15 EXPLORING COLOUR Colour can be used in several ways for the windows, doors and extensions in your home. We ve all seen the decades of beautiful properties ruined by bulky white windows or the equally dated conservatories of the last century. All our ranges, either PVCu, aluminium or timber are available in a range of colours that transform a home. That transformation can either be as a bold, modern twist such as anthracite grey on a white house and that s not to say white wouldn t work - the style of fenestration can equally be used to harmonise rather than contrast. Colour can be subtle, colour can be bold - whichever colour you choose WILL make a statement!...contrast or harmony...? We d love to hear from you, call us on SOLUTIONS IN GLASS 15

16 impose style...bold or subtle...add or retain character... Visit us today at 16

17 EXPLORING COLOUR Curbside appeal Whether it s the traditional heritage colours of the British urban landscape such as Royal Blue, Pillarbox Red or Chartwell Green we retain originality. For the more anonymous property without a clearly defined period the choice is far greater - inspiration could come from the art deco boulevards of Miami or to the hills of Tuscany! Drop by our showrooms today and have a look at the choices... We d love to hear from you, call us on SOLUTIONS IN GLASS 17

23 History We manufactured this window system for 16 years until such time that we couldn t keep up with the demand from our domestic and commercial customers. We KNOW this system very well and have long term experience of it s low maintenance, security and longevity. REHAU are the largest manufacturer of PVCu profiles in the world and utilise the best German engineering as the basis for our Energy A+ window. Coupled with the hightechnology glass units from Saint Gobain - the oldest glass manufacturer in the world. 24 A Period Solution! PVC-U A typical 1920 s Art Deco home which would have had curved, glazed bays - very expensive to replace today but a striking sloution was found using an angled 5-light bay and horizontal astragal bars echo the original period of this house. Visit us today at Look at the difference between the windows in the middle of the picture - elegant 6-light square bays, equal sightlines and ovolo beads and sashes make for a stunning facade. The windows on the neighbouring properties are made to look very dated and unsightly. 24

27 ENERGY A slimsash designed for the UK, made in the UK PVC-U 6-CHAMBER SASH & FRAME 100% LEAD FREE PVCu Completely free of poisonous lead stabilisers. NEW slimsash PROFILE Slimmer sash allows an extra 12mm of glass around the window, increasing your view from inside, allowing more light from outside and making even more use of the energy glazing. CHAMFERED PROFILE A choice of either a modern chamfered profile (shown) or a more traditional Ovolo profile (see inset picture). CHOICE OF FINISHES A selection of standard colours or an extensive range of pre-finished foils are available. OVOLO PROFILE A section through our Ovolo-profile window as opposed to the Chamfered profile window shown above. GLOSS FINISH Polished finish reduces cleaning and maintenance and retains a cleaner look for longer helping resist airborne pollutants and moulds. HIGH TECHNOLOGY High-tech 6-chamber design intelligently uses structural PVCu for high strength in both the sash and the frame. We d love to hear from you, call us on SOLUTIONS IN GLASS 27

28 PVC-U Being Individual! New-build properties look very striking with Anthracite Grey even when trqditional building materials and designs are employed. Dynamic rather than ostentatious. Visit us today at 28

29 ENERGY A slimsash slim appearance yet high performance PVC-U HOW slimsash COMPARES... INCREASED GLASS AREA Standard Window slimsash The greater glass area that results from the slimmer frame is clearly visible in the images above - this makes for a slimmer aesthetic, more light transmission into your home and a marginally less ostructed view of the outside from in your home. Sculptured More suited to a period property, the sculptured beads emulate the decorative timber beads on properties of the last 200 years. Chamfered Although still seen on period properties, the sharper lines of the chamfered bead are suited to more contemporary homes. We d love to hear from you, call us on SOLUTIONS IN GLASS 29

30 PVC-U Visit us today at You can of course change the original aesthetics of the original build of your home - Cheam slimsash uses a slimmer opener (referred to as a sash) to give a slimmer outline and an increased glass area. We use what we refer to as slim-sash technology to produce windows with less bulky PVCu frames that increase the glass area available. This means more light from outside and a better view from inside. We offer a range of stylish double glazed, energy efficient windows to improve the aesthetics, the energy-saving and security of your home. Using a unique polishing process and a unique PVCu compound, we can guarantee a smooth, polished surface for a window that will never rot or warp nor require painting. Consequently, the greater the glass area is, the more you benefit from our high-technology glass. Our windows are A+ Rated for energy efficiency as standard a far higher specification than Building Regulations require today. 30

31 ENERGY A slimsash slim appearance yet high performance PVC-U Note the larger glass area and slimmer frames as we compare slimsash against a typical standard PVCu installation on the left. A nice example of a slimsash equal-sightline installation flanked by older unequal sightline windows - the slimsash look beautifully clean and symmetrical. We d love to hear from you, call us on SOLUTIONS IN GLASS 31

32 PVC-U THE NEXT-GENERATION WINDOW The new range of flushsash windows and doors bring back the traditional timber appearance where the sashes fit flush into the frame - the traditional method of producing a timber window in Britain for over 200 years. The difference with our flushsash range is that they re made from PVCu and NOT timber. This means low maintenance, excellent levels of sound and heat insulation and modern, easy to use hardware. 75 RESIDENCE 9 the style of traditional timber windows in a modern material COMPOSITE PVC-U Residence 9 is a modern window system designed to replicate the 19th Century Flush Sash Timber Window The Residence 9 is the first modern window to be accepted in some of the more traditional Conservation Areas, thanks largely to it s faithful interpretation of timber frames, joints, beads and hardware spanning the last two centuries. It s manufacture from composite materials ensure a virtually maintenance-free finish. Not only does the Residence 9 succeed on it s aesthetic qualities, it also offers the highest levels of thermal and acoustic insulation. It can even accomodate genuine high-performance 44mm triple-glazing when the extremes of performance are required. The windows photographed for this brochure were all designed and installed by Cheam Windows. Designed, made and hand-finished by craftsmen. Call us on

76 COMPOSITE PVC-U HANDLES You can personalise your Residence 9 windows with a choice of handles. The Monkey-tail and Tear-drop designs were popular designs of bygone times. The finish emulates a rough-cast apperance to create a period feel to the finished windows. the keys are exquisite, quite unlike anything we ve seen before Scribed beads, not mitred Visit us today at Hand-made butt joints 76

77 GEORGIAN BAR COMPOSITE PVC-U Our bespoke sections are hand applied by craftsmen to create the traditional Georgian latticework found in period townhouses. The mouldings replicate the deep decorative detailing inside and the chamfered putty line outside. Georgian architecture is the name given to the set styles used between 1720 and It is eponymous for the four monarchs, George I - IV who reigned during this period. Revived in the early 20th century and referred to as Neo-Georgian. Georgian designs usually lay within the Classical orders of architecture with decorative styles derived from ancient Rome or Greece. Georgian style is characterised by mathematical proportion, uniformity and symmetrics. TRADITIONAL JOINTS Timber windows were always constructed using a square butt joint. Residence 9 uses the same style of jointing - no use of welded, chamfered (cut at 45 degrees) corners as with modern PVC and aluminium windows. This diagonal joint was never traditional. ELEGANT REBATES Residence 9 is designed with an easy-clean rebate which is finished to match the rest of the window. The design avoids sharp corners and undercuts which attract dirt. When you open the window, it not only looks the same but it is easy to wipe down and clean. This is a feature that is not immediately apparent in the first few years of ownership, but you will look at windows differently when they re open now and appreciate the levels of detail we ve gone to! 82 COMPOSITE Continuous woodgrain throughout Modern handles Proportions of the glazing bars dramatically changes the aesthetics of a typical window CHANGE OF PERIOD The addition or removal of Georgian windows totally changes the style and period of the fenestration - the use of a rather contemporary Painswick grey blurs that difference even further. Visit us today at SILVERED OAK As we go back further in time, the British timber windows of the 17th Century would have been made from oak, there were no real treatments for the timber itself so weathering over the years created a silvered effect on the windows. We ve managed to recreate this apperance which in spite of it s history, makes for as much a stunning contemporary window as it does a period window. 82

83 COMPOSITE Corner post for a splayed bay features a simpler fluted design (classic drip rail shown too) Discreet face-drainage BAYS AND CORNERPOSTS Corner post for a square bay features a stunning fluted design Period houses often had bay windows. There were Grand Entrances to the front and Garden Rooms to the rear. You can authentically recreate these cornerposts and joints with your Residence 9 installation. If your house is from the 1930 s, then we can recreate your period bay windows. Our detailing is authentic. FLUSH SASH Traditional timber windows, particularly of the 19th Century, had a flush-fitting sash whereby the opening part (sash) sat within the frame of the window. Compare this neat and elegant design with the protruding sashes of many modern windows. To extend this aesthetic further, we use a dummy sash for non-opening parts of the window to retain a symmetric form to the entire window, this is often referred to as equal sight-lines. 98 ALUMINIUM Visit us today at There are many window and door systems on the market in the UK, the most prevalent being PVCu. Why would you choose Aluminium rather than PVCu or Timber? Quite possibly the most significant reason for choosing Aluminium is it s inherent strength. Aluminium is a very rigid material in terms of it taking an enormous amount of pressure to bend it, but also it s vertical weight bearing ability. PVCu systems require steel strengthening inserts inside the window (or door) to achieve the same strength. Our typical UK home across the last two hundred years doesn t have particularly large windows in the first place which reduces the amount of natural daylight entering. The strength of Aluminium allows the window frame and sash to be designed and manufactured far slimmer than their PVCu and Timber counterparts. This allows a greater glass area and consequently allows more light to enter. The added bonus is that the greater the glass area means the greater benefits can be gained from high-tech, energy saving glass. Aluminium will not rust, nor will it warp or rot. It is available in a wide spectrum of colours and finishes, even textured woodgrains. Aluminium can emulate a wide range of architectural styles, from leaded-light, blackframed windows on a Tudor property, Georgian sash windows with astragal, steel framed Crittal windows of the early 20th century right up to modern expansive picture windows and bi-folding doors of this century. Aluminium offers a window and door solution for most requirements and are increasingly acceptable within many conservation areas throughout the UK. 98

136 TECHNOLOGY Visit us today at Our Integral Window Blind product line comprises three blind models: venetian, pleated and roller blind. The venetian blind is produced with aluminium slats in a wide colour range, available in two different slat widths (12.5 and 16mm). The pleated and roller blinds are realized using Verosol fabrics comprising a special aluminium layer on one side of the fabric that significantly improves heat reflection and light regulation. 136

137 INTEGRATED BLINDS privacy with low-maintenance easy operation TECHNOLOGY The blind (venetian, pleated or roller) is encapsulated within two glass panes, e.g. in a double glazing unit. The movement of the blind, for manual or motorised systems, does not compromise the insulating properties of the double glazed unit, and therefore operates in a totally sealed environment. These exclusive characteristics ensure total protection against dirt, dust or weather conditions, and therefore does not require any maintenance. The magnetic components have an almost indefinite life cycle having a loss of magnetic attraction of around 2% per 100 years. Call us on

140 TECHNOLOGY ENERGY RATINGS What Does the Energy Efficient Window Ratings Label Tell You? The BFRC Scheme is the UK s national system for rating the energy efficiency of windows and is recognised within the Building Regulations as a method to show compliance for your replacement windows installation. Window Energy Ratings use a consumer-friendly traffic-light style A-E ratings guide similar to that used on white goods (such as fridges, freezers, washing machines etc ). This ratings label can be used by you to make more informed choices about the energy efficiency of the windows you are looking to purchase. With carbon emissions high on the global agenda and the current high cost of fuel, we are all looking for ways to make our homes more energy efficient. Each window rated by the BFRC has a unique label This label will display the following information: 1. The rating level A, B, C, etc 2. The energy rating eg. -3kWh/(m² K) in this example the product will lose 3 kilowatt hours per square metre per year. 3. The window U value eg. 1.4W/(m² K) 4. The effective heat loss due to air penetration as L eg W/(m² K) 5. The solar heat gain eg. g=0.43 Simply put this will determine how well a product will perform the functions of: * Helping you contain and conserve heat within your building in the winter * Keep out the wind * Resist condensation * Contribute to improved sound insulation So What are Energy Efficient Windows Use Solar Gain to Benefit the Home So exactly what are Energy Efficient Windows? They are windows that help to contain and conserve heat within the home keeping out wind and rain, resisting condensation and yet allowing natural free energy - the warmth of the sun - to heat the home. They can be made using any frame material - aluminium, PVC-U, steel or timber or even a combination of materials. Energy Efficient Windows are easy to recognise - simply look for the BFRC Label. 142 TECHNOLOGY Whichever material you choose for your new windows, its energy-saving ability and control of the sun s heat is all down to one element - the glass! The glass - or glazing unit - can minimise the heat escaping from your home, the cold from entering your home and control the amount of the sun s rays coming in to your home. There are still a lot of single-glazed windows in the UK - over a quarter of the heat generated in these homes is lost through these windows. There are also a lot of older double-glazed windows out there - they are certainly more effective than single-glazing BUT only half as efficient as modern double-glazing - and now there is triple glazing!. All of this technology has been developed to minimise your energy bills. The glass isn t keeping the cold out nor is it keeping the heat in. -5 C OUTDOOR TEMPERATURE 10 C 20 C INNER PANE INDOOR TEMPERATURE DOUBLE GLAZING shown here using two panes of ordinary 4mm glass. The temperature of the room drops off gradually as you get close to the window, therefore your heating won t have to work as hard to retain a comfortable temperature indoors. The glass is keeping a lot the cold out and is keeping a lot the heat in. However, without a special coating on the inner pane of glass, all of the sun s rays travel through the glass to rapidly heat indoors - in some cases this can be beneficial but you don t have any control over this. 142

143 GLASS it s importance, it s use TECHNOLOGY NEW Clear Low-E Glass since 2012 Low E Glass - early 2000 SPECIAL COATINGS The most commonly used term for this is Low-E, whereby the E stands for emissivity. Emissivity in this instance means the amount of heat energy the coating can actually give out. The latest coatings are almost invisible whereas a few years ago they had a noticeable tint to them. Window glass is by it s very nature, highly emissive. To improve thermal efficiency (insulation properties) thin film coatings are applied to the glass. Specially designed coatings are applied to one or more surfaces of insulated glass. These coatings reflect radiant infrared energy, thus tending to keep radiant heat on the same side of the glass from which it originated, while letting visible light pass. This results in more efficient windows because radiant heat originating from indoors in winter is reflected back inside, while infrared heat radiation from the sun during summer is reflected away, keeping it cooler inside. The temperature of the room barely drops off as you get close to the window, therefore your heating will have to work even less to retain a comfortable temperature indoors. The glass is keeping most of the cold out and is keeping most of the heat in. The effect of this can be enhanced even further by changing the combinations of glass, the air or gas sandwiched between the glass and the spacer bar surrounding the glazing unit. 146 TECHNOLOGY Majority of light is transmitted through glass DAYLIGHT Single Glazing refers to a single pane of glass. Double and Triple Glazing refer to 2 or 3 panes of glass, each separated by a space. This space is set by a spacer bar that runs around the perimeter of the glass. The spacer bar conducts minimal heat through it and retains heat too, minimising the risk of condensation. This sandwich of glass and air is referred to as a sealed glass unit. SUN RAYS Most of the sun s rays are transmitted through the glass so as to benefit from free solar heating HEATING Most of the heat generated indoors is transmitted through the glass and escapes Visit us today at In a sealed glass unit, air currents between the two panes of glass carry heat to the top of the unit and settle into cold pools at the bottom. Filling the space with heavier, non-reactive Argon Gas rather than air, minimises these convection currents within the unit, conduction through the gas is reduced, and the overall transfer of heat between the indoors and outdoors is reduced. Due to it s greater density, Argon Gas also reduces sound transmission through the unit meaning better acoustic insulation. Most of the cold is transmitted through the glass and lowers indoor temperatures COLD OUTDOORS INDOORS SINGLE GLAZING offers virtually no heat insulation as glass conducts heat and cold. Heat escapes from indoors as easily as cold is transmitted from outdoors. Warm, moist air from indoors can then cool down when it touches the glass and turns back to liquid in the form of condensation. Over time, this condensation can form dangerous spores of mould. In a single-glazed home, over 25% of the heat loss is directly through the windows - effectively you re throwing money out of the window! A single pane of glass is easier to break meaning a greater risk of intrusion to your home. 146

147 TYPES OF GLAZING how glass is used in modern windows TECHNOLOGY Air or inert gas Coating Air or inert gas Coating Majority of light is transmitted through glass Majority of light is transmitted through glass DAYLIGHT DAYLIGHT SUN RAYS Most of the sun s rays are transmitted through the glass so as to benefit from free solar heating SUN RAYS GENERATED HEAT SUN RAYS Most of the sun s rays are transmitted through the glass so as to benefit from free solar heating SUN RAYS GENERATED HEAT Part of the sun s rays are reflected to avoid excessive solar heating Most of the heat generated indoors is reflected back into the room Part of the sun s rays are reflected to avoid excessive solar heating Most of the heat generated indoors is reflected back into the room Minimal cold is transmitted through the glass that could lower indoor temperatures Minimal cold is transmitted through the glass that could lower indoor temperatures COLD COLD OUTDOORS INDOORS OUTDOORS INDOORS DOUBLE GLAZING offers high levels of heat insulation. Insulation levels are governed by the type of glass, spacer bar, glass coating, air or gas fill. It can get rather complicated which is why the Energy Rating Labels are used (see Energy Ratings). A special coating on the inner face of the glass reflects some of the sun s rays to avoid solar overheating. This coating also reflects the heat from indoors back into the room. Keep the heat in, keep the noise out! Save money, reduce your heating bills Reduce your carbon footprint Less heat escaping means less energy to keep it warm which in turn means fewer CO2 emissions TRIPLE GLAZING offers even higher levels of heat insulation. Naturally, the Energy Rating will be higher as will be the sound insulation. Due to the heat build up inside a triple glazed unit, an ordinary pane of glass in the middle would get hot, expand a crack. The middle pane of a triple glazed unit is toughened to avoid this. In the process this makes for a very strong sealed unit with a high level of security. Triple glazing will cost more money, anywhere between 25% and 50% more so its unlikely you can justify this on heat insulation alone. However, if you want the best heat AND noise insulation along with the enhanced security, it justifies the extra cost. Call us on

150 CELEBRATING 25 YEARS REHAU CONGRATULATES PROFESSIONAL WINDOWS ON 25 YEARS Professional Window Contracting has just celebrated 25 years in business and 25 years as part of the REHAU family. To mark the event, REHAU s Southern Head of Sales Glyn Rogers and Marketing and Technical Director Gareth Jones visited the company s Sutton headquarters to present founder and Managing Director Tony Longworth with an engraved trophy and framed certificate. Glyn, who has worked closely with Professional for many years, said: Professional Windows is one of only a very small number of companies who have been able to achieve real success across several market sectors. As well as its core window contracting business serving the new build and social housing sectors, it also has a highly successful retail business - Cheam Windows, with four show centres across Surrey and a thriving trade counter Professional Building Plastics, based at its Sutton HQ. All three are continuing to grow and it s a real pleasure for REHAU to still be supporting them all after a quarter of a century. As well as acknowledging the fantastic contribution of his team and particularly his business partner Gary Hand, Tony attributes part of the company s success to another important decision choosing the REHAU brand at the outset and sticking to that for 25 years. Tony said: Fundamentally, what you get from REHAU is quality and when you re building your reputation, that s what you need to rely on from your suppliers. REHAU has never let us down over 25 years and continues to provide us with valuable technical and planning support on many of our large scale social housing projects. 150
