Course Description A survey of the roles, functions, and activities of human resource management including job analysis, job design, recruiting, selection, placement, training and development, compensation, employee and labor relations, and current issues in both the domestic and global environments. This course is a prerequisite for 4000-level HRM courses. Prerequisite: MGT Course Objectives To establish basic knowledge and practical familiarity with the major functional areas of human resource management, oriented toward strategic application, both domestically and internationally. To provide a basic introduction to global perspectives on human resource management policies and practices. This is a required course in the Global Business curriculum. Student Learning Outcomes On completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the current field of human resource management, including the roles played by members of the human resource management function in organizational-strategy formulation. 2. Identify and describe the major laws influencing human resource management in the U.S., including antidiscrimination, safety, and labor legislation. 3. Explain how differences in national cultures and values affect human resource management policies and practices. 4. Apply human resource management principles and techniques to support organizational objectives in human resource planning, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance evaluation, discipline and control, compensation and benefits, and employee/union relations. 5. Explain how ethical considerations affect the field of human resource management, both domestically and internationally. 6. Differentiate between traditional human resource management and strategic human resource management. 7. Assess the implications of the concept of sustainability on human resource management. Course Prerequisites Pre-Business Core and MGT 3300 is the prerequisite for HRM These courses must be complete before beginning work in this class.
3 Course Topics Course topics include: Recruitment, Placement, and Talent Management, Training and Development, Compensation, Employee Relations, and Managing Global Human Resources. Specific Course Requirements This class consists of weekly assignments, four quizzes, midterm exam, discussion boards, and final exam. Even though this is an on-line distance learning schedule, the requirements and expectations are equal to that of the same in-class course. It is assumed that students have already considered the challenges of an on-line course and will complete the necessary quantity of course work with the level of quality expected to consider the requirements successfully met. ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A GRADE IN THIS COURSE. Specific requirements follow in this syllabus. 1. Upon Enrollment: Order or buy the text immediately; delays due to not ordering text upon your date of enrollment will not be an excuse for late assignments. Requirements: Submit an to the professor that you have read and understood the syllabus prior to the deadline set forth in the course schedule at the back of this syllabus. Failure to do so will result in a deduction of 5 points from your first exam. Complete all assigned readings. Copies of chapter slides will be posted in weekly assignments. Complete written assignments (see course schedule in back). Participate in Discussion Board Forums (see below for more instructions). This is particularly important if you are traveling or otherwise separated from the others in class. Complete required Exams (see below for more instructions). The student is expected to remain in regular contact with the professor and class via regular attendance, or other communications means, by participating in the discussion forums, submitting assignments and taking exams. Research Component This class involves weekly assignments which involves research and documentation. No formal research paper is required. Entrance Competencies: The student must possess the knowledge and skills of a 3 rd or 4 th year college student and the capability to perform on a college level. The student must have the ability to read and comprehend written instructions and have time management skills.

There will be a 2-hour time limit and 5 points will be deducted for every minute you go over the time limit. You are responsible for posting full proctor information through the etroy proctor form, found online at: Assignment of Grades All grades will be posted in the student grade book in Blackboard and will be weighted and assigned according to the following scale: A % B 80 89% C 70 79% D 60 69% F 59% and below FA See below I do not round or curve grades, because you have ample opportunity to improve your grade. We will focus, instead, on creating a quality product the first time, and every time, thus eliminating the need to do extra work. Postings: Quizzes, Exams, Group Assignment Grades, and Discussion Board Grades are posted on Blackboard, in the Grade Book. To check your grade, look at the Weighted Total Column. Do not use the Points Column to calculate grades as this column is not weighted. FA: FA indicates the student failed due to attendance. SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS: There are several cases to analyze, listed in the course schedule: Please note the due dates on them. Your responses must be typed, using 12pt. font, double-spaced, in MS- Word format. Failure to comply will result in point deductions. The cases and assignments must be posted in the Discussion Board thread designated for that assignment by 11:59 pm of the due date (note: Blackboard operates on central US time and that is the standard we will use).
6 Assignments will NOT be accepted late. You know the schedule. Manage your time to meet it. For group assignments, only include the group members that contributed to the assignment on the Title Page. Then create a file name and save it using the following format: Week1Grp3_T1_15. Once done, you may submit the case in the Discussion Thread on Blackboard designated for that assignment. Points will be deducted for failure to follow the format requirements. All work must be original and must not have been used in a previous term. If you use previously submitted work, you will fail the class and be reported to the academic disciplining committee and recommended for expulsion. PARTICIPATION IN DISCUSSION BOARD FORUMS: There are several discussion items posted in the Discussion Board. One of these, the Kindomality, is a social forum to enable students to introduce themselves. Another is Ask the Instructor in which questions about any aspect of the course may be posted. The remaining discussion boards relate specifically to the course, and you are expected to contribute. Please note the date/time frames in both the Course Schedule and the Discussion Forum setting forth the times during which you can participate. Comments submitted prior to the start date and after the closed-by date will not be included in the grading process. This is like attending class if you are not in the classroom at the time of the discussion, you cannot receive credit for participation. Be sure to note the date by which you must respond. The items will NOT be available for you to respond to after those dates, so do not ask to make them up if you miss them. To receive full credit for a grade, a student must make a substantive, independent comment and two additional substantive comments to something the instructor submits or to another student s question or comments. A comment such as I agree (or disagree) or what do you mean or something similar does not qualify. I read every submission to the forums. If I see a submission similar to an I agree type of comment, I will remove it, and the student will not receive any credit for it. Each of your comments must be presented as a professional would present it by substantiating it with evidence and critical thought. GROUP PARTICIPATION: The expectation is that all group members contribute to the weekly group assignments. All contributing group members will make the same grade. Failure to participate in weekly group assignments will result in a score of zero for that assignment and a reduction in your overall participation score. You cannot pass this class if you do not participate in the group assignments. At the end of the term you must fill out the Peer Evaluation form. Failure to submit the peer evaluation will result in a 5 point deduction from your final grade. Examination Schedule and Instructions There will be one mid-term exam and one final exam. All exams and quizzes will be timed but only the final exam will be proctored. The exams will be multiple-choice.
7 They will be available for a specific period of time. See course schedule for dates. The exams will be delivered online via Blackboard. They will be found in the Assessments section. The exams will be timed. Points will be deducted if the student overruns the time limit for the exam. See the exam instructions for the time limit and how the overrun deductions are calculated. PROCTORED FINAL EXAM: This course requires one proctored exam. The dates of this exam are Monday, December 7 December 10. Students will be responsible for working with etroy Undergraduate Testing to arrange for a proctor. All necessary instructions and information can be found under the Proctor Info tab located on Blackboard and also at Questions about proctoring should be directed to etroy: Cheating on Exams: The midterm is an open book exam and you may use your textbook/notes. The final exam is a closed book exam and you may not use your textbook or notes. The penalty for academic dishonesty is an F in the course. For example, if you tell your proctor that I said it is ok to use your textbook/notes or if you make any other false statement regarding my instructions, you will receive an F in this course. Please notice the due date for the exams as they are due by Thursdays instead of Sundays. Late Registration Students who register during the first week of the term, during late registration, will already be one week behind. Students who fall into this category are expected to catch up with all of Week #1 and Week #2's work by the end of Week #2. No exceptions, since two weeks constitutes a significant percentage of the term's lessons. Students who do not feel they can meet this deadline should not enroll in the class. If they have registered, they should see their registrar, academic adviser, GoArmyEd or Military Education officer to discuss their options. Also note that late registration may mean you do not receive your book in time to make up the work you missed in Week #1. Not having your book on the first day of class is not an excuse for late work after the deadlines in the Course Schedule. Incomplete Grade Policy Missing any part of the Course Schedule may prevent completion of the course. If circumstances will prevent the student from completing the course by the end of the term, the student should complete a request for an incomplete grade. Note: A grade of incomplete or INC is not automatically assigned to students, but rather must be requested by the student by submitting a Petition for and Work to Remove an Incomplete Grade Form. Requests for an incomplete grade must be made on or before the date of the final assignment or test of the term. The form will not be available after the last day of the term. A grade of INC does not replace an F and will not be awarded for excessive absences. An INC will only be awarded to student presenting a valid case for the inability to complete coursework by the conclusion of the term. It is ultimately the instructor s decision to grant or deny a request for an incomplete grade, subject to the policy rules below. Policy/Rules for granting an Incomplete (INC). An incomplete cannot be issued without a request from the student. To qualify for an incomplete, the student must:
8 Have completed over 50% of the course material and have a documented reason for requesting incomplete (50% means all assignments/exams up to and including the midterm point, test, and/or assignments.) Be passing the course at the time of their request. If both of the above criteria are not met an incomplete cannot be granted. An INC is not a substitute for an F. If a student has earned an F by not submitting all the work or by receiving an overall F average, then the F stands. TROY All students are responsible for ensuring that the correct address is listed in Blackboard by the beginning of Week One. is the only way the instructor can, at least initially, communicate with you. It is your responsibility to make sure a valid address is provided. Failure on your part to do so can result in your missing important information that could affect your grade. Students can use a TROY computer lab (if available), a public library, etc., to insure they have access. Not having a computer or computer crashes are not acceptable excuses for late work. Have a back-up plan in place in case you have computer problems. Be sure to register during the registration timeframes There are four weeks of registration for each term. Register early and order your books. etroy runs on nine week terms. Waiting until the first week of classes to register and order books is too late. It is the online learners responsibility to be prepared for the first day of the term. etroy students are required to order their textbooks through MBS Direct to insure the student has the proper materials for the course. Work with your instructor while in an online course the online learners are expected to work with the faculty who teach the course when questions arise related to the course and the grades.
