2 Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professional Quality Conference September Baltimore, MD Professional Nurse Educators Group (PNEG) 41 st Annual Conference October 3 5, 2014 Preconference: October 2 Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN Call for abstracts (Due March 10 th ): Frequently Asked Questions What is the difference between an Approver and Provider of CNE? We continue to see issues on applications and within the forms and documents submitted that contain Approval Language. An Approver of CNE is an organization that is accredited directly by ANC that is credentialed to assess and monitor other organizations; compliance with ANCC accreditation criteria as well as approve activities by other organizations in compliance with ANCC accreditation criteria. CNA is the Accredited Approver; organizations that are approved to provide CNE through CNA are Approved Providers. Approval as a provider on Continuing Nursing Education is recognition of a provider unit s capacity to award contact hours for continuing education activities. These activities must be assessed, planned, implemented, and evaluated by the approved provider unit. Under no circumstance may the approved provider act as an approval unit or approve activities. The approved provider unit may offer an unlimited number of educational activities during the three year period of approval. Your organization, upon achieving approval as a provider unit, is authorized to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate continuing education activities according to the criteria and rules and award contact hours for those activities. Provider units never have the authority to approve their own or anyone else s activities. The words approved, application, or applicant should never be used in connection with any activity your provider unit plans and presents. Can contact hours be offered for BLS? Contact hours may not be awarded for the BLS course. There has been some confusion over this topic. Contact hours may be offered for the advanced courses including ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc. Your organization may choose to not award contact hours for any or all of these courses.

3 Common Errors on Provider Unit Applications Organizations seeking approval to become an Approved Provider often have difficulty writing the selfstudy. We have included Tips for Providers to address areas we have identified. Tips for Providers Activity planning documentation forms An ANCC document CNA provides approved organizations with forms and templates that may be used to assist with compliance in activity planning and documentation. CNA does not require organizations to use the CNA forms and templates. However, organizations should use methods of documentation that meet both organizational needs as well as ANCC and CNA documentation requirements. The forms and templates provided by CNA are tools to meet documentation requirements and should not constrain or hinder organizations in planning high-quality educational activities. All forms provided may be modified to meet organizational needs, or may be used as a guideline to evaluate an organization s own documentation forms. Activity planning documentation forms should not be completed [FA1] after planning has occurred. Documentation for an activity planning is a dynamic process, and occurs throughout the stages of idea generation, pre-planning, planning, delivery and evaluation. ANCC staff, appraisers and commissioners evaluate an organization s compliance with accreditation criteria based on submitted evidence in activity files. Submitted evidence in activity files that includes forms that are retrospectively dated such as conflict of interest forms dated after an activity has been presented fail to demonstrate compliance. Reviewing the ANCC Content Integrity Standards for Industry Support in CNE Activities (ANCC Content Integrity Standards) An ANCC document Recent questions from accredited organizations to the ANCC Accreditation Program staff have prompted a review of the ANCC Content Integrity Standards in two areas: organizations eligible for accreditation (providers and approvers) and to award ANCC contact hours as individual activity applicants; and individuals eligible to participate in planning educational activities. Organizations are eligible to apply for approval as a provider to an accredited approver per the following definitions: Parent Organization An organization that owns one or more subsidiary organizations. A parent organization that is a Commercial Interest Organization is not eligible for accreditation. Subsidiary Organization An organization that is owned by a parent company. A subsidiary of a Commercial Interest Organization is not eligible for accreditation. Sister Organizations Two organizations that share a common parent owner are sister organizations. An organization may be eligible for accreditation if it establishes and maintains an adequate corporate firewall to shield it from the influence of a sister organization that is a Commercial Interest Organization.

4 Approved providers should also review the definition of a commercial interest organization that is outlined in the ANCC Content Integrity Standards. Individuals are eligible to participate in planning educational activities as per the following definitions: Employees of commercial interest organizations are not permitted to serve as planners, speakers, presenters, authors and/or content reviewers if the content of the educational activity is related to the products or services of the commercial interest organization. Employees of commercial interest organizations are permitted to serve as planners, speakers, presenters, authors and/or content reviewers if the content of the educational activity is NOT related to the products of the commercial interest organization. Individuals who have non-employee relationships with commercial interest organizations are permitted to serve as planners, speakers, presenters, authors and/or content reviewers as long as the Provider has implemented a mechanism to identify, resolve and disclose the relationship as outlined in these standards. Questions regarding eligibility may be forwarded to the ANCC Accreditation Program staff. Revenue received from exhibit space or advertising Revenue received from exhibit space or advertising that does not support continuing nursing educational activities awarding ANCC contact hours is not reported as commercial support or sponsorship to ANCC. Revenue that does support continuing nursing educational activities awarding ANCC contact hours that is provided by a commercial interest organization is reported as commercial support. Revenue that does support continuing nursing educational activities awarding ANCC contact hours that is provided by a non-commercial interest organization is reported as sponsorship.
