2 Nursing Lunch and Learn The Nursing Career Center hosted a panel of UKHealthcare RN s that had recently completed their BSN 4 Different RN to BSN programs were represented UK, EKU, KY State and IWU 2

4 John Durkin, RN, BSN Staff Nurse, Clinical Decision Units (CDU) UKHealthcare - jdurkin22@uky.edu Background Started out as a Nursing Care Technician Was inspired by his sister who went back to school after 48 years Applied to Kentucky State, UK, EKU and BCTC for ADN degree Got accepted to Kentucky State and received his ADN His motto, Don t let anyone stop you from achieving your goals! 4

5 John Durkin, RN, BSN Staff Nurse, Clinical Decision Units (CDU) UKHealthcare - jdurkin22@uky.edu Completed BSN in less than year through Kentucky State University Had 8 week sessions with 3 classes in each session 1 year completion was the major attraction to Kentucky State s BSN program Best part about program was 8 week sessions Least favorite thing was the balance of work, family, and school Clinical Requirements: Clinicals only for Leadership Class Used the Employee Education program (EEP) to Pay for School Biggest recommendation to nurses looking to go back to school is having good planning and time management skills Encouraged anyone to him jdurkin22@uky.edu with any questions about Kentucky State s RN to BSN program 5

6 Jane Hammons, RN, BSN Patient Care Manager 5S/5W UKHealthcare - jane.hammons@uky.edu Background Received ADN through Midway College Worked in the ICU for 12 years Being a role model for her children and maintaining a 4.0 GPA were some of her accomplishments Favorite motivational quote from Dr. Colleen Swartz, Don t let not having an education keep you from achieving your goals because that is not an excuse. 6

7 Jane Hammons, RN, BSN Patient Care Manager 5S/5W UKHealthcare - jane.hammons@uky.edu Completed BSN through the University of Kentucky Took two years going part time Location and the responsiveness of the faculty was an attraction to UK s program Traditional classroom time was one Saturday a month for each class, usually lasting 4-8 hours Took statistics and humanities class as prerequisites online through Morehead State Clinical Requirements: Clinicals only for Public Health Class Best part about the program was tuition reimbursement, location and Dr. Gina Lowry (RN to BSN Coordinator and faculty member) Least favorite thing about the program was the long classroom days Used the Employee Education program (EEP) to Pay for School Out of pocket expenses added up to about $500, including books and a laptop The one thing she recommends to other nurses thinking about going to school is to think about how long you want to be a staff nurse. How long you will actually have to continue what you are doing both physically and emotionally? The BSN degree provides many more options in Nursing...away from the bedside. 7

8 Mimi Roser, RN, BSN Perioperative Nursing Services UKHealthcare - mimi.roser@uky.edu Background Got ADN degree from Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) Did her RN to BSN through Eastern Kentucky University Got her BA in Psychology and worked in Pediatrics as an Administrator before going back to Nursing School Plans to continue at EKU for her MSN in

9 Mimi Roser, RN, BSN Perioperative Nursing Services UKHealthcare - mimi.roser@uky.edu Went full time to complete BSN in one year through Eastern Kentucky University Their great reputation and recommendations from friends led her to choose EKU s program At the time, there were only some online components such as Blackboard discussion boards. Also met in classroom twice per week in the evenings Did not have to take any prerequisites before application or acceptance. EKU requires a valid Kentucky nursing license and a minimum 2.0 GPA in previous nursing coursework Clinical Requirements: Two Clinicals (80 hrs. Fieldwork for Leadership and Public Health) Best part about program was it fit perfectly with work schedule and the faculty were always available for discussion Least favorite part was driving to Richmond twice a week Used the UK EEP to assist with tuition costs Choice of full-time option made out of pocket expenses total to $4,400 including tuition, all institution and nursing course fees, parking permit and books Biggest recommendation is to find a program that fits your needs (schedule, travel, etc.) and take advantage of tuition assistance! 9

Hay RN,BSN Patient Care Manager 6S/7E UKHealthcare - lauren.hay@uky.edu Completed BSN in 19 months through IWU The option to take one class at a time, no clinical requirements and being strictly online were some major attractions to this program Classes were eight weeks with a one week break in between ADN fulfilled prerequisite requirements but IWU also requires a religion and Bible course Best part about the program was the flexibility and not requiring any time away from work or previous home engagements. Also, all books are delivered to your home Least favorite thing was the added busy work, the time you spend in class has to be credited and they do this through discussion boards Clinical Requirements: No Clinicals!!! Used UK Nursing Tuition Program through Greg Collins Office to pay for school Out of pocket expenses totaled to $750 including the $5 a credit hour and books Biggest recommendation is, The sooner, the better. You never know what opportunities may arise and you never want education to be what holds you back. 11
