Using XenData Software and a Spectra Logic Archive With the Video Edition of XenData Archive Series software on a Windows server and a Spectra Logic T-Series digital archive, broadcast organizations have a digital video system ideal for the demanding requirements of the broadcast industry. This integrated digital content archive solution is high performance, typically writing and reading at ten times real-time. It is nonproprietary, however, presenting the Spectra Logic digital archive as a standard Windows file system that allows it to be used by multiple applications. In addition, the Spectra Logic T-Series tape archives are highly scalable from 350 hours to more than hours at 25 Mb/sec. The highly reliable archive solution provides your staff with unmatched hands-on management and maintenance. This paper discusses system architecture, video file management options, and digital tape format and library choices XenData/Spectra Logic Limited. All rights reserved.

1. Introduction Broadcasting is rapidly moving from video tape to a digital environment. It is generally accepted that digital automation and delivery offer better performance and lower costs than traditional analogue approaches. When it comes to video archiving, retaining the historical material as files and storing those files on magnetic disk arrays (RAID) and digital tape offers the same benefits. Using the Video Edition of XenData Archive Series software managing a Spectra T-Series digital archive and RAID cache on a Windows Server platform creates a high performance digital video archive. The XenData solution typically writes and retrieves video files at 30 MB per second or more, representing data transfers at approximately ten times real-time for video recorded at 25 Mb per second. The solution is very well integrated into the Windows server environment, presenting the Spectra T-Series digital tape library, including the Spectra T950 library, as a standard Windows file system. This nonproprietary approach means that the archive can be used by multiple applications and does not tie the user to any particular asset management solution. At the same time, the Spectra T-Series tape archive provides high reliability and constant access to your media assets, along with unmatched hands-on flexibility, with an architecture that lets broadcast engineers optimize, upgrade, and maintain the archive. 2. System Architecture Considerations Digital Video Archive Network Configuration A digital video archive server running XenData software presents a Spectra Logic digital tape library, such as a Spectra T950 library, and RAID cache as a single Windows logical drive letter. The combined storage within the Spectra T950 library and RAID effectively appear as a single, very large capacity magnetic disk. This means that no special interface is required and the video archive will work with multiple standard applications without modification. Digital Video Archive Server Network Configuration Windows Server 2003 running XenData software FC. SCSI, or iscsi RAID cache Spectra T950 Archive Windows Clients The digital video archive server is available over the network as a standard shared logical drive letter. 2

A basic network configuration is shown above, showing a Spectra T950 digital tape library connected to the server through either a SCSI, iscsi, or Fibre Channel interface (SAN). The RAID cache may be implemented any number of ways, for example as direct-attached SATA disk arrays or from a SAN. The Video Edition of XenData software is optimised for transferring large files over the network via FTP or the standard Windows network protocol, CIFS. Other network protocols are supported, but FTP and CIFS are recommended for high-performance digital video applications. Combining Asset Management and the Digital Archive Digital Asset Management (DAM) provides indexing of digital material and the ability to search and retrieve the assets of interest. The asset management system stores the indexed material as files which are held in one or more digital video archives. XenData software creates a virtual digital video archive, managing a Spectra T-Series tape archive, such as the Spectra T950 library, and RAID cache, and presenting these physical storage devices as a standard Windows file system. Furthermore the software provides hierarchical storage management, data protection via tape cartridge replication, partial read capabilities, and file security. Archive Server & DAM Server Network Configuration Digital Video Archive Server Automation / Digital asset Management Server Video Files are available to all authorized Users Communication between the asset management server and the archive server occurs over the network via FTP or the standard Windows protocol (CIFS). The DAM and digital video archive software may each have a dedicated server, as illustrated in the configuration shown above. Alternatively, the DAM and video archive software may reside on the same server. Regardless of where the RAID cache and the Spectra T950 tape archive reside on the network, they are seen as part of the Windows file system and are readily managed by the video archive software. 3

3. Hardware Options Choosing Hardware to Implement the Digital Archive Three hardware units are required to effectively implement a digital archive system: the tape library that is the physical digital archive for large quantities of data; the server that runs the XenData software, and the RAID cache that permits quick data retrieval. The digital archive may support any of several types of digital tape. Supporting Hardware Digital tape library RAID cache 1 TB cache recommended Windows Server GB RAM recommended Digital tape supported by library Support for multiple drives and large storage capacity recommended Digital archive system components Choosing a Digital Tape Format Until recently, specialised tape formats were used to meet the performance requirements of professional digital video. This is no longer the case, as mid-range tape formats that were developed for the general IT industry more than meet these performance needs. All of the leading tape formats use very stable materials and are available with a media archival lifetime of 30 years. This represents a huge advance compared to conventional video tapes, which have much shorter lifetimes. Two leading mid-range formats are ideal for digital video: SAIT and LTO-3. Their characteristics are summarized below. Tape Format SAIT-1 LTO-3 Capacity per cartridge (Native capacity i.e. without compression) 500 GB 400 GB Equivalent hours recording per cartridge at 25 Mbps 44.4 hours 35.5 hours Equivalent hours recording per cartridge at 50 Mbps 22.2 hours 17.7 hours Maximum Data Transfer Rate in Megabytes per second (without compression) 30 MB/s 80 MB/s Media Archival Lifetime 30 years 30 years 1 1 LTO-3 Media lifetime may depend on the manufacturer. Please check with your vendor. 4

SAIT (Super Advanced Intelligent Tape) was developed by Sony and has a strong market share in digital video applications. At 500 GB, it offers the highest capacity per cartridge. Using a recording bit rate of 25 Mbps, this is equivalent to 44.4 hours per cartridge. More information about this format is available from The 500 GB capacity of a SAIT tape cartridge is equivalent to over 44 hours recorded at 25 Mbps. LTO (Linear Tape Open), also known as Ultrium, is now in its third generation. It is the most popular midrange tape format in the general IT market and combines high capacity with very high data transfer rates. LTO-3 cartridges have a capacity of 400 GB, equivalent to over 35 hours recording at 25 Mbps. LTO tape drives are manufactured by three vendors: Certance, HP, and IBM. More information is available from The LTO alliance gives you greater choice in media vendors, and helps ensure a long lifetime for the format. Choosing a Tape Library as a Digital Archive Once one or more digital tape formats are selected, choose among libraries that support the media. 2 SAIT and LTO-3 tape formats are supported by the Spectra Logic T-Series libraries (the Spectra T950, Spectra T120, and Spectra T50 libraries). These libraries meet optimum recommendations for digital archives and can expand readily to keep up with the growth of digital archival data. The T-Series family of libraries provides very dense storage, letting you store a lot data in a small space. Spectra T-Series libraries support capacities from a few hundred hours (that is, a few terabytes) up to more than hours (that is, multiple petabytes) of assets. Drives can be easily added; they are slide-in, hot-swap components that take under three minutes to install. The capacity and drive capabilities of the T-Series family of tape libraries are described here: Model No. of Drives No. of Tapes Capacity/Bytes Capacity/Hours Drive Types T Terabytes ~ 1777 hours LTO-2, LTO-3 T Terabytes ~ 4300 hours LTO2, LTO-3, SAIT T Terabytes ~ hours LTO-2, LTO-3, SAIT Note: All above numbers are based on LTO-3 media at 400 GB per cartridge. 2 A current list of the tape libraries supported by XenData is available from 5

Multiple factors go into selecting the right digital archive configuration, including these: Capacity: If your media assets fit within a small tape archive, such as the Spectra T50 library, you may choose for cost reasons to limit the archive to one tape drive. In this case, be very careful in setting file management policies to prevent the single drive becoming a bottleneck and degrading performance. When only one drive is present, you will probably need a large RAID cache. Further, set the archive up so that only one set of tapes is configured, and tape replication is scheduled at a time when there is no other writing or reading activity. Also, select an archive, such as the Spectra T50 library, that expands to handle the continuing growth of digital assets. Performance: With two tape drives, the concern over tape drive bottleneck is much less severe than for a single drive system. Even so, we recommend that only one tape set should be configured. Management: Look for features that make the tape archive easy to use. The Spectra Logic tape archives provide a large colour touch-screen that displays a graphical interface, making the library very easy to manage. The same interface is also displayed through a Web login, making it easy to manage both XenData software and the Spectra Logic tape library from the same location. Management features are especially important in larger libraries, such as those with three or more drives, which are recommended for large archives. XenData software and Spectra archives intelligently manage many drives, allowing simultaneous writing and multiple file accesses. With three or more drives, the administrator can configure the library to store multiple tape sets separately and can group related files together on the same set of tapes, if required. Reliability: The Spectra T-Series tape archives are highly reliable and easily maintained, with maintenance options that let broadcast engineering staff service the library themselves, without requiring on-site visits from professional services staff. The Assisted Self-Maintenance (ASM) option provides a cache of parts on-site that staff can install in minutes, requiring at most a screwdriver. The library monitors its own health and performance, letting staff know when maintenance is required, and automatically creating messages about potential issues that can then be sent to a site s IT staff and to Spectra Logic SpectraGuard support. Flexibility: Look for archives that supply a wide range of features. For example, the Spectra T950 and Spectra T120 libraries support automatic AES-256 encryption, which adds another layer of protection to the assets stored on media within the archive unit. The Spectra T-Series archives can also support multiple applications at one time using partitions; you can configure a single Spectra archive so that the archive looks to the outside world as multiple archives. This can be useful in multiple ways. For example, with partitions, the IT staff can backup to one portion, or partition, of the library; the rest of the library can be devoted to media assets. The portion of the archive dedicated to media assets can be further configured with additional virtual libraries (partitions), one for each set of data or type of asset. Server and RAID Hardware With large files written to a server running XenData software, the data transfer rates for both writing and reading are typically limited only by network speed or by the tape drives. For example, with SAIT drives, 1 GB Ethernet, and a 2.4 GHz dual processor, sustainable transfer rates of over 30 MB/s are easily achievable. The minimum server hardware requirements are available from Even a modest specification server will deliver high performance. However, it is important that the server has sufficient RAM. A minimum of 1 GB is required, but 4 GB is recommended. The required capacity of the RAID cache is very dependent on the HSM and replication policies that are set by the system administrator. However, in most implementations at least 1 TB of cache is recommended. 6

4. Choosing File Management Policies HSM and Data Protection Administrator Settings The system administrator defines policies that determine where data files are physically stored on the digital video archive. These policies support hierarchical storage management (HSM) and automatic tape cartridge replication. XenData Archive Series software supports three main levels of storage hierarchy: Online with one instance of a file on RAID and, in addition, there will typically be one or more instances on tape. In this case the file will be retrieved from RAID when accessed over the network. Nearline with at least one instance of a file on tape within the library and no instance on RAID. When a near-line file is accessed over the network, the XenData software automatically transfers the file from tape to RAID cache. As soon as the file transfer to RAID starts, the file is also transferred over the network. Offline with no instance on RAID and one or more instances of a file on tape, all of which have been exported from the tape library. Data protection is achieved by automatically generating multiple instances of a file. The XenData software can automatically produce copies of digital tapes for offsite retention. A single server may have many different policies, tailored to the needs of the different file types that are being archived. A typical XenData file management policy is illustrated in the diagram below. This example illustrates how physical file storage is driven by administrator defined policies. Note the automatic generation of multiple file copies for high data integrity. At all times, the file is available to be read over the network. 7

Keeping Proxies Online XenData software stores the video files on RAID and digital tape according to policies set by the administrator. Policies determine how long files will be retained on RAID, and these RAID retention rules may be tailored to the different file types that are being archived. This means that low resolution proxies can be kept permanently online on RAID, whereas the high-resolution broadcast media can be held nearline on digital tapes within the library. Enabling Partial Read XenData software manages very large files by using controlled file fragmentation. The administrator can optionally define policies that split large files into multiple fragments. This is performed by the XenData software in a way that is hidden from the applications that are reading and writing files, and it is particularly useful for multi-gigabyte files. With digital video applications there is often a need to read only a portion of a very large file. For example, consider reading a portion a 20 GB file that has been archived with a policy that splits it into forty 500 MB fragments. In this case, when a portion of a file is being read from tape, the software instructs the drive to rapidly seek to the start of the first fragment that contains the required portion of the file. The system then only retrieves the fragments that contain the requested data. Without the controlled fragmentation provided by the XenData software, the complete 20 GB file would have to be read from tape, which would take many minutes. In practice, this approach of using controlled file fragmentation is very easy to implement and greatly enhances performance when dealing with large files. Setting File Permissions XenData Archive Series software integrates fully with the Microsoft Windows security model, based on Active Directory. Files and directories have administrator-definable security attributes just as they do with standard Microsoft file systems, and access control checks are performed in the same way. This means that no special or proprietary setup is required for configuring file permissions. 8

5. Operational Considerations Tape Library Maintenance XenData Archive Series software monitors the alerts provided by the drives within the tape library, and it logs warning and error conditions in the Microsoft event log and XenData Management Console as appropriate. The Spectra tape archives also self-monitor, reporting alerts to the broadcast engineer, and optionally to SpectraGuard Support to proactively address issues as they arise, letting you maximize uptime. Periodically, drives require cleaning using a tape cleaning cartridge. XenData and Spectra Logic recommend that at least one tape cleaning cartridge is held within the tape library. The cleaning cartridge will be located within a regular tape cartridge slot, and, when cleaning is required, the library will issue an alert that prompts the XenData software to automatically undertake a cleaning cycle. System Training XenData Archive Series software is very tightly integrated into the Microsoft server operating system: The main administration console is a Microsoft Management Console snap-in. It has three main sections addressing the setting of file management policies, tape management policies and system diagnostics. Event logging is fully integrated into the Microsoft computer management system. Event logs appear in a dedicated XenData Event Viewer section. File and directory security attributes are defined just as they are with standard Microsoft file systems. Consequently, for an administrator familiar with Windows Server 2003, the training required is only a few hours. 9
