Ambitions Test, verify and demonstrate technology Generate knowledge for the owners Knowledge sharing Encourage the development of a market for CCS 11/01/2015 Technology Centre Mongstad 5
TEST CAMPAIGNS AT THE TWO PLANTS Amine plant Demonstrated two solvents developed by Aker Conducted a MEA-campaign baseline established Stable operations of app hours on CHP flue gas in amine plant CAP plant Demonstrated the Alstom CAP technology Stable operations of app hours (RFCC and CHP flue gas) CO 2 Capture rate: app. 90% in both plants 11/01/2015 Technology Centre Mongstad 6
SLIDE TITLE MEA TESTS SET NEW BENCHMARK World s first open-source, large-scale CO2 capture tests of amine solvent MonoEthanolAmine (MEA) on flue gas from a gas-fired power plant MEA campaign prove industrial-scale flue gas CO 2 capture more efficient and lower cost than ever before Steam consumption: 4.1 MJ/kg CO2 at 30 wt% MEA 3.7 MJ/kg CO2 at 30 wt% MEA and antifoam 3.4 MJ/kg CO2 at 40 wt MEA Very low emissions (MEA emissions in ppb) CO 2 capture rate of 85% Results will stand as the baseline for future vendor testing at TCM Results from the campaign is available for the CCS community
SHELL CANSOLV TEST CAMPAIGN Test performed using exhaust gas from the gas fired Combined Heat and Power Plant at Mongstad. Focus on process verification and emissions. Started in November 2014 and will last for approximately five months hours of testing so far. Campaign aimed for Shell Cansolvs involvement in the Peterhead project in the UK. Shell Cansolv also supplier of technology to Boundary Dam. 11/01/2015 Technology Centre Mongstad 8
REDUCTION OF TECHNICAL RISK Two years of extensive operational experience Transferable operational experience from TCM: - Energy optimization - Shut down/start-up procedures - Scale-up - Verification of simulation models - Solvent degradation - waste handling 11/01/2015 Technology Centre Mongstad 9
REDUCTION OF ENVIROMENTAL RISK Experience with emissions in an industrial scale Systematic approach to understand and manage emissions Instrumentation and monitoring Atmospheric chemistry, spread and degradation of amines Monitoring the vicinities 11/01/2015 Technology Centre Mongstad 10
REDUCTION OF FINANCIAL RISK Discoveries at TCM reduce financial cost and risk in future full-scale projects Important issues to reduce financial risk Material selection Constructed and verified the use of concrete absorbers with polymer (PP) lining Design optimization simulation models verified in an industrial scale can contribute to design optimization 11/01/2015 Technology Centre Mongstad 11
