10 for the Master General Health Sciences. During the internship or research project students will focus on one or more aspects in the field of nutrition and health. Students are advised to think in advance about a course programme that gives a good preparation for the internship or research project that they would like to do. Within the programme Nutrition and Health students can focus on one of three possible directions. Students interested in nutrition and prevention can combine courses from the programme Nutrition and Health and the programme Prevention and Public Health. This will prepare students for projects in Public Health settings related to nutrition (e.g. GG&GD, TNO, RIVM, food industry). Students can focus on nutrition in the clinical setting by choosing the courses Nutrition in Health and Diseases and Nutrition in Clinical practice to prepare for projects on clinical nutrition research and (nutrition related) clinical policy (e.g. hospital, university medical centers, food industry specialised in clinical nutrition). A combination of the course Nutrition and Infectious Disease with courses from the programme Infectious Disease and Public Health and/or International Public Health can prepare for projects in the field of nutrition and infectious disease or nutritional problems in developing countries (e.g. KIT, RIVM, university medical centers, WHO). However, these examples are not complete and students can choose their own focus within the requirements for the specialisation Nutrition and Health and the MSc Health Sciences. Portrait, dr. B. van den Berg Lecture, Computer lab Course objective The objective of this course is to develop students' health economics skills, in particular, to translate health economics into health policy. This course focuses on two major fields of health care: cure and care. In the cure sector managed competition (the Dutch health insurance model) was introduced in Parts of the care sector were in 2007 decentralised to the local governments and the long-term care insurance system is in transformation towards a more client-centred system. Central questions of this course are: What do economists expect the market to accomplish? How to determine what should and should not be covered by basic health insurance? Does long-term care differ from cure adopting an economic perspective? Equity: Is the (more competitive) health market equitable and how can we measure equity in health care? Next to these general questions there will be two streams of policy applications: Cure and managed competition (the Dutch health insurance acts); Long-term care and the discussion about the future of the Dutch compulsory long-term care insurance (AWBZ). After successful completion of this course: You will have knowledge about the economic theory of market competition and efficienc; You are able to recognize and apply theoretical knowledge on case studies within the Dutch managed competition model and in long-term care; You are able to use and apply the economic approach to equity measurement. Course content During this course we will not just focus on transfers of theoretical and practical knowledge but also aim at supporting the development of specific skills. These skills include writing a policy paper as opposed to a scientific paper, writing, presenting and defending a policy document from the perspective of a stakeholder in health care and writing an essay. To develop an understanding of disability and the issues faced by people with disabilities To develop knowledge and skills for disability research, policy development and management related to disability, rehabilitation and development To acquire insight into the epidemiology of disability, with separate attention for important determinants like gender, poverty and HIV/AIDS To learn how to use relevant models of disability and the conceptual framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) To understand the importance of human rights in relation to disability and to learn to use the UN Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for advocacy and other rights-based interventions To acquire skills and knowledge in measurement and research methods relevant to disability To understand the importance of inter-sectoral collaboration To gain insight in participatory approaches Course content The Disability and Development (D&D) course focuses on a broad range of issues related to disability and rehabilitation in the context of development. This means that the focus is on people with disabilities in low and middle-income countries. Disability affects an estimated 600 million people worldwide, the majority of whom live in low and middle-income countries. The large majority are poor and have no access to rehabilitation services; neither are facilities in place to allow them to be included in the mainstream of society. To date, very few services and programmes are available to address these needs. The realisation that the Millennium Development Goals cannot be met without addressing the needs of people with disability has brought a new impetus to the field concerned with these issues, disability and development. Another major recent development was the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in December It is expected that there will be a substantial increase in demand for training of a large variety of professionals (e.g. researchers, managers, architects, lawyers, health professionals) with formal training and qualifications in the field of disability and development. This rapidly increasing interest in disability as a development and human rights issue means that this emerging field of study will rapidly gain in importance and should become part of any serious higher education in social and development studies and in international public health. The course will cover essential knowledge and skills in this subject. During this 4-week course the following subjects will be discussed: Disability models and stereotypes, culture and disability, ICF conceptual framework, experience of having a disability, frequencies and distribution of disability, determinants of disability, including stigma and discrimination, poverty, gender and HIV/AIDS, rights of persons with disabilities, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, measurement of disability, disability-relevant research methods, survey methods, examples of disability research and an introduction to community-based rehabilitation. Form of tuition Lectures with practical exercises, tutorial groups, self study, experiential learning and group assignments Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - - M Health Sciences Pagina 18 van 43
23 Type of assessment Assessment is based on individual assignments and tutorial group work (40%) and an individual written examination (60%). Grades of both parts must at least be 6 or higher. An online reader will be available on Blackboard Target group Optional course for Master students Management, Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in Health and Life Sciences (MPA), specialisation International Public Health within the Master Health Science and specialisation International Public Health within the Master Biomedical Sciences.
