2 What's Inside Why do teens do drugs? 3 Vaccinations Making baby food 4 5 Thank you for choosing Grand Valley Health Plan! All of our doctors are accepting new patients. You can choose a Family Health Center right in your neighborhood. Some of the benefits of being a Grand Valley Health Plan patient are: You will always speak with a live person ready to assist you Early morning, lunch time, and evening appointments Same day appointments Urgent Care Center is open every day of the year A health care provider is always available by phone Prescriptions, lab testing, and x-rays can be done right at your Family Health Center As a Grand Valley patient, you do not have to worry about paperwork. Doctors will bill GVHP for the services they provide. You may be billed for non-covered or non-authorized services. You will be sent a statement. This statement tells you GVHP is being billed. Look over all of your statements. If you have any questions, please call us! IMPORTANT HINTS AS A GVHP MICHILD MEMBER: Always carry your GVHP Member ID Card. Present it at all visits. Need medical care? Call your Grand Valley Family Health Center. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day. Your Family Health Center Provider must arrange all of your health care. If you have an emergency condition, go to the nearest emergency room (ER). Or call 911. Let your Grand Valley Family Health Center know that you went to the ER. Do this within 24 to 72 hours, so we can arrange your follow-up care. If you need specialty care, your Grand Valley Provider will refer you. You will be sent to a GVHP participating specialist. This specialist will use a GVHP participating hospital. GVHP will only pay for care and services if the three following conditions are met: 1. When authorized by a provider at your Grand Valley Family Health Center, regardless of the service being in- or out-of-network. Exception is for emergency care. 2. Are provided by participating physicians and health care facilities. 3. Care and services are a covered benefit. 3 G V H P M I C H I L D Why do teens abuse drugs? Many factors can lead to teen drug abuse. Teens often do not understand consequences. That can lead to taking dangerous risks, such as abusing legal or illegal drugs. Common risk factors for teen drug abuse include: A family history of drug abuse A mental or behavioral health condition, such as depression or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Early aggressive or implusive behavior A history of upsetting events, such as a car accident or being a victim of abuse. Low self-esteem or poor social skills Feelings of social rejection Lack of encouragement by parents and caregivers Trouble with schoolwork Friends who abuse drugs Belief that drug use is okay It can be hard to talk to your teen about drug abuse. Choose a comfortable time to bring this up. Also choose a setting with a low chance to be interrupted. If you're nervous to talk about it, share your feelings with your teen. You might also consider inviting another trusted adult in your teen's life. In addition to talking to your teen, consider other ways to prevent drug use. Know your teen's activities and friends. Encourage him or her to get involved in healthy activities. Establish rules and consequences. Make it clear that you won't tolerate drug abuse. Provide support and offer praise when your teen succeeds. Above all else, set a good example and do not abuse drugs yourself. If you suspect your child is using drugs, call their GVHP Family Health Center Provider for guidance. Source: Mayo Clinic gvhp.com 3
4 Health Advice Why Vaccinate My Children? Raising a child comes with many decisions. Some are easy, like what color to paint the nursery. Especially when it comes to safety, such as baby-proofing your home to avoid potential risks for baby. Still, other decisions are more difficult. What about the risks you can't see? Ones that cause serious illness, disability, or even death in young children? Immunizations give you the power to protect your baby from 14 serious childhood diseases. Below are just a few reasons to vaccinate your child. If you have any questions about vaccinations, don't hestitate to call your GVHP Family Health Center Provider. 1 Serious diseases are still out there. Reducing or eliminating the diseases that vaccines prevent is one of the top achievements in history. But, because of this success, most young parents have never seen the devastating effects that diseases like polio or measles can have on a family or community. It's easy to think of these as diseases that only existed in the past. But the truth is they still exist. 2 Children need protection early. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sets the U.S. childhood immunization schedule. It is set based on recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The ACIP is a group of medical and public health experts. This schedule also is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). The schedule is designed to protect infants and children early in life, when they are most vulnerable. 3 Vaccines are the safe, proven choice. The United States has the safest vaccine supply. Before a vaccine is given to children, it is tested extensively. As new science becomes available, vaccine recommendations are updated. When a child receives a vaccination, there may be some discomfort or tenderness at the injection site. This is minor compared to the serious complications that can result from the disease it is preventing. Serious side effects from vaccines are very rare. Nearly all children can be safely vaccinated. However, there are some exceptions. Children with allergies to something in a vaccine should not receive one. Children with weakened immune systems may not be able to safely receive some vaccines. 4 Grand Valley Health Plan Source: Center for Disease Control
5 Baby Food: To Make or Not to Make? G V H P M I C H I L D That is the question! When you begin feeding your baby solid foods, it's time to think about what foods you will be feeding him/her. There are many healthy premade options available in the grocery stores. But making baby food is a popular option for parents who want to know exactly what goes into their baby. Below are advantages and disadvantages to both options: Advantages of Making Baby Food Yourself: Parents who prefer homemade baby food have many reasons for their choice. They know exactly what ingredients are in the food. It's usually cheaper than buying pre-made foods. They are able to choose their own fruits, vegetables and other ingredients. By doing this, they do not need to rely on the flavors sold in stores. It also gets the baby used to eating the same food as the rest of the family, just in puree form. Disadvantages of Homemade Baby Food: It takes time to make lots of little servings of baby food. It's much faster to pick up pre-packaged servings. It is also more convenient, as baby food from the store comes measured and ready to serve. Homemade baby food may spoil more quickly. It also takes up room in your refrigerator or freezer. If making your own baby food seems like too much work for you, don't feel that you are not taking the best care of your baby. Foods that are sold in stores are not harmful to your baby. It s only a very short time that they will use pureed baby food. Simply mashing up a banana or an avocado is still making your own baby food. It's up to each individual family to decide what option is the best fit for their family. Source: WebMD gvhp.com 5 Source:
6 gvhp.com 6 Source: SPRING & SUMMER HOLIDAY HOURS: Grand Valley Family Health Centers, Pharmacies, and Corporate Office will be closed on: FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 2015 MONDAY, MAY 25, 2015 FRIDAY, JULY 3, 2015 MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2015 Help us stop medical fraud, waste & abuse! Health care fraud, waste and abuse makes health care cost more. What is fraud, waste and abuse? Fraud is deception of facts. This could result in payment for services that should not occur. As a result, unnecessary costs occur. Below are some examples: A member shares their ID card with a non-member. A member does not provide correct information. A member and/or health care provider overstates an illness. A member fakes a prescription. Or gets medication to resell it. A health care provider bills for services not provided. A health care provider charges twice for the same service. What Can You Do? Do not share your ID card Always provide accurate information Report fraud, waste and abuse. If you suspect fraud, waste or abuse, report it! Call Customer Service at (616) or (800) Or call our Fraud, Waste and Abuse Hotline at (866) The hotline is always available. You do not have to leave your name. You can also write to us at: Grand Valley Health Plan 829 Forest Hills Avenue Grand Rapids, MI
