1 ECJ Top 20 - European leading paint companies Respectable figures. The ECJ Top 20 lists the twenty leading paint and coatings companies whose headquarters are in Europe. The rankings are determined on the basis of sales of paints, coatings and related products. There have been several changes since last year. The major European companies continue to perform strongly, occupying the top 4 spots in the ECJ Top 20. In fact, there are two heavyweights from the Netherlands in the top four. It comes as no surprise that the Dutch producer Akzo Nobel has defended the top spot. As in the previous year, it is followed by ICI from the UK, BASF from Germany and SigmaKalon, the Netherlands. Altana has leap-frogged up the charts, partly due to the fact that it does not disclose the figures of its coatings sector. Most of the 20 leading companies increased their sales in Particularly noteworthy is the sales growth recorded by the European group Materis Peintures, which generated almost a quarter of sales in Italy, and a further quarter in Spain and Portugal. A large proportion of the top 20 companies chalked up considerable successes in European trade. One exception to this, however, is the Danish company Dyrup. Following recently stagnating annual sales, its sales actually declined slightly in For the first time, the Slovenian company Helios jumped with rising sales figures into the ECJ Top 20 list. Companies that exclusively produce adhesives, construction chemicals or printing inks are omitted from the survey, as well as manufacturers with headquarters outside Europe. Some companies do not disclose the proportion of total sales accounted for by paints and coatings. Their sales figures are marked accordingly. Companies that are level-pegging in terms of sales and hence occupy the same position are listed in alphabetical order. Miriam von Bardeleben 1.
