Ranking of Top European Leasing Companies 2013

Leaseurope Ranking of Top European Leasing Companies 2013 Leaseurope is pleased to present the thirteenth annual Ranking of Top European Leasing Companies. The firms surveyed are members of the 44 member associations represented by Leaseurope in 34 countries, which in turn represent approximately leasing companies. Together, the latter account for approximately 92% of the entire European leasing market in Objective and Scope of the Ranking The purpose of the Ranking is to provide a yearly update on new leasing volumes and portfolios of the largest leasing firms in Europe. It covers the following activities: Leasing in its wider sense: this includes finance and operating leasing and other similar asset finance contracts (e.g. hire purchase), made to all types of customers, but does not take into account other types of lending, short term rental (e.g. daily car rental), stock finance or factoring activities. Companies are asked to specify the types of leasing products covered by the data they provide in the survey. European activities: the purpose of the Ranking is to survey European leasing. However, as some firms may have important extra-european activities, companies are given the possibility to mention this business separately. The Ranking comprises a total of 38 individual tables as follows: General overview tables comprising, for both parent/stand alone and subsidiary leasing firms: - Total new business within Europe - Number of new contracts - Outstandings - Information on the use of distribution channels, according to the following split: Banking networks Vendors Direct sales Intermediaries (brokers and agents) Others (for example, via the internet, etc.) - Total new business outside of Europe (when provided) Rankings for parent/stand alone and subsidiary companies, according to: - Value of total new contracts within Europe in Companies are also asked to provide their 2012 figures for purposes of comparison. Extra-European business is footnoted for those companies who provide the information. - Number of new contracts granted in 2013 (2012 figures shown when provided). - Value of total leased assets within Europe at the end of 2013 (2012 figures are shown when provided). 1/8

Rankings for parent/standalone and subsidiary companies, according to value and number of new contracts and value of leased assets in 2013 (2012 shown when provided) for the following asset categories: - Equipment - Real Estate - Automotive assets, separated into two sub-categories: Automobiles (cars and light commercial vehicles) Commercial vehicles (heavy commercial and industrial vehicles) The Ranking aims to be as complete as possible, however only those responses received can be included. Leaseurope attempts to present an accurate representation of European lessors; however this exercise is not exhaustive as not all European leasing companies participate in the exercise. While all European leasing firms are invited to take part, participation is on a voluntary basis. The questionnaire was made directly available to leasing companies via Leaseurope s website and hundreds of individual invitations were sent out to European leasing firms. Additionally, Leaseurope s member associations were urged to encourage their member firms to fill in the questionnaire. 2. Definitions and Terminology Used in the Ranking Europe is considered to be the entire European Continent and not just the EU27 member states. Firms from countries such as the Russian Federation and Turkey also fall under the scope. New Business is defined as the value of new contracts granted in 2013, excluding VAT. The terms new production, new business or new volumes are used interchangeably. Outstandings refers to the total value of leased assets at the end of the year reflecting depreciation, be it financial or straight line depreciation Securitised portions of the lease portfolio should be included in reported outstandings Respondents are asked to deal with acquisitions of other companies by splitting new production from outstandings of the acquired firm. However, when reporting figures that include acquired lease portfolios (as opposed to acquiring an entire firm), it is requested that the entire portfolio be included in outstandings. Companies are grouped together into two categories namely parent or stand alone companies and subsidiary companies. This is to provide all European leasing companies with the opportunity to take part in the Ranking while differentiating between leasing groups on the one hand and the subsidiaries belonging to these groups on the other. 2/8

The consolidation perimeter for reporting as a parent/stand alone company or a subsidiary is defined as follows: Bank, holding company, manufacturer, etc. Consolidation Perimeter for parent/stand alone companies Parent Leasing Company This company is classified as a parent company for the purpose of the Ranking. Indeed this company is the so-called parent of the leasing group, even though it may itself be a subsidiary company on a wider group level. Stand alone or independent leasing companies are also included in this category. This company reports consolidated figures for its leasing group for the purposes of the Ranking. Subsidiary A Subsidiary B Subsidiary C These companies are classified as subsidiary companies for the purpose of the Ranking and report figures only for their individual entity. Parent or stand alone companies reporting in the Ranking are asked to identify themselves as a: - Bank - Leasing company owned by a bank: this is the case when a company is controlled (i.e. ownership stake > 50%) by a bank or banking group - Leasing company with a banking license - Captive company: manufacturer-linked company with exclusive or prevailing activity in the market of the manufacturer supporting the sale of a parent s products - Independent leasing company: companies not included in the above categories should report as independent leasing firms Please note the term bank-related refers to the first three categories listed above. Subsidiary companies are classified according to the origin of their parent: - Subsidiary of a bank related leasing company - Subsidiary of a captive company - Subsidiary of an independent leasing company 3/8

3. Results of Leaseurope s Ranking of Top European Leasing Companies for 2013 a) Overview of the 2013 Ranking results This year 79 firms located in 24 different countries (both EU and non-eu member states) responded to the Ranking. 7 b) Distribution Channels Table 4: Distribution Channels Distribution channel New business reported through the various channels (bil ) Percentage of total new business reported by firms in 2013 Ranking % of firms in the Ranking using distribution channel 2013 Top European Leasing Companies Banking Direct Vendors Intermediaries networks sales Other % 34% 32% 5% 1% 63% 58% 84% 47% 19% The most popular distribution channel used by the leasing firms reporting in the 2013 Ranking remained the direct sales channel, with 84% of firms choosing to conclude some part of their business directly with their clients. This channel however, no longer accounts for the largest percentage of new business, declining from 33% in 2012 to 32% in 2013 (see table 4). Used by comparatively fewer firms (63%) than direct sales, the amount of new business ( 36.1 billion) concluded through the banking network channel has decreased since As a percentage of total new volumes reported in the survey, the importance of this channel remains unchanged compared to 2012 (28% of new volumes). The vendor channel increased its share of total new business volumes reported in the survey from 33% in 2012 to 34% in This channel now accounts for the largest amount of new business, with lessors concluding 44.7 billion worth of contracts using their vendor programs. Although the intermediary channel is used by almost half the survey respondents, it remains very small in share of total new business at around 5% in A similar number of firms used the other channel compared to 2012 (19%) with hardly any volumes being granted through this channel in /8

The use of intermediaries by the 20 largest players decreased compared to the previous year, from 5% in 2012 to 4% in The top 20 players accounted for 72% of all volumes granted through intermediaries. 7/8

4. Data Plausibility and Consistency Data provided in the survey has been submitted to Leaseurope member associations for confirmation. As with the previous editions of the Ranking, additional validation steps have been carried out to ensure the consistency and objectivity of the Ranking. For instance, figures for those companies answering both last year s and this year s Ranking were compared to ensure that the evolution between the two was plausible. Furthermore, new entrants as well as exiting companies were identified and changes in position among the top companies noted. Average contract duration and average contract size were calculated to ensure consistency between the new production and the two indicators respectively: outstanding portfolio and number of contracts. Potential errors or surprising numbers were further investigated through personal contacts with the responding companies in order to avoid mistakes and misinterpretations. 5. Ranking Publication The full Ranking (i.e. the 36 Ranking tables & 2 global tables including distribution channel information) is sent to all responding companies and to the Leaseurope member associations. The Ranking table Value of Total New Contracts within Europe in Parent Companies - Consolidated Figures is posted on our public site and released to the press. The remaining Ranking tables will not be made publicly available. Acknowledgements Leaseurope would like to thank all those involved in the production of the Leaseurope Ranking of Top European Leasing Companies for 2013, both the answering leasing companies and its member associations, for taking time to provide us with their data and for their help in going through and validating the collected figures.
