Zaleski Year M1: 3rd year Ingénieur s program in French at EP Year M2: program taught entirely in English Location of courses: EP or UPMC campuses FUNDAMENTALS & APPLICATIONS Objectives: To acquire a fundamental understanding of modern challenges in fluid mechanics and to learn how to use the most recent theoretical concepts and methods Semester S3: Six months of (mostly required) courses Semester S4: Six-months of scientific project (internship) in an academic or industrial laboratory in France or abroad Instructors: leading international scholars in the Paris area 23 students in (14 enrolled at 2 Caltech, 1 Univ. Partner Institutions Similar size and academic culture with emphasis on fundamental engineering sciences at Caltech and École Polytechnique At Caltech, a new Space Engineering Masters program was launched in 2007 with the goal of re-establishing ties with JPL and attracting talented students (Ares Rosakis, Director, GALCIT) At École Polytechnique-Université Pierre et Marie Curie, the language of the second year in Masters program (M2) was switched from French to English in September 2007 with the objective to attract more international students and to develop Dual Master s degrees with international partners (Patrick Huerre, Program Director, LadHyX) Several visits had taken place at Caltech and at École Polytechnique in order to finalize the academic content and the details of the program Strong support of faculty and administration in both partner institutions

4 IN AEROSPACE ENGINEERING OR AERONAUTICS & FLUID MECHANICS Objective : to foster the development of a long-term cooperation on education and research on topics of interest to the Space Engineering and Aeronautical Sciences community between two leading academic institutions: California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and École Polytechnique (EP) Caltech-EP two-year program: Caltech students: 1st year at Caltech, 2 nd year at EP EP students: 1st year at EP, 2 nd year at Caltech Structure of the Program Caltech s Masters program is one year (3 terms) in duration and emphasizes fundamentals of fluid and solid/structural mechanics with applications to experimental methods and space engineering. École Polytechnique s Masters program is two years (M1, M2) in duration and emphasizes modern fluid mechanics. The second year program (M2) is entirely taught in English. Flexibility in course requirements to suit student needs. The traditional courses are tightly coupled with internships each year. Research projects under joint supervision between the two partner institutions and associated research institutions and industry. History of the Program Successful launch of Dual Master s Program in Aeronautics/ Space Engineering (Caltech) and Fluid Mechanics (École Polytechnique) in the academic year : Financial support from Partner University Fund (French Embassy in Washington) Up to 1/3rd of the cost supported by PUF

6 Future: Solid Mechanics & Doctoral Research Extension of dual Master agreement to Solid Mechanics (Offer by EP of Solid Mechanics M2 in English; dual Master with Caltech underway) Extension of dual Master agreement to other depts at Caltech (ME, Chem.E.,.) Definition of a jointly supervised dual Caltech-EP PhD program Benefits & Outcome Promote increased cooperation between Caltech and École Polytechnique in education and research leading to fundamental discoveries and technological innovations in areas related to Aerospace Sciences and Engineering Complementary components of degree programs. Internships in partner countries provide broadening experience Attract a significant number of students (including domestic students!) to the graduate programs of both institutions.
