LIVE FROM THE STACKS: User Feedback on Mobile LIVE FROM THE STACKS:User Feedback on Mobile Computers and Wireless Tolls For Library Patrons Michael L.W. Jones, Robert H. Rieger, Paul Treadwell, Geri K. Gay LIVE FROM THE STACKS: User Feedback on Mobile Background Importance of usability studies is not new In 1980 GOMS models provide software engineers with quantifiable data and computationally relevant models of user information processing Trend moving from static to dynamic environment Quantitative measures are not effective in complex dynamic environment 1
LIVE FROM THE STACKS: User Feedback on Mobile Introduction Researchers in DL have noted the need for UCD during the development process Wireless and Ubicomp technology changes the way user interact with DL Designing effective mobile DL needs an equally robust social and administrative infrastructure Physical libraries provide a excellent environment to test these emerging concepts LIVE FROM THE STACKS: User Feedback on Mobile Research Survey Two weeks period Aims to solicit student feedback regarding existing and potential computing technologies in a library setting Online resources were nearly twice as popular with users as paper-based resource Poor ranking of the online book catalog impact the users preference greatly 2
LIVE FROM THE STACKS: User Feedback on Mobile Research Survey (cont.) First set of questions regarding various technologies and tasks and the importance in both in/out of library contexts Second set of questions outlined four potential usage scenarios in which a hypothetical user s activities were described LIVE FROM THE STACKS: User Feedback on Mobile Four Scenarios (1) Mobile device that allows user to search the online catalog anywhere in the building as well as interacts with others Catalog access outside the library domain and some extra features Remote collaboration between two parties The use of scanners to digitize documents to allow greater flexibility 3
LIVE FROM THE STACKS: User Feedback on Mobile Willingness of use LIVE FROM THE STACKS:User Feedback on Mobile Computers and Wireless Tolls For Library Patrons FIELD TESTING MOBILE LIBRARY TECHNOLOGIES 4
Objective Outline Tools & Functionality Activities Results & Findings Conclusion Comments Objective Testing a prototype software suite in a QUASI-NATURALISTIC context To understand the user behaviour under the influence of the system 5
Tools Vadem Clio computer + Windows CE HP hand-held held scanner My Library (personalised system) Online catalog Mobile Mapp (resource locator) Chat Live (online referencing) Vadem Clio computer + Windows CE Go back 6
HP hand-held held scanner My Library Go back 7
Mobile Mapp Chat Live! (online reference tool) 8
Activities Participants = students at Cornell Real but small library environment Briefing session Ptpt.. completed several tasks Completed a short survey One-on on-one one interviews, library staff and ptpt students. Tasks Book search using the online catalog Locate resources using the Mobile Mapp Scan & load pages Chat with reference desk Review MyLibrary suite Results & Findings QUASI-NATURALISTIC context context of use influences technologies Users generally like the concept of Mobile DL mobilising online catalog,, referencing Mobile MAPP, not very useful for small libraries Chatting, useful but change communication style Scanning, ok but not Tools, difficult to use while carrying 9
Go back + Users suggested carrying bags or harness devices 10
Results & Findings (cont( cont.) Arrangement of physical space is still important Need the right environment for researching and monitoring Conclusion The studies are seen as a preliminary step Arrangement of physical space is still very important for DL More studies are underway - time commitment - financial commitment - use different tools 11
Comments Time used in activities was not monitored It was about mobilising existing DL tools Equipment are to be more portable T h a n k y o u! 12
