17 Food Waste Solution Summit Mayra Garcia San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (SDCRAA) SDCRAA was created on January 1, 2003, as an independent agency to manage the day- to- day operabons of San Diego InternaBonal Airport (SDIA) and address the region s long- term air transportabon needs. 19 million travelers annually. Providing 182,500 flights/year. October 6, 2014
18 Food Scrap Expansion Program and Developing New Food Donation Program SDIA S Food Scrap Expansion Program Consist of three new foodservice providers : High Flying Foods, SSP America and Mission Yogurt. 41 onsite restaurants and three main prep kitchens parbcipated in the airport- wide composbng program in 2014, which resulted in the collecbon of 226 tons of food waste. The three phase expansion was divided: Phase I: Completed in December 2013, included HMS Host s 13 sites and main prep kitchen. Phase II: Completed in February 2014, included High Flying Foods eight restaurants, one main kitchen, and three storage areas. Phase III: Completed in December 2014, included SSP America s and Mission Yogurt s 19 sited and two main kitchens. Staff trained a total of 645 food and beverage employees and Flagship (custodial staff) recycling efforts resulted in $46,566 savings in disposal costs. Piloting Food Scrap Collection Program Currently pilobng the Authority breakrooms are labeled Mastering the Art of Recycling, have specific signage and bins for food scraps, recyclables and trash. The USO is in compliance with the City Recycling Ordinance and started pilobng the food scrap collecbon program from their prep kitchen area. New Food Donation Program The Airport s new food donabon program is providing the equivalent of about 5,000 meals/year, and it is just its first stage. Currently HMS Host and Paradies have programs in place, donabng over 3 tons/year of food, with an approximate fair market value of over $100,000, generabng roughly 5,000 meals for food insecure San Diegans. In collaborabon with Feeding America San Diego the Airport Authority recently donated nearly 300 meals to a local agency, from the annual Employee AppreciaBon BBQ held on September 25,
