Welcome to the Inaugural Gran Fondo Salt Lake! This marks the first year of the Gran Fondo Salt Lake and we would like to thank you for chosing to be a small part of our efforts to create a first class cycling event for what we believe is a first class cycling community. Many of you are familiar with the Cycle Salt Lake Century. Many of you were left standing with virtually no notice when that event cancelled its 2014 ride just before it was time to saddle up. We at Extra Mile Racing LLC were among those stunned by that development. We also decided to do something about it. And Gran Fondo Salt Lake was born. While trying to keep some of what made the Cycle Salt Lake Century a good event and adding details we believe will make it a great event, we hope to start cautiously and build our way to excellence. That means instead of throwing money right out of the gate at elaborate arches, billboards and signage, we want the spend that money on you the cyclists to help ensure your ride is a quality experience. We also wanted to create an event that was noticeably different and unique. Salt Lake City and the state of Utah have tremendous geographic features. Instead of giving our participants the flattest, easiest route possible, we want to embrace our mountains and hills. While Gran Fondo Salt Lake is not a flat event, it is not an impossible challenge, either. With close to 4,000 feet of elevation gain, our 100 mile route has some steady climbs, some rolling hills and some fun descents. We are excited to have the support of some fabulous sponsors. University of Utah Health Care, First Endurance, Progrexion, Salt Lake City Bicycle Company, Plan 7 Endurance Coaching, Dr Pepper, Fat Boy Ice Cream, Lifetime Products, Louis Garneau cycling gear and many others have helped us create this event. As Gran Fondo Salt Lake grows into the future, we anticipate adding some incredible features. Celebrity guests, charity banquets, nutrition and bike maintenance clinics and more is just a start. We can t wait to see where the roads take us. Mostly, we re glad you have decided to take this first ride with us. Let s make it great! THANK YOU! Jared Eborn Gran Fondo Salt Lake Director Extra Mile Racing LLC jared@extramileracing.com

THE RULES Gran Fondo Salt Lake is a non-competitive event. While we realize that anytime two friends line up to ride bikes together a race may or may not happen, Gran Fondo Salt Lake IS NOT a race. But we will provide finish times because we know many of you want to have a time recorded and we ve got you covered. That said, Gran Fondo Salt Lake is also not an open-ended event. If you can not maintain a pace of 13 miles per hour, please consider shortening your ride to the 65 or 35 Mile options. After a certain period of time, we need to let our volunteers and staff go home and close aid stations on the course. While the race director and key support personnel will stay on the job until the last rider is accounted for, we ask that all riders understand their training and their fitness and plan accordingly. Gran Fondo Salt Lake does NOT have closed roads. Red lights & stop signs mean STOP unless a police officer is on site waiving you through. We have made efforts to ensure for safe roads with coned shoulders, message boards and traffic control. But it is required that riders observe all Utah traffic laws. Please do not ride more than single file if at all possible. Some stretches or road can accommodate two-abreast riding, but others are single file at best. Rider smart! Helmets are required for Gran Fondo Salt Lake. No helmet, no ride. Personal audio devises are discouraged. If you simply must ride with your ipod, please leave your left ear open so you can hear traffic approaching behind you and hear On Your Left! from approaching cyclists. If your bike has two wheels and two pedals and you wear a helmet, you are welcome to join us. Road bikes, mountain bikes, triathlon bikes, beach cruisers, electric bikes we love you all. Please bring a spare tube, a patch kit and maybe a pump with you. We will have numerous SAG and support staff along the road, but any rider attempting a ride of 35 or more miles should have the basic skills necessary to change a flat tire. Poachers are not welcome. Please do not invite friends or teammates to ride along with you for free even if they are just on the same road at the same time they are masquerading as Gran Fondo Salt Lake participants and using resources you paid for whether that be on course assistance or mooching off the traffic control assistance your entry fee helped pay for. If a rider approaches one of our aid stations and does not have a Gran Fondo Salt Lake bib number, they will not be helped and if possible will be shamed on social media with pictures and unflattering things said about them. J Thank the volunteers. They re giving up a Saturday to help you out! How nice is that? Tell them how much you appreciate them. Ride friendly. Gran Fondo Salt Lake is a tough ride it has 3900 feet of up for the 100 Mile riders and more than 6,000 feet for those who want to tackle our optional KOM/QOM challenge climb. But it s primarily a great way to spend a day with a few hundred buddies on two wheels. Support each other, offer help if needed and don t be a wheel sucker. Take a turn up front and let someone draft off you for a change. J

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE The University of Utah Health Care crew is providing numerous rolling medical personnel for the event. They ll carry simple first aid kits. In the case of an emergency, 911 will be called. With several doctors, EMTs, nurses, physical therapists all on bikes and sharing the road with you, you re in good hands. We ll also have a University of Utah Health Care vehicle on the course with more significant medical supplies if necessary. To help you recognize the medical providers on course, just look for someone wearing one of these nice jerseys. They re there to help you! During registration you were asked to provide us with information to assist you in the unlikely case of an emergency. This includes emergency contact name and number. We re also providing you with a quick form on the back of your bib number to write the same information. We hope no one ever reads it, but if you are found unresponsive on the road, medical help will cut off your bib number and use the information on the back to get you the best care possible. Additionally, the back of your bib is a coupon for a Buy One, Get One Free bike tube from Salt Lake City Bicycle Company. Save it!

We want your feedback on the 2015 ride and your ideas on how we can make improvements for our 2016 event. We event directors think we know everything but we don t. So we re going to rely on you to help us get better. Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a drawing for a FREE Gran Fondo Salt Lake bike kit that s a jersey, some shorts, gloves, arm warmers and skull cap.

COURSE MAPS The 2015 Gran Fondo Salt Lake 100 Mile course is not easy. We re in Utah, after all. If you want to find a flat course, try Kansas or Iowa. With roughly 3,900 feet of vertical gain and descent on the 100 Mile Route, your legs will be tested. But the course is not terrible you can do this!

Starting and finishing at the Utah State Fairpark, Gran Fondo Salt Lake riders will head west to Saltair along the frontage roads before turning south to ride through Magna and the Salt Lake Valley s west side. Four aid stations will be placed along the course and riders will pass three of those twice meaning you will have seven opportunities to stop, fill up water bottles, grab a quick GU gel or other snack and get back on the road. The Gran Fondo Salt Lake course is NOT a closed course. We have made efforts to increase safety with traffic cones, electric message signs and police assistance. Your safety is important to us, but it is also important that riders share the road with motor vehicles. Our 65 Mile ride is less daunting and will have three aid stations along the way. You ll have one steady climb, but then a quick descent and return to the finish line. After leaving Saltair, riders move south and west into Magna along Utah Highway 201 which will have the shoulder coned by Wasatch Barricade Services for your safety. Riders skirt the west side of Magna and head south along U-111 until 5400 South where they will travel to the Mountain View Corridor. Riders will be advised to take the bike path at 7800 South in order to access the aid station at 8200 South. Riders then reverse course and make their way back to the start/finish line. For more detailed route information and maps, please visit GranFondoSaltLake.com/course

Our 35 Mile riders enjoy a flat ride from Salt Lake City to Saltair and back along frontage roads with minimal traffic. After leaving the start line, 35 Mile riders will access a bike path south of the airport and then access the I-80 Frontage Road west of the International Center. An aid station at Saltair marks your midpoint and turnaround location. 35 Mile riders will return the same way they came and be first in line when the post-ride meals are served at approximately 11 a.m. KOM/QOM CHALLENGE This ride is not for the weak of heart or of legs. We want to test you. But we also want to reward you. For those up for the challenge, we have included what many believe to be the most difficult climb in the Salt Lake Valley Butterfield Canyon. Though less than seven miles in length, this canyon lulls you into a false sense of security with a seemingly routine first four miles with a grade of only 4-6 percent. After a sharp hairpin turn, however, the grade pitches upward to nearly 20 percent at times for the final 2.5 miles to the summit. Many a strong cyclist has found himself walking his bike for a few steps. The recent rain storms have left Butterfield Canyon a mess with gravel and other run off. If Salt Lake County determines the road to be unsafe, we will not include this portion of the route in Gran Fondo Salt Lake in We will still hand out our GFSL keychain prizes to all riders who signed up for the 100 Mile distance, though.

AID STATIONS Gran Fondo Salt Lake will have fully supported aid stations. In addition to friendly volunteers, Aid Stations will be supplied with the following: Portable Restrooms A bike pump Extra bike tubes A basic first aid kit Water First Endurance EFS drink mix GU Energy Gels and Chomps Bananas Salty snacks HAM Radio operators to communicate with HQ We realize not every rider likes exactly the same fuel for their rides. We ve made a solid effort to provide quality food and drink items at your aid stations. If you have specific tastes, preferences or needs for your ride, please bring those items with you. Don t overdo it and don t treat the boxes of GU as an unlimited supply. Grabbing 10 GUs at each aid station is bad form and will lead to bad karma on the road. Aid Stations will be located at the following mile marker locations Mile 17 Saltair Mile South on Mountain View Corridor Mile 47 University of Utah Health Care Daybreak Mile 54 Porter Rockwell Road & Mountain View Corridor Mile 61 University of Utah Health Care Daybreak Mile South on Mountain View Corridor Mile 83 Saltair Mile 100 Finish line Utah State Fairpark Some aid stations are closer than others. If you feel able to skip one aid station and continue on the route, please do. But make sure you have two full water bottles for the longer stretches between aid stations. If at any time you want to cut your ride short, there are several opportunities to shave off a few miles from the course.

POST RIDE MEAL After 100 Miles in the saddle you re going to be hungry. We ve got you taken care of. Rather than offering a mid-ride meal and having a heavy sandwich sit in your gut for another 40 miles or more, we believe the big meal should be offered at the finish line. We ve made arrangements for a few food trucks to park at the finish line and wait for your order. That way your meal is fresh and hasn t been sitting in a cooler for a day or two getting stale. Here s how it will work. Each Gran Fondo Salt Lake participant will be given a meal voucher when they receive their finisher s medal. This voucher is good for one entrée up to $5 in value. Additional food truck purchases above $5 will be the responsibility of the rider. Vegetarian options will be available. Gran Fondo Salt Lake will provide drinks and other snacks at the finish line. Our friends at First Endurance are giving each rider a bottle of Ultragen recovery drink to get you back to feeling good. We will also have cold water, Dr Pepper TEN, Fat Boy Ice Cream sandwiches, chocolate milk from Winder Farms and various other fresh fruits and snacks. PARKING & TRANSPORTATION Gran Fondo Salt Lake encourages riders to carpool, take public transportation or otherwise limit their impact on traffic and the environment while participating in our event. For those driving to Gran Fondo Salt Lake s Packet Pickup, Expo and Event, please park in the Utah State Fairpark secure parking lots. Access is available at 200 North 1000 West. Please drive safely and arrive in time to start with your group of riders. Depending on the size of our overall field, riders may be started in waives of riders every 5-10 minutes to relieve congestion on the road during the first few miles and to prevent bottlenecking at the bike path entrance near the Airport on North Temple. 100 Mile riders depart at 7:00 a.m. 65 Mile riders depart at 7:30 a.m. 35 Mile riders depart at 8:00 a.m.

2016 & BEYOND Gran Fondo Salt Lake is a new event. As such, there will be growing pains. We purposely chose a route different than the Cycle Salt Lake Century used because we wanted to make it clear that Gran Fondo Salt Lake is a new venture with a new focus. We are NOT Cycle Salt Lake Century. As you ride with us, we plan on soliciting your opinions and getting your feedback regarding the event and how you think it could best serve the Utah cycling community. To avoid digging too deep of a financial hole right out of the gate, we have chosen to invest our budget in our participants rather than create elaborate signage and productions those can come later. For now, we want you to know that you are truly appreciated as we launch this new event in the hole create when the Cycle Salt Lake Century disappeared. We have big plans and dreams and we re thrilled to have you along for the ride. Because the name of the event includes Salt Lake, we feel it is important to feature the city, the valley and the lake in the ride. While the course may change in future years, we will stay true to our namesake. Some challenging climbs make cycling in Utah what it is. We know some riders prefer easy flat routes and we will do our best to include some of that. But we truly believe cycling is meant to be a challenging sport and we look forward to adding toughness to the event each year. Again, thank you for being part of the first Gran Fondo Salt Lake.
