Agneessens Teaching method(s) Lecture, Study Group Advanced Network Analysis consists of three parts: - A general introduction to the course including a brief summary of Social Networks and Organization (Bachelor 3; premasterclass) focusing on the technical aspects of social network analysis and basic network theory. - An introduction to two or three advanced network related topics. In recent years the topics were Measurement of Social Capital, Consequences of Social Network Positions, Antecedents of Networks, Network dynamics, and Actor-based Network Models. The content of the networks were often advice, friendship, conflict, on-line relationships, etc. - A computer practice UCINET (a social network analysis package) during which relatively simple network measures are calculated, but during which also an introduction to an advanced type of analysis is given, namely QAP regression. lectures and tutorials. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - - M Social Research (research) Pagina 13 van 84

19 During this course a number (2-3) of small papers will have to be prepared, each on a different topic. In it students have to discuss the relevant theory, apply an appropriate network technique and discuss their results. Active participation during the discussions is compulsory. If space and time allows, this course ends with a presentation of ones own paper, and a review of one or two papers made by fellow students. In order to pass, all assignments need to be completed in time and in a satisfactory manner A selection of books and/or articles are compulsory readings The exact list will be communicated via blackboard. Entry requirements Basic knowledge of social network analysis (as taught in B&O bachelor or BCO premaster) It is obligatory to; sign up; for a course, for more information on dates to sign up; go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. The number of students in this seminar is limited: there will be room for 60 students. Master students BCO do have right of precedence. Advanced Strategic Management Course code SASM_O (701732) Period FSW Period 1 Credits 5.0 dr. F. den Hond Teaching staff dr. F. den Hond, dr. P.C. van der Sijde, dr. J. Riese Teaching method(s) Lecture, Study Group The aim of the course is to help students acquire in- depth knowledge of the resource- based view in strategic management. The focus in the course is on (a) the theoretical and conceptual evolution of the resource- based view and (b) the operationalization and measurement of key concepts in empirical research. Students who successfully finish the course will have state- of- the- art knowledge of the resourcebased view and will be able to assess the scientific quality of papers contributing to the resource- based view. The resource- based view (RBV) has become one of the leading perspectives in strategic management. This prominent position is related to the new insights the RBV offers in addressing the central issue of why and how firms gain competitive advantage. The contributions of the RBV to understanding competitive advantage can easily be identified in a wide range of relevant topics in strategic management, such as: diversification, strategic alliances, outsourcing, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - - M Social Research (research) Pagina 14 van 84

20 entrepreneurship, management of innovation, human resource management, and knowledge management. The RBV's theoretical development not only has been valued highly, but also severely criticized. Key concepts appear to be very difficult to operationalize and measure. Concepts such as intangible assets, inimitable capabilities, and causal ambiguity, play an important role in the reasoning of why particular capabilities will lead to a sustainable competitive advantage. Discussions about the methods of analysis and the validity of the empirical results, as well as the implications for theory development will be important ingredients in this seminar. Tutorial. A selection of recently published articles (electronically available from the university library) are required readings. Additional articles need to be used in the essays. Master students. It is obligatory to sign up for a course, for more information on dates to sign up, go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. Please note: this course is not taught during the academisch year Only a clean sweep test is provided. Being Professional and Accountable, Annual Seminar in Strategy Course code SBPA-ASS_O (701751) Period FSW Period 2 Credits 5.0 dr. J.C. Teelken Teaching staff dr. F. den Hond, dr. J.C. Teelken Teaching method(s) Lecture, Study Group Knowledge. - Students develop a broad understanding of what is meant by being 'professional' and of the position of professionals in organizations, notably in relation to increased calls for 'accountability' through 'technologies of governance'. Capabilities. - The course helps students to connect abstract theory to daily practices in organizational life, by digesting relevant literature, by empirically exploring origins and consequences of 'technologies of governance' in organizations, and by reporting on their findings. Attitude. - This seminar intends to develop relevant skills and attitudes for students as future professional, since they will have to deal with an Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - - M Social Research (research) Pagina 15 van 84

21 increased pressure on (quantitative) accountability. This occurs first by raising the awareness of the existence of various problematic situations, second by stimulating them to explore the antecedents and consequences of such situations, and third by stimulating them to reflect on their own perspective in such problematic circumstances. While the term professional is omnipresent, few people apprehend what being a professional actually involves. As many students are likely to find employment as a 'professional' in public or private organizations, this seminar can provide them with some fundamental insights. Being a professional entails particular responsibilities relating to the use of expert knowledge for the benefit of the organization and the organization's clients. In this seminar, students explore the role and position of professionals in organizations, particularly in relation to the theme of accountability. However, calls to increased accountability in both public and private organizations most often subsume some form of quantification, thereby rendering accountability into a technology of governance, potentially affecting the actual nature of the work of professionals. The course comprises (guest) lectures and tutorials. Testamur based on participation in the seminars (obligatory), an interview transcript, and a term paper. Students in the Research Master program have additional assignments. In order to pass, all assignments need to be completed in time and in a satisfactory manner. The final grading depends for 100% on the term paper. A selection of books and articles- please refer to the study guide for an updated list are compulsory readings, including Michael Power's 'The audit society' (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1997). Students are expected to find additional relevant literature for the term paper. The course is an elective in the Master program 'BCO' in the of Social Sciences at the VU University Amsterdam and in the 's Master in Social Research program. The course is open to interested students from other programs, including organization theory, organizational anthropology, political science and public administration, depending on the number of places available. It is obligatory to sign up for a course, for more information on dates to sign up, go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. 22 Credits 5.0 dr. J. Riese Teaching staff dr. J. Riese, J.J. Wolbers MSc Teaching method(s) Lecture, Study Group In this seminar students develop knowledge and insight in issues of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and learn to apply these insights on empirical data. This is laid out in the following learning objectives: - students have an insight in the development of CSR; - student can reproduce knowledge on different theoretical perspectives on CSR; - student can independently retrieve, apply and present relevant scientific literature and further information; - based on their theoretical framework, student can analyse empirical cases on CSR; - students demonstrate to be able to report and present their work in a clear way. This seminar will consist of several lectures and tutorials. In CSR, responsibilities of companies opposite society and the way these are organised are emphasised. This means that this relation has strategic, organizational and communicative implications. Examples of themes to be addressed include issues such as stakeholder management, reputational effects, measuring corporate social performance, NGO influence, or supply chain management. In this seminar several theoretical perspectives are introduced to guide students in a theoretically grounded analysis of CSR within an industry, based on a combination of group work and individual work. Lecture and tutorial. testamur based on several assignments. A.H. van Marrewijk Teaching method(s) Lecture Important goals in this module are: - Being able to connect theories on organizational and cultural change and intervention with acquired knowledge on organisation. - Being able to develop a plan for the analysis of a concrete problem of cultural change and formulate proposals for intervention. The seminar culture change and intervention discusses recent academic theories and change prescriptions. The focus is on traditions of 'planned change' as well as on process oriented concepts and methodologies of organizational development. During the seminar themes, such as participative change, group dynamics and decline management are discussed. The intervention part focuses on dominant cultural strategies as aggressive, corrosive, indoctrinative and conciliative (Bate, 2002) and negotiation strategies that deals with power arena, actors, and the results of cultural change. The seminar reflects on intervention strategies and their consequences for management, efficiency and effectiveness of (inter)national organisational networks. Lectures and discussion groups (50%- 50%). Weekly lectures discuss most important strategies of organizational change and intervention. Students will prepare and discuss three assignments. Furthermore, a culture intervention simulation programme will be used. Testamur based upon the assignments and a final exam. Students have to hand in all assignments and have to participate the intervention simulation programme before permitted for the final exam. The mark for the final exam determines the final mark. * Reader Cultural change and Intervention. * Additional literature will be announced. Obligatory course for students in the Master s in Social Research Anthropology track. Ethics and Integrity of Governance Course code SEIG_O (701729) Period FSW Period 1 Credits 5.0 dr. G. de Graaf The aim of this seminar is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of theories and research addressing organizational ethics and integrity, to practice writing a paper which actually contributes to the research in this field and to stimulate reflection on the ethical aspects of research and research groups. First, theory and central concepts will be introduced and related to the emergence of the concern for ethical and integrity issues in Western societies. Second, empirical research representing the state of the art of our knowledge on the extent and character of the problem of organizational integrity (violations) will be discussed. This will include the issue of integrity in academic research. The third topic will be integrity management including the importance of leadership. Fourthly the specific character of the integrity of government organizations and business corporations (with special attention for corporate social responsibility) will be reviewed. To conclude, a number of unintended and unwanted effects of the `ethics and integrity industry' will be examined. Participants will follow (about half) of the classes of the regular Master course "Ethiek van Besturen". Next to that, there are classes by the lecturer on how to do research on ethics in organizations. Students will participate in the research group Integrity of Governance. Field Research Anthroplogy track Course code SFRANT_O (702720) Period Semester 1 Credits 30.0 drs. B.G. Keuper Students gain experience in doing anthropological field research, which will form the empirical base of their Master's thesis. Anthropologists distinguish themselves from other social scientists through the emphasis they put on field research as their most important method of data collection. During their field research, students collect the empirical data that will form the core of their Master's thesis. They will experiment with various techniques of data collection such as participant observation, interviews, and locally available data sets. Being away from their `normal, daily lives and environments, students also gain experience with different life- and communication styles, ways of dealing with local authorities and bureaucracies, culture shock, moral dilemmas, et cetera. During their field research, they regularly report to their supervisors, keep good records of their experiences in the form of research notes and a diary. A strict deadline for the return is maintained in order to ensure that sufficient time is left for writing up the Master's thesis. Practical. Supervision at a distance through the best possible communication means. If possible, a local supervisor will be appointed for face- to- face guidance and feedback. Field Research Design Course code SFRD_O (702715) Period Semester 1 Credits 10.0 dr. M.E.M. de Theije Teaching staff dr. L.A. Brouwer Teaching method(s) Study Group Students write a full- fledged research plan and make the practical arrangements for their fieldwork. It helps students to develop their own research topic by pursuing their theoretical, thematic and geographical interests, in relation to the central theme of our Master s programme, Human Security. In order to optimize supervision, students are encouraged to participate in or relate to the research projects or specializations of staff members. Field Research Design (FRD) is divided into two parts. During the first eight weeks, students work on the so- called explorative paper. They select their research subject, region of interest, and carry out a bibliographic search. In this process they gradually narrow down their range of research interests, thematically, geographically, and theoretically. In part two, students develop an analytical research question, informed by their literature search during the first part of FRD, and by the literature studied for the seminar "Theoretical Orientation on Human Security". They also continue their bibliographic search and make the necessary arrangements for their fieldwork. At the end of FRD, students will have written a full- fledged research proposal that shows they have a firm idea, grounded in a grasp of the literature, about the theme and geographic region where they like to carry out their field research. A research proposal (no more than 8, 000 words) includes: - a focused and well- argued research question; - a critical discussion of relevant literature about the theme and region of choice; - an operationalisation of the research question; - a short description of the intended research methods; - a brief reflection on research ethics pertaining to the intended research; - a small report of practical preparations for fieldwork; - an expanded annotated bibliography on the topic and geographic area of twenty- five titles (five titles can be used from the course Theoretical Orientation on Human Security). Testamur based on - an exploratorive paper with an annotated bibliography of fifteen titles at the end of October (full-time students) or end of February (part-time students). A pass must be achieved. - A research proposal with an annotated bibliography of twenty-five titles to be presented at a 'mini-conference' at the end of the course. This proposal will be graded. Presence and participation are required. Will be announced later. Regarding the research proposal: to be developed by students in their bibliographic research. Global Religion and Local Diversity Course code SGRLD_O (706721) Period FSW Period 1 Credits 5.0 dr. E. Sengers Teaching staff dr. E. Sengers Teaching method(s) Lecture Students are able to describe and interpret the role of religion and religious institutions in global society. More specifically, they have knowledge about 1. the study of religion from sociological perspective, 2. the (changing) role of religion in processes of globalization, 3. selected themes and case studies. While classical sociologists expected religion to lose influence in modern society, this expectation has been challenged by among other things the continued popularity of churchgoing in the United States, the surge of fundamentalist movements and Islamic parties in the Muslim world, the evangelical revival sweeping through Latin America, and the widespread ethno- religious conflicts in international affairs. Religion is a source of both social conflict and social cohesion in the contemporary world. This course analyzes the role of religion in global society and the influence of processes of globalization on religion. Nolke The aim of this seminar is: to reflect on the transition from fieldwork data to a written, academic text; to refine the writing skills of the students; and, to guide the students through the process of writing the Master's thesis. The seminar helps students complete their thesis before the deadline in June Topics include: fieldwork experience and the culture shock of coming home in case of fieldwork abroad; the usefulness of a research question; how to translate fieldwork data into an academic text; the use of theoretical literature beyond mere lip-service; ethical dilemmas of ethnographic writing; and rhetorical strategies. The seminar/tutorial supplements the guidance by individual supervisors, but does not replace it. Working together in a seminar helps keep spirits up on the lonely path of writing. Identity and Diversity in Organizations COM Research Domain Course code SIDO-CRD_O (703714) Period Semester 1 Credits 15.0 prof. dr. H. Ghorashi Teaching staff dr. M.J. Spierenburg, prof. dr. H. Ghorashi Teaching method(s) Lecture, Study Group The goal of this course is to provide students with the analytical instruments to analyze and asses 'what is going on' in organizational settings. Identity and diversity, as reflections of societal developments, are at work, be it in preventing people from full participation or enabling them to unfold their full potential. Themes addressed are: what is influencing current organizational life from 'society'? What is happening on the individual level? What is the benefit of recurrent change? And what are the downsides of ongoing managerial performance? Why are some (groups of) people more successful than others? What would happen if organizational culture were less monolithic? The aim of the seminar is thus, to increase the reflective capacity of students in grasping their own positioning in the era of what Bauman (200) refers to as 'late modern condition', next to the consequences of this positioning for the processes of inclusion and exclusion inside and outside organizations The course provides insights and overviews, detailed and wide perspectives on the broad theme of diversity in organizations contextualized by globalization, an ongoing urge for change and loss of reliance in current 'postmodern' society.
