1 New York University Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Department of Spanish and Portuguese Elementary Quechua II Spring 2014 Lecturer: Dr. Odi Gonzales 19 University Place Office: # 430 Phone: Office Hours: Tuesday 3:30 4:30 p.m. Course Description / Contract Quechua is the most important and most widely distributed indigenous language in South America, with about 10 million speakers living from the high mountains to the tropical lowlands in Colombia (where the language is called Ingano), Ecuador (where it is called kichwa or runa shimi, "human speech"), Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina (where it is usually spelled Quechua and called, by its speakers, runa simi). Increasing numbers of indigenous migrants from these countries now live in Spain, Italy, and the US (especially in New Jersey and New York City). The principal language of the Inca empire, which reached nearly the North to South length of South America, extending East to West from the coastal deserts, over the mountains to the tropical plains of the Amazon, Quechua was the key language of cultural interaction during the colonial era, and has remained central to indigenous peoples' efforts to preserve their cultural autonomy. Spoken in market places and urban peripheries throughout Andean South America, as well as in the countryside, Quechua has gained greater force in recent years, during which indigenous movements have swept Quechua speakers into national politics, where they have succeeded in transforming constitutions to recognize cultural diversity in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, making Quechua into an official language of state and successfully promoting schooling in the language. Contrary to the claim that globalization would bring an end to languages like Quechua, it has instead sparked important social movements that seem only to strengthen it. Studying Quechua opens a window onto alternative ways of thinking about social worlds, about space and time, family, and humans' relationship with the natural world. Quechua is recommended for students anticipating travel to the Andean region, those interested in language and linguistics, and those interested in indigenous literatures and cultures. Students who satisfactorily complete introductory Quechua will be well-prepared for intensive summer study at one of many summer study abroad programs in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia that will put them in closer contact with the indigenous world. For undergraduates, the projected four-semester sequence of Beginning and Intermediate Quechua will satisfy NYU's foreign language requirement. For graduate students, Quechua is a FLAS approved language course (see CLACS webpage for details about FLAS fellowships). 1

2 Prerequisites: None Course Objectives: Elementary Quechua I is a four-credit basic level course that introduces the basic material of Quechua Language in connection with its current/actual environment, the Andean world. The principal goal of this course is to provide you with the opportunity to know oral and written communication skills in Quechua, the language of one of the most important civilizations of the world: The Inka Culture, by applying all the grammar rules known until today. You will be expected to substantially reach a vocabulary and make initial progress in reading and writing skills. *Texts 1. Runa Simi I/Teoría; Runa Simi I/Práctica. Reader. It is acceptable that you can use any other Quechua books and dictionaries. REQUIREMENTS 1. ATTENDANCE and CLASS PARTICIPATION Attendance is mandatory. Class participation is a key element in language learning, and is also a very important factor in your grade. The maximum participation points you can earn per day is 10. If you are absent, you cannot participate and will not receive any points for that day. You are allowed three absences in the semester for illness or family emergencies. After three absences, you will receive 0 in participation for each additional day you miss. Presence in class does not mean that you will receive a perfect participation score: you must arrive prepared for class, participate actively in class discussions about the Quechua lessons. Three late arrivals count as one absence. Arriving 5 minutes late or more is considered tardy. Classes will be conducted in English/Spanish. You are required to bring to class material that professor will provide you, beside your own material. 2. ASSIGNMENTS Homework: All homework must be presented in class according to the lessons and syllabus. The professor will review each one and it will permit you to accumulate points and clarify doubts, exceptions and difficult cases. Complementary Homework: In order to reinforce Quechua oral practice, the course will be completed with audition of main aspects of the Quechua grammar, and some exercises (Quechua songs, dialogues) to be completed. Compositions: There will be three compositions. The first one you will make in class. Your compositions will be returned to you with errors marked. After making all necessary corrections you will submit the final version in the next class. All compositions will be assigned a grade, each grade is worth 50% of the final composition grade. Oral presentations: You will be responsible of doing an individual oral presentation. You will have a time of 10 minutes in which you will talk in Quechua in your our words. You will be required to memorize your presentation, reading will not be allowed. Your presentation grade will be based on grammar, pronunciation, and memorization. 3

4 3. EXAMINATIONS Exams: There will be three in-class partial exams, and a final exam, according to the syllabus. Quizzes: A 15 minutes quiz will be administered occasionally to test vocabulary, verbs, and that you have done the assigned readings. Quiz days are marked on the syllabus, but professor may assign them as he sees fit. 4. MAKE-UPS Not late work will be accepted and no make-ups will be given for missed exams. If you miss an exam due to illness, in order to be allowed to make-up the exam, you must provide a note from the University Health Service stating that on that particular day you were unable to attend class due to illness.
