2 The International Companion Animal Welfare Conference ICAWC heads to Turkey! For 2014, we are excited to be returning to Turkey. We are revisiting the city of Istanbul and since our last visit in 2001, ICAWC has doubled in size, now attracting over 300 delegates each year. Many of the topics appear on the programme as a result of requests made by you, both via the feedback forms or by . We look forward to meeting new delegates and welcoming back old friends and can guarantee a full programme covering all aspects of companion animal welfare. We know that many delegates like to extend their stay either before or after the conference. We would like to make you aware that the weekend prior to ICAWC (3rd-5th October) is an Islamic public holiday and may involve animal sacrifice in and around some of the city s mosques. The ICAWC vision The International Companion Animal Welfare Conference (ICAWC) was developed by its organisers with the belief in working towards a world where no healthy companion animal is destroyed for want of a caring home with responsible owners. Promote your organisation at ICAWC Send us 3 powerpoint slides which tell us about you and what you do and we will play them during coffee breaks. Slides must be received by 15th September. The Venue We would like to remind all delegates that the majority of visitors to Turkey will require a visa to gain entry. This can either be done in advance online or upon arrival at Istanbul airport and the visa should cost approximately 14. We would recommend doing this in advance via ICAWC in Spain 2013 sold out in record time, so please ensure that you book your place early this year to avoid disappointment. The 5* Grand Cevahir Hotel is conveniently located in the district of Sisli with many shops and restaurants within walking distance. We have negotiated a discounted rate for delegates but we realise that the Grand Cevahir Hotel is still more expensive than some previous venues. Please International@dogstrust.org.uk for a list of alternative accommodation if required. 6th October - Optional shelter visit This year we are offering the chance to visit The Bakirköy Municipality Stray Animal Shelter. This shelter has served street animals in the district of Bakırköy for nearly 20 years. They provide free neutering, vaccinations, treatment, microchipping and have operated a catch, neuter, release programme since Numbers vary, but currently there are about 450 dogs and 75 cats in the shelter. *Places are extremely limited. If you would like to visit the shelter, please indicate your time preference when registering and we will do our best to accommodate your choice. Times 9:00am 10:30am 12:00pm

4 Evening & Optional Activities Welcome Dinner Monday 6th October, 7pm Complimentary Welcome Drinks Reception at the Grand Cevahir Hotel The organisers invite you to join us on the opening night of the conference for drinks and canapés at the hotel. Weather permitting, we will be eating outdoors to enjoy the end of the Turkish summer and the hotel s outside facilities. Please join us for a chance to mix with other delegates in a relaxed and informal setting. Optional Dinner Tuesday 7th October, 6:30pm Optional Bosphorus Cruise and Gala Dinner at Portaxe Restaurant Guests will be transferred to a private boat for a short cruise down the Bosphorus for a chance to view Istanbul from the water. The boat will moor at the famous Portaxe restaurant where dinner will be enjoyed on the outdoor terrace with views of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and many waterside mansions. Guests will enjoy a 4 course Mediterranean meal and will be entertained by traditional belly dancers. Price: 50 per person to include Bosphorus Cruise, 4 course meal and drinks. Optional Sightseeing Thursday 9th October City of Istanbul Tour You will begin your tour of the Sultanahmet district, the heart of old Istanbul, at Saint Sophia. Built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD, this church is one of the marvels of world architecture and its massive dome dominates the skyline of old Istanbul. Next you will visit the Blue Mosque, which owes its name to the exquisite tiles adorning its interior and then onto the Hippodrome, the stadium of ancient Byzantium. Finally, indulge in some shopping, Ottoman style. The Grand Bazaar was the commercial heart of the old city and its 4,000 shops are full of treasures including carpets, silks, jewellery and leather goods.
