4 ECONOMIC PROGRESS Wyandotte County has experienced tremendous growth and transformation in recent years Year-To-Date: $305.8 million in announced new investments More than 500 jobs were either created or retained More than 1 million sq. ft. leased or under construction PQ Corp. announced a $128 million manufacturing expansion and 50 new jobs. Did you know? Figures recently released from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show Wyandotte County s 5.5% growth in jobs between March 2013 and March 2014 leads the Kansas City metro and ranks 5th in the nation. Wyandotte County s growth rate was over three times the national growth rate for this period. The Labor Bureau ranked the 340 largest counties in the country. General Motors announced a $600 million investment in a new paint and body shop in their Fairfax assembly plant. Wyandotte County s manufacturing industry makes up 22% of all Gross Regional Product, which is higher than the Kansas City Metro (9%), the state of Kansas and the United States. Xpedx, the distribution subsidiary of International Paper, relocated its operations center to an $11.9 million, 280,000 square foot facility in Edwardsville. Xpedx retained its 180 employees and plans to hire additional employees. The Village West development is a $1 billion public-private partnership creating more than 10,000 new jobs. Cerner Corporation, an international medical software company, is nearing completion of a 660,000 square foot campus in western Wyandotte County. The two towers will serve and maintain technology networks for 30 percent of the nation s health care systems. KC StartUp Village is a key location for entrepreneurs to locate and take advantage of Google Fiber. More than 25 start-ups call this area home.
5 LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY KCK Area Chamber members have an opportunity to be the voice of the business community on legislative issues by interacting with local, state and national leaders through the Congressional Forum. We are one of the few chambers in the United States that has such a program and it is currently the longest running Congressional Forum in the country. Legislative Committee With your membership, you can play a vital role in assisting with local, state and federal legislative affairs for the community. Your membership gives you access to be a part of candidate forums and special issues. Legislative Priorities Economic Development Supports the preservation of STARBonds as an economic development tool for the state of Kansas. Supports the continuation of PEAK (Promoting Employment Across Kansas) as an economic development tool. Continues to support the University of Kansas Medical Center s request for annual funding to support the current NCI designation and future application for comprehensive Cancer Center designation. And, supports KU Hospital staying as the state owned hospital and a public authority. Supports efforts that will continue further development of tourism in our community and the state. Supports a property tax exemption for land owned by a municipality that is part of a public levee that is leased to a private party. Healthcare Supports the review of current KanCare policy and urges the state government to carefully consider the effects of any changes in regulations before their implementation. Regulation Urges all units of government to carefully weigh the cost-benefit consequences of existing and proposed new regulations before their implementation. The KCK Area Chamber supports local control over local elections. Opposed changing Open Records to include economic development organizations or all organizations who receive any kind of public funds. Taxes Supports renewing a partnership and cooperative spirit with city, county, school and business leaders to address the issue of increasing property taxes caused by the shifting of costs from state government to local governments and schools. Supports the elimination of the tax credit liability as an economic development tool that is no longer a meaningful help to business attraction or retention. Transportation Supports the T-WORKS program as provided for in the 2010 Kansas Comprehensive Transportation Program. Urges policymakers to move forward with Medicaid expansion for economic development purposes in the areas of healthcare and maintaining hospitals.
6 GET INVOLVED As a KCK Area Chamber of Commerce member, you are eligible to volunteer on Chamber committees and task forces. Each opportunity allows you to interact with other Chamber members while promoting and growing your business. Ambassador Club Ambassadors are the eyes and ears of the Chamber. Get involved with events, new member recruitment, retention, groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings. This is a great way to network in many different arenas and get to know the community. Business Programs and Services Develop and implement the Small Business Awards celebration, the annual Business to Business Expo and other educational opportunities. These events allow members to network and promote their businesses. K-7 Corridor Work to find the best and highest use of development for the K-7 corridor including other areas of mutual benefit between Wyandotte and Leavenworth Counties. Legislative Committee Assist with local, state and federal legislative affairs for the community and assist with candidate forums and special issues. Membership Committee Focus on attracting new Chamber members through membership drives, incentives, challenges, programs and new member orientations. Workforce Committee Help educate community stakeholders on the workforce industry in our own backyard, seek out educational pathways for our local students and assist with legislative, regulatory and gap needs. Mission: Enhance and create opportunities in Wyandotte County which build a quality community to live, work and conduct business. The Chamber cultivates connections among its members by providing business leadership and advocacy. Members have access to opportunities including networking and business resources.
