3 IMPACTION: SJSU receives applications from more eligible students than there is space for, thus meeting the minimum requirements may not be enough to gain you admission to SJSU. The eligibility index is the minimum standard for consideration. Frosh You meet or exceed the minimum eligibility index The eligibility index is a weighted combination of high school grade point average during the final three years of high school and a score on either the SAT or ACT. To make a preliminary admission decision, all grades earned in a-g courses taken in 10th through 11th grades are used to calculate the high school grade point average (GPA). Graduates of California high schools or residents of California, as defined for tuition purposes, must have a minimum eligibility index of 2900 using the SAT or 694 using the ACT. Nonresidents who are not graduates of a California high school must have a minimum index of 3502 using the SAT or 842 using the ACT. Note: For consideration for some impacted majors, SJSU requires a minimum eligibility index of 3200 using the SAT or 760 using the ACT. See degree pages 6-7 for list. The CSU eligibility index is calculated by using either the SAT or ACT as follows: SAT (scores in mathematics and critical reading) + (800 x GPA) or (10 x ACT composite score without the writing score) + (200 x GPA) Residents of California Minimum Eligibility GPA SAT ACT Must submit test scores. Eligible for consideration with GPA above 3.00 and necessary course requirements. Residents of California Minimum Eligibility Impacted Majors GPA 2.59 and below SAT Must have 3200 eligibility index to be considered ACT for impacted major Must submit test scores to be eligible for consideration Compute Your GPA for the CSU STEP 1 Fill in the number of semester courses you have taken next to the grade you have earned. All grades earned in a-g courses taken in 10th through 11th grades are used to calculate the grade point average (GPA). Summer school courses count, including the summer between 9th and 10th grades, and excluding the summer after 12th grade. Repeated courses must be exact same course use only the highest grade. Honors courses taken in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades (maximum of 8 semesters, of which there is a maximum of two in the 10th grade) receive one additional grade point for each A, B or C grade. STEP 2 Multiply the number of courses by the grade points per grade to get the total grade points. Grade Received TOTAL STEP 3 COLUMN 1 Number of Semester Classes Grade Points per Grade A x 4 B x 3 C x 2 D x 1 F x 0 Total from Column 2 Total from Column 1 Your GPA Honors TOTAL DIVIDED BY EQUALS COLUMN 2 Total Grade Points Add 1 additional grade point for each A, B or C grade (8 points maximum) Choice of major and application review SJSU is an impacted campus, therefore eligibility for admission is based on: 1. Minimum CSU eligibility standards 2. Location of the applicant s high school 3. Applicant s choice of major Applicants should carefully select their intended majors. Change of major during the application process is prohibited. Local and non-local students SJSU is committed to giving Santa Clara county residents priority in the admission process. Local applicants are students who will graduate from a Santa Clara county high school. Local applicants are guaranteed admission provided they apply by 11:59 PST on November 30, 2009, comply with all posted deadlines and meet CSU eligibility requirements. CSU-eligibile local applicants who are not accommodated in impacted majors will be offered admission as an Undeclared major. Non-local applicants are students who will graduate from a high school located outside of Santa Clara county. Admission is offered to non-local applicants based on the overall space available. Non-residents of California and international applicants must meet higher minimum standard, regardless of major. See info.sjsu.edu for details. Supplemental Criteria Impacted Majors Impacted majors require the supplemental criterion of a higher eligibility index. See the degree listing for details. All frosh applicants compete for admission to these majors and are assessed and ranked according to GPA and test score eligibility index. Have a back-up plan! Applicants to SJSU s impacted majors should have a backup plan at an alternative campus that offers the desired major. Download the affidavit at You will need to show proof of attendance and graduation. The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by The Board of Trustees. FOR DETAILS, SEE Frosh Placement Tests in English and Math After admission, all frosh will be informed via the Next Steps intent to enroll process if the ELM/EPT requirement has been satisfied. If required, you must take placement tests before attending orientation. By taking these tests early, you will be able to attend an earlier orientation and have access to better course selection. If you participated in the Early Assessment Program (EAP) and received a conditional exemption you may need to take some supplemental coursework while you are enrolled in high school. For details, see Writing Skills Test for Transfers The Writing Skills Test (WST) is required of all upper division students and is prerequisite for enrolling in all SJSU Studies General Education courses. Students must earn a C or better grade in English 001B prior to registering for the WST and enrolling in 100W. A C- grade is not acceptable. Generally two WST dates are offered in the spring, two in the summer, and two in the fall. Go to for exact dates. It is strongly recommended that students take the WST prior to registering for their first semester. Failing to pass the exam in a timely fashion may delay graduation. For details, see Financial Aid Applicants The cost of college should not discourage students from applying to SJSU. Financial Aid is assistance offered to you and your family to help meet the gap between what you can contribute to your education and what it costs to attend college. Financial aid can be in the form of federal grants, state grants, work-study, scholarships and loans. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for financial aid at SJSU. The FAFSA will be available at by January You should apply by the Tuesday, March 2, 2010 priority filing deadline for the upcoming Fall 2010 semester. Applications are still accepted after the March 2 date; however, many aid programs award funds based on this deadline. SJSU uses a need-blind admission policy and does not base admission to the university on the student s ability to pay. The FAFSA form asks for SJSU s six-digit code, which is Students who apply for financial aid through the FAFSA will view a personalized Student Aid Report online. Students print this report for their records. The campus financial aid office will then contact you to complete your file and will determine your financial aid eligibility. It takes about two weeks to respond to your initial application and three to four months to complete the entire process. For details, see Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to assist students who are historically disadvantaged because of their economic and educational backgrounds. EOP serves California residents who meet stated admissions requirements, as well as those who may not qualify for regular admission but who demonstrate potential to succeed at the university level. EOP applicants must meet low-income guidelines as designated in the EOP section of CSUMentor and must show need of financial and academic assistance. The EOP process has three parts: 1. Apply for admission to SJSU via If you wish to be considered as an EOP applicant, check the EOP box on the CSUMentor application. 2. Complete the online EOP application located on the CSUMentor website. 3. You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to qualify for consideration to EOP. If you are admitted to SJSU and you also qualify for EOP, you will receive additional support services from the university.
