WHAT DO PAST STUDENTS THINK? Serena Shaddick After to coming back to Esperance and setting up my own video production company, I realised that many of my clients also needed expertise in graphic design. To maximise potential work opportunities, business profits and overall customer satisfaction I commenced a Graphic Design qualification at Goldfields Institute. The course was perfect for me as it allowed me the flexibility study whilst I continued working. As a person whom is not always confident with learning new software, what I liked most about the course was the extra support and the extended learning projects that were always readily available and encouraged. The skills I have acquired have been instrumental in the growth of my business. I can now offer a full media service for my clients, without having to outsource any graphic design components, which is what I did before. However, if I am extra busy on a particular project I do sometimes still outsource work, yet so far it has always been to other Goldfields Institute graduates! Nyree Bowden 8 Studying Cert III Graphic Design part-time online with Goldfields Institute has been an absolutely fantastic experience for me. Living in a remote location and having young children to care for at home, has meant that I needed an option which had flexible hours and was online. This course has fulfilled those needs and helped me achieve many of my creative, personal and career goals. My favorite assessment was layout and production where I created my own digital portfolio, which showcases all my work so far. This is a fantastic resource for me now and will be something I can update as I go along. Learning how to deal with the creative process from scratch has been probably the most rewarding skill set I have learnt from the course. I feel confident in taking on real clients now, and have already started some freelance work, just through word of mouth. Im really looking forward to the day when I can commit to full-time graphic design work, but until then I will start the Cert IV part-time and freelance from home. Take A Bite Out of Jamie Neal Susi Watson Homemade Goodness of esperance Take A Bite Out of Homemade Goodness of esperance I chose to study Cert III and Cert IV in Graphic Design because I had a strong passion for art and design, and I wanted to turn my passion into a career! When I first started I had no knowledge of the industry or even how to use the software, but my lecturer was brilliant and extremely supportive and within no time I felt very confident with my abilities. I found the course to be a great outlet for my creativity; it was a very rewarding learning environment and everyone was so lovely and helpful! I ve made great friends studying at Goldfields Institute and now I m studying a degree in Creative Advertising and Graphic Design at Curtin University and running my own design business, Deadly Nightshade Designs. To be honest, studying Cert III and Cert IV in graphic design was probably the best decision I ve ever made! I first began studying Graphic Art at Goldfields Institute six years ago. I came to it because I ve always had a creative flair but have never been willing to sacrifice job security for the uncertain income of an artist, and I thought that Graphic Art would be perfect for me. I was right! I learned enough skills in that first year that I was able to begin client-based work immediately. I ve been back to do another certificate level since then, and am working my way through yet another this year. The skills that I learn while studying at Goldfields Institute reflect my growing competence in the workplace almost step by step. The support and guidance I ve had from the lecturing staff have really assisted me to not only learn the skills I needed in order to make a career of this, but I ve also been encouraged to keep developing to a point of real professionalism.

CUV50311 Diploma of Graphic Design You will graduate from the course with a sound understanding of design theory and practice and will be able to analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources to generate design solutions. Graphic designers work in many different commercial and community contexts across both print and digital media. The course will prepare you to work in the graphic design industry and your work may include or have links to areas such advertising and promotion, art direction, branding, corporate identity, instructional design, packaging, signage and web design. 14

DIPLOMA COURSE OUTLINE CLUSTER 1: Excellence in design through historical influences BSBCRT501A Originate and develop concepts CUVGRD501A Research visual communication history and theory CLUSTER 2: Conceptualisation and visualising your ideas CUVACD501A Refine drawing and other visual representation tools CUVACD512A Work with photomedia in creative practice 15 The knowledge of how design and design concepts developed over time is extremely relevant to designers in contemporary practice. This cluster provides an overview of how histories of design evolved alongside visual communication theories. Students will contemplate the relationship between design and visual communication theory amid political, cultural and technological developments. Students are to think critically about the stages of development and draw their own conclusions about how these theories and histories apply to the cultural contexts in which their practice is situated. This cluster aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of the design exploration and visualising: visual and tactile conceptualisation and basic design representation appropriate to graphic design in the context of creative problem solutions. Students will be introduced to a variety of visualisation techniques used to communicate ideas, both tangible and intangible.

DIPLOMA COURSE OUTLINE CLUSTER 3: Visual Communication BSBDES403A Develop and extend design skills and practice BSBCRT401A Articulate, present and debate ideas BSBMKG402B Analyse consumer behaviour for specific markets CLUSTER 4: 2D & 3D Graphic Design CUVGRD502A Produce graphic designs for 2-D and 3-D applications CUVGRD503A Produce typographic design solutions BSBDES502A Establish, negotiate and refine a design brief 16 In this cluster students will investigate meanings, messages and information that are imparted, both overtly and subliminally, in design work. Students are encouraged to develop an indepth understanding of how visual language is utilised to communicate with the targeted audiences, purchasers or users. By refining their drawing and other visual representation tools, students will present a body of their own creative work that matches with the professional standards. Planning and producing a body of two-dimensional (2- D) and three-dimensional (3-D) graphic design work in response to a variety of visual communication challenges is the main goal of this cluster. Students, by combining technical, conceptual and organizational skills, will develop a command of relevant software programs, an understanding of materials and applications on site specific 3-D graphic design projects, and the creative ability to generate ideas to meet different needs; from 2-D postage stamps to 3-D public space signage.

DIPLOMA COURSE OUTLINE CLUSTER 5: User centred graphic design BSBADV509A Create mass print media advertisements BSBADV510A Create mass electronic media advertisements CUVDIG502A Investigate technologies for the creation of digital art CUFDIG502A Design web environments Students will learn how to design for digital and print production outcomes and about working in a collaborative creative process in the work environment and in a broader life context. This cluster is very important for business and community activities where a creative team effort is highly effective and valued. This cluster focuses on effective engagement into the collaborative process, underpinned by a commitment to trust and ethics as key features of collaborative creative projects. CLUSTER 6: Refining & evaluating your ideas CUVGRD504A Create and manipulate graphics CUVGRD505A Design and manipulate complex layouts Talent and technical skills are needed to implement and present designs, but the practice of refining, revising and gradually improving solutions is the most valuable and necessary ability for a successful designer in any field. Students will learn how to develop their ideas through disciplined analytic and creative work, not pure inspiration. Students will start to dedicate their attention to the problem, research existing solutions, generate ideas, and improve them. 17

DIPLOMA COURSE OUTLINE CLUSTER 7: Professional graphic design practice CUVGRD506A Develop graphic design practice to meet industry needs CUVPRP503A Present a body of own creative work CUVPRP504A Establish and maintain environmentally sustainable creative practice The first step towards creating effective designs is to understand the consumer and the market which the product serves; the best designers know why, when, where and how products meet consumer needs. This cluster, therefore, not only helps students understand basic concepts such as product, place, price and promotion in marketing to consumers, but also creates awareness about buyer characteristics such as attitudes, motivations, perceptions, lifestyle, knowledge, and personality, all of which affect consumer choice. Designers, it is hoped, will develop empathy and awareness so that they can create designs that appeal to both the hearts and minds of consumers. 18
