2 10 Art Education: Museum Education Emphasis The Master in Education - Art Education: Museum Education Emphasis is designed to meet the needs of those individuals who are pursuing a career in Museum education. The program provides opportunities for students who hold a BA or BS degree in Art Education, BFA, BA or a BS in a Visual Arts degree program, Art History and Museum Studies. Museums of the 21st century are evolving. They are increasing in number, expanding in size, and becoming virtually available. Practical approaches are needed for incorporating contemporary art into curricula. This program explores museum education through dynamic discussions about readings on art, visual literacy through interpretation of culturally relevant images, museums, and curricula; engages in gallery activities and group discussions with opportunities for studio projects; and, creates new information and materials for classroom use. This 36-hour program is designed for high school and middle school teachers, scientists, researchers, or anyone who could benefit from an advanced education in biology. The Department has established itself as a leader nationwide in the successful delivery of its online Biology graduate degree program. The Curriculum & Instruction advances the professional growth of educators, whether the goal is to expand work within a given discipline, or address particular instructional concerns. The seven concentration areas of study are: Elementary Education Instructional Effectiveness Early Childhood Education Reading/Special Education English as a Second Language Secondary Education Transitional Certification English as a Second Language is the only concentration that will lead to an additional supplementary endorsement. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Program: Curriculum & Instruction Curriculum & Instruction Secondary Education Concentration in English The Master of Arts in Education in Curriculum and Instruction in Secondary Education is a 36-credit hour program designed for English teachers; 18 credit hours of content coursework is delivered by the English Department and 18 credit hours of pedagogy coursework is offered by the Department. The program is primarily designed for middle school and high school teachers who are interested in furthering their education in English/Language Arts area and becoming better English teachers. All courses are offered online. This program will provide teachers with the opportunity to network with other colleagues throughout the Nation who have similar professional goals. To accommodate teachers busy schedules, one course will be offered each fall and spring semesters, with two courses offered in the summer sessions. Program: Curriculum and Instruction - Secondary Education Concentration in English Prerequisites: Bachelor s degree is required with a major or minor in English or English Education. Applicants must hold a valid teaching certificate and have teaching experience in a secondary school setting, as well as meet the requirements for admission set forth by the Office of Graduate Studies & Research. Early Childhood Inclusive Additional Endorsement The online Early Childhood Inclusive program is designed for in-service teachers, assistants in preschools, staff in HeadStart programs, and other non-traditional students who are unable to attend regular face-to-face classes at a university. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. This endorsement prepares graduates to teach children ages 0-5 in special education settings and ages 0-8 in regular education settings. Participants will already have their Bachelor s in teaching, which can be in any subject/discipline. The number of hours a participant needs in order to complete the degree is dependent upon the Teaching Endorsement that is currently held. A degree audit will examine the courses already completed toward the Additional Endorsement program and will determine how many of the programs hours will be needed for completion.

Program: School Principalship PreK-8 or 7-12 Prerequisites: Bachelor s degree - Teacher Certification Supervisor of Special Education The Master of Arts in Education Supervisor of Special Education is designed to provide the necessary background to serve as a Supervisor of Special Education. This program meets the requirements for Administrative and Supervisory Certification in Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification. Program: - Supervisor of Special Education Prerequisites: Must hold a currently valid Special Education endorsement with two years of experience as a Special Education Teacher. Endorsements in School Psychology and Speech Pathology are considered as Special Education endorsements and serving as a school psychologist and/or speech pathologist is considered to be teaching experience. Curriculum Supervisor of Academic Area The Master of Arts in Education - Curriculum Supervisor of Academic Area is for the preparation of academic field supervisors. This program fulfills the requirements for the Standard Administrative and Supervisory Certificate with an endorsement in a specific field. It is also offered as a non-certification program. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification. Program: Curriculum Supervisor of Academic Area Prerequisites: Must hold a currently valid endorsement in the academic area selected for this program, with two years of experience as a teacher in the content area. Educational Specialist - School Superintendent The Educational Specialist is an advanced degree for those who already hold a Master s degree. The Specialist degree prepares current administrators for the role of school superintendent. The coursework is offered online while the Field Study and Internship courses are completed with experienced school administrators serving as mentors. This 33-credit hour program meets the requirements for the Nebraska Professional Administrative and Supervisory Certificate, preparing candidates for superintendent positions in all public and parochial schools in Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. The UNK Department has established itself as a leader in the successful delivery of the Educational Specialist Degree. Degree: Program: Educational Specialist School Superintendent

4 12 Credit Hours: 33 credit hours - 69 credit hours (depending on past degrees) Prerequisites: Must hold a Master s degree in related education field, and an administrative certificate Format: Online (except Field Study and Internship which may be completed off campus) Contact: Holly Peterson petersonha@unk.edu English as a Second Language (ESL) Supplementary Endorsement The online English as a Second Language (ESL) Supplementary Endorsement provides teachers with current approaches to teaching ESL students. The program focuses on instructional methods, curriculum, and teaching materials that promote the mastery of English in order for students to achieve academically in all content areas. All coursework is presented online. This program is a 24-credit hour graduate supplemental endorsement which can be applied towards a Master of Curriculum and Instruction degree. The ESL Supplementary Endorsement is approved by the Nebraska State Department of Education. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Endorsement: ESL Supplementary Endorsement Gifted Education Endorsement The Gifted Endorsement is designed to prepare educators with the knowledge base and competencies necessary for the appropriate education of gifted and talented learners. These 18 credit hours are necessary for the Nebraska Supplementary Endorsement in Gifted Education. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Endorsement: Gifted Education Endorsement Credit Hours: 18 credit hours History The master s degree in history at UNK is designed for a wide variety of persons interested in pursuing graduate education in historical study. The program offers credits for those just beginning a graduate career, teachers and others desiring further professional development, and those seeking greater personal fulfillment. Two options are available: thesis and non-thesis (for those interested in a terminal degree). Coursework for either option is offered both on campus and online. Students may choose to take all their courses online, or on campus, or they may choose to blend these delivery methods together in one program. A focused, yet eclectic professional program, the history master s degree can launch a potential career in a number of promising directions. Degree: Master of Arts Program: History Prerequisites: Bachelor s degree with at least 18 hours of history Contact: Amber Alexander or Stacey Stubbs History historygradstudies@unk.edu Phone: The application deadlines are June 15 for Fall Semester; October 15 for Spring Semester; and March 15 for Summer Session. Information Technology Endorsement The information technology track is designed for individuals who are interested in the computer science aspect of instructional technology. The track focuses on information technology teaching methodologies, programming techniques, and system administration skills. This track will provide a strong foundation for individuals who are working in the information technology areas related to schools, multimedia, web design specialists, and for individuals interested in more of a technology focus area of instruction. It is also designed for business professionals who train or support end users. For certified teachers, this track will lead to a supplemental endorsement in Information Technology, which allows recipients to teach programming and web design courses in K-12 schools. For non-teachers, this track does not lead to the initial teaching certificate but it does allow for flexibility in course selection and inclusion of additional computer science and information technology courses. All the classes taken for the Information Technology track apply towards the Master of Science in Education in Instructional Technology degree. Endorsement: Information Technology Endorsement Credit Hours: 27 credit hours Instructional Technology The Master of Science in Education - Instructional Technology offers four concentrations for students to choose from -- (1) The Instructional Technology Concentration focuses on the application aspects of computer and other technologies in education and business training. Graduates will be able to manage and use IT resources in their classrooms, buildings, districts, or workplaces. (2) The Leadership in Instructional Technology Concentration is for those who are interested in pursuing a management and/or training position in business or education. (3) The School Librarian Concentration focuses on developing school librarians with technological expertise. This concentration may lead to a PK-12 School Librarian Endorsement. (4) The Information Technology Concentration is designed for K-12 teachers who teach IT courses or provide IT support to their school district. Degree: Master of Science in Education

5 13 Program: Instructional Technology Prerequisites: Bachelor s degree Leadership in Instructional Technology Endorsement The Leadership in Instructional Technology track leads to a supplemental endorsement for the Nebraska Department of Education. It is designed to provide administrative and leadership skills in the use of technology in school settings. In addition to developing instructional technology skills, the candidate will develop technology administration abilities, manage professional development resources, and will be able to provide instructional technology leadership for his or her school building or district. For certified teachers, this track will lead to a supplemental endorsement in Leadership in instructional Technology. For non-teachers, this track does not lead to the initial teaching certificate but it does allow for flexibility in course selection and inclusion of additional management and administrative technology courses. All the classes taken for the Leadership in Instructional Technology track apply towards the Master of Science in Education in Instructional Technology degree. Endorsement: Leadership in Instructional Technology Endorsement Credit Hours: 27 credit hours MBA (Blended) The University of Nebraska at Kearney has restructured its AACSB accredited MBA program (Generalist Track) by blending online classes with face-to-face class meetings to deliver an engaging, real world educational experience. Students get the best of both worlds - the flexibility of online courses combined with the personal attention, interactivity, and experiential learning of in-person delivery. With nearly 85% of the instruction offered online, students are only required to attend face-to-face classes about 15% of the time. Seven classes are offered totally online while four classes are offered in a blended format (mostly online with 6 or less on-campus meetings). A typical semester may consist of one fully online class and one blended class. Degree: Master of Business Administration - Generalist Track Program: Business Credit Hours: 33 credit hours Delivery: Blended (Mostly Online) Admission Requirements: Contact: Dr. Srivatsa (Sri) Seshadri MBA seshadris@unk.edu Phone: Music Education The Department of Music & Performing Arts offers its graduate music program to serve three main purposes: 1)Provide music courses for those teachers who seek a Master of Arts in Education-Music Education degree program; 2) Make available a variety of courses for those students who do not wish to pursue an advanced degree, and 3) Provide experiences for graduate students which will serve their cultural and professional needs. At least one music course will be available each fall and spring semester with three to four music courses offered each summer. Several non-music courses are available each fall, spring and summer. These courses will all be offered within a 3-year period. This degree does not grant certification to teach music in K-12 schools. With two tracks available, teachers have the option of choosing either the 1) Pedagogy Emphasis or 2) Special Populations Emphasis. The Pedagogy Emphasis provides graduates with advanced knowledge and competence in the teaching of physical education in elementary to post-secondary school settings. The Special Population Emphasis provides graduates with advanced knowledge and competence in providing physical education to students with disabilities and leads to the endorsement in Adapted Physical Education issued by the Nebraska Department of Education. 6 14 Reading PK-12 The MAE in Reading PK-12 is a 36-credit hour program offered in a convenient online format for educators who are interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and methodology to diagnose and facilitate instructional strategies. This may include classroom teachers, resource teachers, reading specialists or school administrators. All coursework is presented online. This program provides you with the opportunity to network with other colleagues throughout the nation who have similar career goals. This MAE in Reading PK-12 Program prepares educators for professional certification with a Reading PK-12 endorsement in the state of Nebraska. Students pursuing certification in other states must check with their State Department of Education for certification requirements. Program: Reading PK-12 Science/Math Education The Master of Science in Education: Science/Math Education is a 36 credit hour program designed for science and math teachers in grades 7 through 12 who are interested in becoming better teachers. Students may choose their 12 credit hour major emphases from either biology, chemistry, math or physical science/physics. All coursework is available online and includes both content and pedagogy. Degree: Master of Science in Education Program: Science/Math Education Prerequisities: Bachelor s degree with an endorsement in biology, math, chemistry, physics or physical science and teaching certificate Contact: Dr. Christopher Exstrom Chemistry msedsci@unk.edu or exstromc@unk.edu Phone: Spanish Education The MAE in Spanish Education is designed for K-12 Spanish teachers who would like to continue their education through the study of an online graduate degree in Spanish education. The program consists of 18 hours of Spanish coursework and 18 hours of education-related coursework primarily focused on second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy. Students will have the option of either completing a 6-hour thesis or combining Spanish courses with summer study abroad options. This graduate program is unique because it is one of the few online programs in the country that focuses on Spanish education. The online format along with potential study abroad options enable students to conveniently focus on both their Spanish proficiency as well as their knowledge of foreign and second language pedagogy. The MAE in Spanish Education would enable graduates to pursue additional career opportunities teaching Spanish at a community college or serve as lecturers and/or adjuncts at colleges and universities. It would also enable graduates to pursue doctoral programs in education. It should be noted that this degree is not designed for students who are interested in obtaining a doctoral degree in Spanish. Program: Special Education: Advanced Practitioner in Special Education Special Education: Gifted Education The Master of Arts in Education: Special Education - Gifted Education degree is designed for teachers who currently hold an undergraduate degree in education and would like to further their education. It is also designed to prepare educators with the knowledge base and competencies necessary for the appropriate education of gifted and talented learners. Program: Special Education: Gifted Education Nebraska teachers are required to complete Introduction to Exceptionalities or equivalent at either the undergraduate (TESE 421) or graduate (TESE 821P) level, if they have not already met this 3 credit hour special education requirement. Special Education K-6 Endorsement The Special Education K-6 Endorsement is designed for teachers who do not presently have an endorsement in Special Education. This program meets the certification requirements in the state of Nebraska. The program is designed to prepare practitioners for careers in student affairs at community colleges, public and private colleges, and universities in the areas of advising, student activities, admissions, residence life, and financial aid. Courses are offered online at the graduate level. Counseling & School Psychology johnsonnm@unk.edu Phone: Transitional Certification Program The Transitional Certification program is designed for those individuals who already have a B.A. or B.S. degree who presently qualify for initial certification in Nebraska. You may be a recent college graduate or a mid-career professional who is eager to become a teacher but have personal or professional commitments which make it impossible to attend on-campus college classes. This program consists of 18 credit hours of online teacher education coursework and 6 credit hours of student teaching. The three 6-credit hour courses may be completed online while the supervised field experiences and student teaching are completed in your community. If an academic review of transcripts indicates a deficiency in the content area in which you are seeking certification, additional coursework may be required. Students who meet the qualifications to start the Transitional Certification Program are also eligible to be hired by a Nebraska public school to start teaching in their endorsement area. Degree Level: Non-degree program (or may be used as a concentration area in the Curriculum & Instruction Master s degree program) Credit Hours: Minimum of 24 credit hours (will vary depending on previous coursework completed) Prerequisites: A Bachelor s degree is required: you must have proof of registration for the Praxis Core exam (if you haven t already completed it with passing scores) prior to enrolling in the first course.
