3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By Maggie McMorrow, Esq. Thank you for all your generosity and support of our great Foundation and our great community! 100 Lawyers Giving Back 2012 The new year brings new initiatives for the Collier County Bar Foundation! You will all soon receive a letter from our Collier County Bar Foundation President, Jeanne Seewald and myself regarding one of the new initiatives called 100 Lawyers Giving Back Lawyers Giving Back 2012 is a new giving opportunity for our Collier County Bar members. Our goal is to receive commitments from 100 individual lawyers to donate $100 in 2012 to the Foundation. Each year we ask local law firms and other organizations to sponsor Foundation events. This is different this is your opportunity as an individual to show your support to the Foundation. When you participate in the 100 Lawyers Giving Back 2012, your name will be published in the Adverse Witness each month in 2012, and publicized at our Foundation events throughout the year. Contributions to the 100 Lawyers Giving Back 2012 campaign will be used by the Foundation to support local charitable organizations and activities that fit within our mission statement. The mission of the Foundation is to provide funding for qualified individuals for law-related activities, encourage and promote education and community awareness of the law, and pursue and participate in charitable endeavors benefiting youth and underprivileged populations in Southwest Florida. Each year, the Foundation fulfills this mission in the following ways: 1) The Foundation sponsors Law Week each year, providing $3,400 in scholarships to students involved in the Collier County Mock Trial Competition. 2) The Foundation donates funds to Legal Aid s Adopt-A-Family program each year, providing hundreds of toys and gifts to underprivileged families during the Holidays. 3) The Foundation sponsors two pro bono clinics, one in Naples, and one in Immokalee, serving over 100 individuals with legal issues such as divorce, landlord/tenant disputes and foreclosure. 4) The Foundation, in conjunction with the Young Lawyers Section, sponsors Holidays in March to provide toys and gifts to needy children. Last year, the Foundation made additional contributions to Legal Aid, Eden Foundation, Golisano Children s Museum and Bikes for Tykes. In addition, the Foundation sponsored two JROTC cadets from Golden Gate High School for their annual trip to Washington DC, as well as a high school student in the Youth Leadership program of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce. Already this year, the Foundation donated $5,000 to Grace Place for Children and Families. Please consider being one of the first contributors to 100 Lawyers Giving Bank Thank you all for your generosity and support of our great Foundation and our great community! 4 COMMUNITY OUTREACH By Rev. Stephanie Munz Campbell Grace Place making a difference in Naples Wilmer is only one year old, but he is already an educational casualty, studies suggest. Why? Because his mother doesn t read to him. Grace Place, however, is changing outcomes for Wilmer and hundreds of at-risk children like him in Golden Gate city. Research confirms that comprehensive family literacy and learning programs like ours provide an effective, long-term approach to breaking the interrelated cycles of poverty and low literacy skills. Our emphasis is on the family for a simple reason study after study shows that family, home, and community are the true drivers of a child s education. With the help of the greater- Naples community, we are teaching Wilmer s mother, Olga, and over 140 other mothers this year how important it is to read to their young child. Through weekly Bright Beginnings classes these moms and little ones are learning and practicing essential skills language development, early learning activities, safety, discipline, nutrition - that change young lives forever. Grace Place also provides free After School Tutoring and Summer Learning Programs for over 220 elementary, middle, and high school students. Volunteers work with two students each, helping with homework, essential academic skills, enrichment learning opportunities, and create a critical mass of adults and community members that foster academic success and positive values. A music and arts program, two computer labs, a school garden, field trips, career exploration, and other opportunities open up a world of possibilities. Parents are enrolled in English language and literacy classes, citizenship classes, a computer lab, and whole families participate in a Family Literacy Program. The Grace Place emphasis on cradle-to-college supports and their holistic approach to connecting the student, school, family, and community is making an impact and resulting in significant outcomes. There are many ways to volunteer, support, or get personally involved at Grace Place. For more information, contact Rev. Stephanie Munz Campbell at or go to www. graceplacenaples.org. 6 By The Hon. Eugene Turner We ll miss you, Mark! Mark Middlebrook began his 17-year commitment to serving the 9 judges of Collier County as Deputy Court Administrator when he was 20 pounds lighter and with black hair. In 1995 there was no Circuit Wide Case Management Program, Drug Court, Mental Health Court, Teen Court, Domestic Violence Court, 4th floor judicial chambers and courtrooms, 5th floor administrative offices, home visits for county probationers, WiFi for the courtrooms and buildings, secured judicial parking lot, Courtsmart, Magistrates, 72 hour jail plea docket, Traffic Hearing Officers or many of the other programs and services that we now enjoy today thanks to his hard work and dedication. Behind the scene duties for the Court Administrator also include public information communication, building security, Judicial Civil Defense Officer, Emergency/Hurricane Services Director, coordinator between more than seven law enforcement agencies, judicial budget preparation and presentation to the Board of County Commissioners, and memberships in various state and local committees. Yet we ask What have you done for me lately? Why would someone want to leave all this plus daily contact with 14 charming, nondemanding elected judges to go work for a lot of life appointed Federal Judges in the un-eventful small town of Tampa? Could it merely be for football, hockey, basketball or baseball? Mark s presence will be missed. We thank him for his service, wish him the best, and God s speed. FAMILY COURT NOTICE Please note that effective January 3, 2012 there will be only two family court judges. Judge Lauren Brodie and Judge Jim Shenko will hear all family law matters. Anyone previously scheduled with Judge Ramiro Manalich should check the Clerk s website to discover the newly assigned judge and contact the appropriate office to schedule hearings. 7 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT By Kathryn Leib Hunter Executive Director, NAMI NAMI celebrates its 25th birthday in Collier NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Collier County recently celebrated our 25th Birthday of impacting lives in our Community. NAMI strives to improve the lives of the one in four families affected by serious and persistent mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety/ panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and the childhood disorders of Aspergers, ADD and ADHD. NAMI has been the catalyst in helping to change our system of care, through education and advocacy. Since 2008, NAMI has provided Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) to over 500 people: those in the Collier County Sheriff s Office, Naples Police Department, Marco Island Police Department, National Park Service, Collier County Probation, State Probation, the Judiciary, and several lay people as well. The outcome of this 40 hour training is that Law Enforcement Officers not only become certified in Intervention, they develop specific tools when responding or working with a person that has a mental health diagnosis- or their loved one. We know that after three years of providing this training, officers are very successful in diverting someone in a mental health crisis from the forensic system and helping them to obtain the treatment they need. The success of this program made NAMI realize that we could develop a specific 8 hour course for those in the criminal justice profession. Judge Janeice Martin worked with Kathryn Leib Hunter, the Executive Director of NAMI to implement Mental Illness Primer for the Criminal Justice Professional. Similar to CIT training, this is a collaborative effort between NAMI, the Collier County Sheriff s Office, Naples Police Department, and the David Lawrence Center. To date, we have offered this 8 hour course (providing 8 CLE s for attorneys) twice. Lisa Mead of the Collier Bar has also been instrumental in helping to secure these CLE s. Topics include Signs and Symptoms of Mental Illness, Medications, Treatment and Confidentiality, Calm Assess and Facilitate, Family/Consumer panel, and Community Resources. The Family/Consumer panel is perhaps the most effective session. NAMI believes nothing for us without us and we know after 25 years of providing peer led education that people learn best from those who are affected by the diagnoses. This panel invites family members, or persons who have someone in their family with a diagnosis to share with the class how it has not only impacted them as a family, but convey how they would hope to be treated if their loved one was arrested. The same premise is true for consumers. A consumer is a person with a mental health diagnosis. That is not a name that NAMI has chosen for them, but was established many years ago on a national level, by persons that have a diagnosis. Consumers then share with the participants firsthand accounts as to what it feels like to have schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression. They can also best articulate what it is like for them trying to navigate the judicial system. Lt. Garrett from Polk County provides the participants with the nuts and bolts of how continued page 10 Adverse Witness, February 2012 Page 7

10 NAMI continued from page 7 to Calm, Assess, and Facilitate (CAF) during an interaction with a consumer. Talking in a low voice, maintaining eye contact, assuring help is all part of the CAF lecture portion. In our 40 hour CIT training, officers are required to do a role play to demonstrate their understanding of CAF and ability to implement it. We then provide an Empathy exercise: we use two different tools to help participants understand what it is like to hear voices. The purpose is to have participants understand what it is like to work within a large system of care while experiencing auditory hallucinations. The result is that the participants do have a sense of empathy for consumers. Finally, we offer a panel representing community resources. Often professionals do not know about services provided by NAMI, DLC, St. Matthews House, our FACT team, and others. NAMI serves over 14,000 persons free of charge each year free of charge. We screen over a thousand children within our HUGS program (Health Under Guided Systems), and have provided follow up assessment and system navigation for anyone who needs it. We offer free support groups for adults, children, and adolescents. We have a very active Drop In Center for adults with a serious and persistent mental illness. The Sarah Ann Center is open Monday- Friday, and is a safe haven to persons to go during the day for socialization and integration into our community. Daily activities include computer classes, support groups, lunch, arts and crafts, community outings, life skills, and more. We also have a food pantry available and a computer for ACCESS services to DCF- for food stamps, Medicaid, etc. Through our fundraising efforts, we help people pay for an emergency psychiatric appointment, mediations, therapy, or other needs to stay in our community. NAMI believes that a consumer is just a person, and not defined by their mental illness. By educating our community we reduce the stigma attached to mental illness. Here at NAMI, we check our judgment at the door. And we invite you to join us in doing that. Our March fundraiser is our Annual Walk= this year will be our 10th Walk, and we will continue to celebrate our 25th Birthday. The event is Saturday March 24th in the morning at Cambier Park. We have had an active walk team in the past called Snails of Justice and would love for you to join them! Our Grand Marshal is Eric Roberts, actor.
