Form 40 Needed? (Double-click one box.) Send Form 40 to PNC Registrar after Senate approval of document. 13-C-63 Biology/Chemistry Vanessa Quinn, Acad. Prog. Coord. No Double-click to check / No. No New courses or any course change, check YES. For all other curriculum matters, check NO. Unless marked Leave blank all parts of this form must be filled in before sending to Secretary of the Faculty. Subject. (Brief description of proposed change, addition or deletion.) New Professional Science Master s degree (PSM) (with a concentrations in either Business, Biotechnology, or Education) Justification. (Briefly list main reasons for proposed change, addition or deletion.) PNC has no graduate programs for students interested in advancing their education in the sciences in general, or biological sciences in particular. Demand for such a degree is constant. The populations of students that will be served by this degree include: high school teachers working in the Concurrent Enrollment program, who require graduate courses in biology and chemistry; graduates interested in professional programs (i.e., dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine) who require additional course work before applying to these programs; graduates working in local laboratory facilities whose careers would be enhanced by additional coursework in the biological sciences and business skills. Use the Current and Proposed spaces below for course changes only. Otherwise, mark N/A. Current: (Course changes: present catalog info.) None new degree Proposed: (Course changes: new catalog information.) N/A Please see attached Program Catalog Document (PCD) and Degree Requirements List (DRL) Course Objectives. (For new courses only. List main learning objectives. If lengthy, attach as separate page.) N/A Impact on Students. (State N/A if proposal will not greatly affect students.) As described above, there are several groups of potential students in the PNC service area that would be well served by a graduate degree in science. This is even truer if that degree could be applied directly to their career progression/ advancement. By providing a flexible graduate degree with multiple options and tracks, we hope to create a sustainable program that can be closely matched to individual student needs. Impact on University Resources. (State N/A if proposal will not require new resources, faculty or funds.) In order to meet the needs of working students or students living far from the PNC campus, several of the courses (in all subject areas) will need to be delivered in a distance learning format or available through Purdue Calumet. To support students in creating a multi-institution plan of study, a PSM Director will need to be appointed that will work with the West Lafayette and Calumet campuses, other involved departments and employers to ensure that courses will be available. The Director will match students with their internship, and support the industry and student through the two semesters of experiential learning, and will also be responsible for assessment and data collection. Initially, the PSM Director will need to be appointed with a ¼-time release for each 6 students they are advising. PSM program assessment will be developed to track PSM graduates and their progress.

2 While a suite of graduate-level courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Business are already approved at PNC (Appendix I and II), there is a need for faculty at PNC that can teach courses in the Structure-Function area; we hope to address this need through faculty hires over the next two years. These faculty hires are primarily needed to support the BS in Biology. Additionally, to support the students in this program, 1-2 graduate teaching assistantships will be provided by the biology department. An office for these graduate students will be necessary. Impact on other Academic Units. (State N/A if proposal will not affect other units.) We would expect enrollment increases in courses associated with PNC s MBA program and some West Lafayette online courses (e.g., Education), but not to an extent that would exceed current capacity or require additional sections. Students pursuing one of the professional skills options (see Program Catalog Document) that involve graduate coursework from the College of Business can be accommodated in those courses quite easily. No Department Chair impact statement attached No Dean impact statement attached No Registrar impact statement attached

3 PROGRAM CATALOG DOCUMENT Professional Science Master in Biology Graduate study in the sciences can contribute to a student s career development in many ways. A Professional Science Master s (PSM) degree is designed to allow students to pursue advanced training in biology while developing workplace skills important to employers. Unlike the more traditional MS/MA degrees, the PSM is an applied program designed to fill regional needs in a variety of technology, management and supervision roles. Students receive traditional training in the sciences, but also develop business or educational skills (such as organization, management and communication) that are increasingly beneficial in a wide range of technological, educational, governmental and not-for-profit settings. The PSM program consists of two years of academic training in one of several tracks (concentrations), supplemental training in business or education to develop career skills, and an internship component. The entire program for each student will be developed in concert with employers in the community. The Professional Science Master s will be useful for students interested in ecology/restoration work, naturalists, and high school teachers interested in further developing their ability to teach advanced biology topics. The program may also be of interest for students applying to professional programs, those working in quality control or biotechnology, and laboratory technicians who are seeking management opportunities. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Professional Science Master s in Biology Required Courses (36 credits) Biology Core (18 credits) Structure and Function elective (3-4 credits) Cell and Molecular elective (3-4 credits) Evolution elective (3-4 credits) Ecology and the Environment elective (3-4 credits) Additional electives as required to complete meet the 18-credit requirement (All courses will be selected from a list of approved graduate courses in Biology [Appendix I], in consultation with a faculty mentor or the PSM Program Director.) Professional Skills Component (12 credits) Students will choose from one of the options below [courses listed in Appendix II], in consultation with their employer or a faculty mentor and the PSM Program Director, in accordance with the student s career goals: Option 1 Foundational Core (Phase I from PNC s MBA Program) Option 2 Organizational Leadership and Supervision (Courses selected from a list of approved graduate courses in Organizational Leadership and Supervision in consultation with a faculty mentor or the PSM Program Director.) Option 3 Education (Courses selected from a list of approved graduate courses in Education in consultation with a faculty mentor or the PSM Program Director.) Experiential Learning Component (6 credits) Students will design and undertake a capstone project that will be supervised collaboratively by faculty and employers or internship mentors, in consultation with the PSM Program Director.

4 At the outset, a number of possible tracks will be available for students seeking the PSM degree. These include: Ecology Students interested in working in ecological restoration and habitat management. Potential employers for this track include environmental consulting firms such as Cardno/J. F. New. Naturalist Students interested in working in natural resources interpretation and education. Potential employers include the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Porter County Parks and Recreation, and others. Science education High school teachers interested in working in Concurrent Enrollment with PNC. (This is likely the biggest pool of potential students.) Potential employers include area high schools. Other potential tracks to be considered in the future might include: Biology/Business Physiology/Health Sciences/Pre-professional Biotechnology Supervision Chemistry Supervision Appendix I Graduate (500- and 600- level) courses for Biology Core Structure and Function Electives BIOL Biology of Invertebrate Animals 3 credits (PNC, BIOL Functional Human Anatomy 4 credits BIOL Principles of Neurobiology 4 credits ( BIOL Eukaryotic Microbiology 3 credits ( BIOL Bacterial Physiology 3 credits BIOL Parasitology 4 credits BIOL Medical Microbiology 3 credits (PNC, BIOL Laboratory in Medical Microbiology 2 credits (PNC, BIOL Immunobiology 3 credits BIOL Physiology II 3 credits ( BIOL Immunology 3 credits ( BIOL Development biology 3 credits (PNC; BIOL Laboratory in development biology 1 credits BME Biosensors: Fundamentals and Applications 3 credits (West Lafayette) BME Measurement and Stimulation of the Nervous System 3 credits (West Lafayette) BME Tissue Engineering 3 credits (West Lafayette) BME Biomaterials 3 credits (West Lafayette) Cell and Molecular Electives BIOL Principles of Molecular Biology 3 credits ( BIOL Recombinant DNA Techniques 3 credits ( BIOL Molecular Biology of Bacteria 3 credits ( BCHM General Biochemistry I 3 credits (PNC) BCHM General Biochemistry II 3 credits (PNC) CHM Introduction to Biochemistry 3 credits (PNC, CHM Biochemistry Lab 1 credit ( CHM Fundament Organic Chemistry 3 credits ( CHM Industrial Organic Chemistry 3 credits ( CHM Organic Chemistry 3 credits ( Evolution Electives BIOL Evolution 3 credits (PNC, BIOL Teaching Evolution 3 credits (West Lafayette) BIOL Biogeography 3 credits ( BIOL The Evolution of Behavior 3 credits (PNC) BIOL Sex and Evolution 3 credits (PNC)
