STAY WELL WITH AHL A Guide to our National Hostel Network
Welcome to Aboriginal Hostels Limited. STAY WELL WITH AHL Our national network of more than 50 accommodation facilities offers Indigenous Australians access to a broad range of employment, health and other services. Stretching across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory, our hostel network provides short stay, medical, renal and education accommodation services to a wide range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents. I hope you find this a useful guide to our facilities and services. My staff and I are more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Joy Savage CEO Aboriginal Hostels Limited
Our vision Our Vision is to improve the quality of life and economic opportunity for Indigenous Australians. Our purpose Our Purpose is to provide or facilitate safe, culturally appropriate and affordable accommodation for Indigenous Australians who need to be away from home to access services, in particular education and economic opportunity. Our history Since 1973, Aboriginal Hostels Limited (AHL) has been contributing to Indigenous Australians quality of life through the delivery of accommodation and support services across its national network of accommodation facilities. AHL s first hostel, Yumba Hostel, was officially opened on 12 January With over forty years of service, the company has maintained its commitment to delivering short term accommodation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who need to be away from their communities to access services and economic opportunity.
Building on our successes Today, AHL operates more than 50 hostels across Australia, providing over 2,000 beds to Indigenous Australians each night of the year in urban, regional and remote areas. AHL will continue to provide Indigenous Australians with safe, comfortable, affordable and culturally sensitive accommodation that enables them to access essential services such as education, health, legal advice, training and employment that might not otherwise be available to them in their home communities.
A snapshot of our organisation AHL is a not-for-profit company wholly owned by the Australian Government, with an independent non-executive Board of Directors. AHL s key vision is to improve Indigenous Australians quality of life through the delivery of accommodation and support services that give clients access to education, employment, health and other services. Each year AHL provides more than 460,000 beds to accommodate people living away from home. We provide three meals a day to most of our customers and ensure that they make contact with, or are engaged with the services they need. Our hostels offer safe, secure accommodation where positive behaviour in a social and learning environment is encouraged. Residents are charged a tariff rate that is affordable for recipients of Australian Government income support. The Australian Government provides funds to cover the gap between tariff income and the cost of providing the hostel services. AHL is one of the largest providers of employment and training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with more than 70% of our 500-strong workforce identifying as Indigenous.
Valuing our stakeholders & partners AHL s extensive experience in providing temporary accommodation for Indigenous Australians has led to its recognition as a much sought-after partner in the provision of accommodation facilities. While interest in traditional hostel facilities remains strong, we are increasingly working with partners and potential partners to develop different models of accommodation suited to the needs of particular client groups. We now offer block bookings of beds on a prepaid basis to organisations to secure guaranteed accommodation availability. Prepaid bookings avoid peak availability issues and offer certainty for referring agencies and their clients. With more than one third of AHL s resident base typically coming through referrals from support agencies, AHL is keen to work with service providers and their funding bodies to ensure that referral pathways for the clients and residents we share are as streamlined and constructive as possible.
AHL s accommodation services Short-term accommodation AHL provides short-term accommodation in towns and cities for individuals and families looking for employment, housing, or conducting general business and other commitments away from their homes and communities. Many residents in these hostels stay with us until they are able to access long-term accommodation. Accommodation while accessing health services AHL provides hostels that cater specifically for Indigenous Australians who require access to renal dialysis treatment at local renal medical centres and hospitals. AHL also provides temporary accommodation and support for individuals and families who must leave their communities to access health services. Accommodation while accessing secondary or tertiary education and training AHL provides secondary and tertiary students with accommodation relatively close to educational facilities. AHL encourages students to complete their high school education and go on to tertiary studies. Hostel staff provide transitional support to students who wish to access additional training and potential employment pathways.
