26 Doctor of Philosophy in Management Science IIT Stuart s Doctor of Philosophy in Management Science program is a culmination of the school s strengths in the next economy topics of analytics, quantitative methods, and business in the context of science and technology. Game theory helps explain the fundamental strategic tensions that exist in the marketplace, underlying many business-to-business and businessto-consumer interactions. Game theory is also the analytical backbone of Internet monetization, driving the structure behind countless advertising auctions and design decisions. At IIT Stuart School of Business, we embed tools from game theory in our curriculum, beginning with a core course on managerial economics, to a course on strategic marketing, and a course on negotiations and strategic decision making. As an emerging discipline, automated trading covers quantitative finance, trading strategy, computer programming, risk management, project management, and even organizational structure and behavior. And Chicago is the best place in the world to study automated trading, because so many trading firms, exchanges, and hedge funds are tackling the competitive issues right in our backyard. In my classes, we spend our time discussing technologies and programming techniques and applying them to problems in finance and automated trading. In their projects, my students get the chance to really get their hands dirty with the issues of getting things to work in both quantitative research and real-time trading environments. When new technologies arise, I incorporate them into my courses so students are well-prepared to hit the ground running when they get a job. 36
