Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race Programme 2015 Foreword Welcome to the 2015 Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race! Rehab is sincerely grateful to all of the members of the Houses of Parliament and the Parliamentary Press Gallery who generously give their time and lots of energy to this annual event. Each year, teams of an incompatible political mixture, all hungry for glory, pour into Victoria Tower Gardens with aspirations of flattening the opposition. It sounds like a recipe for disaster! But we ve used the same recipe for the last 18 years and it works! So, what are the ingredients to the success of this hotly contested race? Well, take Rehab and its work with disabled people and others who need support, mix in MPs, Lords, media, add a large dollop of generosity, whisk in a lot of hilarity and, you ve got yourself the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race! Of course, the race has a serious side too. It s proved to be a really original and engaging way for us to raise awareness of the needs of disabled people, such as those with an acquired brain injury, spinal injury or a mental health problem, and others who are marginalised in society. Thousands of people and their families benefit each year from the services provided by Rehab across our locations in the UK and Ireland. We work hard to ensure that the people who avail of our services are enabled to live their lives to the full, whether that be moving into their own home, learning a new skill or getting a job. We are here to help make people s dreams come true. Finally, it just remains for me to wish each team the very best of luck and may your pancakes reach new heights! Mo Flynn Chief Executive Rehab Group 7

Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race Programme 2015 Ensuring Fair Play Cathy Newman, Channel 4 News, Official Starter 2015 Never mind chairing the election debates, starting the 2015 Rehab Parliamentary Pancake race is the job of any self-respecting broadcaster s dreams. Ensuring fair play for all those good eggs from press and parliament (not to mention calling time on the tossers) is a highlight of the political calendar. The MPs, peers and hacks taking part know how to have some good (mostly clean) fun, but as well as cracking plenty of yolks (sorry there s more where that came from), with a keenly-contested election just round the corner there are political reputations to win or lose here too. And win or lose, it s all for a great cause: the needs of the 80,000 disabled people Rehab helps each year are more pressing than ever. Come and cheer the right honourable members, lordships, and scribblers. Take as many incriminating photos as possible. And enjoy this diversion from the interminable election hostilities. No doubt there will be eggings on the campaign trail (Ed Miliband watch your back!). But the eggs in the Rehab race are really going to go the distance. There are strict rules of engagement which I ll be doing my utmost to enforce. But while first past the post might work in a parliamentary democracy, out there in Victoria Gardens it ll be a whole different story. For Westminster, think the Wild West. Believe me, if David Dimbleby thinks he s got his work cut out for the election debates, he ain t seen nothing yet. As they limber up for the most closely-fought election since the last most closely-fought election, the politicos are in fighting spirit. I can t wait. 8

Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race Programme 2015 Erick s New Beginning Erick Mason sustained horrific head injuries in a motorbike accident in 2005 which left him fighting for his life. But just a few years later, he is back working again. This is his story. In 2005, I was out for a motorbike ride with a group of friends. We were travelling along fine when one of my friends, who was driving in front of me, crashed his motorbike. I threw myself off my own bike in the hope of avoiding a serious collision. But my leg became caught and I was catapulted along the road with the bike. I was rushed to the local hospital s intensive care unit with a punctured lung, a broken arm and other severe internal injuries. My family were told to expect the worst, but I survived. However, as a result of the accident I also suffered brain damage to my frontal lobe, leaving me with memory difficulties, loss of control over my inhibitions, mood swings and changes to my personality. After the accident I returned to work and tried to carry on as if everything was the same. Unfortunately, due to my brain injury, it was not. After a while struggling on, it got to the point where I gave up my job. But thanks to Momentum Skills, I m now able to get on with my life with my wife and three children. Since my accident, I am a totally different person and those who know me really well will say that. It is extremely frustrating that I can t do the same things that I could before the accident. I can t multi-task at all and find it very difficult to retain new information. I suffered massive trauma to my head and I had to re-learn how to walk and eat. I also suffer from bad mood swings. Before attending the Momentum service, I was in complete denial that I had brain damage. This led to me almost having a nervous breakdown as I tried to continue as if nothing had happened. I found it difficult to accept that I had changed as a person. But the staff there taught me to accept that I will never be the same person again and, with their support, I have been able to accept that and get on with my life. The support that I ve had from Momentum Skills has been invaluable, I can t thank them enough. I stared the service in September 2010 and while on the programme I secured a work placement in the motor industry. The placement turned into a permanent position and I now work 15 hours a week. Keeping the hours to this limit has allowed me to continue attending Momentum Skills giving me the support at hand if I need it. It also allowed me to take on the role of Service User Representative. I didn t need to think very long before accepting this role as I felt a sense of achievement being able to help other service users by sharing what I have learned in the nine years since my injury happened. Helen s New Beginning The immense changes brought on by brain injury affect more than just the injured person themselves. Erick Mason s wife, Helen, talks about his brain injury from her perspective. Erick builds momentum and 16

Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race Programme 2015 helps others do the same in his role as Service User Representative. Erick and I had been married for 8 years when he suffered his brain injury. On the day of the accident our children had been to the caravan with their grandparents and arrived home about six o clock that evening. Moments later I received a phone-call saying that Erick had come off his motorbike and broken his arm. Our daughter Samantha was 16, Emily was 10 and Adam 6, and none of us felt any panic at the news of their dad s accident. He d come off his motorbike and broken his arm could have been worse. However, before I left for the hospital I got a phone-call from a policeman. The tone of his voice suggested that Erick had suffered more than just a broken arm. When I arrived at hospital Erick was in the A+E Department, lying in a bed covered by a blanket. He didn t look to be that injured. Apart from the obvious pain from his broken arm, he seemed to be OK. However, as I was standing by his bed I noticed his eyes began to role. Although I had no idea about what injuries he d suffered, it was obvious that something pretty serious had happened. Knowing nothing about head injury, let alone about brain injury, left me feeling very isolated. Nobody seemed able to give me any answers and I felt totally powerless. When it came to Erick s discharge from hospital, the impact that his condition had on our home environment was nothing short of horrendous. He talks about his feeling of near nervous breakdown due to the consequences and confusion of his brain injury and we all had immense changes to face. Erick went through a total character change which was to prove a real strain on relationships in the family. He was bad tempered and aggressive and to be honest, it felt like I was like looking after a young child again. Beyond trying to cope with his emotional changes came the harsh necessity of surviving financially with three dependent children, as well as now a husband to look after. Erick has always been a very proud man. In his job he had been a wonderful communicator, spending a lot of time away from home training and assessing employees for his employer, Kwik Fit. He always knew how to get the best out of people and enjoyed that responsibility. But we were now somewhere very different. Our roles had reversed. The responsibility of paying the mortgage now fell on my shoulders, so for me to retain a full-time job was crucial. Besides, Erick had spoken of his extreme tiredness and even falling to sleep on-the-job. We both realised that things couldn t go on as they were. When it came to changes in his and my relationship, they could be summed up with two words - communication difficulties. I had to become head of the house, the organiser, the one making day-to-day decisions, and Erick couldn t accept that. Call it male ego or call it pride; handing over the reigns to me would never be easy for him. And his relationship with our children proved to have its own issues. One of our children was having a lot of medical difficulties at the time, so quite apart from the impact of their dad being a changed man, was the fact that I had more than one person to focus on. None of us had ever been through experiences and challenges like the ones we now faced. We could find no support for Erick and the changes he faced, or for his family and the changes we faced. We didn t know where to go, who to speak to or who to get some answers from. Erick s continued outbursts of aggression led to us visiting our doctor, and we were directed to the Northumberland Head Injuries Unit. Maybe, finally, we were making some kind of progress in understanding Erick s condition and what he, I and our children were going through. The head injuries unit recommended us to Momentum Skills. At Momentum Skills people understood. Erick attended their rehabilitation programme and it was fabulous for us. It meant that he could be himself and find comfort from being surrounded by other people with brain injuries. It also meant that I as a family member who was experiencing brain injury from a different perspective, found the time to attend monthly counselling sessions with Momentum s Clinical Psychologist, Alistair Berry. For Erick, the rehabilitation programme saved his life and it s fantastic how much he values his role as Service User Representative. It s a role that was made for him in many ways. Having formerly been in a job that required the understanding and management of people, this role requires the same skills, plus it has the benefit of it being connected to people who Erick feels at one with, who he can understand from a unique perspective. Here s hoping that the role of Service User Representative can become a paid one! What is the future for me? Well, because I ve had the experiences of bringing up a child with a disability combined with a husband with a brain injury, I am currently looking into changing my career path and studying to become an occupational therapist. 17

Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race Programme 2015 Secrets of my Race Success Steve Pound MP, Ealing North As someone who has known the supreme ecstasy of holding aloft the winner s cup after the keenly contested Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race, I feel qualified to share some of the secrets of the skilled sprinting tosser. The first lesson any aspirant racer should absorb is that Members of the House of Lords should not, under any circumstances, be trusted. They may start off with a languid aristocratic stroll, but they quickly accelerate into a blur of motion with elbows flying with all the finesse of a Stoke City centre half and the pan doubling as a near lethal weapon. Secondly, it must be accepted that many MPs take the contest very seriously, particularly as it gives us the opportunity to get one over on journalists. There are few sweeter pleasures in life than turning tables on these tormentors in public. Finally, it is all about team work. Certain Members are blessed with fast twitch muscles, a great engine and a degree of brutality that leads to success, not just in politics but in the pancake race. The strongest runner must be craftily insinuated into the team in order that he or she can run two circuits while others puff in desperation far behind them. It should also not be forgotten that this is not a foot face but a test of real skill, co-ordination and tossing ability. Running, flipping and catching the pancake needs practice and the early riser will see a number of parliamentary friends of Rehab out at dawn in the days before the race, honing their sprinting skills in anticipation of the big day. The actual cup we win is suitably sized to hold an egg, but the prestige is immense. Rehab is a great charity to support and this race shows our commitment to their work. 20
