AMessageFromtheChair Welcome to Progress Report 1 of Sasquan, the 73rd World Science Fiction Convention. (Wow, doesn t that sound awesome?) We want to thank you all for the great support you have given us. The last Worldcon in the Pacific Northwest was in 1961 it was called Seacon. The GOH was Robert A. Heinlein and the Toastmaster was Harlan Ellison. It had an attendance of 300. How the times have changed. It is a little over 6 months since we won the bid at LSC3 in San Antonio where we announced our Guests of Honor. Our wonderful Guests are Brad Foster, David Gerrold, Vonda N. McIntyre, Tom Smith, and Leslie Turek. Individually they have made great contributions to the world of Science Fiction and Fantasy and deserve to be honored. As a group they represent the best of our genre. Since winning the bid we have been busy signing contracts, hiring people and planning a really great convention. Some of the best, most experienced people are working to make this a very memorable Worldcon. Please check out our staff list. We recently had a staff meeting in Spokane and I was pleased by the excitement generated during this meeting for the site. The Convention Center, the Davenport Hotel (the party hotel), the Spokane River, the Riverside Park, the food and the friendly, helpful people were what we were all talking about. Plans are in the works to make Sasquan a truly unique convention. In 2015 the Science Fiction world is coming to Spokane, Washington, so please go out there and spread the word. 5 Events Jill Eastlake DivisionUpdates The best in Worldcon entertainment will be yours to see, explore, and participate in at Sasquan. We will be hosting the Hugo Awards Ceremony on the final night of the convention, Saturday night, in the INB Performing Arts Center. This is the night to celebrate the best the Science Fiction and Fantasy community has in literature, media, and fandom. For Friday night, also in the INB, we invite you to participate in the Worldcon Masquerade, a staged competition of costumers from around the world styling their finest in clothing, character, and sometimes as a phone booth! We will open the convention on Wednesday afternoon and close it on Sunday afternoon featuring live shows with our Guests of Honor and more. During the convention join us to dance, sing, and amuse the days and nights away! There will also be anime, cartoons, general SF videos, an audio listening room and our own Filk Festival with new videos created just for us. And, very unusually, we hope to bring you First Night on Wednesday in the Park! This will, of course depend upon the weather. But, whether it s outdoors or inside, there will be plenty to get your convention started on a fun and enlightening note. So, please join us and send us your ideas for a great selection of Events at Sasquan. Write to or Program Laurie Mann We're in the early days of planning Program for Sasquan. We have a great set of guests so we can promise that we'll keep them quite busy during the con. In addition to panels and talks, we'll have autographing, writer's workshops, children's activities, art items, costuming items, Stroll with the Stars, kaffeeklatsches and more. For the first time at a Worldcon, we're throwing a Super Science Saturday. We'll be running great science and tech programming throughout the convention, but Saturday afternoon is our Special Time. We'll be doing some of our very best items then. We've already secured a commitment from LaserMotive ( to demonstrate their exciting game changing power beaming technology. We hope to do more demos, showcase exciting presentations (we've got a beautiful venue for talks), special panels, and more. Kaffeeklatches with your favorite scientists? Science and technology oriented filk? Whatever you want. Another first since Spokane has plenty of pubs close to the convention center, we'll have at least two formal pub crawls during two evenings of the con. Sasquan will also have private writing critique circles that will run throughout the convention. Entrants will be expected to comment on the other manuscripts in their section as well as being critiqued by industry professionals (writers, editors and agents) themselves. The deadline for submitting is July 1, No manuscripts will be accepted before February 1. Stayed tuned for details on how to enter. We're always looking for Program suggestions. If you have any, drop by our Idea Form at form/ and send us a suggestion. We'll be sending out invitations to be on Program gradually between this fall and next spring. 6 Bobbie DuFault, Chair in Memoriam( ) Bobbie DuFault, the guiding light behind Spokane s bid for the 2015 Worldcon and our Chair In Memoriam, was into Science Fiction and Fantasy. She was a major mover in bringing the World Science Fiction Convention back to America s Northwest for the first time in 51 years. A Co Chair of the bid, she had worked for this goal for 10 years. She was on the Board of Directors for several Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions, and on the staff of many more. Some of those included: Rustycon, Norwescon, Anglicon, CourageousCon,Westercon 48 and 52, CascadiaCon, and Rainfurrest). Bobbie worked on conventions to bring education and give inspiration to writers, artists, and costumers, giving them the chance to improve their crafts by bringing in professionals to these conventions. She was on the Board of Directors for Reading for the Future ( a group working with teachers to encourage literacy through Speculative Fiction. Bobbie was a well read, well rounded individual with a thirst for knowledge. She had the ability to sit down and talk about any topic, from ancient cultures to far away planets. She had extensive knowledge of many subjects and if she didn t know the topic, she would let you teach her. She was a professional artist, writer, and poet. She loved arts and crafts, and owned a vintage shop where she made and sold handmade jewelry. Bobbie had a big heart. Bobbie could tell when others had a problem. She would sit down with them, and make them feel as if they were the most important thing on this planet to her. That was the thing they were. Everybody Bobbie met was important, and she had a helper s soul. She became a minister and life coach and would counsel street kids and adults to help them kick drug and alcohol problems. She moved her home to Neah Bay to help families on the Macaw Reservation Even though Bobbie was working in the tech field and loved science and technology of the future, she also looked back to the past. She and her husband Jerry owned a small farm on the outskirts of Gold Bar, WA where they raised pigs and fowl. They also had a garden, and preserve the food so they always have plenty for their family to eat. Family was the most important thing to Bobbie and she considered most of the people she helped family. 6 Sasquan

OurGuests ofhonor:someoftheir Favorite ConventionExperiences My Favorite Convention Experiences by Brad W. Foster My favorite convention experience? Maybe the first time my name was on the list of "main" guests. Until that point, I had been in the subsection of regional panelists and such. I even thought I would adopt the pseudonym of "And Others", just to see my name show up more often. Of course, to this day, my first response when someone does invite me as a "name" guest is to ask if they are really sure about that. It is a thrill every time. The best thing that ever came from a convention was meeting Cindy. Nothing came of that first meeting due to my complete lack of interpersonal skills. But with the help of some mutual friends who kept pushing us together, I realized this was the person I was to spend the rest of my life with. And I was right! The most embarrassing experience was after we were married, and I had to introduce her to people that I had known for years at conventions. This brought up the fact that I m terrible at remembering names. I mean, horrible. I can talk with people at conventions for years without ever using their names. But you can t do that when you have to introduce two people to each other. I resorted to some of the most hideously transparent ploys to avoid having to do it I would literally drop a pen or knock something off a table, and say "Oops! Hey, why don t you just introduce yourselves to each other?" Cindy, of course, knew what I was doing. If any of my friends knew, they were kind enough not to embarrass me by pointing it out. (By the way, I still cannot remember most folk s names. But Cindy does!) Finally, the worst experience was missing the Hugo ceremonies one year (pre Cindy) when some friends took me out to eat before the ceremony to celebrate my nomination. As a bachelor, I lived on Spam and frozen dinners 99% of the time. They took me to a restaurant with actual good food, and my body rebelled against this unknown intruder. I passed out in agony in my hotel room for hours, missing the entire thing. But at least I had fun later, watching the faces of people when they said, "Wow, is that the Hugo?", and then I d hand it to them to hold. I d tell them to let their hand drape nonchalantly over the name on the plaque, and have their friends take a photo of them with "their" award. If you ve wondered why there seem to be more Hugo award winners out there than the lists show, now you have the answer. ArtCredits Brad W. 8 My All Time Favorite Convention Memory by David Gerrold In February of 1973, I was invited to my first Star Trek Convention at the Commodore Hotel, located over Grand Central Station in New York City. It was one of the biggest fan conventions, and it was one of the best parties I'd ever been to. I met some great people there, many of whom I've stayed in touch with ever since. The Con Committee wanted to have a panel on writing science fiction and asked me to be on it. They didn't have multiple program tracks then, only one track of programming, everything held in the hotel's huge ballroom. There must have been 3,000 people there, maybe more. It was the largest crowd I'd ever seen at a convention. It was one of the first times I'd ever been invited to be on a panel, so I arrived early. At one end of the room was a giant proscenium stage. I went up and sat down at the table and waited. A few minutes later, Isaac Asimov came in and sat down left of me. Isaac and I already knew each other, we'd met a few years earlier and had stayed in touch, exchanging the occasional note. I said "Hello, Isaac," and he boomed, "Hello, David." A minute after that, Hal Clement came up on stage and sat down on my right. I knew Hal too, from previous Worldcons, though not as well as Isaac, but enough to be glad to see him. I said, "Hi, Hal," and he said, "Hi, David." And in that short moment before the panel actually started, I realized that I was sitting between two science fiction giants, two of the men I admired most in the field for their ability to imagine what's on the other side of the sky, and I still looked like I was fourteen. And that's when the little voice in my head said, "David, what the hell are you doing here, sitting between Isaac Asimov and Hal Clement?" And then the other little voice in my head there's a whole committee in here, sometimes said, "Keep your mouth shut or the audience will be asking the same question." But this was a Star Trek convention and the audience was almost all Star Trek fans and I was the only Star Trek writer in attendance, so the first question came to me. A young fan asked, "How important is scientific accuracy in writing Star Trek?" 8 Sasquan

I said, "I think scientific accuracy to be one of the most important parts of science fiction, so if I don't know something, I pick up the phone and call Isaac Asimov, and if he doesn't know he picks up the phone and calls Hal Clement, so let me just hand the microphone to Hal right now." And I did just that. I don't remember much else from that panel. Mostly I remember feeling a little awestruck that I got to sit on a panel between Isaac and Hal and pretend for a while that I had earned the right to be there. It was one of those defining moments that made me realize just how high I would have to aim in my own work. Brighton Worldcon 1979 by Vonda N. McIntyre Dreamsnake was up for the Hugo for Best Novel at the Brighton Worldcon in I went to the convention my first non USA con though I had no expectation of winning. Smart money was on Anne McCaffrey s The White Dragon. Up for Best Dramatic Production was the first Superman movie, starring Christopher Reeve. Whether Reeve attended in a speculative role or whether the studio and the committee had some sub rosa conversations about sending someone from Superman to the convention because Reasons, I have no idea. I do know that he was, improbably, even more beautiful in real life than on screen. Superman was up against the original BBC radio production of Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy, which was the audience favorite. However, most Worldcons include more American members than members of other nationalities, and only bootleg tapes of Hitchhiker had made it to North America. Consequently, Superman won. In accepting the Hugo, Christopher Reeve noticed a certain surliness in the audience. He mentioned that the competition hadn t made it to the US, and said he would like to hear it. Within ten seconds he had the audience in the palm of his hand. It was amazing to watch. Dreamsnake also won, to my astonishment. Anne McCaffrey was the first person to congratulate me and give me a big hug when I stepped off the stage, dazed with surprise. She was generous of heart, and I ve always appreciated her gesture Sasquan

So the convention ended and we all went our separate ways. Exhausted and lugging a backpack full of books, I got to American customs. I tried to explain the Hugo, which I was carrying in a shopping bag and which looks like a small bazooka shell. That s all right, said the customs agent. Awards aren t dutiable. I ve read your work. Welcome home. Made my day. Soon thereafter, I received a package from the Worldcon committee. It contained a tape of Hitchhiker. And a note, which I paraphrase (it s been a long time), but don t exaggerate: Christopher Reeve expressed interest in hearing Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy. Here s a tape of it. Would you please pass it along to Mr. Reeve next time you see him? I live in Seattle, more than a thousand miles from Los Angeles (where movie stars hang out). I don t typically hang out with movie stars. Or know every other American, for that matter. I found Reeve s agent, and explained about and the tape. The agent promised to send it along. ROFL hadn t been invented yet, but I suspect ROFL was the reaction of both the agent and me. Possibly also of Christopher Reeve, who sent me the most charming thank you note. My Favorite Convention Moments by Tom Smith I've been attending conventions regularly since 1984, and I could tell you tales of excellent concerts, magnificent banter, and making friends... but two stories stand out. The first was of my very first SF con WindyCon I was going with Chicagoan Lee Darrow (who, at the time, lived in Ann Arbor) to run tech for his magic show at the con. He'd warned me about Chicago traffic, and we hit the Skyway at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. It was empty. Maybe twelve cars, total, both ways. I mean, it looked like a zombie apocalypse. Lee, doing his best guppy out of water impression, was boggled. We turned on the radio the Pope was at Wrigley Field, along with about a million of his close personal friends. By the time that was done, we were in Arlington Heights. (The traffic was much closer to Chicago normal on the way home.) The other is how I met Anne, the love of my life. 12 She says it was ConClave 1987 I'm remembering it as ConFusion Doesn't matter same hotel. Excellent Saturday night filk, and I'm singing the Mitchell Trio's song "The I Was Not A Nazi Polka". There's a schtick at the end when the performer bellows "WAIT! You zhere. You are not singing. You do not like... to sing...?" And I got to that point, and my gaze fell on the absolute most beautiful woman I have ever seen, before or since. And I gave her the proper Look to go with those lines, and she picked up her cue beautifully and looked around scared and then sung along, and we all had a great laugh. She turned out to be a friend of a friend, and I ended up inviting her into what turned out to be The Best Role Playing Campaign Ever, and we read the same novels and comics and watched the same TV shows and movies and loved RPGs and board games and she properly introduced me to Thai food and we've done Disney World together multiple times, and we have now been together romantically for over twenty three years with no end in sight. She herself says that we have a love like Gomez and Morticia, and what can I do but agree? Let's Put On A Show! First Night, Noreascon 4, 2004 by Leslie Turek This story starts nearly a year before the convention. First Priscilla had the idea, then Deb supported it, and John started the planning. But they needed someone to run it. Would I get sucked in? I had pretty much retired from convention running and wasn t sure I had the energy to pull this off. But it was a neat idea, and Deb was my friend, and it was a Noreascon, so it was hard to say no. I was in. Preparations started. Jim and Jeff sent out invitations, Marah recruited clubs, Alice designed the logo, Gay Ellen liaisoned with artists, clubs came up with booth ideas, and Jim and Chip helped with the layout. I wrote lots of s and worried. Priscilla planned some fun program items, Spencer scheduled performers for the Mended Drum, Erica designed a program handout, Geri advised on the signs, David rehearsed a brass fanfare, we ordered silly prizes from Oriental Trading Company. I made lots of to do lists and worried Sasquan

The day arrived. Jim held down headquarters. I ran around to make sure everyone knew where they belonged and had what they needed. And worried. A lot. There weren t enough sign holders. Someone stole our bulletin board. Bobbi and Jim worked with the facilities and decorator and kept me from going mad. Lots of people helped blow up balloons, decorate booths with crepe paper, and light up glo rings. Paul and Lynx gave us light and sound. Jim and Chip worked last minute miracles to get us a stage. Worrying started to transition into that wonderful feeling that this thing might come off after all. The evening started with a fanfare. Dan greeted people. Bill and Daniel led games. Persis helped children make costumes. Guy hosted a reception. Bob and Grant created a fanzine. Larry and Sue hosted the Ankh Moorpark Ball. Vivian gave prizes to costumes. Anne s booth tossed rings over Hugos. Bobbie s booth tossed fish. Ruth handed out prizes. Esther put Terry on trial. People ate popcorn and ice cream. Bill did magic. Megan made balloon animals. Many lovely ladies belly danced. Dave, Kevin, and Michael dealt blackjack. Kyle drew caricatures. Eric juggled. The Phoenix Swords clashed. Roland played the violin. Thomas demonstrated a theremin. Authors campaigned to be First Citizen of Fanatopia. I breathed a deep sigh of relief. Ten o clock, and things were winding down. I felt great! Dozens of people had worked together to make something very cool happen. So much more than I could have imagined or done myself. And this is exactly what I love best about conventions. 15 FanhistoryofthePacific Northwest A Brief History of SWOC, the Sponsoring Organization of Sasquan SWOC (formerly the Seattle Westercon Organizing Committee) organizes conventions in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest and has done so since its founding in 1990, for Westercon 46. SWOC is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation in accordance with its bylaws. SWOC was the sponsor of Westercon 50 in 1997, Westercon 56 in 2003 and the 65th Westercon in Seattle on July 5 8, SWOC also sponsored the 2005 NASFiC, CascadiaCon. It is now hosting Sasquan, the 2015 Worldcon in Spokane, WA. SWOC hosts ConComCon (also known as C Cubed), an annual regional conference for convention organizers, and is the legal corporate entity of Conflikt, Seattle's filk convention.. SWOC offers several scholarships for ConComCon memberships to area conventions, to develop skills and networking among regional conrunners. Since 2005, SWOC has also occasionally offered a scholarship for Smofcon. Nuts, Berries, and a Worldcon That Might Have Been by Tom Veal Sasquan will be the Pacific Northwest s third World Science Fiction Convention, and the first since the Paleolithic (Portland, 1950) or, at best, Early Neolithic (Seattle, 1961) Era of fandom. After the latter, known as Seacon, was concluded, the detritus cleared away and the bills paid off, Seattle fandom proceeded to a not uncommon sequel: hiding from the world. The Cry of the Nameless, Hugo winning clubzine of the Nameless Ones (the organization behind Seacon), continued publication through 1969, but by the early Seventies local fanac, though not defunct, had become virtually invisible. A new generation of Pacific Northwest fandom erupted in 1977, when Greg and Becky Bennett, SF readers transformed into fans by the 1976 Worldcon (MidAmericon in Kansas City), founded the Northwest Science Fiction Society, which in time begat the Seattle Westercon Organizing Committee, which evolved into SWOC, which is the parent of Sasquan. The 73rd World Science Fiction Convention 15 Progress Report #1

At the first NWSFS meeting, attended by a half dozen or so proto fen discovered through various connections, someone asked what goals the new group ought to set for itself. Greg responded, after a moment s thought, Let s bid for a Worldcon. The group chose a year that was (or seemed) still a long way off: 1981, voting for which would take place in To people who knew what they were doing, the project would have seemed mad. No one in NWSFS had a minute s experience working on World Science Fiction Conventions. Few had ever attended an SF con of any size or species. Moreover, there were already two rival bids, for Denver and Los Angeles. The L.A. bid, the upshot of a local fan feud, never gained any traction. Denver was more formidable and, having last hosted a Worldcon before the Fannish Paleolithic (1941), had some sentimental priority. Short of experience though the Seattle group might be, it didn t lack energy and talent. Several members besides the Bennetts, such as Richard Wright, Elizabeth Warren, Jane Hawkins, David Bray, Bob Doyle and Steve Bard, were destined to become much better known in fandom, while William Warren, just embarking on his career as a pro artist, supplied superb visuals for bid advertisements. Particularly memorable was his Great Moments in Science Fiction series, which cleverly worked the Space Needle and an occasional Bigfoot into scenes from classic SF movies. To demonstrate its seriousness and improve its credibility, the group founded a new convention. Norwescon was launched in March 1978, with Theodore Sturgeon and John Berry as Guests of Honor and Alan E. Nourse as Toastmaster. Attendance was officially recorded as 415, pretty impressive for a fledgling con in a seeming fannish desert, and grew to over 700 the following year. NWSFS also expanded rapidly, going from seven original members to 160 in little more than a year. Along the way the new fen encountered the Nameless Ones, who were a little startled by news of a possible return of the Worldcon but were more than willing to join the fun, so long as younger hands would do the work. A chartered busload of Seattle fans traveled to the next year s Worldcon, Iguanacon in Phoenix, to boost the bid with parties every night and to burnish their own credentials by working in all the roles that they could. By the end of the convention, they had attracted support from Big Name Fans elsewhere on the continent and erased all doubts about whether Seattle was a serious contender. But what made the bid truly and memorably fannish was the Great Nuts and Berries Hoax. According to an early flyer, presupporting memberships in the bid cost $1.00 or 6,000 pounds of assorted nuts and berries to keep the Bigfoots happy and nonviolent until 81. In response, Bjørn Vermo and the Aniara Science Fiction Club wrote from Norway to say that they had pooled their resources and were shipping 60,000 pounds of Norwegian hazelnuts and Russian dried blueberries in payment for ten presupports, FOB Oslo. Accompanying the letter was an authentic looking bill of lading confirming that the goods had been loaded onto a freighter bound for the 16 Sasquan

Port of Seattle. Research disclosed that the ship and its purported schedule were real and that its cargo manifest was consistent with the Norwegian club s documents. Bjørn also showed up at Iguanacon, where, in Greg Bennett s words, he was relentless, telling the story in painful detail of how difficult it was to organize the bodies they needed to move those blueberries and hazelnuts from their cache. Panic, or the pretense thereof, ensued, as NWSFS members had visions of trying to cope with 30 tons of foodstuffs, not to mention being dunned for insurance and freight. Greg s account continues, While we were sweating away in the fair city of Phoenix (both from the heat and from Bjørn s ceaseless deadpan), the California Star was steaming her way through the Panama Canal. We started making plans blueberry wine, blueberry soup, hazelnut bread. Our resident gourmet cook, Cliff Wind, took great delight in coming up with exotic recipes. So, on September 11, 1978, about a dozen members of the Northwest Science Fiction Society met the California Star at its dock. We were prepared with all the excuses: unsolicited merchandise, it wasn t our fault, we can t afford to pay the shipping charges.... But, when the crates were all unloaded, the nuts and berries were nowhere to be found. The subsequent explanation was that a horde of bigfoots had boarded the ship during its passage through the Strait of Juan de Fuca and pirated the delicacies. The bid added the Aniara Club members to its presupporting rolls. Unfortunately, not all went so swimmingly. A couple of kerfuffles turned into major problems for the bid and, in the opinion of many, led to its defeat. First, at a fannish inquisition, a questioner posed a hypothetical scenario of hotel misconduct that flustered the Seattle representative. After trying to evade with It couldn t happen, he declared, I d punch out the banquet manager. Those weren t the right answers. Second, the bid s propaganda package included a brochure from its proposed site, the Red Lion Hotel near Seattle Tacoma Airport, which declared that the facility was Capable of hosting meetings of up to 1,200 people. The Denver bidcom seized on this statement as an admission that the Red Lion was simply too small for a Worldcon. Suncon in 1977 had drawn over 3,000 fen and Iguanacon in 1978 nearly 5,000. In fact, the Red Lion, converted into a Doubletree, later hosted Norwescons in that size range, but the Seattle bidders didn t make a serious effort to confront the issue, leaving many voters with the impression that they expected Worldcons to shrink drastically as Star Trek inspired enthusiasm wore off. That wasn t a stance that had wide appeal in fandom (and also turned out not to be correct). These setbacks were, however, more visible in after the fact analysis than at the time. The race was generally regarded as neck and neck, albeit with some advantage for Denver s less neo fannish committee, as the 1979 Worldcon in Brighton, England, drew near. The convention s nickname was, purely by coincidence, Seacon, the same as Seattle s prior Worldcon. That was not, alas, an omen. The 73rd World Science Fiction Convention 17 Progress Report #1

Not many bidcom members could afford the trip across the Atlantic. To one of the affluent few a number of local fans entrusted their site selection ballots, reckoning it was safer to have them carried by hand than to rely on the mails. That was a miscalculation. The messenger forgot all about his charge until after the polls closed, depriving Seattle of 20 or 30 votes. The ballots were counted on Saturday night. The totals were Seattle Denver Los Angeles No Preference Mail In At Con Total Thanks to the mishap with the hand carried Seattle ballots and the fact that No Preference is ignored, Denver gained a three vote majority, narrowly escaping the redistribution of the L.A. votes and a second round of counting. Though it didn t gain a Worldcon for the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle bid had significant positive consequences. The energy devoted to it carried over into NWSFS and the rest of local fandom. Within a few years Norwescon was one of the two or three largest regionals, with 3,000 members and an impressive array of authors and artists. Seattle in 81 is also noteworthy as a pioneer in modern Worldcon bidding, with extravagant bid parties, topnotch ad artwork and clever themes. A group that no one in fandom had initially heard of accomplished a lot in just three years, almost as much as if it had won a Worldcon. Finally, one can trace a direct lineage from the 1981 bid to Sasquan. The nuts and berries are still bearing fruit. The Seattle in 81 Bid Committee: Greg Bennett (chairman), Steve Bard, Becky Bennett, David Bray, Pepper Bray, Bob Doyle, Karrie Dunning, Shelley Dutton, Gordon Erickson, Herby Fairbanks, Jeff Frane, Jane Hawkins, Loren MacGregor, Lauraine Miranda, Paul Novitski, Ross Pavlac, Dennis Pernaa, Bill Seil, Larry Smith, Tom Veal, William Warren, Elizabeth Warren, Cliff Wind, Richard Wright Author s note: An earlier version of this article appeared in the Cascadia Con Progress Report No. 3, April The author wishes to thank Bill Seil for preserving the bid memorabilia that made this account possible, Becky Thomson for editorial assistance with the previous article, and Greg Bennett and Bruce Miller for helpful comments and criticisms that have, I hope, made this new rendition more balanced and accurate Sasquan
