as a foundation? What does your family value? Once you have thought through some of these questions, here s how to create a family crest: First, use a pencil to draw a shield onto heavy stock paper. If you want to use a different shape you can use a large mixing bowl as a template to create a circle or trace around a picture frame or box to create a square. Next, discuss ideas for which symbols each family member wants to create. Each member will have the opportunity to choose a different symbol to represent what they think makes their family unique. For example, if there are 5 members in your family, there will be 5 symbols in your crest. Use the rest of the card stock paper to make each family member s symbol. Finally, color each symbol with markers or crayons, cut out the colored symbols, and glue them down on the shield using a glue stick. Special considerations: Young children should be included in the process even if they don t really understand the idea of symbols. Ask them what their favorite thing about their family is; they may decide that getting hugs is their favorite part of being in the family. If so, you could draw a heart or even a teddy bear as their symbol and let them color it. Using magazine cutouts is also an option for younger children. Make sure to work as a team to decide how the symbols will be laid out on the shield. Deployed parents can participate in this family activity from afar. A portion of phone conversations, s, or video chats can be dedicated to the family crest project. The service member can draw or explain what symbol would represent what is most important to him/her about the family and how it will be added to the crest. Older children and the non-deployed parent can keep the service member up to date on the project with pictures. Get creative! Once you have finished creating your crest there are lots of things you can do with it: Make your family crest into a stamp and create stationary for your service member! Create a special sign with your FOCUS, cont d. on Page 21 YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS JUST GOT STATIONED NEARBY. UMUC at San Diego. Now open. We could see 2,000,000 unemployed 9/11 U.S. veterans in 2014! There are just as many non-9/11 veterans that are unemployed. There are twice as many U.S. veterans who are underemployed and cannot pay all of their bills each month. They are sinking deeper into poverty and debt each day! The U.S. government tax credits for companies that hire U.S. veterans is expiring at end of this year. U.S. corporations have been hiring all of the veterans that they can. They are to be lauded! You Americans An American soldier, serving in World War II, had just returned from several weeks of intense action on the German front lines. He had finally been granted R&R and was on a train bound for London. The train was very crowded, so the soldier walked the length of the train, looking for an empty seat. The only unoccupied seat was directly adjacent to a well-dressed middle-aged lady and was being used by her little dog. The war weary soldier asked, Please, ma am, may I sit in that seat? The English woman looked down her nose at the soldier, sniffed and said, You Americans. You are such a rude class of people. Can t you see my little Fifi is using that seat? The soldier walked away, determined to find a place to rest, but after another trip down to the end of the train, found himself again facing the woman with the dog. Again he asked, Please, lady. May I sit there? I m very tired. The English woman wrinkled her nose and snorted, You Americans! Not only are you rude, you are also arrogant. Imagine! The soldier didn t say anything else; he leaned over, picked up the little dog, tossed it out the window of the train and sat down in the empty seat. The woman shrieked and railed, and demanded that someone defend her and chastise the soldier. An English gentleman sitting across the aisle spoke up, You know, sir, you Americans do seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You eat holding the fork in the wrong hand. You drive your cars on the wrong side of the road. And now, sir, you ve thrown the wrong b---ch out the window. Glad to be drunk A completely inebriated man was stumbling down the street with one foot on the curb and one foot in the gutter. A cop pulled up and said, I ve got to take you in, pal. You re obviously drunk. Our wasted friend asked, Officer, are ya absolutely sure I m drunk? Yeah, buddy, I m sure, said the copper. Let s go. Breathing a sigh of relief, the wino said, Thank goodness, I thought I was crippled. 0 to 200 in 6 seconds Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really pissed. She told him Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!! The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. 15 Billing A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party. Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you re out of the office? I give it to them, replied the lawyer, and then I send them a bill. The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer. Girls night out Two women friends had gone out for a Girls Night Out, and had been decidedly over-enthusiastic on the cocktails. Incredibly drunk and walking home they suddenly realized they both needed to pee. They were very near a graveyard and one of them suggested they do their business behind a headstone or something. The first woman had nothing to wipe with so she took off her panties, used them and threw them away. Her friend however was wearing an expensive underwear set and didn t want to ruin hers, but was lucky enough to salvage a large ribbon from a wreath that was on a grave and proceeded to MOTORCYCLES wipe herself with it. After finishing, they made their way home. The next day the first woman s husband phones the other husband and said, These damn girls nights out have got to stop. My wife came home last night without her panties. That s nothing, said the other. Mine came back with a sympathy card stuck between the cheeks of her butt that said, From all of us at the Fire Station, Well never forget you! Impossible to Please A group of girlfriends is on vacation when they see a 5-story hotel with a sign that reads: For Women Only. Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in. The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It s easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what s inside. So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: All the men on this floor are short and plain. The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor. The sign on the second floor reads: All the men here are short and handsome. Still, this isn t good enough, so the friends continue on up. They reach the third floor and the sign reads: All the men here are tall and plain. The bride tells her husband The bride tells her husband, Honey, you know I m a virgin and I don t know anything about sex. Can you explain it to me first? OK, Sweetheart. Putting it simply, we will call your private place the prison and call my private thing the prisoner. So what we do is: put the prisoner in the prison. And then they made love for the first time. Afterwards, the guy is lying face up on the bed, smiling with satisfaction. Nudging him, his bride giggles, Honey the prisoner seems to have escaped. GOLF Military Special Turning on his side, he smiles. Then we will have to re-imprison him. After the second time they spent, the guy reaches for his cigarettes but the girl, thoroughly enjoying the new experience of making love, gives him a suggestive smile, Honey, the prisoner is out again! The man rises to the occasion, but with the unsteady legs of a recently born foal. Afterwards, he lays back on the bed, totally exhausted. She nudges him and says, Honey, the prisoner escaped again. Limply turning his head, He YELLS at her, Hey, its not a life sentence, OKAY! Weekdays before noon after noon Weekends before noon after noon For questions, ask us at the ProShop. Must present Ad. (Exclaim), a new generation model that Kia stresses is totally transformed, more fun to drive and offers more advanced technology. After a week of driving, the improvements are indeed noteworthy. Starting at just 14,700 for the base Soul, pricing moves up the ladder to the Plus (+) at 18,200 and then the top line Exclaim (!) at 20,300. Our Exclaim tester is an amenity rich version which came with a 2,600 Sun & Sound Package and a 2,500 The Whole Shabang option. When you add the 795 delivery, the final price of 26,195 pushes Soul right out of the Price Ballgame, especially if return on investment is on the potential buyer s list. Specifically, for 26,195 there are better deals around for a fun vehicle. However, Souls priced at 15,495 and 18,995 delivered are certainly good buys and more than roadworthy. Additionally, Soul competes in a class that has been decimated, as Nissan Cube still struggles for acceptance, Honda Element is no longer available and Scion XB may be on its last legs in the box car brand segment. Bottom line? Kia Soul survives and now thrives, with expected sales of 120,000 units for the new generation. This is a great number compared to some of the other box cars or small PET SUPPLIES every day at all Kahoots locations with Active Military ID! Likes: New design, interior, 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. Dislikes: Rear camera not available on base model, noisy ride, no 4xr available. Entry Price: 14,700 Price as Tested: 26,195 subcompacts, like Chevy Spark/Sonic, Smart Car or Fiat 500. The new Soul s exterior is similar to 13, although upgrades include new rear taillights, larger fenders are some sculpture upgrades to the fascia and side areas. Overall, Soul s exterior stays pretty much the same. Inside and underneath, however, designers went to work on the new Soul. The cabin is upgraded in a major way, and offers a new instrument panel, more high tech steering wheel controls, enhanced seating, more amenities and a longer overall length thanks to a wheelbase stretch of 0.8 inches. The latter allows Soul to utilize the same platform as Kia Rio 5-door, another popular compact from Kia. The top line Exclaim comes with 18- inch tires on beautiful alloys, improving ride, handling and comfort. Engineers also added some much needed sound insulation, although all Souls are still prone to road and engine noise. The ride is firm, but acceptable and handling is good for a small car. Power comes from a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder on Plus and Exclaim versions, producing 164 horses and 151 lb. of torque. The new Soul is indeed an improved fun car. 18 CHARGERS REPORT By Art Garcia Jr. In part two of his interview taken during their bye week, Charges GM Tom Telesco discusses his early career as a scout, his activities as a general manager and his thoughts the day before running his first NFL Draft. AG: You have been on the job as a first year general manager for about nine months now, is it all what you expected or have you experienced something you maybe didn t expect to encounter? TT: You don t really have time to sit back and reflect on what you re doing or what s happening, you really don t because things just move and you have SPORTING GOODS Del Mar Fairgrounds Dec 14 th & 15 th, 2013 BUY / SELL / TRADE I-5 to Via Del La Valle Exit Del Mar, CA Clip this ad for a 1.00 Discount Limit, One per Adult ALL SALES CONDUCTED IN COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE LAWS Interview with General Manager Tom Telesco to keep up. So I haven t really reflected back on what s been hard, what s been easy, what s been different I haven t really even given it much thought. There are a lot of things that go into the job I ve been lucky enough that I ve been raised in this business from the very bottom to here, so I ve seen all the levels of what goes on and I think that probably helps with my position now. AG: While you were in college you interned with the Buffalo Bills, was it your dream to eventually become a GM in the NFL someday? TT: No, never. My dream at that time was to just get a job I wanted to work PART TWO in football whether it was in coaching or scouting. In every job I ve had I ve just tried to do that job the best I could, I never really had the dream about becoming a general manager, I really didn t. I was always, this is the job they gave me and (now) I ve got to prove to them that I can do it. This is sports, professional sports and it s very competitive and if you can t do the work you won t be there very long. So whatever job I had, whether it be scouting assistant, college scout, pro scout or director of pro scouting whatever it was, I was really concerned with I have to do this the best I can to show them I can do it. AG: What is a typical day for you as a GM; are you watching film on college players, going over game film, monitoring the waiver wire, watching practice? TT: Football is great because it s very regimented and on a schedule which I like. So Monday through Sunday there is different things to do every day, but at some point during each day I m watching tape of something whether it s our game, our practice, an opponent we re going to play or a college tape of prospects for next year I m watching a tape of something every day. AG: Take me through the night before the NFL Draft it s your first draft as a GM, were you anxious, excited, confident, nervous did you have the butterflies in your gut? TT: It seems like such a long time ago. I knew, I felt really good because I thought we were very well prepared so that took some nervous off if you felt like you were prepared which we were. The staff did a great job, the scouts, John Spanos everybody did a great job of being prepared because you try and cover every angle and turn over every rock. So I felt that as we were going in we were prepared to get it done. AG: So you re sitting there in the second round and decide to trade up to draft Notre Dame s Manti Te o, what did you see in him to make you decide to pull the trigger and make the deal? TT: You know I guess it s just you do all your work, do all of your preparation and you try to acquire as many CHARGERS, cont d. on Page December 1, 2013 THE MILITARY PRESS

19 MMA REPORT Rousey vs. Tate - Grudge match at UFC 168 By Art Garcia Jr. On December 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, UFC 168 will feature one of the most highly anticipated rematches in MMA history and I m not talking the headliner Weidman vs Silva II. Spurned by their public dislike for each other, when former Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion Miesha Cupcake Tate and current UFC Bantamweight Champion Rowdy Ronda Rousey enter the cage as the co-main event that evening, UFC 168 could very well set Pay per View records for this highly-touted card. Having lost her Strikeforce crown to Rousey via armbar in 2012, Tate (13-4) is a heavy underdog to dethrone Rousey (7-0), whose victories have all ended in the first round. With the fight just one month away, MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. caught up with Tate for a quick pre-fight interview. AG: Well it s down to 33 days and counting before your big rematch with Ronda, how are you feeling? MT: To be honest, I m going through one of the nastiest grind periods (in SPORTING GOODS HOUSING training) I know I m doing what it takes, but it s the not fun part of training camp that s for sure. The food part (with the holidays) is not too bad; it s just more the grind of training and your body just feeling it takes a beating and it s really hard on you. But that s to be expected, it s not my first rodeo, I just tough it through. AG: Are you training any different for this fight than in your first meeting? MT: Stylistically, maybe a little bit but as far as the training twice a day and once on Saturday is the same. It s the same concept just adding different things that are important for me to win this fight as far as technique goes. AG: Do you go into this fight with the same strategy as the first fight or are you going to change it up a bit? MT: Well the first fight I kind of abandoned my strategy anyways so I was more emotional I m really just practicing keeping my cool. So I would like to keep the fight on my feet as much as possible, I don t think that s a big secret to anybody, but I d like to punch her and I d like to punch her a lot and see where it goes. AG: That s the big question surrounding Ronda, how will she react if someone can actually catch her with some heavy punches and punish her a little? MT: Exactly, everyone wants to know the answer to that question and I d love to be the one to test it out. AG: Going back to your first fight where you said you were too emotional, did that cause you to get out of your comfort zone during the fight? MT: I just got out of my element. I didn t follow my game plan as well as I could have and I believe even though, given the circumstances I thought I did well. I thought it was a competitive fight I was still the first person to ever make Ronda go backwards; I escaped one of her arm bars and I m the first person to ever do that as well. So I think if I can just harness my energy a little bit better I believe I have the skill set to beat her I put her on her back at one point and we had some good exchanges on the ground. I definitely have the edge on my feet, so up until (she caught me with) the armbar I think it was a very competitive fight. AG: With that being said, I would think you enter this bout wanting to fight your fight rather than worrying about her arm bar correct? MT: Yeah, everybody knows about her arm bar and everybody knows that s her go-to move, but I can t beat the champion just by defending her armbar for five rounds that doesn t win fights because it s a defensive move. So I have to be aware of the armbar, but I can t fear it so much that I m not trying to lose the whole time; I have to go out there and try to win. 20 CAMPS Cont d. from Page 6 from civilians, who had smuggled it in, but after a while they got very tough with civilians who were trying to smuggle food to the prisoners of war, and many of them found themselves killed by trying to provide food. Then, after a while, the Japanese allowed the prisoners of war to go to the town to get HOUSING food, which they confiscated from the civilians for the camp. And in my case, for example, when I got into the camp itself, I was fortunate enough to have known some friends before who were cooks, and they were assigned in the kitchens of the concentration camp. Well, I happened to be lucky to have been placed in one of the kitchens, and in fact, I was the one in charge of the guava detail, which were given the task of going to the town in Capas Tarlac to look for food for the prisoners of war... If you re caught trying to escape, then you re a dead man. Like, for example, one of the places where people would try to escape is, they had burial detail every day, where dead prisoners were picked up by a burial detail and taken to a place in the concentration camp for the burial. And many of them, while they went there, at a certain time they had to stop because they had to come back the next day, there were no burials at night. But many of them tried to go that way and see if they could skip out among those who are burying so that at night they could escape. But, unfortunately, many of them didn t make it. Gustavo Ingles: Well, our ration [was] given on the cover of the meat can, so if you put rice there and then you use a piece of wood to keep it flat, that was our ration... So, you can find worms together with the boiled rice. At first we were throwing that away until one of the American prisoners found out that we were throwing it away. He said, Give it to us because we need it. At first we didn t mind, and he told us that, We can t understand it, why you re throwing it away, that is protein. So, I told him, Now that we know, we won t give it to you any more... It was no more about the chemistry, about what to eat, which we didn t understand by that time. What we understand is only what entered the mouth, that s it s purely rice. Sometimes they put salt so that it would taste different. CHARGERS Cont d. from Page 18 talented players you can that you think fit your system. He s a player that we really liked and we thought he could help our team at some certain points you feel like you have to go get somebody and that s what we had to do. AG: Despite not having a lot of household names, these guys seem to be playing better as a team where a lot of times that overcomes a more talented team who play as individuals, yes? TT: Yes, they believe in each other which is great because the big thing is that everyone has to do their own job more so then everyone (thinking) hey I have to be the one to make a play. If everyone does their own job and plays their role things will work out. AG: King Dunlap has been a great story so far this season, with all the criticism of his play with the Eagles, what did you see in him to go ahead and sign him? TT: We only go off of what we watch on tape and we don t go off on what you hear or what people may say. King has done a very good job King is 6 9 with long arms and he s a very good athlete and he s smart. Those guys are hard to find and he s come in here and played well. The Endzone When asked what the toughest part of his job is as a general manager, Telesco replied: The toughest part is winning games it s hard to win games in this league, it really is. The nice thing here is we have a great coaching staff and the front office and scouting staff are really working well together which makes the management part of it work smoothly. MT: Well it was comical because it The VA loan program is a flexible solution designed to make homeownership more affordable for you. Where the Primary focus is you. Chris Wiley Branch Manager NMLS #: (800) Arnold Way Alpine, CA Years of VA Experience didn t work and it ended up backfiring on her and it pissed her off so it became funny. Before, I got sucked into the game and I didn t win I was definitely on the losing end of that so I decided not to play that anymore and decided to play by my own rules and that didn t seem to make her very happy. So that s okay with me. AG: Do you have a prediction for the fight? MT: I just want to knock her out I ve knocked a girl out before but I would love to knock Ronda out and that s the victory I envision. So I m going to punch her hard; I m going to punch her a lot and hopefully I ll walk away with a clean KO. Ringside: When asked if TUF (The Ultimate Fighter) actually captured the true essence of both her and Ronda, Tate replied: I think for the most part they did a pretty accurate job but there was just so much more to it, like sometimes how they depict the story lines isn t really like the whole truth of things, you know what I mean? They have to leave out certain things to make it seem more dramatic as to how it seems I mean it is reality TV, so they like to have that missing link so that it leaves people watching the show something to debate about. But as far as our personalities and how Ronda and I interact with each other, I think they did a pretty good job capturing that. 20 December 1, 2013 THE MILITARY PRESS
