Stolpman Krissman Elber & Silver Randy Wilson Norm Wilson & Sons March 2015 Dear Winery: With literally dozens of wine competitions annually that you are invited to enter, choosing which ones to participate in often comes down to two critical factors: Will my wine be fairly evaluated? What benefits will there be for me when I win a major medal? The non-profit Long Beach Grand Cru International Wine Competition, celebrating its 21st year, attracts a variety of wines from around the world. The competition judging process uses only respected wine industry experts and leaders including wholesalers, wine merchants, restaurateurs and wine columnists, skilled in judging under a double-blind judging process that ensures all styles of wines are evaluated objectively and impartially. Our judging panels recognize the best wines in all categories with Bronze, Silver, Gold, Sweepstakes and Best of Class medals. The Grand Cru is a valuable marketing opportunity for all wineries who participate. Competition results are disseminated quickly, reported extensively in the media, and listed on our website for the next year. Additionally, medal-winning and competition wines are showcased at the annual Grand Cru Public Tasting Celebration (to be held this year on August 8, 2015), one of Southern California s most popular food and wine events attended by more than 1,000 oenophiles and wine collectors. In addition to the marketing benefits it affords, there is another very important reason to participate in the Grand Cru International Wine Competition: 100% of the net proceeds go to support a very worthy cause, the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA). As the frontline law firm for poor and low-income people in Los Angeles County for 86 years, LAFLA is committed to supporting disadvantaged and underserved individuals, families and communities through programs and services that ensure safe, affordable housing; maintain economic stability; promote safety, security, and health; fight discrimination; and defend human and civil rights. In 2013, LAFLA provided legal assistance and case management services to homeless and at-risk veterans, domestic violence and torture victims, vulnerable children, the disabled and elderly, and working poor families in over 12,000 client matters affecting 31,080 people (including more than 13,000 children in client households). LAFLA also provided important legal information and education to 45,717 self-represented litigants, helping them confront and overcome barriers to equal justice. Please join us and be part of the two-day Grand Cru International Wine Competition as well as our Grand Cru Public Tasting. It s a win-win! Sincerely, Silvia Argueta, Esq. The Long Beach Grand Cru competition is a very special one which I have enjoyed judging for many years. Not only does it attract a lot of wines and great expert judges, but it is very well run and, best of all, benefits the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. I am honored and proud to be part of it. The statement reads as follows and should be 2mm to 3 mm in size: GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) ACCORDING TO THE SURGEON GENERAL, WOMEN SHOULD NOT DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES DURING PREGNANCY BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF BIRTH DEFECTS. (2) CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IMPAIRS OUR ABILITY TO DRIVE A CAR OR OPERATE MACHINERY, AND MAY CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS. Trade Samples Not for Resale Contains Sulfites Judging Process The judging process is structured as a double-blind and follows the concepts found in Wines: Their Sensory Evaluation by Amerine and Roessler. Each entry is assigned its own number which identifies the wine from start to finish no matter how many times it may be judged. In the event a winery lists an incorrect classification for their entry the Chairman of the Competition will move it to the correct classification. The number of panels is determined by the number of wines entered. A panel consists of 4 judges who evaluate the wines assigned to them by vintage, type, style, class, and winemaking techniques. Each panel member judges approximately wines per day. The flights are structured so that each panel has a variety of white and red wines to avoid palate fatigue. Wines are not judged in price categories as judges may be swayed which could lead to faulty results. Judges are asked to pay attention to all styles of wine and to award medals based not only on power but to consider subtlety, delicacy, varietal character, terroir and breeding. The judges discuss their findings and a vote is taken to determine if the wine is worthy of a medal. The judges decision is final and results are never altered when this decision is made. It is during this process that a determination is made to award Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Chairman s Best of Class medal and a Sweepstakes nomination. There are five awards given in the Sweepstakes category: BEST sparkling, white, rosé, red, and dessert wine. Wines nominated for the Sweepstakes award are served to all the judges. Note: Fundraising is a critical factor of the Long Beach Grand Cru. Funds raised benefit the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, which provides legal help for low income and poor people in civil matters only. All wines become the property of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. We recommend you send a winery representative to pour or we can assign a volunteer pourer. All remaining wine after the Public Tasting will be used for charitable fundraising and marketing benefits throughout the year. From beverage media specialist, restaurateurs, hoteliers, food and beverage directors and wine producers, the selection of the judges incorporates their ability to evaluate consistently every wine presented. The Long Beach Grand Cru s boutique pedigree offers wineries immeasurable importance that may otherwise be lost in other competitions of titanic enormity. Chef William S. Bloxsom-Carter, Executive Chef/Food & Beverage Director 4
