1 LWI One-Day Workshop University of San Diego School of Law Speaker and Moderator Biographies 1) Alastair Agcaoili: Professor Agcaoili teaches courses in legal writing and research at the University of San Diego School of Law. His current research focuses on the fields of international human rights law, federal jurisdiction, and civil procedure. Professor Agcaoili clerked for the Honorable J. Clifford Wallace of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Diego and the Honorable Kimba M. Wood of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Before that he was a trial and appellate litigator practicing with Caldwell Leslie & Proctor PC in Los Angeles and Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York and London, where he handled international commercial litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and intellectual property disputes. He joined USD School of Law in ) Cindy Archer: Cindy Archer is the Director of Lawyering Skills at Loyola, as well as the Director for Concentration Programs and a Clinical Professor of Law. She has been a member of the Loyola law School faculty since In addition to teaching, Professor Archer helps to develop exercises and simulations with faculty, mentors younger faculty, and coordinates many of the adjunct faculty members. Professor Archer developed her love for skills training as a law student at Georgetown where she served as a teaching fellow in the Legal Research and Writing Program there, and as a moot court team coach. After law school, she honed her own professional skills as a business litigation associate with large law firms in Los Angeles and Detroit. She spent seven years practicing with Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton (Orange County) specializing in commercial transactions, employment law, and insurance. She is an active participant in the regional and national Legal Writing Community and has presented at regional conferences for faculty and practitioners. 3) Linda Barris: Linda Barris has taught LRW for the last 14 years, in California, Florida, and Kentucky. Professor Barris currently teaches Lawyering Process at Florida Coastal School of Law. She received her law degree from the University of San Diego in 1992 and practiced in San Diego for five years before moving into teaching. She is the author of Understanding and Mastering The Bluebook and the new Understanding and Mastering the Bluebook Student Workbook. 4) Anne Beaumont: 5) Linda Beresford: Linda Beresford is a part-time professor at the University of San Diego School of Law. This semester she is teaching Legal Writing & Research III: Litigation and Judicial Drafting, an upper division legal writing course focusing on motion practice and opinion writing. She also is a partner with Opper & Varco LLP, where she practices environmental law, specializing in the acquisition, sale and cleanup of contaminated properties, which includes an active civil litigation practice in both state and federal court. She joined USD School of Law in 2011.

2 6) Lisa Cannon: Professor Cannon came to the University of San Diego School of Law in 2005 after working as a business litigator at the Latham & Watkins San Diego office. She served as interim director of the Lawyering Skills I program in and then as the first rotating Department Chair in She has previously presented her work at the Rocky Mountain Legal Writing Conference and serves as an assistant editor for the Journal of the Legal Writing Institute. Professor Cannon graduated from Harvard University with an A.B. in History and Literature and received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. She teaches courses in legal writing and research. 7) Kathryn Fehrman: Professor Fehrman is a Legal Skills Professor at California Western School of Law in San Diego. She was Deputy Director of the State of Michigan s Department of Human Services, and served as the Director of the Bay County Michigan Public Defender s Office. She is an Editorial Board Member of the Michigan Child Welfare Law Journal, and former Chair of the State Bar of Michigan Children's Law Section. Professor Fehrman has taught theater, communication, legal skills, civil litigation, and criminal justice. She studied voice at the New England Conservatory, and theatre at the National Theater Institute and Hartman Theater Conservatory. She performed in theaters throughout the United States before becoming an attorney. Professor Fehrman began her legal career as an officer in the US Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG). She moved to civil litigation and appeals, representing businesses in real estate, energy, and contract cases at Luce Forward (now McKenna Long) San Diego, continuing Naval Reserve duties as a Military Magistrate. Following a move to Michigan, Professor Fehrman continued to practice business, real estate, and government law. She became deeply involved in children's law and policy. She served on various Michigan Supreme Court task forces. Before being appointed to the Michigan Department of Human Services, Professor Fehrman was a member of two gubernatorial transition teams. She was also member of the Governor's Finance Committee and Task Force on Children's Justice. 8) Heather Zuber-Harshman: Heather Zuber-Harshman was a civil litigator in Southern California for seven years prior to becoming a full-time professor. She has served as a Director of Academic Success and a Director of Legal Writing. She is currently a legal writing professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego and a freelance writer. She has presented at numerous regional and national conferences and workshops. 9) Tim Irving: Tim is an attorney with more than 25 years of complex litigation experience in state and federal courts throughout the country. His practice focuses on professional liability claims and insurance coverage disputes, including the defense of insurance bad faith claims. He also has extensive commercial litigation experience in consumer class actions, civil rights cases and federal False Claims Act litigation. Tim holds an AV Peer Review Rating from the Martindale-Hubbell directory of lawyers. 10) Christine Kelton: Professor Kelton has been a member of the Institute for Legal Writing and Professional Skills at Whittier Law School since Currently, Professor Kelton teaches an upper level writing course, Professional Skills II, to third year and fourth year students focusing on advanced legal writing skills, including legal analysis, fact

3 gathering, problem solving, tactical strategies, and ethical considerations. In addition to Professional Skills II, Professor Kelton has taught other classes offered through the Institute for Legal Writing and Professional Skills, including Legal Skills I and II and Professional Skills I. Prior to joining the faculty at Whittier Law School, Professor Kelton practiced law in Los Angeles and Orange County. Professor Kelton began her career as a trial lawyer in both the Los Angeles and Orange County Public Defender s Offices. In addition, she has extensive civil litigation and administrative law experience, specializing in defending mental health professionals. Professor Kelton is licensed by the State Bar of California, and is a member of the American Bar Association, the Orange County Bar Association, the Orange County Women Lawyer s Association, and the Legal Writing Institute. 11) Michael Koby: Michael Koby joined the faculty of Washington University School of Law in He teaches Legal Practice I and II, Introduction to U.S. Law and Method (for LL.M. students), Lawyering Practice Externship, and Religion and the Constitution. He also directs the school s Trial and Advocacy program. 12) Adrianna Kripke: Adrianna Kripke joined the Environmental Law Department at San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) as Senior Counsel in She provides strategic advice and risk management on air quality, climate change, and water quality issues and represents SDG&E before agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, California Air Resources Board, and State Water Resources Control Board. From 2005 through 2011, Ms. Kripke practiced law as an associate in the Environment, Land & Resources Department at Latham & Watkins LLP in San Diego. Ms. Kripke received her undergraduate degree magna cum laude in Biology from Harvard University in She received her law degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2005, with a certificate of specialization in environmental law. 13) Jane Larrington: Jane Larrington is a Reference Librarian at the University of San Diego Legal Research Center, providing research and reference services to faculty, students, and other library patrons. She regularly presents training sessions on a variety of legal research topics and co-teaches intermediate and advanced legal research courses. Prior to arriving at USD, Ms. Larrington was a Reference Librarian and Adjunct Professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law where she taught Advanced Legal Research and provided research and reference services. Before joining TJSL, Ms. Larrington was a Fellow at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law Library. She previously worked for several years as a Staff Attorney for the Southwest Center for Law and Policy in Tucson, Arizona where she trained judges, prosecutors, family law attorneys, lay legal advocates, police officers, and victim advocates on civil and criminal issues related to violence against Indian women. Ms. Larrington also worked as a Staff Attorney for the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence. She earned her M.L.I.S. at the University of Arizona, her J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School, and her B.A. at Carleton College. 14) Chris Latham: The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recently appointed Mr. Latham to serve as a judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern

4 District of California. He will begin his term on October 1, Mr. Latham is currently an assistant U.S. attorney in San Diego, where he has worked since 2008, representing the federal government, its agencies and officers in a range of civil matters. Before entering public service, Mr. Latham worked as an attorney at the law firm of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP from 1993 to While in private practice, he served as a judge pro tem of the San Diego Superior Court for a decade. Additionally, Mr. Latham regularly provided pro bono service to indigent clients. He served on the board of directors of the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program from 2003 to 2007, and he received eight Wiley W. Manuel Pro Bono Awards for Legal Services from the State Bar of California. Mr. Latham received his B.A. from the University of California at Irvine in 1986, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. He earned a master of philosophy degree from Yale University in 1989, and a J.D. in 1992 from Yale Law School. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable Earl B. Gilliam of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. 15) Judith Lihosit: Judith Lihosit is the Head of Reference Services at the University of San Diego Legal Research Center. She holds a J.D. from the USD School of Law, and an M.L.I.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to entering library school, she was an attorney for the Department of the Navy s Office of General Counsel, practicing in the area of government contracts, employment law, and environmental law. She regularly co-teaches Advanced Legal Research and Legal Research Bootcamp at the USD School of Law. 16) Cara Mitnick: Cara Mitnick is the Assistant Dean for Career Services at the University of San Diego School of Law. She graduated from Northwestern University School of Law and worked for almost a decade in the tax group at Jones Day LLP in New York City. While there, she was actively involved in the firm s recruiting efforts. More recently, she served as director of the Career Services office at California Western School of Law in San Diego. Dean Mitnick s many years of practice and counseling as well as her experience as a research analyst for the House Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C., have provided her with valuable insights into the legal market that are indispensable for students. 17) Eunice Park: Professor Park teaches Legal Writing and Research at Western State College of Law in Fullerton, CA, where she is the Assistant Director of the LWR Department. Professor Park also has taught Legal Skills and Professional Responsibility Practicum Skills/Interviewing, Counseling, and Negotiation classes at Whittier School of Law prior to teaching at Western State. 18) Jason Potter: Professor Potter teaches courses in legal writing and research at the University of San Diego School of Law. Prior to that position, Professor Potter clerked for Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union and was a summer associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP. He was later associated with Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in Los Angeles. He was a C.V. Starr Lecturer of Law at Peking University School of Transnational Law in Shenzhen, China, where he taught legal

5 discourse for two years. Professor Potter is an active member of the State Bar of California. He joined USD School of Law in ) Anna Russell: Anna Russell has been a Reference and Electronic Resources librarian at the University of San Diego School of Law since Before working at USD, she spent six years working for the federal government. She constantly stays abreast of current information technology trends and investigates the ever-changing world of legal online databases. In addition to her duties as the Electronic Resources Librarian, Ms. Russell provides legal research instruction to USD law students on both advanced legal research topics and in the first year legal writing and research courses. She is one of five legal research reference librarians at USD who complete research projects for faculty and assist law library patrons with research questions on a regular basis. 20) Rebecca Scharf: Professor Scharf teaches Family Law, Legal Research and Writing, and Privacy, Publicity & Defamation at the Boyd School of Law (UNLV). She earned her J.D. in 1991 from Harvard Law School, where she served as an editor on the Journal on Legislation. Prior to coming to the Boyd School of Law, Professor Scharf worked as a senior attorney with the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (formerly known as the Welfare Law Center) in New York City, where she conducted class action impact litigation throughout the United States, primarily in the area of public benefits law. While there, she won the coveted Association of the Bar of the City of New York Civil Legal Services Award for her work promoting economic and social justice through the law. Before working for the National Center for Law and Economic Justice, she worked as an attorney for the Legal Aid Society of New York City, providing legal services to impoverished families in the South Bronx. She has published articles in the areas of legal writing and welfare reform.
