3 St. Brigid Mary of the Gael was born in the mid-fifth century, is buried at Downpatrick beside St. Patrick and St. Colmcille. Brigid built the first Irish Convent beside a giant oak tree-this place became known as the Church of the Oak (Cill Dara) or Kildare as it is known today. Brigid was the daughter of a pagan chieftain-a stubborn unbeliever. Before his death, Brigid sat by him in prayer, and whiled away the time weaving the first St. Brigid s Cross from the rushes strewn about the floor. Her father, seeing the Cross asked her to explain its meaning and was so overwhelmed, became a Christian before his death. The St. Brigid s Cross, believed to protect the home and animals from evil and want, is placed in cottages on her feast day, February 1st, the day on which she died about 524 A.D. Care for our Sisters & Brothers St. Brigid's Parish puts into practice the words of Jesus: "Whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me" (Matthew 25:40). Joan Echausse is the Director of Parish Outreach ( ext 308). The Parish Outreach Office (ext. 327) is located in the lower level of the rectory (50 Post Ave). St. Brigid's Well (ext. 361) serves our sisters and brothers in the New Cassel area. Sister Liz Gill & Sister Julie Thompson coordinate the Ministry of Winter Grace and Kathy Battistini and Barbara Fleming coordinate Senior Connections. Yanira Chacon-Lopez (ext. 362) coordinates Casa Mary Johanna which provides immigration counseling and other support in the Hispanic Community, Educate Adults and Our Children Religious Education Program: We share the Good News with children, teens, their parents and other interested adults. Visit our Website at Our American Community From the early Irish immigrants who founded this parish in 1850, to the arrival of people from Europe, Africa, Asia and Central and South America, each culture brings a heritage to share and particular ways to express our one faith in Jesus Christ. Some in St. Brigid s trace their roots here for several generations. Some have been here for a decade or two. Some have just arrived. A multi-cultural community is balanced when there is time and space for cultures to develop on their own, and time and space where we are all together as one -- working together, playing together and praying together. Black Catholic Community St. Brigid s has a vibrant Catholic community of members of African, Caribbean, and African American descent. This community continues to minister to our church and community. We encourage all who are interested to learn more about the rich heritage of our community and those who want to assist our parish needs, in addition to hosting cultural, spiritual, and community building events. 4 Breaking Open the Word Reflecting on next Sunday s Gospel before you come to Mass can bring so much more meaning to your experience of liturgy. Here s the gospel for next Sunday. How does this Gospel touch your life? March 9th- Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 7:21-27 Jesus said to his disciples: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?' Then I will declare to them solemnly, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.' "Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined." Gospel Reflection Questions Think of a time in your life when your decision was built on sandy ground. When it was built on rock. Think of a time when you did the right thing for the wrong reason. Think of how you recognize God s presence in your everyday life. Some Questions for Families & Children Think of what you would do first if you were building a house. Think of what building materials would be the best to begin with. 2 In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us that merely saying words, are not enough to be considered one of His disciples. What really matters is what we do for God our Father, not what we do for ourselves. We must take the words of Jesus and use them as the foundation for our lives. We will then be protected from whatever storms, floods and violence in our lives may lie ahead. Our foundation in God, His words and His teachings will be our solid foundation of rock. 5 Sunday Morning POST We are not done listening! As I have been making the invitation to people to attend the listening sessions regarding the future site of our Parish Outreach program (one session already took place on Thursday and the second is to take place this Sunday afternoon), I was surprised to hear certain reactions. One person said, Are these listening sessions about us parishioners listening to what they have already decided? Another parishioner said, Why bother going to a listening session? They already know what they want to do. First of all, I really do want to listen to what you have to say about the placement of our parish outreach services, because wherever it will be placed, it involves a financial commitment on the part of the entire parish to make it happen. Secondly, I think there is a great blessing in being able to hear each other, because in the process of really listening to one another, we grow together as a more united family. Finally, I know that there are many people who will not be able to make either of these listening sessions. I am open to hear what you feel about the issue and will gladly receive your comments if you care to me : fathertony@saintbrigid.net. As I have been praying daily for God s plan for this parish to clearly unfold in this process, may I ask for your prayers as well. A heart free from worry... Father Tony: FatherTony@saintbrigid.net In today s gospel, Jesus says, Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear.... Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? When I read these words of Jesus, I imagine that there are many people whose life situation is so full of challenges that they could not possibly take Jesus seriously. The question is, however, do I take these words seriously? I have done a pretty good job in my life making sure that I was clothed and that I knew where my next meal was coming from. I have done remarkable work in making sure that all my human needs are being met. While I wouldn t say that I love mammon, I have certainly allowed money to calm any fears that I might have to face scarcity in my life. The fact of the matter is that I have never had to trust in God I mean really trust in Him. For the most part I lead a comfortable, worry-free life. And even in those moments when I have had to cry out for help, I really wasn t at the end of my rope before the tides turned in my favor. In short, because of my privileged status in life, I have never had to put these promises of Jesus to the test. But I know people who have people who have surrendered their lives to the providential care of their Father. I know people who not only take these words of Jesus seriously, but who know beyond the shadow of doubt from their own experience that God will care for them. Because of their deep faith, these people are a true joy to be around. They are life-giving and not draining, they are buoyant and not whining, they bring light into every situation. I want to be that kind of person. I want to be able to proclaim today s gospel not like someone who is just uttering a lot of pious platitudes ( don t worry, cheer up, everything s going to be fine! ), but like someone who knows from experience that God does deliver, will deliver and will never forsake us. So the question is this: how do I practice this kind of faith? How do I live my life in such a manner that it is evident that I take Jesus words in today s gospel seriously? First, I need to be aware of how much I am immersed in a culture that is addicted to drama. We baby boomers seem to overreact to events and situations with a greater intensity than people from our parents and grandparents generation. The bizarre, macabre and unusual is served up to us in the media as part of our daily diet. Secondly, I have to stop imagining the many potential outcomes that tomorrow might bring. God is giving me today the bread that I need for today. If that were not true, why would Jesus teach us to pray in such a manner? Finally, in all things give thanks. After all, the Evil One is allergic to praise! 3

13 When are we giving out ashes? For me, the heartwarming experience of Saint Brigid s is simply expressed in the phrase, Here comes everybody! Saint Brigid s stands in a wonderful tradition of opening it s doors, meeting people where they are at and allowing them to feel that here you are welcome, without judgment, no question asked. From what I have already heard, our parish motto, Here comes everybody is so strikingly evident on Ash Wednesday. Just as Jesus opened his heart to the crowds throughout his public ministry, our Church opens its doors to everyone this day, throughout the day. For this reason, I want to change the manner in which we celebrate this wonderful beginning of the season of Lent. We will distribute ashes at the usually scheduled daily Masses (7:00am, 9:00am and 12:10pm), and in addition at two evening Masses at 7:30pm (Mass in English in the Church and Mass in Spanish in Code Auditorium). All throughout the rest of the day (from 12:40 until 7:30pm), I will distribute ashes in the Church non-stop. The doors are open just walk in. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed as Jesus greets you. Sheets with readings from scripture will be available at the door to allow you to prepare your heart to receive this beautiful public sign of your desire to turn away from sin and be more faithful to the gospel. No structured prayer service just the awesome sign of all of us coming together in a non-stop procession before the Blessed Sacrament and seeking renewal in our lives. As in the past, whether you receive ashes during one of the scheduled Masses or during the course of the day in the Church, we invite you to take a small wooden cross and a prayer card. Both the cross and the card are something that you can keep with you throughout the holy season of Lent to remind you that we must open our hearts to the outpouring of sacrificial love offered us by Jesus, joining ourselves to his sacrifice throughout this holy season. Just a gentle reminder... Ash Wednesday is a day of both fast and abstinence. To sum up those requirements, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal. On days of fast, we may not eat between these meals. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. 11

17 Some Good News from Fr. Jason While watching the news or reading the newspaper have you ever had the feeling that there was not enough good news in the reporting? We know that the Gospel is the Good News, and when we live out the Gospel we are proclaiming that news. Well, I wanted to share with you some good news that comes directly from the youth here at Saint Brigid. On Friday, February 21st, Youth@SaintBrigid, accompanied by students and teachers from Sacred Heart Academy, participated in an event called Midnight Run. On the surface, a Midnight Run aids the homeless through the distribution of food, clothing, toiletries and other items. On a deeper level, a Midnight Run aims at establishing solidarity between those with homes and those without. By speaking with the homeless, those participating in a Midnight Run have a personal encounter with people so often forgotten, realizing the common humanity and dignity in those who are often stereotyped negatively. Indeed, Christ told us that when we serve the least of His brethren we are serving Him (Mt. 25). In this way, that is to say with eyes of faith, the encounter is not only with another person, but with the living Christ. The evening started with the students convening at the school around 5 PM. We sorted items for distribution, made sandwiches to give out to those whom they would meet, and shared prayer and a meal together. Around 9 PM we got into cars and went into Manhattan. There were around five stops that we made, all located in Midtown. As our caravan would pull to the curbside, we were greeted by the men and women we would serve, already gathered together along the sidewalk. With a joyful enthusiasm, the students would get out of the cars and begin conversation with those who were awaiting our arrival. As they would direct them over to the car that had the particular items the person was looking for, the youth learned about the person's life: their job, their family, and sometimes even why they ended up without a home. The love of Christ and the dutifulness of one who has been sent missioned beamed from the youth. It may have been night, but there was brightness radiating from those encounters. Some conversations had a depth friends seldom reach. Stop after stop, person after person, the youth worked with zeal and dedication. Sometimes they would take on special tasks, like preparing bags of food and soap and distributing them to the homeless who were sleeping, so that they didn't miss out on the donations. Others went into Penn Station to reach those who may have not known that we had stopped nearby. We finished up some time after 1 AM. The late hour was no impediment to the power of the evening's activities. Lives were changed, spirits were moved. I have been told personally by many of the students how they look forward to the next Run (which is in the Spring). My hope is that these students, like the Apostles, go out and share what they have heard, what they have seen with their eyes, what they looked upon and touched with their hands. Perhaps if you know one of them you can ask them about the Midnight Run. Perhaps if you know a young person not in Youth@SaintBrigid you can share this news with them. To end, let us consider words shared by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, in a message to the faithful of Buenos Aires on the occasion of the feast of Saint Cajetan: I sometimes ask people: 'Do you give alms?' They say to me: 'Yes, Father.' 'And when you give alms, do you look the person you are giving them to in the eye?' 'Oh, I don't know, I don't really notice.' 'Then you have not really encountered him. You tossed him the alms and walked off. When you give alms, do you touch the person's hand or do you throw the coin?.' 'No, I throw the coin.' 'So you did not touch him. And if you don't touch him you don't meet him'. To do this takes courage, it takes faith, it takes humility, it takes charity. And the students whom I had the joy of being with that evening looked and encountered, touched and met. Being a witness to these things, I share with you this little bit of good news from our own parish. To all of the students who participated in the recent Midnight Run, thank you for your Gospel witness. May God Bless You All, fr. Jason U. Grisafi 15
