2 1143_prog_EssexCtyBooklet_08_Guts_v3 7/8/08 9:24 AM Page 1 GENERAL INFORMATION ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: There are no educational requirments for admission; however, all Full-Time Preparatory applicants will be counseled and tested prior to entry into the program in order to ensure successful completion. Courses listed in this bulletin are available to individuals 18 years of age and older who can profit from such training. Persons applying for admission will not be admitted while enrolled on a day High School program. CANCELLATION POLICY: If a course must be cancelled for any reason, tuition and registration fees will be reimbursed. In the event of insufficient enrollment, a course will be withdrawn and all fees will be credited/ refunded. No fees will be reimbursed after the first class for any reason. CERITIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS: Trade extension diplomas will specify hours of training in a trade area. Trade preparatory diplomas will be given for the successful achievement of the entry-level skill status of a trade area. DISMISSAL FOR UNSATISFACTORY CONDUCT: Misconduct of any type will not be tolerated. Adults will be terminated following a review of facts by the Director of Adult and Vocational Technical Education. Students will not be allowed to continue for a six-month period from the dismissal date. EDUCATIONAL REQIREMENTS: In several courses a series of units are provided in sequence. To enter one of these units, students must meet the prerequisite or prove to the satisfaction of the instructor that they have had equivalent training. In many courses, however, there are not such requirements. METHOD OF PAYMENT: Only money orders and checks will be accepted. If paying by check, two forms of ID, including one photo ID, will need to be provided at the time of payment. No cash will be accepted. Tuition will not be refunded for any reason after class begins unless the class is cancelled. All tuition, lab fees, and material fees must be paid in full in order to be admitted to class. SCHOOL CLOSING: Classes missed due to inclement weather shall be made up at the end of the term. Evening classes are automatically cancelled when day classes are cancelled. All closings are announced on WINS 1010, WOR 970 and WABC 770. TUITION: There is no tuition for Essex County Residents taking Trade Preparatory courses However, a $ material replacement fee is charged for all Vocational-Technical courses. Cost of books, if necessary, will be additional if not noted otherwise. SENIOR CITIZEN POLICY: Tuition cost shall be reduced Ten Dollars ($10.00) for senior citizens that reside in Essex County. APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS: The apprenticeship training in New Jersey, which operates under the guidelines of the Vocational Division of the State Department of Education, is approved by Essex County Vocational Schools. Our training program is also approved by the Bureau of Veterans Training. It has been recognized for its effectiveness in preparing qualified apprentices in a wide variety of trades in the construction and industrial fields. The program consists of a minimum of 144 hours per year of instructional training at our vocational schools. The length of apprenticeship is determined by the standards of the trade selected. In most trades the length of apprenticeship is four years, after which the apprentice may expect journeyman status. Participants must be employed in the specific field of the trade to qualify for sponsorship. Upon registration, each student is evaluated to establish their educational deficiencies. After testing/evaluation an individual education plan is developed, and each student is placed into class with students of comparable skills. The educational plan is created to develop competency in communication and/or mathematical skills. The attainment of GED certificate is the program goal. Adult Basic Education (ABE, PRE-GED) This course prepares students for the High School Equivalency Program (GED). Emphasis is placed on providing skills in reading, spelling, basic mathematics and language arts. Mon. & Wed. 6:00-9:00 p.m. NO COST General Education Development (GED Preparation) This course is designed to prepare students for the New Jersey State High School Equivalency Examination. Concentrated instruction is provided in mathematics, grammar, reading and language arts. Mon. & Wed. 6:00-9:00 p.m. NO COST English as a Second Language (ESL) Conversational English for beginners and intermediate students. Emphasis is placed on improving students' oral and written communication skills, reading proficiency and knowledge of grammar. The adult basic skills student will also be required to take a post-test and complete an exit conference with counselor prior to the conclusion of the program. (Unless otherwise noted) These full-time evening programs are designed to provide students with entry-level skills in a one-year period. The courses meet 3 evenings, 12 hours per week, 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Requirements for registration are that students be at least 18 years of age, be out of school and an Essex County resident. Fall Term September 29, 2008 to January 30, 2009 Winter Term February 2, 2009 to June 5, 2009 AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY (Fall & Winter Registration) Emphasis is placed on providing the student with job entry-level skills. AUTO & FENDER REPAIR (Fall & Winter Registration) This course will include instruction on minor and major collision repairs, including frame straightening theory, unit body and chassis considerations, welding, body work preparation, painting and auto restoration. BUSINESS TECHNOLOGIES (Introduction) (Fall & Winter Registration) * Material Fee $ This is an introductory computer application course. No experience with computers is assumed and Microsoft Office, Access, Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Outlook and their integration are stressed. Use of the Internet is also explored. Tues. The course assumes that the student is familiar with the fundamentals of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Access and Power Point. DENTAL ASSISTING (Fall registration Only) This course is designed to prepare students for employment within a dental office. HEATING, VENTILATION & AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC) (Fall Registration Only) This course emphasizes the principles of air conditioning, refrigeration and electricity. Proper tool usage, maintenance and troubleshooting needed for the trade are demonstrated. Commercial AC and Refrigeration as well as gas heating systems are discussed. E.P.A. Areas covered include: hand-tools, fittings, domestic water supply, drainage systems, fixtures and connections, pipes and fittings, cold/hot water supply, heating systems, vents, waste disposal and code book technology. WELDING TECHNOLOGY This course covers techniques of welding: acetylene, electric arc, mig and tig welding, Blueprint reading is also integrated into the course to enable students to fabricate projects according to print specifications. They will be prepared for careers such as Computer Technician (troubleshooting and repairing computers); Help Desk Support (helping people to solve their problems with the software and operating systems, such as creating an Icon on their desktop, installing software, helping them to create folders and files, etc.). In addition, the student will be prepared for installation of multiple computers, in excess of 200. An A+ Certified instructor will teach this course. Upon the completion of the course, the students should successfully pass the A+ exam (Comptia Testing Ctr.). Students will be responsible for all test registration fees, books and kits. Mon., Tues., Wed., 5:00 9:00 p.m. (Technical Careers Center) CISCO CERTIFIED NETWORK ASSOCIATE (CCNA) (Fall registration only) * This course prepares individuals for careers in network design and implementation. Hands-on class using state of the art hardware and software (routers, computers, switches, hubs etc.) Course will be taught by a Cisco certified instructor. CCNA certification upon successful completion of the course is available. A home computer with Internet access is highly recommended. Tues., Wed., Thurs. 5:00-9:00 p.m. (Technical Careers Center) (See Pg. 12 for fees) CABLE, TV INSTALLATION & NETWORK CABLE TRAINING PROGRAM (Vocational/Technical) (Fall & Winter registration) Comcast Cable & the Essex County Vocational Technical Schools have developed a collaborative training partnership which will provide a pathway to support and prepare those students looking to start a Career in the cable TV installation field. Training will focus on CATV customer-facing video installation and repair techniques being used by Comcast Cable. Mon., Wed., Fri. 5:00-9:00 p.m. (Technical Careers Ctr.) (Test included: 45 hours, 15 sessions). Prerequisite: A minimum of three months boiler room experience with more than 100 horse power, employed full-time while under the supervision of a Licensed High Pressure Operator. Tues. and Wed. 6:00-9:00 p.m. (Technical Careers Center) $200.00, includes book (15 Sessions) Fireman's Black Seal (High Pressure): This course is designed for individuals interested in upgrading their valid New Jersey State Black Seal License. (Text included: 45 hours, 15 Sessions). Prerequisite: A minimum of three months boiler room experience with greater than 100 horse-power, employer full-time while under the supervision of a Licensed High Pressure Operators. Prerequisite: Boiler Room experience, employed full-time under the supervision of a Licensed Engineer. Book included where applicable. This includes Churches, Restaurants, Travel Agencies, Doctors Offices, Law Firms, etc. The demand for Telephone Technicians who can install the wire and equipment, program the key switch, maintain the key switch and train the customer on its features is continually growing. Industry has identified that 70% of all Telephone Technicians will be eligible for pension in the next 2 years. This will create jobs and your students will be able to take advantage of these opportunities. Opportunities will also be with the local electrical contractors who are building the Smart Homes which include security, video and Key Telephone Systems. Upon completion of the course, a C-Tech Voice Communication Professional certification will be offered. The course will consist of 15 modules. Training emphasis will be placed upon preparing students for entry into the CATV field as a level 2 communication technician. 12 1143_prog_EssexCtyBooklet_08_Guts_v3 7/8/08 9:24 AM Page 11 EPA CERTITICATION FOR AIR CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION TECHNICIANS Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires that all persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants, be certified in proper refrigerant handling techniques as of November 14, Failure to comply can cost the technician/company as much as $25,000 per day, per violation and there is a bounty of up to $10,000 for providing information and/or services concerning violations to the EPA. Technicians who violate Clean Air Act Provisions may be fined, lose their certification and be required to appear in Federal Court. There are four (4) categories of technician certification: TYPE I: Persons who maintain, service or repair small appliances must be certified as Type I Technicians. TYPE II: Persons who maintain service, repair or dispose of high or very high pressure appliances, except small appliances and motor vehicle air condition systems, must be certified as Type II Technicians TYPE III: Persons who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of low-pressure equipment, as well as small appliance, must be certified as Universal Technicians. Essex County Vocational/Technical School's Air Conditioning, heating and Refrigeration course has been designed to not only prepare students for entry level positions in the HVAC trade but to simultaneously prepare the students to complete and pass the EPA Certification Exam. It is not only changing the type and amount of information available, but also the way ideas are delivered. The Cisco Networking Academy Program is a timely response to these challenges. It is a highly successful alliance between Cisco Systems, education, business, government, and community organizations around the world. The program has seen phenomenal growth since its launch in the fall of 1997 and now spans the entire United States and more than 40 countries. The program centers on teaching students to design, build, and maintain computer networks. But the significance goes well beyond the central lesson plan. Using Web technologies, the Cisco Networking Academy Program prepares students for the 21st century workplace and simultaneously serves as a valuable mode for successful e-learning. The Cisco Certificate Network Associate Program prepares students for careers in network design and implementation. Hands-on classes using state-of-the-art hardware and software (routers, switches, hubs etc.) are used by Cisco Certified Instructors (Admission is limited and highly competitive for qualified candidates). It is designed to prepare students for entry level positions in the dental professions as an educationally qualified Dental Assistant. Dental practice procedures are emphasized (dental sciences, chairside assisting, office management, and dental lab procedures). The program has both clinical/lab and didactic components. Successful completion of the Dental Assistant Program will also qualify participants to take Part I ~ (ICE) of the Dental Assisting National Board~Certified Dental Assistant (DANB~CDA) exam. This one-year program begins each September and meets Monday through Friday from 8:20 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. Applications will be accepted from December through March on the first Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. ONLY.
