3 An Introduction to Peru: Student Activity 1 Learning About Peru Hola! My name is Fernando Bolivar. I live in the Andes Mountains near Ica in Peru. Welcome to my country! Can you find my country and the Andes Mountains on a map of the world? Peru is found on the west coast of South America. It is the third largest country in South America and the nineteenth largest in the world. The Pacific Ocean is on its coast. My country s flag has red and white stripes. On the white stripe in the middle is our coat of arms. On the shield is a vicuna, a cinchona tree, and a yellow cornucopia spilling out gold coins. The vicuna has given my people meat, wool, and transportation for many years. The cinchona tree produces a medicine that cures a sickness called malaria. The cornucopia and the gold stands for the gold found in Peru The red and white colors were the colors used by the Incan Empire. Colca Canyon, Peru There are 27,100,000 people living in Peru. More Native people live in Peru than in any other country in South America. They live in the Andes Mountains and the tropical rain forests found in my country. They speak the language of the Incas called Quechua. Some people have a mixed Native and Spanish heritage. They are called mestizos. People of European descent are called crillos. The main languages spoken in Peru are Spanish, Quechua, and Amarya. The ancestors of Peru s Native people were the Incas. They built a great empire in our country many years ago. Many of their temples and buildings are visited by tourists. Our capital city is called Lima, which is found on the west coast of Peru. It is the largest city in the country. Our government is called the Republic of Peru. We have a president as the head of our country. The president has two vice-presidents and a prime minister to help him run the government. 6 Mapping Skills Teacher-Directed Activity 2 A. Reproduce the map in Student Activity 4: Where is Peru? and distribute it to your students. B. Using a world map have students locate South America and Peru. Have the students locate Peru on their maps of South America. Its name should be printed on line 3. Instruct the students to color Peru red. C. Have the students locate the following countries that border on Peru and label each one on the designated lines. 1. Which country is long and narrow and borders Peru to the south of it? (Chile - line 5) 2. Which country is the smallest and borders northern Peru? (Equator - line 2) 3. Which country s border is to the north of Peru and Ecuador? (Columbia - line1) 4. The largest country in South America borders on Peru. What is its name? (Brazil - line 6) 5. Which country borders on Peru and Chile? (Bolivia - line 4) 6. How many countries in South America border on Peru? (5 countries) D. Direct your students attention to the lines that are found on a globe and map. Ask your students if they know what they are called and why they are there. If there is little response explain the following: Mapmakers or cartographers invented a grid system which is used to locate any point on the globe. These imaginary lines are called latitude and longitude lines. The lines can be used to measure the location of any place on a globe in degrees ( ). Latitude lines are called parallels. They are equally spaced and run east to west. They measure distance north or south of the Equator. The Equator is the imaginary line that circles the globe at its widest point. The Equator is at latitude O. The North and South Poles are each 90 from the Equator. Each degree of latitude is divided into 60 minutes and each minute is divided into 60 seconds. In this case, minutes and seconds measure distance not time. The location in latitude gives you the distance of a place north or south of the Equator.
