11 SECTION D Youngstown State University For-Credit Associate-Level Programs and Certificates What do you consider to be your greatest strengths and why? Given the nature of this template, we have listed only strengths at the 2-year level and strengths that affect the 2-year level. Many of YSU s associate-level s are accredited by discipline-specific accrediting bodies and/or part of 2+2 s accredited by the major accrediting bodies in the field (e.g., ABET for most AAS and baccalaureate engineering degrees, AACSB for baccalaureate business degrees). Engineering AAS s (except drafting) are accredited by the Accreditation Commission of ABET. Each AAS health is accredited by the respective discipline-related accrediting body. AACSB does not accredit associate-level s, but the baccalaureate s with which YSU s associate-level business s articulate are accredited by AACSB. Except for the ATS degrees, almost all of YSU s associate-level degree s articulate seamlessly with YSU s baccalaureate s. Certificatelevel health s articulate with the respective associate-level health s, and associate-level health s articulate with the BSAS in Allied Health (in addition, a student with a paramedic license can work toward the BSAS in Allied Health without the AAS in Emergency Medical ); associate-level business degrees (except the ATS) articulate with baccalaureate business degrees; associate-level computer information and IT s, with baccalaureate computer s; the associate-level criminal justice, with baccalaureate criminal justice s; associate-level engineering AAS s (except drafting), with BSAS engineering s; the AAS dietetic technician, with the baccalaureate food and nutrition ; the associate-level hospitality management, with the baccalaureate-level hospitality management. The humanities and social studies AA degree does not formally articulate with other s, but many of the hours are applicable to baccalaureate s in the humanities or social sciences. The associate-level prekindergarten does not formally articulate, but a number of the hours are applicable to baccalaureate s in early childhood education or family and consumer studies. YSU has many articulation agreements between baccalaureate s at YSU and two-year s at community colleges (e.g., with Lorain County Community College) and technical/career centers. See the list of 30 agreements and 13 Tech Prep agreements in section B of this asset-mapping template. Discussion about other agreements (e.g., nursing) with Lorain County Community College is ongoing. The same-institution first-to-second-year retention rate for first-time, full-time, associate-degree-seeking students at YSU is regularly above 60%. For fall 2006 to fall 2007 (the most recent year for which figures are available), the rate was 68.8%. By comparison, the state s 2008 Statistical Profile lists the 2005 same-institution retention rate for the community college sector as 53%, and the rate for the state community college sector as 55%. Retention rates (both same-institution and at any institution in the state) were considerably lower at most northeast Ohio community colleges and branch campuses. YSU won the Educational Policy Institute s 2007 Retention Award for overall retention and services for at-risk students (YSU s Center for Student Progress and first-year services were featured in the EPI s November 2007 Student Success newsletter, available at According to data in the state s Performance Reports/Statistical Profiles, YSU s overall first-to-second-year retention rate is typically the highest or among the highest at openadmissions 4-year institutions in Ohio. The Higher Commission recently approved YSU to offer any s (2-year, 4-year, or above) by asynchronous distance learning without prior Commission approval. YSU s BSAS in Allied Health and Master of Health and Human Services were already available asynchronously; other s will soon be available entirely by asynchronous distance learning, with general education available either through YSU or through the Ohio Network. Students in YSU s EMT (and other) health s have high pass rates on licensure exams (as do students in most of our baccalaureate s, which aren t listed on the grid). YSU s EMT first-time pass rates are regularly among the highest in the state. According to the state s most recent Performance Reports/Statistical Profiles, 88% of YSU s associate-degree graduates find employment or continue schooling in Ohio a high percentage given that Youngstown is only a few miles from the Ohio-Pennsylvania border. 11
