2 Porsche Club News 4/14 Editorial Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Porsche Club Members The race held at the FIA World Endurance Championship WEC on the Interlagos circuit in São Paulo marked the first victory for the Porsche 919 Hybrid. At the same time, it was the eighth and therefore the final race held during the championships. Porsche did it: The first race won in an exciting and demanding début season a brilliant return after a 16-year absence. Porsche and the 919 Hybrid are ready to rise to the challenge once again at the FIA World Endurance Championship in Porsche will be in position at the starting line of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a third 919 Hybrid. Porsche has returned to endurance racing. Six podium spots, four pole positions and multiple lap records are a good starting point for the 2015 season. Dear Porsche Club Members! This issue marks the beginning of a new phase for our Porsche Club Magazine, which is published around the world. Years ago we decided to adapt the Porsche Club News to the new digital distribution channels and started sending it out as a PDF file. This has not only allowed us to reach a much larger number of Club members this format has also made it possible to continue changing the Porsche Club News over the years and therefore remain flexible and in step with the times. Now we are consciously taking the next step. The Porsche Club News of the future will not only be available in digital form, it will be an integral part of the digital media: The Porsche Club News is going online. That means that the Porsche Community Management s information medium will now also be a community medium. It will be an information platform about the Porsche Club world for the Porsche Club world, created in close collaboration between Porsche Community Management and the Porsche Clubs. We will be keeping the familiar and timetested segments from our previous PDF version. This means you will still be able to find all the relevant Porsche AG information, just as before. The Information Exchange will continue to inform you of the offers available from Porsche Sales and Marketing as a Porsche Service. And last but not least, our joint Club World will take an important, central position in the online version. However, we will also be venturing another essential step further. We view the online version of the Porsche Club News to be not only the best digital form of information for today digital media also unfailingly offer the potential to be used as an important medium of communication. This new platform offers the Porsche Club community the opportunity to get involved, actively participate in the community and exchange information with each other about past and upcoming events. That is the reason there will be a members-only Club area providing exclusive access for Club members. Porsche Clubs can have articles and announcements posted by the editorial staff here, and link them to their homepages. This gives the Porsche Clubs the opportunity to actively use the Porsche Club News for their events and for networking with the Porsche Club Community. The Club Presidents will be given their own area for Porsche Club Management. It will contain everything the Clubs and their leaders will need for their organisational work. The Porsche Community Management s central information medium will therefore be optimally equipped for the future and will become an important building block in Dr. Kjell Gruner Marketing Manager enhancing communication within the worldwide Porsche Club community. The sculpture will be erected on the roundabout in the centre of the intersection controlled by traffic lights on Porscheplatz. The aim is to achieve a visual link with the Porsche Museum by creating an interesting and living scenic impression and so providing an additional upgrade of the northern Stuttgart district. The work of art is approx. 24 m high and measures about 10 m around its base. It consists of three steles, each of which has a Porsche 911 perched on its top. The cars stem from various model years to document the history of the sports car icon, which has rolled off the production lines in Zuffenhausen for the past 50 years. The roundabout, previously covered with white gravel, will be grassed over and the sculpture will then appear to be striving upward from it. The position of the work of art does not contravene any existing traffic regulations or disturb the existing infrastructure. During the implementation phase, Porsche will co-operate closely with traffic authorities and take measures to allow traffic to flow undisturbed. Work will be performed outside peak traffic times and will therefore take place during the summer holidays in Currently, the company is working together with the City of Stuttgart to provide the general preconditions relating to planning law. The sculpture will be inaugurated in an official ceremony in autumn next year. 8 01 News from Porsche AG Porsche Club News 4/14 Exquisite luxury and particularly comprehensive standard features are on offer from the Porsche Panamera Exclusive Series. Finished in the Exclusive factory, the series is limited to 100 units worldwide. It is based on the Panamera Turbo S Executive, the 570 hp (419 kw) top version of the grand tourer with a long wheelbase and very generously proportioned rear passenger space. The world premiere takes place at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Being provided by Porsche for the first time on the Panamera Exclusive Series is a two-colour, graduated paintwork: below the door handles a contrast is created with the timeless deep black metallic paint by a chestnut brown metallic colour that runs in the background along the lines of the car to the rear. Each Panamera with the graduated paintwork is done by hand in order to ensure a harmonious blend of colour. The front air inlet grilles and the 20-inch wheels in the Sport Classic design are, for instance, also deep black metallic. The interior is also very elegantly finished. All of the seats and the lower door panels are covered in Poltrona Frau leather in the prestigious Italian brand s Agatha Chestnut Brown colour. The skins being used for the Panamera Exclusive Series are all hand-picked and exceptionally soft. In order to enable seat ventilation, the seats centre panels are perforated exclusively for this limited edition in the form of the Porsche crest. The upper door trim is in black milled nappa leather. Chestnut brown stitching in selected places create contrasting touches. Inspired by the two-colour exterior paintwork, the decorative interior trim elements also feature a blend of colours: a transition to the rear from classic walnut burl wood into a deep black piano lacquer surface. A world premiere is being given in the Panamera Exclusive Series to Porsche s newly developed Rear Seat Entertainment System Plus. Exclusive accessory: On request, a custom-fit luggage set is available for the Panamera made of the same high-quality leather as the interior, including the perforation. The main components of the multimedia system, fitted as standard in this limited edition, are two high-resolution 10.1-inch touchscreens in the back with built-in camera and integrated DVD player. The system facilitates comprehensive business and entertainment functions, including in combination with mobile Internet access. The sound is played out either via cordless headphones or the Burmester high-end surround sound system. In the interior of every vehicle of the Panamera Exclusive Series is a tag showing its individual limited edition number. On the outside handmade badges behind the front air intakes show like a signature that the vehicle originates from the Porsche Exclusive factory. As an optional extra, Porsche is offering a matching, five-piece luggage set, which is likewise made of high-quality Poltrona Frau leather and features both perforations in the shape of the Porsche crest and Exclusive Series embossing. The Porsche Panamera Exclusive Series is now available to be ordered and costs 249,877 Euro, including value added tax and countryspecific features. The limited series is available only as a left-hand drive car. Porsche Exclusive stands for the highest form of individualisation direct from the factory. Since its formation in 1986, limited editions have repeatedly showcased new design ideas and what is technically achievable. Completed by hand in the Porsche Exclusive factory, every vehicle underlines the manufacturer s craftsmanship and passion for detail. 9 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG Racing to a first victory FIA World Endurance Championship, WEC, LMP1 and GTE Pro Class A retrospective. First victory for the Porsche 919 Hybrid: Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb emerged victorious at the six-hour race at São Paulo with the innovative Le Mans prototype. It was the eighth and final run in the FIA World Endurance Championship WEC series. And it was only at the beginning of the season that Porsche returned to the top category of endurance racing after a 16-year absence. This development was already characterised by its rapid tempo less than two years passed between the decision to return to the top category of the sports car world championship 2011 and the Porsche 919 Hybrid s début drive on the manufacturer s own test track on the 12th of June During this period, a new office building and a workshop for Le Mans Class 1 (LMP1) prototypes were built at the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach. The team grew from zero to 230 racing sports experts, with 150 of them being engineers. And the most complex race car that Porsche has ever built came into being in record time. Leading the Porsche team are Fritz Enzinger (Head of LMP1), Alexander Hitzinger as Technical Director and Andreas Seidl as Team Principle. The racing début at Silverstone resulted in first place on the podium on the first attempt. At the second six-hour race in May at Belgium s Spa-Francorchamps, Porsche earned its first pole position. At the 24 hours of Le Mans, a Porsche 919 Hybrid led for a total of 37 laps, only to drop out due to engine damage just two hours before the finish line while it was still on track for second place. Despite the chaotic weather in Austin in September, the team was once again on course to win until a defect resulted in a loss of power. In October in Fuji, and in November in Shanghai, the team had two problem-free six-hour races and were thrilled about winning two more third places, and the second pole position in Shanghai. The seventh race saw them take the next step forward: after their third pole position, both driver teams stood proudly on the podium. The grand finale in São Paulo finally found them at the very top. 10 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG 1st race / Silverstone A successful racing début The eagerly anticipated racing premiere of the innovative Porsche 919 Hybrid at the sports car world championship WEC was a resounding success. The trio comprised of Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber grabbed a third place finish with the technically highly complex Le Mans prototype right at the start of the season at Britain s Silverstone. With 24 minutes of the scheduled six hours remaining, the race was called off due to heavy rain. After 165 laps on the kilometre course, Webber swept the 919 Hybrid across the finish line behind the safety car. The sister car driven by Romain Dumas (F), Neel Jani (CH) and Marc Lieb had to drop out of the race due to a defect after one hour and 15 minutes. The Porsche 911 RSR proved to be unbeatable in the GTE Pro class, despite difficult conditions. The Manthey Porsche team started off the season with a dual win. The Porsche works drivers Marco Holzer, Frédéric Makowiecki and Richard Lietz were victorious with their Porsche 911 RSR in the crowded GTE Pro class. Their works driver colleagues Patrick Pilet, Jörg Bergmeister and Nick Tandy won second place after a hard-fought contest in the opening race. The results of our return to the top class in endurance motor sports are nothing to sneeze at. The preparations, course of activities, and discipline in the pit and behind the steering wheel of the two Porsche 919 Hybrids were very good. I am really proud! 11 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG 2nd race / Spa-Francorchamps Pole position and fourth place Car number 14, driven by Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb, started from the pole position in Spa- Francorchamps and was able to claim the lead for a long time. But then incidents occurred which cost time: Dumas had to fix an electrical problem by using a reactivation process on the fly, and finally Jani was forced to make an additional pit stop due to a slow leak in a tyre. After winning a podium spot in the opening race in Silverstone, Number 14 then scored fourth place. The drivers Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber in the sister car, with number 20, had even less luck. Starting from fifth place, they quickly advanced to the third position, but were then forced to the back of the field by technical problems. Nevertheless, the Porsche team fulfilled what they declared to be their most important task for that weekend: to bring both LMP1 race cars across the finish line. In addition, the Porsche 919 Hybrid s pace was most impressive; it was the fastest car at Spa-Francorchamps for long stretches of the race. Jörg Bergmeister and Patrick Pilet, driving in the GTE Pro class, seized second place after a noteworthy catch-up chase. Their colleagues behind the wheel and Silverstone winners Marco Holzer and Frédéric Makowiecki finished sixth in the second 911 RSR. That was a weekend with lots of positive moments for example, the qualifying round and our lap times during the race. But today it also became apparent that we still need to improve in a few areas. 12 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG 3rd race / Le Mans Impressive performance After an impressive start by both 919 Hybrids, the Porsche team came away empty-handed after the dramatic final phase of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Car number 20 was denied it s just reward due to a power train failure. The second prototype suffered a setback due to a transmission problem. After an exciting start with constantly changing weather, numerous malfunctions and a comparatively quiet night, Timo Bernhard was able to advance the Porsche 919 Hybrid to the first position after 20 of the 24 hours. Still in the lead, he handed off the car to Mark Webber at 12:36 p.m. A scant 20 minutes later, the Australian slowed down, rolling back into the pit solely on electric power. The mechanics weren t able to repair the damage to the drivetrain. Scarcely a half-hour later, Marc Lieb s car suffered a transmission defect. Car number 14 was in fourth position when it was pushed back into the pit at 12:54 p.m. The Porsche 919 Hybrid returned to the track again shortly before the end of the race, but was not included in the evaluations either. In the equally hard-fought GTE Pro class, the Porsche 911 RSR driven by Marco Holzer, Frédéric Makowiecki and Richard Lietz took a third-place finish. We demonstrated outstanding team performance at our return to Le Mans. We almost realised our dream of concluding this legendary endurance race with a podium spot for the Porsche 919 Hybrid. We were even able to take the lead for an extended period of time. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone in the team, and to everyone who supported us, for their hard work. 13 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG 4th race / Austin Chaotic weather in Texas After a strong qualifying round and a long period leading the race, the two Porsche 919 Hybrids ended up in fourth and fifth place in Austin. Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb missed any chance of a podium spot in the final hour of the six-hour race on the Circuit of the Americas due to a loss of power affecting the drivetrain. They reached the finish line in front of Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber in the sister car. Dumas had started from second position and Webber from the third position. Torrential rain wrought havoc on the race after 100 minutes. Half a dozen cars spun off the flooded race track and stranded, including Timo Bernhard s Porsche with the number 20. The race was stopped for 45 minutes. After 105 laps, Jani handed off the first-placed car to Lieb. After the final fuel stop during the 133rd lap, a power loss occurred that cost the driver three positions in the final phase of the race. Bernhard resumed the race in the sister car with number 20, assuming fifth place after extricating himself from the gravel bed. He handed off the car to Hartley at the end of the 90th lap with the car in fourth place. Webber took over again for the final 30 minutes and crossed the finish line with the Porsche 919 Hybrid in fifth place. The Porsche 911 RSR driven by Porsche works drivers Patrick Pilet and Frédéric Makowiecki took second place in the GTE Pro class. Nick Tandy and Jörg Bergmeister were in the lead up until 85 minutes before the finish. They then lost two rounds because the car wouldn t start up right away after a pit stop due to an electrical problem, and ended the race in fourth place. It was a weekend that was a source of encouragement until shortly before the end. We battled long and hard for victory, but unfortunately, were ultimately unable to reap the fruits of our labour. 14 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG 5th race / Fuji The second podium spot The Porsche Team celebrated their second place on the podium at the six-hour race in Fuji, Japan. The driver trio with start number 20, Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber, captured podium position 3. Moreover, Mark Webber drove the fastest lap (lap 12) in 1.27,759 minutes on the kilometre Fuji Speedway. The Porsche 919 Hybrid number 14 driven by Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb finished in fourth place. Starting driver Mark Webber was fighting for the lead when damage caused a flat tyre after ten laps, forcing him to a premature stop. He subsequently emptied two tankfuls of fuel with the same set of tyres before handing off to Timo Bernhard after 84 laps. The Saarland native finished a double stint, but did, however, change the tyres during a fuel stop after 122 laps. Brendon Hartley took over after 160 laps. He made his last stop to refuel and change tyres at the end of his 197th lap and crossed the finish line in third place. Bad luck for the Porsche team Manthey in Fuji: The Porsche 911 RSR with the start number 92 forfeited any chance of a top placement shortly after the start of the race. Starting promisingly from the second row, Patrick Pilet was involved in a collision through no fault of his own. The repair work took a total of seven rounds to complete. Patrick Pilet then gave chase from the back of the GT field, ultimately finishing the race together with his compatriot Frédéric Makowiecki in sixth place. The second 911 RSR ended up two positions ahead with Jörg Bergmeister and Richard Lietz, who drove their first race together in Fuji for the Porsche Team Manthey. Naturally, it s a good result for us. I m especially proud of the progress we were able to show here. The start on Friday was indeed difficult, but we were able to improve with every training run, showed a great qualifying result and also realised our potential during the race. 15 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG 6th race / Shanghai A successful weekend For the third time in the season, the Porsche 919 Hybrid completed a race with a podium position. In Shanghai, Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb drove from pole position to third place. The sister vehicle, driven by Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber, crossed the finish line in sixth place. Up until the 33rd lap, the innovative 919 Hybrid was able to assert itself with two cars in the lead. Romain Dumas started with number 14 in the pole position and led the first 21 laps before Number 20 took the lead. At the end of the 64th lap, he handed off to Marc Lieb with the car in third place behind the leading Toyota. Lieb maintained this position and handed the car over to Neel Jani in the 126th race lap. The Swiss native drove into the pit for the last time at lap 158 before securing a third-place finish. Brendon Hartley started with number 20 from the third position and advanced to second place. In the 22nd lap the New Zealander overtook Romain Dumas and was in the lead until his pit stop after 33 laps. Just one round later he reported a flat tyre, and he had to return back to the pit at a very slow pace. As a result, he fell back to sixth place. Timo Bernhard took over after 66 laps, and after 128 laps handed off to Mark Webber who crossed the finish line in sixth place. Porsche also had great success in the GT class: The Porsche Team Manthey 911 RSR grabbed the second dual win of the season. The French Porsche works drivers Frédéric Makowiecki and Patrick Pilet crossed the finish line as the winners after 167 laps. Second place was secured by their works driver colleagues Jörg Bergmeister and Richard Lietz. Pole position and podium during the same racing weekend that is the first time we have done it. 16 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG 7th race / Bahrain Strong duo Major success in Bahrain: For the first time, both Porsche 919 Hybrid driver teams were able to take part in the award ceremony. Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb won second place. Their sister car finished right behind them: The trio comprised of Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber completed the race in third place. Romain Dumas started from the pole position with number 14 and held onto the lead until being overtaken by a Toyota during the fifth lap. He was able to reclaim and maintain the lead until the first stop after 30 laps. The Porsche 919 was in second place when he handed it off to Marc Lieb after 61 laps. After 123 laps, Neel Jani then assumed control of the car. The Swiss native drove confidently across the finish line in second place. Brendon Hartley started the race from position three with number 20 and advanced to second place before falling back to fourth place behind the two Toyotas. Problems with excessively high brake temperatures were soon encountered. When he handed the Porsche 919 off to Timo Bernhard after 48 laps, number 20 was in third place. Bernhard was in the lead both times he made a pit stop during the 79th and 110th laps. Upon stopping for the second time, he handed off to Mark Webber. Despite an intense pursuit, it was the first time the Porsche 911 RSR did not achieve a place on the podium this season after the strong double victory in Shanghai. The Porsche works drivers Jörg Bergmeister and Richard Lietz came in fourth, their French works driver colleagues Frédéric Makowiecki and Patrick Pilet, the winners at Shanghai, drove their number 92 car to a fifth place finish. Unbelievable that after the third pole position today, we succeeded in improving yet again by winning two podium spots. Most important of all: We were able to improve our speed in the race and came closer to the front of the pack. In the end, we tried it in a double stint with number 20. 17 Porsche Club News 4/14 01 News from Porsche AG 8th race / Sao paulo First victory for the Porsche 919 Hybrid At the final race in São Paulo, the Porsche team, comprised of the trio Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb, captured its win first for the Porsche 919 Hybrid in dramatic conditions. The biggest success went hand-in-hand with the biggest scare of the début season when Mark Webber was involved in an accident with the sister vehicle a scant half-hour before the end of the six-hour race. The Australian, who shared the start number 20 with Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley, slammed into the track wall on the 239th lap, in sixth place and half an hour before the start and finish line. He was taken to hospital for observation. Neel Jani concluded the race in first place behind the safety car. In the end, it was a successful season finale for the Porsche Team Manthey: The French Porsche works drivers Frédéric Makowiecki and Patrick Pilet captured second place in the GTE Pro class with a strong performance in the Porsche 911 RSR. With that additional podium placement, they rounded off the positive season results which included, among other things, two double victories at Silverstone and Shanghai. Porsche secured runner-up status in the constructor s championship ranking. The season finale was not quite as successful for the second 911 RSR with drivers Jörg Bergmeister and Richard Lietz. After a difficult qualifying run, they were unable to step into the battle for victory from a fourth position start, and also had bad luck due to a tyre losing air and a stop-and-go penalty after a collision. In the end they scored sixth place. This weekend, we were able to show what we learned in our début year. From tyre usage to the pit stops and the procedures within the team we were in good form in all aspects. Many thanks to all of those who contributed their share both here at the race track and at home in Weissach. Mission 2014 has come to a close. Now we are looking forward to the coming season. That is Porsche Travel Club. For almost 20 years. The driving experience offered by Porsche is a truly exceptional one, on some unusual routes worldwide and combined with a high degree of exclusivity. Participants stay in the world s best hotels and eat at the best local addresses. The tours are divided into three travel categories. An exhibition by and with Udo Lindenberg Udo Lindenberg is Germany s best-known rock musician. He can look back on a 40-year career in the music business. Decades that have made him into an unmistakable brand. Like Porsche, he is unique. From the 1st of February to the 12th of April, his life and the history of sports cars will be combined in the special exhibition Porsche. Panic. Power. at the Porsche Museum. He does his own thing. His concerts fill stadiums. Discussing issues in society doesn t leave him cold; he puts his oar in and doesn t mince his words. At almost 70, his work and his aura continues to inspire young artists. Like Porsche, he is unique. In the Porsche Museum, his life and the history of the sports cars are united in the special exhibition Porsche. Panik. Power. Lindenberg has also been exploring his talents as a painter for more than 20 years. He is now considered Germany s most successful pop artist. His speciality is also painting with liqueur. The result is the Likörelle ( liqueur colour ), an invention he has patented around the world. In addition to pictures, Likörellen and installations, the exhibition also shows a number of pieces from his private collection. Stages of his career, his involvement in social causes and his artistic work all of this can be found in the exhibition. Udo Lindenberg embodies German artistic and contemporary history. We have set ourselves the standard of achieving the best possible results with regard to long service life and visual originality. Development is accompanied by intensive tests which ensure that a switch panel is fit for day-to-day use, even before production begins. In the first step, the component was measured photographically using defined points. In the climate chamber, the Top: Switch panel with 111 measuring points. When a second measurement was then taken, possible changes to the measuring points could be determined. This allowed conclusions to be drawn about a possible twisting of the panel over the years, as well as the formation of blisters and cracks. Using the re- sults, the production of the component was optimised to counteract deformations and the formation of blisters and cracks. The switch panel s top figures and special production process are impressive. The switch panel achieves these top figures not only with regard to climatic resistance. Original drawings have allowed the Porsche Classic experts to redesign a component that is identical to the original in terms of its dimensions, the surface structure, the ribbing, sheen and degree of black, as well as the touch and feel. A special production process that lives up to the Made in Germany promise and which combines the different materials perfectly with one another ensures a high-quality product. Depending on the 911 variant, the scope of supply of course also includes the loudspeaker grilles, which are manufactured using the same process and which are offered separately.
