3 Our qualifications NIBA College of and Risk Professionals has a broad range of qualifications on offer in financial services. Although we have a traditionally strong focus on educating insurance brokers, we also offer general and life insurance programs and specialities such as risk management and workers compensation insurance. Content Each College qualification is made up of modules that consist of related topics. These topics cover the skills and knowledge required to perform job functions in the risk and insurance broking industry sectors. NIBA College makes it easy for students to attain the skills they need by organising the topics into blocks of study. This way you can opt to attain a full qualification, or undertake a single block of study that covers an area of specific interest or relevance. Studying in blocks allows you to gradually build up a qualification in a realistic timeframe that suits your work and personal commitments. The enrolment period for each block is 12 months and the vast majority of students comfortably complete their studies within this time limit. As you complete each topic you earn national competency units that are recorded on your Statement of Attainment. You can use your Statement of Attainment to apply for credits towards TAFE courses and those offered by other private providers or university. NIBA College will also award you credits in its programs for relevant competency units you have attained at other training organisations. Your Statement of Attainment is also important to demonstrate to ASIC that you have attained the units it requires for accreditation as a Tier 1 or Tier 2 product adviser or Responsible Manager. Completion of various blocks of study at NIBA College can also earn you professional development points that can be used to meet the annual training requirements for NIBA members. Course delivery There are a number of options for how you go about learning at NIBA College. Full details about how to participate in a traineeship can be found on the NIBA website as well as details of State or Federal governments training incentives available to employers. Distance study The College is primarily a distance education provider. We provide a mix of technologies including study notes, online presentations and podcasts. NIBA College regularly updates learning resources and learner support systems. Distance study is especially suited to individuals that seek the flexibility of self-paced learning. Once enrolled, you can access your reading materials, elearning and podcast presentations via the My NIBA College website login. We provide regular student reminders to help keep you on track with your coursework. All participants are provided with detailed feedback on their assignments and tutorials are easy to arrange when required. Workshops The College offers 3-day workshops in a number of courses to complement the distance study materials. Workshops are for small groups and are led by expert trainers who provide an overview of the key skill areas and provide extensive advice on assessment requirements. Most workshop participants find that their study time is reduced because of the learning opportunities provided in the classroom setting. Workshops suit participants with all levels of experience as the types of learning activities employed provide opportunities for collaboration and learning support. Assessment There are no final exams for any topic. Your skills and knowledge are assessed by a combination of quizzes, short assignments, self-assessments, third party verifications and practical case studies. Our prior students and employers have confirmed that this is an effective way for professionals to acquire relevant capabilities that can be applied on the job when required. Professional assessment This option is suited to individuals who have been working in the industry for some time and seek to have their current competencies formally recognised with the award of a national qualification. As an assessment candidate, you work closely with your assigned NIBA College assessor who provides detailed guidance on how to prepare and present evidence of your skills and knowledge. Not only do you gain formal recognition of your capabilities but many find that this program is an excellent professional development activity. 4 5
