1 Clinical Coding Trainer Programme Train the Trainer Course Overview This practical, skills-based programme allows recently qualified Approved Apprentice Clinical Coding Trainers to practice their newly developed training delivery skills by delivering mock training sessions from the Clinical Coding Standards Course. This course has the primary objective of preparing the new trainer to be able to deliver formal classroom training to novice clinical coders to ensure the quality of ICD-10 and OPCS-4 code assignment. This is a unique 10-day course, one module of which is developed, updated and delivered by the NHS Classifications Service the authoritative source of clinical classifications (ICD-10 and OPCS-4) and coding standards that underpin the health, public health and social care systems by providing quality information to support evidence-led care to patients and populations. The course is divided into two modules: Module 1: Five-day Training Delivery Skills Course (provided by the Training Foundation in Coventry) NB: This module must be completed before Module 2 Module 2: Five-day ICD-10 and OPCS-4 Train the Trainer Module (provided by the NHS Classifications Service in Leeds) Some pre-course preparation is required as detailed in the Course Joining Pack which is sent out 2-3 weeks before the course start date. Students will be expected to deliver mock training sessions and participate in interactive individual and group activities. Have access to highly experienced and skilled NHS Classifications Servicebased Approved Clinical Coding Trainers (regularly assessed to ensure high quality delivery). 1

2 Achieve formal NHS Classifications Service Approved Apprentice Clinical Coding Trainer certification. Have the opportunity to network with Approved Apprentice Clinical Coding Trainers from other organisations. Benefits to the organisation A skilled, learner-focused trainer who can deliver formal clinical coding training that is engaging to all novice clinical coders. Improved effectiveness of formal training events and of learning transferred to the workplace. The opportunity to deliver a more costefficient in-house training programme for novice clinical coders. Attendance Criteria This course is available to existing Accredited Clinical Coders who have demonstrated that they meet all the Clinical Coding Trainer Programme Pre- Requisite Criteria (Hyperlink to be used here); have successfully met the required pass marks in all aspects of the Clinical Coding Trainer Assessment Day including written practical and theory clinical coding assessment papers (Hyperlink to be used here); and have confirmed, along with their line manager, their ongoing commitment to all aspects described on the registration form (Hyperlink to be used here). Course objectives and assessment Delegates will be able to: Understand and apply different training delivery and basic facilitation methods, recognise the needs of different learners, appreciate the value of high quality clinical coding training delivery and how it supports data quality and develop the confidence required to train coders back in the workplace by opening and delivering mock training sessions in accordance with key learning points using the sample national standardised training materials provided. Apply the skills to train others in the four step coding process and rules and conventions of the classifications by describing what methods they would use to communicate the national clinical coding standards for a given OPCS-4 issue using the OPCS-4 checklist and flip chart paper provided. Create a detailed trainer portfolio achieving all elements stated in the group work briefing handout. Feedback on mock training delivery sessions is provided during the course by the NCS TAP Assessor using the TAP Training Style, Activity and Structure 2

3 Profiles. Further feedback is provided to the delegate about their overall performance on an informal feedback sheet after the course. What will delegates learn? Delegates will build on the training delivery skills taught by The Training Foundation and will learn how to adapt these skills in a clinical coding training environment. Preparing for a clinical coding training course Preparing the environment for the delivery of a clinical coding learning event Preparing appropriate trainer and delegate resources Communicating pre-course elearning module requirements Delivering training as a solo trainer Co-delivering training with a fellow Approved trainer Structuring clinical coding training Monitoring and controlling progress of the group and individuals Assessing achievement of the course/session objectives Facilitating clinical coding training Generating a positive learning climate Dealing with challenging learners Praising learners when appropriate Using different training methods An excellent content delivered with enthusiasm and professionalism with lots of activities to maintain interest. 3 Selecting training aids appropriate to delegate needs and the particular classification chapter being taught Building in different activity options Establishing and maintaining credibility Next Steps Projecting a professional, knowledgeable and confident image Ensuring an anti-discriminatory attitude at all times Articulate the wider use of coded clinical data Appreciate the use of coded clinical data as part of the electronic health record This course is the first step in an Approved Clinical Coding Trainer s development. Apprentice Clinical Coding Trainers must undergo a trainer promotion assessment no earlier than 6 months and no later than two years following completion of the course. Failure to undergo assessment during this timeframe will result in approved status and all associated benefits being revoked. Course Materials Each delegate receives:

NB: Commercial / independent Apprentice Clinical Coding Trainers will be invoiced in advance as materials are only free of charge to NHS-based trainers Latest version of the Approved Clinical Coding Trainer Requirements Framework, User Guide and Code of Conduct NHS Classifications Service Approved Apprentice Clinical Coding Trainer certificate valid for two years Training Foundation Delivery Skills Certificate valid for three years Reference Materials Each delegate must supply their own reference books for use during the course: World Health Organisation s International Statistical Classification of Disease and Related Health Problems 10 th Revision (2010 Edition) Volumes 1, 2 and 3 (fully updated to reflect WHO errata published in the Coding Clinic Ref 91 updated in August 2012) OPCS Classification of Interventions and Procedures Version 4.6 Volumes I and II Current version of OPCS-4 Chemotherapy Regimens List and Clinical Coding Guidance Current version of OPCS-4 High Cost Drugs List and Clinical Coding Guidance National Clinical Coding Standards ICD-10 4 th Edition reference book (current version) OPCS-4 National Clinical Coding Standards reference book (current version) Coding Clinic Ref 81: Coding of Co-morbidities Train the Trainer Course Timings Day One: Day Two: Day Three: Day Four: Day Five: NB: Evening work is required most days Registration

Delegates requiring overnight accommodation during Module 1 will need to arrange this separately. If booking hotel accommodation as an NHS delegate, always ask for Government rate where this is available.
